SOS Recycle: speciale Natale n.2 / Christmas special #2

Let's continue the blog-post of SOS to front the coming festivities in a greener way. Yes, tomorrow we well be again in front of tables full of food and full of... packaging!

On our festive tables, bottles of wine and sparkly wine don’t miss. It is easy to recycle glass, but many ignore that you have to eliminate all the parts made by different materials from glass. So the capsule that wraps the bottleneck, for example, can be in PVC or different thermoplastic materials, with a little upper tin part. Or it can be entirely made by a tin foil. It is easy to recognize it because it is cold at the touch. You can recycle it with metal cans when it is tin foil or with plastic when it is made by plastic. The little metal “cage” that keeps close the cork must be recycled with metals. Corks can be natural or made by plastic. If you aren’t sure of the kind of plastic (some manufacturers as Normacorc specify it) it’s better to throw the plastic ones in the unrecyclable waste.

Who has the time to prepare everything at home? Even if the internet helps to make delicious homemade Christmas foods like “panettone” and “torrone”, many buy ready-made and extra-packed meals.
It is the case of the classic panettone or pandoro. I heartily suggest squashing the cartons of the packaging and recycling with paper! On the contrary, for the inner cellophane sachets you must check the recycling local facilities, to know if cellophane is recycled with plastics. The paper that wraps the cake isn’t recycled, because it is wax paper. Ah, I can’t forget the ribbon that is on the top of the packaging. You can’t recycle it but reuse as lace for closing sacks.
As regards nougats, chocolates and sweets, you can similarly recycle boxes, but pay attention to the inner packaging. As usual they are wrapped in cellophane or metalized plastic sachets. The last material isn’t recyclable, as I said in a comment of a previous post, because it is composed by plastic and aluminium. For this identical reason you can’t recycle packaging of "zampone" and sausages that, on next days will end to occupy a lot of space in our bins.

So, I suggest to you with heart to buy with the idea to make less waste in mind. If you can’t renounce to traditional sweets and you haven’t the time to make them at home, please go to your trusted bakery that will make them surely with fewer packages than industrial ones. If you need to buy meat or fish, please go to the local butchers or fishmongers and bring a reusable container with yourself, so to avoid throwing away a lot of wrapping stuff. Your bin will be thankful to you and less smelly and you’ll need less effort to take big sacks of waste in front of your door!

E buon Capodanno! ;)
To sum up, you can overdo but with a bit of salt more, not in your dishes, but in your head. It’s good for everyone! And have happy New Year's celebrations! ;)

SOS Recycle: speciale Natale n.1 / Christmas special #1

Did you spend a good Christmas? Eh eh, did you think that I would have abandoned the blog on these days? Though I’m not well equipped to update and visit it every day, I couldn’t miss to publish a post on a SOS to quietly front the little home waste-emergencies typical of these festive days.

Really the request came from a friend of mine, Miriam, met during AmbienteFestival. Sometimes ago, and I apologize with her for this, she asked me via mail for an aid to solve some waste issues typical of Christmas.

Of course, there are many things to say, but now I take the chance of the moment, being totally involved in the Christmas atmosphere, to front directly problems. I must admit that I’m in such difficulties, these days. Living feasts with my family I’m not so able to keep everything under control, especially waste. But let’s try to make order and save what we can.

We just exchanged our presents, packed in every ways and shapes, and with every kind of material. As you open gifts, you can save the wrapping paper, and recycle it, only if it is not plastified or laminated. By scrapping it you can recognize the presence of a light plastic film. When you find it, or find metalized applications on paper, it is more appropriate to throw it in rubbish. And you must eliminate metallic staples and pieces of scotch from paper sheets with patience, before recycling. Ribbons are generally in plastic. They must be thrown in the unrecyclable waste. But be careful to some parts, which can be saved and reused to close other little gifts. Other kinds of ribbons are made of packthread or natural raffia, so they can be recycled. If you have any doubt don’t recycle them.

Just a suggestion for next occasions: buy very simple wrapping paper, as the brown one (you can decorate it as you like) and use fabric ribbons or packthread to close packs, trying to use less scotch. Sometimes you can have a nicer effect closing packs with some parts of old Christmas decorations or dried fruits, beads or recycled buttons.

Be careful to the packaging of gifts. After Christmas you can see in the streets bins surrounded by bulky unbroken toys boxes. Press cartons and recycle them with paper, eliminating plastic windows. When it is possible to recognize the kind of plastic, blisters have to be recycled with plastic.

Consultate i vostri servizi municipali.
Other bulky things you can even find on the way, after celebrations, are the disposable plastic or paper kitchenware. We must remember that, even being marked with recycling symbols, they aren’t accepted from most of recycling services. You must check your local facilities. Even if they are in paper, cups and plates have a thin plastic film that make them waterproof, so carton isn’t recyclable. So, it is even better to not use disposable kitchenware, unless you can find, in your trusted store, PLA or cellulose-pulp kitchenware that are biodegradable and compostable.

As regards food trays the issue is similar. If you are in front of a PS (polystyrene) tray, it can be useful to consult local recycling facilities, but remember that trays have to be cleaned from food scraps or oil. If trays are in carton, perhaps you can eliminate the upper plastic film to recycle or compost if dirt. At last aluminium foil and trays can be recycled, after cleaned them from the remnant inner dirt.

I miei auguri... / My wishes...

Da dandaworld

Oh oh oh… ci siamo! :)

Auguri

Oh oh oh… here we are! :)
Are you ready for celebrations?
Well, I’m not so sure. Days are flown away and Christmas is at the door. As usual, a lot of things to do, people to meet and a great amount of appointments (work, hours as volunteer, etc.). All is going with the smile on my face, luckily.
Until now we didn’t fell in hysterias… many things (planning celebrations, gifts, wishes, blogposts) are still undone. But if we will not able to do everything, does anyone care? Christmas is a chance that mustn’t be wasted and we have to catch it to enjoy traditions and affections in serenity.
Isn’t it? This is what I wish for you.
So my motto for this Christmas is:

Don’t waste your Christmas!

Cheers

Oggi parliamo di… libri e DVD / Today let’s speak about… books and DVDs

We are in full Christmas season and perhaps you’ll be intent in searching for some books or DVDs to give as gift.
One as me, who loves environment, should not praise the use of printed paper, or the purchase of DVDs or CDs. Paper and digital editions have a huge environmental impact for both production processes and disposal of raw materials.

But who imagines a world without books? Who wants to refuse to watch a movie comfortably sit in a sofa at home? Well, I myself wish that our habits will change, even if then I should find another greener job. ;)

Anyway it is worth to spend our money for books and DVDs with an interesting an educational content, as well as simply pleasant. They are also long lasting objects and they can be easily exchanged with other people who can understand the same messages.
Some of these messages are often cut away from the great market of movies and books.

At proposal, I want to show you a documentary recently published from MacroVideo, a publisher that focus many books about the ecological dimension. This book was suggested to me from the same editor.

Let’s talk about “The Power of Community”, a movie which tells on the “extraordinary efforts and tenacity of a people that was the first to experiment the lack of oil in all its faces”. The scenery is Cuba, where, after the energetic crisis in the ’90s, people decided to avoid the risk to have heavy consequences for food and society, bravely changing their lifestyle.

“Thanks to co-operation, saving money, reuse, preservation and community spirit, Cuba reduced to the minimum the energy consumes, renouncing to some comforts and waste typical of our time. The movie shows a real example of how it is possible to reduce consumes and energy waste, turning back to a rhythm of life and work in the respect for natural cycles. I shows also how to change from an intensive farming and industrial production, with the use of oil derivates, to a growing and creation of organic farms, urban allotments and industries with a lower energetic impact”.

Surely this documentary, together with the reading of the enclosed booklet, gives very important foods for thoughts, good in a moment like this, in our own reality with an uncertain future. It is a positive message, as you can imagine from the key-phrase suggested from the movie:

“Do what you can, with what you have, with whom you are and where you are”

The authors of the documentary, Faith Morgan, Pat Murphy and Megan Quinn Bachmann, are part of the Arthur Morgan Institute for Community Solutions, a no-profit organisation founded in 1940, which promotes co-operation, sustainability and use of alternative energy sources.

I link for you the file in the Macro Publishing website, where you can discover other details and watch a preview of the movie.

I think that I can surely put it on the virtual wishing list I’ve just inaugurated on my page on the aNobii website.

When I’ll have the possibility to watch “The Power of Community” and read the written contents, I’ll let you know my impressions. So I wish you to have a good vision, in the case you’ll watch it before me. In the meantime, please be careful to consume, especially on these days and times! ;)

P.s.: un ringraziamento particolare a Giulia Cavalieri per le informazioni e i materiali sul documentario / a special thank you to Giulia Cavalieri for infos and materials on the documentary

On the way to Christmas!

Here I am, I’m returned. Sorry, I didn’t leave for the Maldives, anticipating Christmas holidays, but I needed to stay a little quite, far from the computer screen, to own more time.

These days passed in a Christmas atmosphere, a thing that someone of you hate. I ever had adored this season. When I was a child this time was joyful for me: the church chorus, the making of decorations and nativity scene, the handcrafts at school and home, money saved to make gifts and to see smiles on the relative’s faces, when they received.

I must admit. With the time going away the magic of Christmas is lost. To buy gifts is more a worry than a pleasure. But I try to take with myself the pleasant memories of festivity, trying also to extend the benefits. Every year I invent something new to live the moment with more happiness.

So Irish and me found a bit of time – we forced to do it, because we are very busy – to have a weekend in Trentino, going back where we went a year and half ago in summer. The idea was that to go visiting the Christmas market of Trento and then adding a walk in the near lands, arriving to Val di Non. Travelling by train, of course! We were lucky to find snow, fallen the day before. It was only enough to make a light enchanting veil on the land. What a marvellous sight!

We met Daniela again and she welcomed us in a very worm way. She brought us to see the new KlimaHouse – a perfect nest built in a very smart way – and she offered us a lot of handmade sweets. It’s worth to quote her fabulous apple strudel!

We loved the sight of the white lands where apple grow, even with bare trees, and we had a trip to the near town of Cles, where the Christmas didn’t change the quite atmosphere. We were surprised by the presence of a milk on tap self-distributor machine in the centre of the town. Then we couldn’t resist to a hot chocolate and a romantic shot…

In Trento the atmosphere was definitely more busy, with a lot of people packed and maybe stressed for travelling by car! They looked at us badly, seeing that we took the luggage along – in the train station a luggage deposit is missing – a little weigh, balanced from the tranquillity to travel and do other pleasant things: reading, chatting, yawning, eating, listening to music and… meeting friends too!

If someone wants to go there, I suggest train heartily. You will avoid tailbacks, stress, to look for parking, or to be packed during some hours. Then the little train that from Trento goes in Val di Non, arrives to Marilleva, Val di Sole, a famous ski station, and the travel is free for skiers!
It's a pity that Irish and me are able not to ski but only slide on trash sacks! LOL
The Christmas market of Trento is rich of beautiful handcrafted things – even if there are imported gifts too – but in the neighbourhood there are lots of markets too, look here. Trento could be also the first step to go toward Alto Adige, to visit the South-Tyrolean markets. Our friend Carmine knows it well, isn’t it? ;)

At the end we turn back home with lots of bags – paper bags except one – and other clothes bags with some little souvenirs of this short but intense weekend.
And Christmas atmosphere continues… our Christmas LED lighted tree is ready and a good scent of chocolate cookies is around home.

There’s a decoration I’ve made entrirely with reuse materials (bulb lamps, saved from landfill, and old unused nail polishes). The suggestion came from Vivere Verde with whom I am thankful to giving always lots of ideas. But if you want to prove to make this decoration be only careful to make the creation outside your home, or at least make it dry out there, to avoid breathing the smell of nail polish. Or you can buy water varnish or colours more appropriate for glass.

But there’s a lot to do more!
Saturday 12th we will be committed into a special event. A very good occasion that the organisation of Mani Tese offers at the Podestà’s palace in Rimini to buy some second-hand objects and give a second life, perhaps as gift for sensible people or to help the people of Burkina Faso. The market will be extended to Sunday 13th with a fantastic
Kitsch Auction, with a real auctioneer and a lot of fun!

So, what a busy time! And we must prepare in time to front the amount of waste we will do on Christmas, hoping that, this year, we will make less waste and consume in a more smart way! But we will speak soon about these. For now I’m going singing…

Dubito.
It is clear that fitness helps our health and keep our body in good conditions to front daily life.
But did you ever calculate the impact that these activities have on our environment? And consequently on our health? I fear you don't.

If someone well thought to save energy from fitness activities with high technology, it is not enough the commitment that some manufactures in the market of fitness have toward environmental impact.

Our dear Gio, from the Giovanna 2.0 blog, is wondering about a recycle dilemma that could regard any of us, me included. Who haven't a fitness mat at home? Or a mat for camping and outdoor activities? I have two of them, one that is 20 years old and another more recent, both used for camping.

Many people ignore that most of mats for fitness are made of a expanded PVC formula. PVC is one of more toxic material we have created on this planet. There are, of course, other exceptions. You can find special PE or PP foam mats (it’s an ecologically inert material). Or some mats covered with a BTex® material which I wasn’t able to collect infos, even though the same initials are used to indicate a mix of petrochemical derivates which are causes of pollution. And you can read here again about other materials as PER, EVA, TPE.

If PVC packaging is recyclable, other items made with the same material aren’t and they go in landfill or incinerators. So I suggest to ring to local recycling facilities centres for disposal.

Anyway, if mats aren’t very bad, you can donate them to some charity organisations or put them in the bins for collection of second hand stuff. Perhaps a second use is possible.
Or you can reuse them as this site suggests for carpets: i.e. you can use as mulch for plants or insulate your compost bin, you can use in the car boot as to line the floor, or cut in pieces to put under heavy furniture to protect carpets or parquet, or as decorative panels for creative handcrafts.

At last if you need to purchase it again, ask to the seller more infos about materials, preferring those long lasted and natural ones, like mats for yoga in natural rubber.

This is valid for all the fitness categories of products, as i.e. wearing and accessories. For your shopping do prefer to purchase products made by recycled or organic material (some great stores yet sell them).

Riflettete gente!
And to conclude, please look here in the States what has been organised. Here there’s nothing similar. It makes me reflect!

So, sport people, move, yes, but also move green! ;)
