The old readers of my blog, well know that Irish People and me love to celebrate this particular new year's night. And we don't think that it's only a way to imitate American people. We think that it's a way to returd to origins, to old traditions... who in his own country don't celebrate the Saints and the Departed? Well, it's the same thing we do!
And every year we celebrate ever in a different way... the last one we made a medieval dinner, this year, due to the fact that our friends are fare from here, we are celebrating in a greener way.

So, to whom is in Rimini or nearby, I pass the invite received from Andrea Zanzini, who, from his blog , announce a series of initiatives that the Environmental and Energetical Politics Council opens staring from tonight.

Tonight the "Dinamo" exibition starts: it has 'the bicycle' as theme and some artists will show 15 works realized with old bikes. The exibition will be opened until 9th November.
At the same time tonight we enjoy, even if weather will permit us, a walk of urban trekking, organized by the Association "Pedalando e Camminando", which will drive us through the city, discovering it by night, in a green way to move, becoming turists in a different way and exchanging friendship with other people!
For further informations see also
Andrea's post

If we will have the strenght after that we'll go to celebrate to 'Assenzio', when music selected by Bicio and Ale, will make the misterious night happier.

And due to tradition we'll turn on the candle in the funny pumpkin we have bought from our greengrocer, Andrea. So, to rthe green of initiatives we will add a touch of orange! And I'll bake my chocolate cookies. The pumpkin seeds will be given to our daily winged visitors. It will be a nice and happy night... trick or treat?

New entries: Composter & "The Book of Rubbish Ideas"

A few days has passed from the time I started neglecting my blog! Sorry! But last week a lot of exciting things were happened and I have to rescue time and energy to resume everything!

It needs to post for every argument discussed at the meeting of the previous weekend, which was very interesting and very encouraging too. I'll write about it soon, take just a little patience.

So, two important novelties arrived here at home:

The first, as I said in the last comments, is the composter!!! What a sin that it arrived packed with a lot of plastic that is only waste!
The one we previously bought, wasn't so easy to use, because it consisted in a big PP holed sack, not easy to hold up, when almost empty, and not easy for moving and taking the compost inside.
This we have now, is a real PP bin, that could contain up to 280 litres of compost. At the moment we decided where to put it, in a place in the garden which is sunny in the morning. We are documenting about how to correctly start composting.
Instructions are in German language, but on the internet we can find grand sites and downloadable documents which can help us. So, soonest I'll report here my steps of this new experience in the world of composting. Would someone start composting with us?

The second news is that finally "The Book of Rubbish Ideas", by Tracey Smith, arrives at home by airmail. I ordered it on the web and it is a real help for every people who want to reduce household waste. I must read it before saying my opinion, but, in the meanwhile you can find a preview on Tracey Smith's blog. She is another wonderful person who Almost Mrs. Average well knows!

At last I went to the cinema and I fell in love with a little robot called Wall-e, who is deeply similar to me! :-D But this I 'll tell you the next time...

Come ne “La Volpe e la Bambina” / As in “The Fox and The Child”

Sometimes I think the relationship I have with nature, particularly so deep and someone might say so "exaggerated" ...

I like contact with the green, walking on grass, feel the scent of earth, observe the flowers in their tiny and precise details, embrace the trees, imagine them in real beings. The view of most animals makes me move and I surprise all moving, sound or unexpected sight they make. I hold my breath in front of the spectacular views of valleys, waterfalls and pristine bays, but also just watching the nuances of the sky, the games of the sea, movement that the wind creates, the flash of fire, the starry sky in the total dark.

Tante persone, ancora troppe.
I know there are, like me, many people who experience the same feelings and people who feel even more and make for animals and nature, but there are also, unfortunately, less sensitive people, which remain indifferent in front of what the Earth shows us and people who even prove taste in killing animals and polluting the environment. Many people, still too many.

So if you have a child and fear he/she is losing the sense of belonging to this extraordinary planet, or if you yourself don’t prove more these emotions since a long time, try to see the film “The Fox and The Child”. You’ll remain fascinated and amazed by many things.

A girl lives with his family in a valley in the mountains and woods and enjoys a world in the midst of nature, scrutinizing everything and adventuring in the middle of the woods, in pursuit of animals. So she knows a fox and follows and follows her until it becomes her friend. She lives so in tune with this unpredictable and intelligent animal and almost she becomes at least fox herself with her ruffled reddish hair...
She exceeds some fears that seem insurmountable and her love for the fox makes overcome loneliness and sadness. As long as the human instinct to do everything own property dominates her and when the fox tries to make know her world she tries to do the same thing with the animal, but in a so sudden and reckless way, as it is often inherent in our being.
In the end, the child discovers the great gap between human nature and animal being and she understands that this must include respect know, up in basically, at the cost of losing what could seem a true friendship!

The film – which direction is by Luc Jacquet – is delicate and lively at the same time and the breathtaking scenery is around the corner: it was entirely shot in the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo (Abruzzo, Italy)!
How can we realize that nature is not only in our dreams, in photos of a book, in the frames of a film? It may be close to us, in the park of our city, in the woods behind the hill, in the home garden, in our region... just be a little naive, wondering, observing through the eyes of a child.
So respect it and protect it as if it was our true friend.
This the film recalled to me!

Una piccola buona notizia / A little good news

Just a little thing of which the inhabitants of Viserbella can be happy: since the first of October, as the Hera promised (the local society of waste collection) – I wrote them asking for information –, the facility for light packaging recycling collection is active: every kind of package can be recycled, including plastic, steel and aluminium cleaned from residues, so bottles, cans, bags, transparent packages, boxes and films.
So, be careful to recylcing symbols which are impressed on packaging! I'll wrote more specific posts about symbols, recovering those I previously wrote.

Finally a nightmare is stopped for us who were forced to bring big bags with light packaging to the bins behind the ralway.
Now we hope that the collection of organic waste fraction will extend here in winter. We still must to do some walks bringing with us the biodegradable bags, full to the point ok breaking.

Unless we start to do composting. Yes, it will be a great step!
So I enjoy the presence of this nice little yellow wheelie bin that gives to this grey winter too much quite sea street a touch of colour more.

Spesa Bio-Eco n°6/Sustainable shopping #6

After so long I return to speak of my every day habits with an eye always turned to the environment. I must admit that I have ever less time to report the expenses from bills, do the sums and describe all in the blog. But I know that we are in a period of economic crisis, and this work may help someone.

So we have left behind some accounts... eco-bio shopping in July, August and September has never cease, indeed, it has increased since at home, during the summer, we were in three instead of two. The host, the mother of my partner, has known the green products we consume, although it is difficult to convey fully this way of shopping, as happens with all people who have some strong habits over time.

We must return in July to see how much money we spent on organic food and environmentally friendly products: approximately € 85, dividing the consumption in three. Products previously described in post about sustainable shopping in July (http://dandaworld.blogspot.com/2008/07/spesa-bio-eco-n5sustainable-shopping-5.html) were only a small hand, while the rest were for everyday goods as pasta, canned tomatoes, handkerchiefs, napkins and ecological toilet paper. In short, there’s nothing new.

Also in August we have made great supply, this time after experimenting with a bio store new for us, but enough known in Rimini, with the prices on some products even cheaper.

Cominciamo con / We begin with:

• Sapone ecologico, ingredienti di origine vegetale, ml 500 – flacone in PP riciclabile, € 4,10
Ecological soap with vegetable ingredients, 500 ml – PP recyclable bottle, € 4.10

Liquid detergent for delicate wear, ecological, with lavender essential oil, 1 l – recyclable bottle in PE, € 4.70

• Sapone Marsiglia puro, ecologico, g 250 – involucro in plastica mista, € 2,20
Marseille pure soap, ecological, g 250 – packed in mixed plastics film, € 2.20

• Pipe rigate all’uovo da agricoltura biologica, g 500 – involucro in PP riciclabile, € 1,09
Lined ‘Pipe’ eggs pasta from organic farming, g 500 – PP recyclable pack, € 1.09

• Caffé 100% arabica da agricoltura biologica g 250 – lattina metallica e coperchio in PE riciclabili, € 3,75
100% Arabica Coffee from organic farming g 250 – tin metal lid and recyclable PE cover, € 3.75

• Riso bianco sfuso g 590 – pesato in sacchetto in PE-HD riciclabile, €1,32
White rice bulk g 590 – weighed in recyclable PE-HD bag, € 1.32

The most interesting novelty of this store is having finally found some bulk commodities such as rice and several vegetables, in addition to coffee cans instead of coffee packaged in bundles of non-recyclable mixed plastic. The convenience of bulk commodities is clear enough to see how little we paid for more than half a kilo of excellent varieties for ‘risotto’ and soups. As for coffee, we had already seen in common supermarkets cans by a note brand, but the price was likely to make us desist. While this kind of coffee we bought now, not only is in recyclable cans, but it is also organic, with a double benefit!

Altri prodotti comprati in Trentino/ Other products purchased in Trentino:

Organic yeast for pizza without emulsifiers (3 bags g 9 each) – in mixed plastic bag, € 2.07

Strawberry grape mustard, from organic farming, g 220 – Glass jar, € 3.21

Segue una successiva ondata di acquisti, sempre ad agosto / It is following a subsequent wave of buying, always in August:

• Carta igienica 100% ecologica 4 maxi rotoli – confezione in PE-LD riciclabile, € 2,08
Toilet paper 100% ecological 4 maxi rolls – pack recyclable PE-LD, € 2.08

• Acido citrico anidro puro, g 750 – barattolo in PP riciclabile, € 9,20
Pure anhydrous citric acid, g 750 – recyclable PP jar, € 9.20

• Bagno schiuma, con oli essenziali mediterranei, ml 500 – flacone in PETG riciclabile € 8,00
Bath foam, with essential Mediterranean oils, ml 500 – recyclable PETG bottle, € 8.00

100% apple juice from Trentino, organic farming, 1 l - glass bottle, € 2.51

Soybeans, from organic farming made with renewable resources, g 330 – glass jar, € 2.10

• Aglio in granuli da agricoltura biologica, g 50 – barattolo in vetro e coperchio in plastica, € 3,39
Garlic granules , from organic farming, g 50 – jar glass and plastic lid, € 3.39

• Aglio sfuso (2 teste), g 150 – pesato in sacchetto in PE-HD riciclabile, € 0,72
Garlic bulk (2 heads), g 150 - weighed in recyclable PE-HD bag, € 0.72

Among these products I wanted to specify that the citric acid is the most expensive but is soluble in water at 10 or 15%, then it is consumed very little and lasts a lot. It is used as remedy against limestone, as softening and rinse according to the data read in the book ‘A Guide to BioHappy Detergents’ and it is effective and does not pollute like traditional products.

On August, then we spent around € 114 to be divided ever for three.

Passiamo a settembre / On September:

• Birra biologica, cl 33 – in bottiglia di vetro, € 1,94
Organic beer, cl 33 - in glass bottle, € 1.94

100% apple juice, from organic farm, 1 l – glass bottle (reusable for the supply of milk from distributors), € 2.39

Muesli with organic amaranth, g 375 – in plastic package, € 3.29

Sugar cane organic Fair Trade, g 500 - cardboard box, € 1.80

• Olive biologiche in salamoia g 314 – barattolo in vetro, € 1,35
Olive living in brine, g 314 - glass jar, € 1.35

• Detergente per WC ecologico, ml 750 – flacone in PE riciclabile, € 3,70
Ecological toilet cleansing, 750 ml - bottle in PE recyclable, € 3.70

And then there was also the expense done at Ecomia of which I didn’t managed to bring out all the details.

September was the month we spent money higher, however, € 114 we divided mostly in two. Really in this expenditure I included the two organic and solidarity dinners that we had at Ecomia.
But if we see well over the period organic pasta fell strangely price. Given the brand of which we use most, one belonging to a chain of supermarkets, 500 grams fell in price from € 0.75 to € 0.67, which is a great news now, when all prices, especially those food, rise. We shall see if it is a trend or just a flash in the pan.

The next times I’ll show simply more significant costs and changes in prices on certain products, to warn on price increases. I’ll write soon!

Una bella canzone... / A nice song...

Sometimes ago a dear friend of mine, who is in Rome, saw my photo on the blog, where I was with hair to the wind, and, knowing that I love nature, she sent me the lyric of this song by Pierangelo Bertoli.

Still I didn't listen to it... but today another dear blogger friend remembered to me this thing and gave me the chance to listen to this song (and see the video), that was sung by Ligabue and used as a spot for tv from the Ministry of Environment.

So how can I say? A nice coincidence... some themes remain still valid in the hope someone could understand them...

EPPURE SOFFIA

Pierangelo Bertoli
(1977)

Beyond the sea...

We came in October, and it is already autumn ... until a few days ago it seemed even winter and, instead, last Sunday a beautiful sun rose in the afternoon! Just when we wanted it!
In fact Irish and me had planned to visit a park in Riccione, Oltremare, now famous for the advertising of the “curious dolphin”.

Well, I don’t like too much seeing animals reared in captivity, especially for a bad memory I have of a safari-zoo, when I was a child, but our friend, that works there, encouraged us to visit it. He told us of the variety of animals, of the structure of their host, of the organization that follows them and of the stiffness in checks and care... So, to go there, we waited a weekend free of commitments and now of the tourism chaos of previous months. And within me I went with great curiosity especially for the dolphins, animals that I had not ever seen before in my life!

The structure is really good, nestled in the green hills upstream of Riccione, without intrusive construction: the only quite visible are the building of 3d cinema and the one hosting “The time journey” and “Hippocampus”, but very integrated in patterns of the surrounding land. On entering someone could remain unpleasantly impressed by the ticket prices, but I can guarantee that, knowing what is behind and having visited the park, all money are worth to be spent!

We go to a sort of garden named “Lungofiume”. Here there are essences and other types of vegetation planted to recall the natural river environments. You may recognize them through the signs and explanations. There are also some objects of farming culture exposed, with surrounded plantations of grapes and fruit trees, typical of the area.

Through this avenue we arrive at the true entrance where a large sundial lying on the floor marks the current time and prelude the imminent time travel in nature. Around here you could find all the information points, refreshment and shopping.
But we are directed to greet our friend at the “Dolphin Lagoon”. And there was love at first sight: these creatures are magnificent! They swim in the big blue tub and seem a fun world! It is true that these dolphins are curious, so much that one of them, the smallest, sees the move and stop at a distant point, but in our direction, and floats on one side, so that with one eye observe us, and to draw our attention on him and getting noticed, begins to make strange pop! In practice he seems giving us welcome!
Already I know that these particular animals so later will make me feel incredible emotions!

So after the greetings we begin our tours behalf, we should do it fairly quickly because the shows are programmed and rotated seamless continuity.

We dedicate the first visit of fifteen minutes to the facility that houses the permanent exhibit on seahorses. These are beautiful little creatures that seem almost mythological. It makes a strange effect to comply in aquariums, that must be constantly kept under control. Because these animals are very sensitive and they need very specific food and habitat. Some species are truly incredible, like ‘leaf dragons’ that appear that fake vegetation in aquariums of our homes, or that little seahorses that are tiny creatures that appear to be a mini-planet, along with other very bizarre shaped invertebrates!

Leaving this round structure we can go to underground floors, where you can see a sort of ‘primordial greenhouse’ (called “Darwin”) and you can admire the fish and other marine species that belong to our seas closely, in the “Bay of breeds”, and magnificent huge reconstruction along the corridors. Through them you pass in front of the large windows that allow to observe the dolphins underwater, until you get to the truth outdoor park.

Then we head quickly towards the “Farm”, a group of houses and adjoining stable which faces an arena that is packed with people. The show begins with the song of a rooster and a nice factor begins to tell merrily the typical day of the farm letting know of many animals, the more unusual ones too like the hedgehog, the porcupine, the ferret, the pelican and two particular raptors. The laughs are many because the factor involves the audience and jokes about phobias of individuals harmless animals!

So the first hour in the park is passed. From the farm a journey that goes in the green and into other buildings begins. It’s sort of reconstruction of the Po Delta in miniature where lakes and rivers are home to geese, ducks, turtles, fish and reptiles and sometimes even species of migratory birds, typical of humid environments in Emilia-Romagna. It is easy to observe all these people hidden in viewpoints between the marsh reeds or from high wooden cabins.

Moving between these buildings and picnic areas we arrive in a moment to “Moulin of the Owl”, in front of which in a large grassy square raptors will perform in flight! A marvellous show to the eyes of those who, like us, appreciate the falconry as a moment of discovery: they are mysterious animals that would otherwise be almost inaccessible to our eyes! The falconers are teachers that inspire the flight of these birds with incredible wing openings, stratospheric speed and supernatural precision! There are hawks, buzzards, owls, eagles and even vultures and you can see them even a very close distance! Every time I admire the majesty of these animals, I think of us, as human, we should feel humble and small in their presence and often we do the opposite!

After the spectacle of raptors and a fun zigzag between lakes it comes perhaps the most beautiful part of our ‘journey’ the show of... dolphins!

We place among the medium ranks of the large arena, where our friend advised us to stay (then we’ll understand why), and wait the beginning. Dolphins begin to head from the middle of water because they have noticed increased human presence on tiers. They seem euphoric, and just approaching the handlers for the rest buckets with their meal, close to edges of the pan, they begin to make jumps. When the music starts and the presenter gave performance the opening, we remain in open mouth to see the timing, the big jumps, with which all together leave the tub and return in!
I can not describe how beautiful the next forty minute were... is not so much for the choreography that these incredible creatures do – thanks to the skill of trainers – but it is incredible the understanding that they demonstrate and this capacity to understand and of fun almost make them seem human beings!
I do not deny that certainly there were not splashing water, came up to us, to wet my eyes, but little tears! I would not have ever believed so much enthusiasm in front of the spectacle of trained animals. And now I know that these animals are not only there to fun people but they are often retrieved from situations dangerous in their environment and compromising their very lives. So they are loved, cuddled, fed and cared for with such care (and also with enormous costs) that we do not imagine! Like Mary G. the puppy of ‘grampus griseus’ – a particular species of dolphin – recovered in 2005 from the port of Ancona, who is now with the other dolphins and seems to be now one of them. They, too, we know by our friend, live our own feelings, love, friendship, sympathy and hate! Every visitor would touch, embrace them ... but they are not toys and nature tells us that it is better that they are able by themselves to express their affection for us, by the way they behave!

At the end of the show we do not have time to recover us by emotion, because there is the last show in 3d cinema. This is a half-hour documentary about the bottom of the seas where forests of kelp reign. Even this thrill for me was new, really an effective way to feel part of a habitat that otherwise would be impossible to visit!

At the end of the projection is already 18 and the park closes! Damn! We lost a lot of things! But surely we’ll come back!
In short, among many theme parks and entertainment, it’s precisely worth to make a quick trip to this oasis “beyond the sea”. Now our thoughts turn often to dolphins, raptors, seahorses and many animals that we observed, and to our dear friend that pushed us to approach this world! A heartfelt thanks and a greeting to our new friends!
