Un colorato sabato pomeriggio a Ravenna… / A coloured Saturday afternoon in Ravenna

Ravenna is a beautiful city of art. If you hadn’t still the chance to visit it, plan it!
I visited it the first time ten years ago, with my boyfriend, leaving from Rimini by train with bikes and exploring it all, arriving to St. Apollinare in Classe.
Magnificent buildings full of history and wisdom in art.
But I’d never thought to go back there for another purpose.

Perhaps art itself is the cause of a certain ferment in inhabitants of Ravenna. They were able to organise an unusual and exciting event!
I’m talking about the first Swap and Reuse Fair, occurred on Saturday 24th April. It was organised by the associations Villaggio Globale, CittAttiva Ravenna – which community mediation service is all over the municipality of Ravenna –, then RicicloOfficina – a project to reuse old bicycles – and Hundertwasser Project.

We were in three and arrived in less than a hour in Ravenna by train. We walked out the railway station to a little park where the event had to occur.
Weather wasn’t so good and all the day an autumnal grey sky with rain put down us and compromised the open spaces for the fair. But the bad weather wasn’t enough to stop visitors that literally invaded the porch under which benches were prepared.

Sapete come funziona il baratto, no?
Do you know how swap works? You give something that don’t use anymore and ask for something in change. There, in particular, the organization involved citizens and students, offering chips to everyone who brought stuff to swap. With these chips you would have “purchased” something in the fair or participated to laboratories prepared by volunteers.

But we went there without anything to swap and the one thing to do was… to look only.
And unhappy we did a tour around the benches, those ones of second hand things (clothes, accessories, toys, books and home tools) and those dedicated to labs and artisans able to create with recycled materials.

I must admit that as regards the concept of swap, we Italians aren’t so prepared. It’s not the first time I see swapping and the quality of things is generally low. Perhaps we don’t get used to the idea that all we give must have the same quality of what we need!
Maybe we still have to think about it.

But all what was around was fantastic!
There were four recycling-art laboratories: one about sewing a fabric owl with wool and buttons, one about the making of the DIY recycled paper, one on the making of a “newspaper bag” with paper, carton and wool, and another one on the customisation of fabric bags.
Here two kind ladies gave us two chips to participate to these labs. Of course I followed the DIY recycled paper! :)

Labs apart, there were some games for kids, realized with recycled materials as tic-tac-toe with rubber circles and wooden crosses or checkers with jars lids and so on.
The “recycling cycle” was completed by the various craftsmen who showed their works made with recycled material and the fact that they only “showed” – and didn’t sell – was admirable.
I can list some: “Ecoarte by Mimo” – who show recycled paper frames, recycled corks jewels and other coloured creations – than “I Poverelli”– jewels made from old tableware –, “Keymera”– who create clothes and accessories from recycled fabrics, especially from jeans –.
Then there was also objects from the South of the world, showed by the association Villaggio Globale: bags from recycled tyres by the Colombian project called Cyclus, the “Fish bags” and the beautiful object made from recycled paper, cut and folded by Mai Handicraft in Vietnam, bags made in recycled paper and gauze by Mcc Prokritee from Bangladesh, and other recycled paper and plastic creations, all from fair trade.

I can’t miss to tell of the existence of Emergency, and other organisations like Legambiente, Educaid, the Italian Forum for Water Movements (collecting signatures for the referendum about the saving of public water) and popular initiatives like “Save the cork” by the cooperative Artimestieri, the famous project “Rifiuto con affetto” and the auction of bicycles saved from students and scouts of Ravenna for the project “RicicloOfficina”. Surely I forgot to say something.

But, apart all these things, due to the train evening timetable, I couldn’t stay at one thing I desired to see: the fashion show of Strazzaecuci, fantastic girls who popped over this blog and have their own blog, where they show to the world all they are able to do with second hand and saved clothes and fabrics. They are geniuses and genial at the same time. We chatted for a while but it was a pity to be unable to see their models live. I hope to have new chances!

To sum up, the last Saturday afternoon from grey became a rainbow of colours and sounds where a lot of people took part.
Surely an experience to multiply!

EARTH DAY 2010

Earth Day 2010
Another "eco-day" celebration. By now there are many days like this. A lot of chances to make little good actions like those ones I listed two days ago
I'm very happy that the hearsay about this is so spread out, as the initiatives that many blogs like this promote.
Two years ago things were so different and you had to connect to the rest of the world to share days like this.
But I fear... I have the impression that this tendence can pass now or then. And obviously I don't wish it.

Per oggi non ho grandi propositi. "Come?" mi direte.
But today I haven't great proposals. "How?" I see you comment. Well, there are many things to do and certainly I'll practise my "eco-decalogue", but one thing in particular impressed me a lot. It was Nora's proposal, from the blog La Felice Stagione
I'll embrace a tree, yes, you heard right. It will be like I always did in parks – I did it hide for fear to look mad – when I lived in the city. I still do it when I trek through the woods.
It's one of the most beautiful experience that nature can give us.
It's like I can feel the lymph to flow inside the trunk. I listen to the sound of winds in the branches, and it's like the spirit of the tree talks to me.

Concedetemi questo momento. Io e la Terra.
Ok, maybe I'll be mad, but I'm not the one. :P
Let me live this moment. Earth and me.

L’“Ecodecalogo” / The "Green Decalogue"

Just a little premise: today is a special day, the birthday of a friend, Miriam, who I recently knew during the meeting with Leo Hickman. Miriam hasn’t a blog but she has numerous interests in common with me like reading, communication, foreign languages and lately… being green!

Well, I want to give her a special gift… nothing material, nothing that consumes energy or resources, nothing polluting. I want simply dedicate her this post that she herself asked me some time ago: a decalogue of habits that someone of us should have constantly in mind in order to have a more sustainable life.

To say the truth I wrote this decalogue to prepare myself to the famous interview. But I had to review it, because even in that occasion I realized that I had neglected lots of things. I must admit that it wasn’t so easy to resume in ten rules what I always do as daily routine. Every action is linked to another and the effects of these actions are many.
Ma vediamole insieme / let’s see them together:

1. Riduci l’usa e getta (usare quindi sportine e tutto quanto possa essere lavato e riutilizzato) / Reduce disposable things (using reusable bags and all the washable things to be reused)

2. Compra prodotti con imballaggio riciclabile (o compostabile o riutilizzabile come i prodotti sfusi e alla spina) / Buy products with recyclable (or compostable or reusable, as bulk products) packaging

3. Bevi acqua del rubinetto (o di fonte pubblica) / Drink tap-water (or take water from a public source)

4. Autoproduci (in cucina) / Make food yourself

5. Ricicla bene (separare i materiali, risciacquare i contenitori, schiacciare le cose ingombranti) / Recycle more and in the best way (separate, rinse and squash packaging)

6. Fai il compostaggio domestico (o raccolta dell’umido) / Compost (or at least collect organic waste separately)

7. Raccogli gli oli esausti (ed altri materiali pericolosi, portandoli all’isola ecologica più vicina) / Collect exhausted oils (and other dangerous materials, taking them at the nearest HWRC)

8. Risparmia acqua ed energia / Save water and energy

9. Riutilizza e compra usato / Reuse and buy second hand things

10. Ripara (prima di buttare) / Repair (before throwing away)

Of course we can focus on each point. Or better still, you are invited to add new suggestions yourself and ask me for more information.

However, I’ve just given to you some advices. Please do not take them as the Decalogue of Bible! LOL
You must prepare slowly to front each action, organising yourself, finding alternatives and solutions. You won’t be castigate if you aren’t able to practise these actions.
It’s especially because they are free that everyone can fit them with his life and amplify according to his willingness. These actions can be make us happy and satisfied, lightening our ecological footprint.

So, Miriam, I hope that you’ll appreciate my gift. Have a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and a very green day! ;)

Carciofini 2010: una nuova avventura tra i fornelli / Small artichokes 2010: a new cooking adventure

After the last news that will hold you in suspense (LOL) we come back to talk about our favourite topics.
One of these regards concern the “self-production”, a topic that often I neglect, to say the truth.
Yes, unlike many of you, – by now you know – I’m not a good cook but sometimes I delight to make a mess in the kitchen. On the contrary my beloved Irish is a great chef indeed!
In facts this time I pass the word to him, who will delight you telling about a day spent in the making of… small artichokes in oil!

“Well, I confess to be a greedy glutton of small artichokes in oil… take away all from me but not my small artichoke!!!
So, knowing of my gluttony, last year my aunt gave us some jars of small artichokes in oil that she made herself. After some months we ate them and thought: ‘We foolish! We go on to buy artichokes in oil at the supermarket, while we can well make them at home!’
So here we are at work now, with some glass jars (sterilized and reused), organic sunflower oil, salt, a cauldron and small artichokes.
Of course we bought small artichokes from our friend Andrea, the “poet greengrocer”, who – since we are in Viserbella – provides us weekly with all kinds of fruit and vegetables, almost all local products, grown by local farmers. We trust blindly in him as in his wife Elena, who gave us her personal recipe we proved…
Let’s start now!
The very difficult work is surely to clean and prepare artichokes. In doing it, we saw that we threw away a lot of leftovers and these were mostly the external harder leaves. However they are edible and so we organized to keep the greatest part of the leaves safe, cooking and freezing them. The other ones were thrown in the compost bin and will provide a good compost for gardening!
After having cleaned artichokes – putting them in water and lemon in the meanwhile – we took water to boil with a tablespoon of salt and a glass of vinegar. Then we immersed them and boil for 10/15 minutes. At the end we drained them and pressed in the jars, covering all with sunflower oil.
Then we closed jars and turned them over to create a vacuum packed jar and preserve better the content.
In all this new experience, with almost 100 small artichokes we obtained more than 4 jars. Unfortunately we had to open soon one of them, because the lid didn’t close well (maybe was it only an excuse? LOL).
They tasted yummy and all the day spent in the kitchen was worth, so to have for the next months small artichokes in oil that surely will be better than the purchased ones!
Now we will store more jars for the next year in order to produce more and have the right quantity to assuage my gluttony!!!”

Yes, at last this is reuse, recycle and money saving too! ;)

Dandaworld on… TV!?!

Forse vi sarete chiesti ultimamente cosa mi è successo.
Perdonatemi.
Maybe you were wondering where did I go all the time. Or not. It’s not the first time I miss blogging for long periods without saying any word.
I’m sorry, I know that I’m loosing my readers and those ones who are still following the blog are loosing every bit of continuity and affection. Please forgive me.
You know that the life of a blog is linked to the available free time and in the last weeks this was so increasingly compressed, until I have the only half-hour free before going bed tired after dinner.
I wonder if I’m the only one!

Anyway I want to tell you something that recalls the title up there on this blog post. Are you curious?

More than a week ago I was in panic, scared by the idea of being in front of a mechanical eye, that one of the camera for a local TV channel, who came in contact with me recently for making me an… interview!
Yes, well, I’m not that kind of girl who wants appear in public, contrary to someone could think, as I have a blog. In facts the reserve is always a character of mine since I was a child and I always blush whenever I’m exposed to public. The blog was a way to partially win my introspective character.
But I couldn’t hope to get away with this!

When the journalist of the TV channel rang me I was in such a situation of mixed surprise and embarrassment… but there and then I felt like I couldn’t refuse to make the interview, especially because the theme was the dearest one for me: the environmental sustainable life!

E mo pedala!”
So I took the courage and accepted this that is such a challenge for myself.
File that under: “As you make your bed, so you must lie in it!”

And I “lied”and the interview was done… even if I still haven’t seen the result yet.
But I had to do a great work of training with myself, not only to make easier the impact with the camera.

Under the suggestion of the interviewer – the same director and writer of the programme – I edited an outline of what I would have to tell, in order to don’t loose the thread or to synthetize in few minutes all my world “seen through a green filter”.
So I collected the most important infos about my lifestyle careful in reusing, recycling and saving resources, focusing on particular actions that I normally do day by day.

What an effort! I had not only to prepare mentally myself for an unforeseen exposure. I had not only to tidy up home for the preparation of the “set”. The main difficulty was to recall quickly all the goal I achieved slowly in more than two years. I didn’t realized that all the moments of my life were modified for reducing my environmental impact.
In facts, I anticipate that the TV broadcast has just that name and I’ll give more details as soon as they’ll give me the news of the broadcast or on-line podcast.

But, apart from the interview itself: all the chaos of this episode caused a new awareness in me.
It is very encouraging that the world of television is approaching to the environmental threads, in particular it is more interested about lifestyle and thoughts of normal people who decided to live in a more conscious way.
From this point of view internet and television together can create a new happier age for the communication, if simply they’ll focus on reality more than fiction.

Quindi, restate sintonizzati! Prossimamente…
So stay tuned! Coming soon…

Buona Pasqua e... Pasquetta!

Ci vediamo prestissimo! ;)

I'm a bit late in joining to all the wishes for the Easter festivities!
I didn't manage to write a special post... days flew away with so few time to write.
But I promise to come back soon, the news to tell you are so many!
So, I hope that you spent a happy Easter, although the weather is not so much good and I hope also that today you will be able to breathe a bit of festivity air more...
See you very soon! ;)
