Don’t touch my milk on tap, please!

A few days ago I read on Beppe Grillo’s blog an article about the effects of a fall in sales that affected the automatic dispenser for raw milk and about the strange and striking in lowering of price of high-quality milk, contemporary, by the major brands.

What a coincidence! Two days after my partner came back home with the usual bottle full of fresh raw milk good of the day, but with news that left me so perplexed and bewildered: the automatic machine of raw milk near our house – of which opening, just a year ago, I was so excited – will end the distribution later this month.

I cannot describe the expression of great disappointment, painted on my face.
I always thought that the distributor of milk on tap was a truly manna from heaven, and tha local citizens, having not many shops close at hand, would have appreciated this new type of sale for milk, with the chance to buy it fresh 24 hours!
But after this news, in my mind, I immediately associated the closure of the distributor with the article read earlier and immediately I thought to write to the milk producer to ask for more explanation.

Although the bank holiday, the kind representative of that farm replied – and this shows how small producers are very transparent to its clients – fully confirming all my doubts about that: the sales of distributors have declined by over 50% and then the less frequented distributors (at least three) will be closed...

To understand why, we must go back to last December, when some media had spread bad news, calling into question the health of raw milk sold in distributors, so obliging the producers to affix to machines an absurd statement, well highlighted and written in red: “the product must be consumed after boiling.”

This news about the dangers of raw milk was also denied in court but have been a continual, inevitable decline in sales, throwing in discomfort those little honest producers who had tried to sell their milk through the short distribution chain.

This suggests that the work of dissemination of these falsehoods has benefited only the big manufacturers that had been threatened with the opening of the distributors. Now these big brands have extremely lowered the price of milk, purchasing it from Italian farmers to lowest prices.

In my personal experience I can testify that raw milk is a product of excellent quality. I never had any problems, indeed, I admit that my stomach digests it much better than pasteurized one. I boiled it rarely, only when, for some reason, I refrigerated it too late, or when I had to keep it for a few more days. In addition, the flavour and the consistency are significantly higher than milk sold in supermarkets. With milk distributor, we have the excellent home-made ice cream and yoghurt and we used it in the kitchen for many other recipes. I must also admit that I begun to appreciate the yoghurt only after we made it at home with this milk, and this shows that the genuine taste of things is unmistakable!

In addition to this, buying raw milk from the distributor has made me closer (in terms of distance and knowledge) to the producer. Who buys from the distributor can know where and how milk is produced, can talk with the farmers, discover pleasant surprises such as the attention that they often have towards environment and animals! All things that, instead, buying a product from a shelf of a supermarket, you may not even know the slightest...

And finally there is the significant appearance of waste reduction ... the liberation from mountains of tetrapack (which, they say, is recyclable but it is not known how and whether it is recycled) and a constant reuse of glass bottles, washed and checked personally...

Let me know what’s in the minds of those who gave heed to the false rumours and declined to buy an absolutely genuine and more controlled product.
I want to know why the big industry should always put itself on the top step and take away from us the right to choose, to information, transparency, instead of taking the cue from these local realities that try to preserve the land and its characteristics of environmental quality and product offerings.

Ridatemi il mio latte crudo alla spina!

Coincidenza???

    Nutro seri dubbi a riguardo.

  10. Aww, gosh!! :(((((

I wanted to ask you about the milk-machine!!

The 1st one was introduced to Slovenia recently, & I was really excited that you guys had them available in Italy for all this time & wanted to ask you about it!! :)

It is really bad news that some got closed.. Were some health problems found in individual milk-machines? Or just PR from big firms using tetrapaks? :(

I wanted to ask about the cleaning solutions for the milk-machines too.. Maybe you could write an article for ZeroWasteCheckout?

BIG PR promoting benefits of whole natural milk would be needed!!

I heard some Italian milk factories collapsed or something - at least one that our farmers from Slovenia were selling to! Imagine the distance & how long it took to get milk from northern Slovenia to your shelves!!

And now only those farmers that had a contract with Italian manufacturer directly could still give milk there, some that had a contract with Slovenian intermediary were just refused - & Slovenian milk industry didn't want their milk either! (with the crisis etc, maybe people are also drinking less milk? many have sensitivities etc..?)

/I thought about a milk-o-matic in our town too, lol!! :))
It just doesn't make sense to have milk from god-knows where (Hungary probably!) on the shelves in tetrapaks, when in the old days you could have fresh milk directly from farmers, even in schools!

    It's just soo totally unsustainable!!

Luckily we get it from a farmer directly, it's not organic, but at least it's local!!

..Magari presso gli enti ( usl - Is.

  13. Here I am, Layla!

Problems belonged to bad news that on last December were spread by some media... they said that in some cities of Italy there were some cases of infections by bacteria suspected to be in the raw milk from some distributors. This suspect was soon denied after several controls on the milk and machines.
But, as we say here, 'the omelette was done', and people had begun to avoid raw milk on the tap.

But behind the scene, on the other hand, there was the suspect that the major brands of milk had rig these news, to revenge the fact that they lost about the 20% of sales on the long-last milk in tetrapacks and similar...
(see Beppe Grillo's post on his blog)

Of course there was the lack of information and people hadn't the courage to verify those false news with the help of the internet or accepting the invite of many local milk producers to see directly in farms the care of hygiene and healt of their cows!

To front to the loss of sales, big producers had to import milk from the East Europe. This compromise the quality of milk because it has to be traded alog very big distances and be paesturized a lot of times at very high temperatures.

So, it's absurd that we have to import from you where lots of farmers here have to pay taxes for extra-milk, while you have to import milk from other countries! What a conflict! I can't understand why!

And at last see this video that shows how milk machine are cleaned and refilled: videoLucky who can get the milk locally as you do! ;)

  14. Thank you, Danda!!
For the links, & the explanation... :)

Is there a way to put a translation button on your blog, like Marco has it? I know you translate everything into English, I would really love to understand some of the comments too! :)

My Mum, who is very nit-picky, asked, 'What about the straw where the milk gets into your bottle?' (she thinks maybe some bacteria could develop there?) & 'It would be better, if the machines were inside, not outdoors..' (sun/heat & maybe outdoor-pollution?)
These are just her thoughts & immediate reaction!

It would be great if we could buy in supermarkets this way, & not just milk - everything! oil, detergents, etc! - though I agree, it may not be easy to convince them to do it? (except by law - outlaw tetrapaks or such?!!)

I do agree E.coli is more often associated with eggs or chicken or meat! so it was really very surprising (& slightly unbelievable!) to hear about milk in connection with it?!
It would be really interesting to see those tests or those journalists' bank accounts?!

I would love to learn more about these machines & the milk there.. Is it non-homogenized & organic?

  15. Hi Layla,
Thanks so much to you to be so interested in this discussion!

I think there's no possibility for bacteria to proliferate.
After the distribution of the milk, when you take the bottle and then close the door, a strong jet of water is spryed into the box of the dispenser. And all the machine is kept at a very low temperature... I hope that at the end of the day the man, who refills it, cleans everything very well!
At least I cannot say anymore... perhaps I can ask to Mr. Lanciotti...

Not all the machines are located outdoor, most of them are in some rooms at the ground floor of buildings, like showrooms of shops. The room that encloses the machine, in any kind of distributor, is isolated, constantly refrigerated and watched by a camera.
Just one thing could be complained: the outdoor distributors surely consume more energy than indoor ones.

So it would be really great to see them in some supermarkets, as it happens yet with detergents. But I fear that it will not happen for now... great brands are too much powerful then these little producers. Also for tetrapack I see a great struggle to put it outlaw!

And you're right to say that E.coli bacterium could be in eggs, meat and fish, but people use and eat them raw, without any law obliging sellers to say that them had to be cooked before! So it's a real nonsense to point the finger against the raw milk!

Raw milk on tap is classified in so called 'high quality milk'. So it could be also 'organic' (remember that organic means also that animals are in total freedom), but surely it is well controlled and certified everyday. Mine is only a 'high quality' one, but the farmer gives organic forages to cow, they say. I assure that's very good!

For further infos see this video (only Italian)And finally... the translation button is here, as you can see! Thanks for suggestions! ;)
