Un po’ d’aria fresca! / A breath of fresh air!

Warning: this title is not ironic!
It may seem a joke if I speak of fresh air in this very hot July, but it was really possible to enjoy it, going to the Apennines of Romagna, during the previous weekend… or better still when I think of it… brrr, I feel almost a breeze!

We took the advantage of this opportunity, in participating to the last trip with the group of Apennines of Romagna Guides (GAR), to which Irish and me joined far back. The group, in fact, organizes wonderful hikes, from one to more days, during all the year, with the possibility to discover nature, history, landscapes and traditional food of Romagna, even going far away to abroad.

The 18th and 19th July, the group has its summer celebration in the high Savio Valley. We profited of it because we wanted to spend two half-days, far from the rumours of beaches of Romagna and to see our nice friends of the group. What’s more it was a great relief to interrupt the pain of summer heat of the past days!

Arriving to the place of meeting we were surprised by the beautiful land in which the farmhouse is – very close to the Verghereto – point of reference and guesthouse in the night only for a small part of us. We booked the vacancy late, so we had to bring with pleasure our igloo tent, which now can count almost ten years of life, even it doesn’t show it!

The place is over thousand meters altitude. It is surrounded by very green valleys and mountains covered with woods and pasture lands. Along the slopes there are numerous farms full of cows, sheeps, goats, chickens, gooses and horses! I's like to be in another world! The only sight of all these things makes you happy and serene!

But we needed to do a walk, or better two! The first day we went for a hike on the Comero mount. Crossing pasture lands, bewaring of bulls (meeting a bull is not ever pleasant), we walked for few miles visiting the beauties of the place. Among these a beautiful beech of five century! What a spectacle! We immediately became friends! To embrace a tree is always a very extraordinary thing for me! And this was very special… he hosted a bird (Jinx torquilla) nest!

Even the day after we were committed to a path, this time longer… we crossed woods and streams, until arriving at the source of the Savio river, where we restored with fresh water and fruits.
Then, going up more, we had the chance to meet another strange inhabitant, alone on a plain… a yew, with a hole like a mysterious door to another land! And then a fabulous landscape. One side showed the crest of the Apennine between Romagna and Tuscany, with its recognizable green peaks. On the other side a never ending view to the sea!

And along all the path we had the possibility to taste some fruits directly from nature: cherries, strawberries ad raspberries! Very good! We were constantly delighted by the scent of pines and herbs from high altitudes, like thyme and mint…

L’unica serata trascorsa insieme è stata veramente eccezionale.
The one night spent together with the group was really great. The presence of a brick oven in the old farmhouse gave us the possibility to eat a wonderful pizza and sweet bread, apart from very good tarts… all made at home by expert hands and almost all by organic ingredients! And food is not so good if not accompanied by a good company! All fabulous friends, all with their personal experiences, anecdotes and funny moments as the sharing of their last trip in Corsica!

All these things were a real fresh breeze for us… we needed it!
See you to the next appointment with GAR!!!
