Incontrando Leo Hickman… / Meeting Leo Hickman… (AmbienteFestival ’09)

I bet that someone of you is wondering what yesterday evening was happened…
In a comment I said that I would go in Cavour Square, in Rimini, to participate to the events of AmbienteFestival, or for being informed on the alternative movement I mentioned in the previous posts. But there wasn’t any chance! There wasn’t any trouble, the public square was wrapped in a humid and calm atmosphere of an autumnal evening, with very few people.

Just a bit of timid persons movement was, indeed, under the famous ‘arches’.
So, avoiding any doubt, I decided to participate to the meting planned in the agenda “How much are we green?” with Leo Hickman, a famous British journalist of
The Guardian who collaborated with the Italian magazine Internazionale.
I yet heard about him on the blog of Almost Mrs. Average, and on various Italian and foreign portals about environment… but his face… mmh…
Ah, now I remember where I’ve seen him! On the cover of his book “A Life Stripped Bare, My Year Trying to Live Ethically”, a very singular cover where he appears as his mother generated him and covered only with a cardboard box full of vegetables… Eh eh!
Well… he must be a character, I said to myself!

And I had the confirm! How all the British he is a person with sense of humour, sincere and with clear ideas. No shyness in telling about his challenge he had some years ago, explained in his book.
But these British love to take challenges!!! Perhaps at least I have a bit of British soul, don’t you think? Well, I find’em fantastic!
Leo Hickman was able to involve his family (his wife and kid) to live in a completely ethic and environmental sustainable way for an entire year.
So he told us about the decision to not buy anything more at the supermarkets, buying food only by local farmers and he told how he decided – despite his wife’s will – to use washable nappies for his child. Then how he did holidays with his family in Umbria without travelling by airplane or car, but going only by train. With his family he valued also their energetic consumes, which thing was then useful to write lots of successful articles about apparently banal threads like washing dishes, using electrical kettle for coffee or the use of other domestic appliances that make the difference for environment.

His constant worry is to maintain high the interest about all environmental themes which regard the daily life, so as to avoid that ecology become a fashion, like many people think. He hopes it could become a real lifestyle for us and then for new generations. And, just having care of the future, this time Hickman concentrated his efforts in studying the impact that tourism has on environment. He brought our thoughts on the fact that, if tourism is continuous expansion – with low-cost flight and with the increasing possibility for the developing country to fly in the same way we do now – carbon emission will strongly increase, a real danger for our Planet. So, he suggest some very creative solutions, which are worth to be read in his new book with a worry title “The Final Call”.

At last, in a very little hall, with very few people as audience, I had the chance to know this influential and at the same time affable person. Shyly, at the end of the speech, I asked him why the great ecological movement we see in the UK – seeing the experiences from the blogs, like The Rubbish Diet or MyZeroWaste – doesn’t get off the ground here in Italy. And at the end I asked him a personal suggestion on how to involve more people in my daily battle to diffuse a culture about a more conscious lifestyle. I was very surprised to know that also Hickman believes in the blogs and the internet for raising the interest of people. He said that I hadn’t to wonder if in Italy enviroment isn’t felt like a serious problem. Ten years ago, in facts, as he started ti write about these themes, English saw Germans as example to follow. So what does it mean? Is the way to eco-revolution longer here? I hope no. But Hickman says that when the change happens it evolves very quickly!

Here’s the very short synthesis of a meeting that made me happy a lot. Even if about some themes (as on the nuclear) I wasn’t totally agree with him, I can say that Hickman is very wide open, he accepts also some compromises in his life but he is able to make unique his experience which is under everybody’s eyes: he is the prove that human being has created so much unnecessary things that in a way or another will come bcak as a boomerang. He is the prove that everyone could make something useful, even if this thing is little, it has a great significance if put together with other’s actions!

To sum up I add that at the end of the evening I also had personally a clarification about the problem of sea pollution that moved the associations of citizens f Rimini against the festival.
I hope that an official conference could be organised soon, so as everyone could particicpate, say his worries, ad find solution with the others. It must be this the way to act… is environment in all our hearts or not?

However, tomorrow, it will be an intense day, with the visit to the new edition of Ecomondo exposition and the direct participation o ManiTese at the festival of fair and sustainable economy “Ecomia”. Then we will directly enter in the Zero Waste Week! So keep to look updates!

  1. Sounds like an interesting meeting!

Too bad that so few people were present! Maybe they didn't advertise it enough?
But then you got to talk to him more easily! :)

You know, I've been told 'The British are not so eco' by a Brit, so hmm.. Maybe this all is still yet to exapnd, in Britain AND in Italy, Slovenia etc etc!
It's good to be a part of this though!

Is he pro-nuclear otherwise? (Due to the CO2 argument?)
Sometimes we learn things through different viewpoints too!
And it sounds like an interesting book, both of them!

  3. @ Hi Layla! Yes, it was a great evening and the presence of few people wasn't due to advertisements. The festival, in which the meeting was included, was well advertised, on the web, on local tv journals and on posters all around the city. I suppose that citizens' mind aren't still ready.
And I hope that in the future people from all the countries will be eco in the same way! I feel proud to be part of these changing events.
And, yes, Hickman seems pro-nuclear, even if he said only that it is better than worse... but this doesn't change that he's very green-minded!

Forse era reduce da "La vita ridotta all'osso".
Trovo molto interessante il tema del turismo. Bisognerà rinunciarci o vi saranno degli aerei a pedali!?

  5. Ciao Max!!!
LOL sei veramente inglese dato il tuo sense of humor!!!
