Three days are passed since some sick minds harmed nature for another time. We heard the news of million tonnes of fuel poured in the Lambro... a river that came into a new life in many years of special cures by the environmental associations.
In my mail box the news came as a knife that hurted me a lot and made me sad for all that day and more.
My friend Riccardo of the Wutel.net blog went in person to the place of disaster.
He told me of a icy situation that no images or videos are enough to comment.
He told me of death and silence, in a place where the only rumors are the flow of water and the tweets of birds.
He told me about an unpleasant smell that gives disgust to stomach and head.
He told me about animals who were confused and deprived of their habitat, of their life source. His fear, like mine, is that an absurde action made in few seconds won't be repaired from the same human hand and nature will take years to restore the injury.

After the sadness, ina a second moment anger arrived.
Because the lawsuit was against unknown people.
Because since the first time the TV journals tried to give less significance to the fact.
Because this episode hurted only the sensibility of few people.

Now fear is coming.
Pollution can come to the Delta of the Po. Even though the river always suffered for pollution, abusive download of toxic liquids, for the use of chemicals in farming and for the exploitation of hydric resources, the delta is a unique environment, where a lot of animal species live. Now they are in danger and they are not the only ones. Lots of plants typical of humid regions are in danger too, as crops and all human activities along the river. And the Po flows into the Adriatic sea.

This disaster mustn't be forgotten. Even if they will try to assure us and say that all is under control, we must be waked up and be informed. On the contrary we will be taken to believe that to pollute a river is a stupid thing and crimes as this will repeat even more, until we will drown in our same polluted indifference.

SOS Recycle: occhiali 3D / 3D glasses

Seeing that in the previous post I spoke about 3D movies, I profit to shed light on a request from Caty, of lacasasull’albero blog:
“… Where to recycle 3D glasses that you need to buy and take home? And, above all, why to oblige everyone to buy a pair each movie you go to see, creating much more waste?”
The questions are more than proper, dear Caty!

After Watching Avatar 3D, glasses into recycle box. (via CanadaPenguin)

To say the truth, I can’t add nothing new on the topic, but only say that the new generation 3D glasses – not those ones in carton and coloured filters we used far ago – aren’t recyclable, because lens and frame are made by different plastics which aren’t recyclable.
So I can close the blog post here, being sorry for Caty, but on the contrary I want to focus on the problem she underlined.

As regards the 3D movie screenings there are many technologies. According to the different kind of 3D film, each projected in a different way, the kind of 3D glasses to wear changes. So you can have a pair of Dolby 3D glasses or a circularly polarized glasses, as the Real 3D ones, that many of you used recently. Than there are many other kinds, more complicated. If you want to know more have a read on the web.

Now, it seems that in Italy last projections are based on the two systems I quoted and it seems that as for the Dolby 3D the glasses are only rented to the audience, with a surplus on the ticket price, those Real 3D ones are sold a part from the ticket and left to the audience at the end of the movie.

I think that I had the first kind of glasses during the Avatar projection, so in theory, at the end of the movie, my glasses were collected with others and I hope that they were sterilized at UV lamp, in order to be reused for the next projection.
As regards Caty, I think that she used the second type of glasses, that are sold in a transparent plastic sachet. But why to buy them?
This is avoided abroad, as you can read here at the links I posted.
Gli occhialetti in questione all’estero vengono “riciclati” o meglio riusati.
In the other countries 3D glasses are “recycled” or better reused. This means that they are collected in boxes at the exit of the theatre and are cleaned and checked as I said, in order to be reused.

But we Italians like to be distinguished from the others.
And do you know why? Aren’t we too much hooked with pathologies and absolute hygiene? Of course, none wants to wear a dirt pair of glasses on his nose. But if they are sterilized, where’s the problem?
Give a look yourself about we are hooked with diseases: whatever is the search engine, try to search the words “riciclare occhiali 3D” (in Italian). After that, try to search the words “recycle 3D glasses” in English. So, in the first case you will see a list of Italian articles about the expected diseases that a pair of 3D glasses could transmit from a person to another. In the second case, you will find articles where the main topic is the real environmental impact the disposable 3D glasses can have.

Don’t you think that we are exaggerating?
Italy is a country where the disposable objects are too much diffuse ad where recycle, reuse and the use of bulk product find hard to take off. This because we are literally obsessed by pathologies. But it could be enough to pay more attention and behave honestly, observing rules, to avoid that our hygiene mania turn back as a boomerang on our health!

Buona visione 3D a tutti! ;)
Let’s think about it and, if we are newly going to the cinema, let’s read infos on the websites, on what is the kind of projection, what the 3D glasses, finding if a reuse is possible. Probably in other theatres it is allowed to take you own 3D glasses you previously bought, after having checked that the technology is the same.
And if you are forced to buy them, assert yourself and show that we aren’t spendthrift people which are hygiene maniacs!
Enjoy your 3D vision everybody! ;)

Guardando “blu” attraverso un paio di occhialetti 3D / Seeing “blue” through a pair of 3D lens…

I love the fantasy genre, I love high tech movies, I love the stories that move you in the deep of your soul. And all these things made me go to watch… Avatar.
I don’t like the crowd in cinemas when a movie is too much famous, I don’t like the gunfire movies, I don’t like the “American” kind of film. And all these things made me go to watch Avatar with a very prejudiced mood.

After having read many favourable reviews and comments about the movie, I couldn’t wait to see it. We went no less than two times in the only multiplex of the city before finding a show with seats not in the first line.
Before doing the last attempt, I found on the internet the movie trailer to ensure myself that it was really worth to go… but I wasn’t so enthusiastic. If I previously didn't read anything about the movie, probably I wouldn’t have done the effort to go for the third time in a shopping centre and wait for no less than 5 hours before being in a seat with a pair of 3D glasses.

Ma… ne è valsa la pena.
But… it was worth.

I don’t want to add redundant comments to all what was said on the movie.
I just want to say that it is impressive from a digital graphic point of view – I was a bit disappointed by the view that was disturbed by an inappropriate screen and uncomfortable 3D glasses –.
The built scenery and shots are more than marvellous. Spectacular and exciting views on a world that, even a bit similar to ours, is strongly inspired to it.
If animals have a Jurassic look, the fantastic flora is built in a real symmetry with rules of our nature. To add, the breathtaking landscapes – that you can imagine as a different evolution of our planet – have a strange geology, given by different physical laws.

Even not having a very original plot, the story of Avatar has the right ingredients for a fantasy that isn’t too metaphysical and far from reality. On the contrary, it is clear that it has been conceived as the projection in the future, and in another planet, of what is happened – or still happens everyday in our Earth – far from our eyes.

In fact, as you imagine, what convinced me to go to watch the movie was the loud green message that is at the base of the story: the defence of the planet and its living beings. A praise goes to all the creators that showed this reality in a way never done before.
All had– and will also have – the chance to watch
Avatar. I’ve seen queues of teens, kids with parents, girls in shopping mood and also old people.
Did the message arrive in everyone’s head?

I have some doubt alas!
In my own opinion, everything was too much stuffed with guerrilla, weapons and improbable situations typical of American movies (is it not a case if the director is the same of Terminator), where the wicked resists until the last breath, to achieve his aim.
I fear that the green message is lost in the usual fight between good and evil.

Some laughs in the audience made me thinking that. People laugh at seeing natives dressed with few clothes, or seeing their rituals or laugh at the strange and sudden metamorphosis of an animal.
So I think to our history, when the human foot is got off new shores and unknown lands. I think to the African tribes, to the Amazonian Forest, to the Indian reservations. I think how poor we are.
We are always the same. We are wretched. The “different one” makes us laugh as if our reality is the best and the more sane.
Facing the new we think that it’s better to “take samples”, staying at distance, coldly analysing and ending to envy and hanker every richness we find, distorting it.
Our senses are asleep, our eyes are closed. We don’t appreciate and misunderstand energy and life that our planet gives us under different shapes.

Going out from the cinema, many felt relief. Me for the heat and the tiredness to wait and be sat , many for the happy end that came before many dramatic surprises. But the most, I believe, were relief saying “it’s only a movie”.

Invece, guardiamoci attorno.
But let’s see all around us. We are destroying our Earth. We are chopping down every green centimetre we see toward us, to build, to exploit the soil. We don’t set up a feeling with the living beings we find in our habitats. We have to touch and uproot every particular thing we find. And when we are in front of a different culture we behave in a ridiculous and irreverent way.

To sum up Avatar is a movie that is worth to be seen. And many times too, to catch every detail of the human facets that here are put in front of us as in a mirror… and also to think about it.
Each of us can discover his “avatar”, not another aspect of our person that behaves in a different and separate way. Our “avatar” can be the deepest part of our being, the most sensible and instinctive, the part that has still roots in the environment in which we live.
With the hope that this “avatar” could prevail on the bad aspects of our way to be “human”.

Giusto per ricordarvi che... / Just to remember that...

... oggi si celebra M'illumino di meno 2010! / ... today let's celebrate M'Illumino Di Meno 2010!

If everything is going to be all right, I'll be committed in a nightly urban trekking in the city with the GAR group. And I'll use a crank handle penlight to light my path. Otherwise I'll have the usual and but lovely candlelight dinner, and you?

"The animal instinct in me"...

Since the start of this year, I promised to myself to walk with you on a path to the meditation.
Well, daily events offer a lot of topics to think about our nature. A very strange nature, detached from the same world in which it lives, the human nature.

Though it’s not this the thing I want to focus our attention. I just want to invert our point of view.
We usually hear to talk about our relationship with animals, putting the human being at the centre and wondering if our behaviour toward thems is right or wrong. Then we always continue to establish our supremacy, even if sometimes it’s unintentional.

But, have you never watched animals closely? Did you wonder about how they see us, if they are able to think, approach and communicate with us?
I am sure that, if you have a pet, you’ll know what I am talking about.

I am not so lucky. When I was a child I had some goldfishes, some birds that on time flew away from the cage, and that’s that. But I often looked carefully at animals. For example, I looked at the magpies from the window of my room, at the swallows, at the dogs that were left alone by their owners on the verandas of holiday homes.
And to watch gave me a lot of wonderful surprises. I think that it’s very important to look at animals to understand them in the best way.

Now, in our garden, my companion and me are committed to offer a refuge with a little food for birds who come here. When I can, I look carefully at them.
Sparrows, blackbirds, robins, great tits, blackcaps, black redstarts, and other species I didn’t recognize are popping in the garden. They don’t arrive all together, but alternate… some pop in a year, others the year after. In short, it’s all a continual coming and going.
Perhaps the seaside is a transit place for many species. Here in Rimini, it’s even easy to see grey herons on the Marecchia river.

But, in my little sphere, it’s curious to look at the behaviour of our plumed friends.
As, for example, when they come near the manger we built with some wooden leftovers from a wine-rack. We didn’t finish it and we have to hang it on a pine. Now it is on the ground and birds don’t trust of it. Blackbirds go near it, steal crumbs and escape. Great tits and robins are more brave and go in and out the manger, dragging out the tray with crumbs. They have different tastes! They steal bread, cakes or cookies crumbs one another. And you want to burst out laughing, but, after all, they are fighting for surviving.

Chissà, ho pensato, cosa pensa di me.
But the thing that impresses me a lot, since the year is started, is the behaviour of a very special robin. I’ve just told you some time. He’s our “Orange little”, a creature that sometimes looks at you from the garden wall and seems a little orange with two very black eyes.
This little creature leaves you astounded.
He hasn’t fear, but, comes to look for us from a window when he doesn’t see us taking his “lunch”. He calls us with a single "tweet". He looks at us from the wall when we set the food in the tray, then he waits that we turn a bit away, and flies down to eat. When he’s sated, he starts to sing, quietly and continuously. It’s a sort of “thank you”. If we are still around he looks at us an moves his tail at the rhythm of his melody.
He’s a marvellous being.
Sometimes we are working in the garden and he pops in, following and looking at us. Once I crouched and, at the distance of a pair of meters, he looked at me jumping around the point I stood. I couldn’t believe!
Who knows what he was thinking of me. It’s certain that he recognizes us, looks for us and sings for thanking us. He is almost a human!

If only we could live in harmony with all the animals, trying to understand how they see us, what they think of us and prove for us!

On the contrary… I can’t think that in Italy a law, that has still to be shortly approved, is extending the hunting period!
Neither I can think that some people still go hunting!
Thinking on our flying fauna… how could they kill such a little and intelligent creatures, that still trust in us?
I shiver when I think that there’s still someone who enjoys to kill animals who live in the same own world. They contribute to the same food chain we are part of and they are part of the life cycle of our planet. They make our world beautiful while we are destroying it.
SAY STOP HUNTING!

I ask you to spread awareness among people you know. Our government is making a great mistake. Wake up, support campaigns against hunt. Make aware people that this is the more foolish law that is becoming a sad and crude reality.
I point out also an on-line petition, organized by LIPU (Italian League for Birds Protection), that – ok, if it hasn’t a great legal value – has a great commitment for increasing awareness. If you don’t want to sign it, please read their articles and put a link on your web pages. Your plumed friends will be grateful.

As I promised, I’m coming back with superhero clothes to solve people’s problems! LOL
Of course, I’m joking!!!
Unfortunately superheroes don’t exist and all the problems can’t be solved in the best way.
But each of us can be a hero in such a way and avoid certain situations.
Speaking about waste, as in all the other SOS Recycle blog posts, I believe that everyone can do his part, avoiding waste.

But there’s something we can’t avoid. Even more we are obliged by law to produce and pretend them, each time we buy something.
I’m speaking about cash register receipts.
And since we are on winter sales, it happens that a lot of receipts accumulate in your wallet.

Invece no.
Si tratta di carta termica.
As many of you, I was previously deceived from their apparently usual aspect too. And as many of you, I fell in the mistake to recycle receipts with paper.
But there’s paper & paper!
Did it happen to you that, storing an old cash register receipt, after a long time it appeared erased?
Well, in my naivety I thought that it would be some special ink that erases itself by time. And I thought that paper was a normal coated one. But I was wrong.
It was thermal paper.

I discovered this thing thanks to my dear Alessia who wrote me, asking where to throw cash register receipts. I knew the existence of thermal and chemical paper, but I imagined that its use was delimited to fax or to carbonless paper which is in registers and notes for taxes.

But the cash register paper too is a thermal one, because types we see printed are thermally fixed on paper by needles. This paper takes a different colour with hot temperature. It is easy to recognize, because it is very smooth at touch and has different tones of colour on each side.
In short, you can’t recycle this paper.
And so for chemical paper for fax, carbonless paper, carbon paper, and all paper with a different kind of print. You must throw it in the normal waste. Many guides or website of local waste services say the same. I checked it by mailing to my local waste service. And had the confirmation.

But not all the cash register receipts are printed on thermal paper. If you have some doubts, please don’t recycle.

We didn’t want to make waste, we are forced to make it!
I only hope that in the future the paper manufacturers will study a more green thermal paper.
Something is yet changing: some foreign websites are selling some thermal recycled paper for POS or cash registers and/or some free chlorine ones.

Insomma, alla fine, è sempre meglio… risparmiare!
To sum up, at last, it is even better to... save money!
