Mercatino dei Bambini a Rimini/Children's Little Market at Rimini

I stop the publication of my journey diary for this week, 'cause I want to signal the last appointment on tomorrow evening at piazza Cavour in Rimini for the "Children's Little Market"

Irish P. and me are enough children to partecipate! And already we have been there last month!
You can spend a beautiful and colorful evening in the square among banquets arranged by children and their parents, and be curious about used toys, books for children and not, clothes shoes, accessories and many other curiosities, all good and symbolic prices!

For parents it is a great opportunity to get rid of things that children don't want or can no longer use. These things often ends instead in bins: to give a second life to this things seems the right behaviour, due to the velocity and the insistence with which today's children consume and claim! Even the children themselves, selling their things, better understand their value and they learn that it's better not to throw them when someone else might enjoy the same things!

Last time we enjoyed a lot and stayed until last minutes. We purchased numerous publications on Rimini (only 1 euro each) including a wonderful illustrated book/notebook entitled "Guide to teaching farms in the province of Rimini", a colorful strap bag in jute (3 euros) and a wonderful eco-gadget!

It is a curious purse made by a girl with tetrapak! She had a basket full! The purse is perfect and shows the colored graphics of fruit juice and milk packaging! in addition it is decorated too!
I paid it 5 euros but all money are earned for the good manufacturing and the ecological spirit that this little girl has demonstrated.
If I succeed in coming back tomorrow I'll buy someone else and put as price on the blog soon! ;-)

Allora torniamo tutti bambini domani sera?!?
Then why don't return all to childhood tomorrow evening?

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary – 08 Aug 08

A presto cara terra mia!

After an evening spent up late with friends, this morning at 7.30 a.m., I open my eyes, weather is hot and I am already waked up. The sun is up yet and it begins to cook the country.
This is a new year of hot, hot summer, boiling as not seen before for a long time. Within a few hours the temperature rises and roads, buildings and even gardens are hot. I had to aspect it: the heat here, in Puglia, is often dry, almost to North African levels.
The day passes slow, half closed in the house. I try employment not to die of boredom seeing the kaleidoscope TV transmitting the start of the Olympics Games in China. Hot takes my breath away: inevitable I try to find to cool a little with the fan or air conditioner switched to low and set on
30 °C. I end to lay down on the bed and sleep until the heat disappears and reappears at 5.30 p.m. Beijing is still there on TV to give off colours, technologies and human skills, unmindful of a climate, even there, off limits of endurance.
Only after 8 p.m., down the sun, you can leave the house. I’m out after half an hour and even through one of the city's main roads I pass in front of a shop window that I see in distract way. I have to go back: I see a room illuminated but almost empty except at the centre a large solar panel stands in a stunning show!
Goodness! I think: why are we so stupid? If all everybody here had solar panels, periods like the torrid August would make a great deal in energy and heat free and clean!
A country like ours, Italy, which invests in solar energy is really a stupid country!
Fortunately someone is noticing it but how many years we have to wait until everyone could have the solar energy available? I hope that we’ll not arrive at the time when the temperature of the Earth will eliminates the possibility of survival!
Continuing in my lazy stroll I see posted some posters on a prize for users who have virtuously reached a substantial percentage of recycling, collecting points on a card and giving waste the ‘ecological island’. Winners are prized with bonus to spend at supermarket! Too bad it is not having way to deepen, to better investigate…

That is about I finish my stay in Canosa, and ultimately I must admit that some small thing is changing. Even from the sixth floor of my flat I see that some timid solar panels come out and say hello to me from the roofs of houses! I expect to find the next time the town increasingly environmentally committed! I leave in hope… and due that hope is green, I hope to find my country more… green!
See you soon my beloved land!

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary – 07 Aug 08

It’s Thursday, market day! It is the watchword of ladies of Canosa! People waive the sea to go for a walk in the square, also with the sunshine!
Well to me rarely happens to head to the market of Canosa, because I don’t go back home so more often, and secondly because usually it happens somehow on holidays or during weekends. So I can’t renounce to this ‘ritual’ and I have also to waive the sea, aiming to go shopping in a smart way if I’ll ever found something that do in my case.
Indeed, turning around banquets I am very disappointed, realizing that clothing are all equal, as made with a clichés, all imported and made of poor and unnatural materials. I therefore limite to buy few underwear cloths, then discovering that they aren’t made all of cotton, a linen skirt, a pair of pyjamas and then olives, those good in brine, and fragrant oregano. Nothing more, because I escape from plastic smells everywhere.
But in the way home I plan to make a leap to a small oasis of the town: the fair trade shop, in Oberdan street. I knew the existence of it but I couldn’t still managed to go there. Within the door open, the wrong one, I go in and find the manager of the shop concentrated in its affairs. After greeting I apologize for having crossed the wrong entrance, and then I ask to take a look around. I discover to my great surprise that the shop is a true bio shop!
There are countless kinds of organic and fair food and natural products, up to ecological detergents and even on tap! It is a real goodness from heaven for a country so little careful to the environment! I discover that prices are even lower than that usually I found in Rimini, on identical products,
same quantity, same brands!
Too bad not come here with a private vehicle, I would have shopped everything! But then I provide with 4 packs of sacks for the collection staff. I am surprised to see them there and ask the manager what they do in a town where this waste fraction was never collected. He replies that was a mistaken order. It seemed strange! My curiosity takes me to ask why recycling in Canosa isn’t so easy. I come to know that recently there has been a small boost thanks to some new economic entry for activity in waste management. I wonder if one day these MaterBi® bags will be sold. For now I think I’m the only buyer. I greet the manager, two people are entering in the store, and I hope that in
future there will be greater customer base, although they fear to close the exercise shortly.
I hope not, it would be a great loss for the inhabitants of Canosa. I go away with hope and walking the road to home I see a poster that stands on the window of a stationery shop. This is the recycling of used printers cartridges, Hooray!
Well, today Canosa has gained two points more, even three, because while I write, I hear rumours like thunders: a truck of the local waste company is passing and loading cartons and wooden boxes left outside the shops, I hope they’ll be brought to recycling. Hooray, a!

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary – 06 Aug 08

Today I shouldn’t talk about garbage, but about a great novelty concerning this sunny inland town, Canosa, (Puglia) with a rich history and historic testimonies. One of the most beautiful historical proofs, for so long neglected, is the area St. Leucio, archaeological site that often has been the symbol of the city. It is located not far from the town, on a South hill, in an area still cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, now preserved by archaeological restrictions.
Almost every year, and since I was a child, I went with my parents and grandparents there, to make a visit to a small piece of property, which is almost tangential to the excavations. Over time I saw the weeds grow on ancient buildings, mosaics losing colours, the beautiful face of Juno crumble under the influence of bad weather. Access was almost impossible, sometimes only entering secretly by a hole in the bad fence, while the official entrance was almost permanently closed to
visitors.
Finally after so many years of agony the site has found dignity with the reopening of new excavation campaigns, the existing was put in order and an annexed ‘antiquarium’ was opened, built many years ago and never used until now to its function. Today this is open, as well as access to visitors, we hope not only for the summer months. Inside there are curious and wonderful artefacts found in excavations and explanatory panels with depictions on assumptions of reconstruction.
S. Leucio presents two architectural installations: a temple of pagan origin of second century BC and a Christian overlapped construction, all original planting, and many other testimonies of previous and more recent buildings until reaching the high Middle Ages.
I am not here to bring a detailed description of the site but I can say that everything arouse wonder like the capitals of the pagan temple, including those depicting the faces of gods – I mentioned that with Juno, which remains the most beautiful for me – and Byzantine mosaics that have nothing to envy to those best-known in North Italy, for geometries, fantasy and varieties – the most famous is the ‘peacock’–. This evening there will be a guided tour with connected conference, open to citizens who can no longer say in front of these beauties: “Look! There are only four stones!”, wich is a typical phrase of those citizens!
Other meetings will be set all throughout August.

After a conference strangely packed with people and a fascinating night visit at the site, I must say that was a beautiful experience. I immortalized few very sharp images (see slideshow beside) and among these I couldn’t miss what is more surprising to me: recycling bins in an archaeological site… I hope that the bins too wouldn’t become… objects museum soon!

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary – 05 Aug 08

I feel that this will be a lively day, at the sea again, again hot, meeting old friendships. It’s laughing and joking together, chatting about how we lived the spent seasons. A gentle breeze alleviates this hot atmosphere.
Under the umbrella I try, reading, to convince me that everything goes better. Maybe! Today on the bus that leads us to sea and then home, a young lady is chatting with another and I eavesdrop to hear one say to another: ‘Do you know that now it is possible to recycle the tetrapak’?
I cannot believe my ears; the lady perfectly knows what must be done: wash in it, and press it, then put in paper to recycle it. And the other says: ‘Really? And cans’?
Well, I stay perplexed… I knew that cans have to be put in the same plastic bin! This should be the system of local waste collection.
Then I discover that the door to door collecting system still works. Already, why that purple envelope full of PET bottles rested on the road? I had a moment of disappointment, looking at it: on the envelope there was in great characters the word ‘Wednesday’, but today is still Tuesday, so someone has played in advance!
It is a little ‘strange ‘door to door’ system, it’s more correct t call it a ‘street to street’ system: some days of the week plastics, in other days paper, in other days glass, you can leave bags in some parts of the town, usually a crossroad and then in the afternoon, the removal takes place. Certainly not a beautiful sight, but I feel raised in knowing that this waste collection system still exist… really ‘it is not true that everything is worse’!

And searching in this ‘museum’ which my house is – the house where I grew up, where my Mom, for a particular attachment to things, rather than for ecological spirit, has the mania to keep everything – I found a leaflet explaining how recycling works in the town, with specific reference to the novelty of tetrapak. Who knows if it was delivered in all homes, hoping that it is not finished in the same garbage without paying attention on it. Mmm… feel stench of… carelessness!

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary – 04 Aug 08

I left the coast of Romagna in order for reaching the water of a sea hotter and salty. And I don’t know if it is cleaner, sure it is transparent, yes, but full of small algae and transparent jellyfish with those four short pink filaments that are well suited to them, but detested by humans.
It is strange to think that these beautiful creatures can give us so much discomfort, however, well thinking about it, we are nuisance to them and with our bulky and hot bodies we go to invade a habitat that we transform, even if we aren’t the masters of it!
So I go in the water with circumspection and try not to strike them, swimming a little enough to cool his terrible hot weather in the first August.
Already, the heat is the dominant element of this month, when the white stones of roads and buildings of my town reflect the sun that hits above us. Shadow is the only salvation, to search it is hard, in a place where green is not obviously loved.
So the only hope to enjoy cool is to do the ‘siesta’ until almost seven p.m., in the evening, when the city returns to animate a little … indeed too much! Usual traffic, usual northern and southern Italian mixed dialects, usual sounds of stereo at maximum volume, and music that comes from pubs and squares.
We are a strange people, passionate, sentimental. We live with the intensity cheerful and difficult moments, but we like to do much noise, celebrate, eat! This last thing is that one we devote much time, sometimes so much that we forget important things like the civil life.
And so that walking the streets there are waste of any kind on the ground, on sidewalks, in small, too little green areas. And then I approached recycling bins, just to see if it is changed something: but the bins, huge, too big, are empty and out, all around, mountains of plastic bags full of plastic bottles, not even pressed… Other bags, collected by uninformed or uninterested consumers, contain a mix of every kind of waste. And there are still some organic waste bins, but what can I say? Maybe now someone has understood what they are for? Unfortunately none. And I take my bottles and in a gesture in absolute solitude, squeeze and throw them in the yellow empty bin.

Appunti di viaggio /My journey diary - 03 Aug 2008

Eccomi qui!!!
Sono tornata! Ben trovati tutti voi! Cos'è successo nel frattempo? Abbiamo tante cose da dirci. Io in primis.
Here I am!!! I'hope you're well! What's happened in the meantime? I have to tell you lots of things! I edited a diary of my journey which of course I'll post starting from today. Yes, I leaved with a block notes to write about everything.
Let's start from Sunday 3rd August, the first day of two weeks that made me feel new!

I'm back, after a long time, in my native region, Puglia, searching for family affection, friends, who normally are living here and there in Italy, during the year.
Summer is not only time for relaxing and taking distance from the daily noise, but also the right time for backing to origins, living in lightheartedness, like in the childhood, a time in which you can take contact with people, with yourself, your hobbies and passions... in a word it is a sort of rebirth.
So I'm in the bus that takes me home, with a mind full of thoughts about how the next 15 days are going to be, how I am spending time, who I'm meeting.
And out of the window of the bus, imagines of Italy run, imagines that I know very well, since I was a child. Landscape is partly the same, partly it is changed a lot. Hills that run along the motorway are even the same, raising over a calm and apparently safe sea. It's a series of pines, oleanders, brooms, countries that follow one from another. And countries are colored with new plantations, different from the usual ones.
There are sunflowers, we usually see in Tuscany. Now unlimited lands of mature sunflowers come across Italy and I think it's strange: we never were great consumers of sunflower seeds products. I realize that it's changed our relationship with Earth, that firstly was the resource for our feeding, now a resource for industry: we grow plants not only for food but also for feeding our material need and then going to pollute. What a big paradoxe!
So I 'cheer up' when I see a field of still wind pales in the province of Foggia, then with a 'charming' sight of a storm of flying gulls on a landfill where, even on Sunday, trucks are going and coming, and at last I see a kilometers long column of very dark smoke, wich rise above other little smoke columns, caused by fire on heap of brushwood in the fields.
Everything takes me in my land where scenery of silver olive-groves and green vineyards remain a happier identity, and I hope, an inviolate one.

Gelato fatto in casa / Homemade ice cream

Here we are back again talking about home made delicacies. Ice cream. Let’s tell you how we made it with the new ice cream maker.

A few ingredients and simple cares in order to obtain a truly good ice cream, even better than some purchased in the plastic vessels at the supermarket.
In order to make the easier ice cram (vanilla taste) are sufficient, following doses specified by the appliance, 1 l of milk, one and half hg of sugar, 200 ml of cream and a hint of vanillin.
Of course, to avoid further waste would be good to be careful procuring these ingredients, taking care that they have recyclable or compostable packaging.
As we did with yoghurt we took the main ingredient (milk) from the fresh milk self-distributor here that is our daily furnisher.
You must prepare the mix and pay in the tank, previously made cool for several hours in the freezer. Then you can start the engine of ice cream and in about 40 minutes you get the ice cream, which will be even more compact after having placed it again in the freezer for a while – as you can see in the picture, we used an old bowl of industrial ice cream purchased before buying the ice cream maker –.

You can customized flavour at will, following the recipes you can find in the box of the appliance, or following your inventiveness. The first time we made it, as good lovers of Ireland, we added some whiskey cream, and the result has been above every expectation.

Surely making ice cream at home is a more natural way of consuming food, being aware of what are the real ingredients of our food, in order to feel better also when we are seated at table, one of the last remained pleasures!!!

Danda aggiunge a questo:
In addition Danda says:

‘It’s sad to look around and see often on the ground or outside the filled bins, ice creams wrap, plastic cups and spoons! Moreover if you are used to buy large amounts of ice cream at the supermarket, you find yourself to collect numerous plastic trays. These are recyclable and reusable too, but when they are too many, there are a real waste – don’t forget that they consume manufacture energy and oil –!
I also recently read an article about ice creams, written by Enrico Zagnoli, an agronomist who is expert in food industry (on ‘Valore Alimentare’ #23), and I bitterly (LOL) discovered that the commercial ice cream is made from a mix that contains air in quantity almost equal to the weight of the other ingredients, apart from the fact that there are dyes, preservatives, stabilisers, vegetable fats and other less reassuring things. Have you ever read the ingredients of packaged ice cream? Well do it. And I say that even craft ice cream is not always genuine, since many ice cream artisans buy mixtures that are already pre-which, moreover travelled for miles on trucks with a monstrous environmental impact!
So we are absolutely proud of our ice cream, although occasionally we take a cone when we walk for a while!’

Vacanzeee!!!/Holidayyyy!!!

Ebbene sì siamo quasi agli sgoccioli, mancano pochi giorni e poi sarò in ferie!
Yes, we are almost at the last, missing a few days and then I’m leaving!

Some of you are already enjoying the stay, who at sea, who in the mountains, who in localities of art and history. Well, I would like to host some your stories, especially if you want to communicate something that you saw around, some episode of environmental carelessness, some sighting of animals or plants ... just send it to the e-mail you find in my profile.

I make the announcement that I’m spending approximately one week in my native town, in Puglia, to remain with my parents while I’ll take note here and there of the progress or setbacks in the environmental field.

The most beautiful part, however, of my holidays, I hope, but certainly the more interesting one, will be the second week, that I’ll spend with my mate in Trentino. This will be a deliberately low-impact holiday: depart by train for Trento and reach, provided by rail electricity and then local bus, in a country at the intersection of the Val di Non and the Val di Sole, Revò. There, this time, we chose to stay in a B&B feathered ‘Ecolabel’. The hostess has assured us special hospitality: rich and abundant breakfast with home-made products and garden or local fruits, bread and cakes fresh baked on every morning and small fruits collected during the day. On the programme there are many fine hikes, strictly by foot.

Furthermore, I’ll bring back some good book to read, given that among work, blog, reading feeds and work at home, I always dedicated a few time to one of my favorite pastimes: I’ll bring with me ‘It Is Not True That Everything’s Worse’ by Michele Dotti and Jacopo Fo, ‘Wildwatching’ by Isabella Lattes Coifmann, ‘A Guide to Happy-Organic Detergents’ by Maria Theresa De Nardis, and ‘Ecoshopping’ by Rita Imwinkelried and Nicoletta Pennati (all titles are translation of the author). The latter two are guides, but also they have an introductory part with various interesting things I need to know.

About books, holiday and other news we will tell you on our return, while at the time you'll have to content yourselves with a few of ‘programmed’ blogposts so as you’ll continue training in reading! :-D
What can I add? I cannot wait to starting to relax a bit, finally, but you’ll be sure that I will look forward to return posting here on this blog, and I’m sure that when we’ll come back there will be many fine things to tell you!
Then a big hug to everybody an ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY!
