It's true that our compost must be the last of our worries...
But I try to be careful on all the things I can control. And - exactly like you do - I try to give my little contribution to pollute less, having a greener lifestyle.
So glad I'm not the one! :)
To answer to your worry, I do use my compost for growing vegs, even if I don't have a very big garden to plant so more varieties. Last year I grew cherry tomatoes and strawberries, then I still grow radicchio in big pots. They are very good for me and environment! :)
So, thank you again for your words and encouragement! Go on with your enthusiasm, and see you soon on our blogs! ;)
Hugs

Dandadandaworldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03539992452778511972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101259731030390489.post-23707916328736184422011-01-10T01:28:52.365+01:002011-01-10T01:28:52.365+01:00Hi Danda, thank you for your reply. I think there...Hi Danda, thank you for your reply. I think there is a big difference between letting plastic waste get into oceans where it may harm wildlife and putting some non-biodegradable items in a compost heap where they can be removed at the end of the process.

The only things I have difficulty removing are the particles of glitter, small sparkly bits of plastic put onto birthday and Christmas cards... but I really don't think they do any harm in the soil.

There is a lot more in modern life to worry about. We inhale dioxins from idiots who burn plastic and carbon particles laced with benzene from Diesel cars and lorries. We deliberately increase our carbon footprint with regular 'fashion' purchases, make-up and cosmetics we don't need. We think 'stuff' makes us happy and try to get as much of it as we can. All these ills have a far greater impact on our planet than finding that something won't rot down in our compost heap.

I freely admit that I'm a bit of a composting and low carbon living obsessive, and I know that in the grand scheme of things my individual efforts are pretty meaningless. But I do what I can and hope that others may be inspired to get off the gravy-train and adopt a more ethical lifestyle.

And, to answer your query about whether to use your compost only for ornamentals and flowers, NO! We all need to grow as much of our food in our own gardens ourselves, as bought food is our biggest contributor to carbon emissions, it's fun, and any home grown fresh food is better than stuff imported, stored, overpackaged. And compost is the best way to fertilise the soil, and won't affect your crops in any bad way at all!

Yours happily (sorry for the rant!) JohnCompost Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10270806060748616269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101259731030390489.post-42135265345387775502011-01-09T20:46:09.371+01:002011-01-09T20:46:09.371+01:00Thank you very much John and welcome on my blog!
...Thank you very much John and welcome on my blog!
Glad to hear about yur experience and point of view.
It's a good idea to let degrade things and then throw them away if they don't, but IMHO I scare about the synthetic particles that can go in the natural cyle and then in the food chain. I heard about plastic in the oceans that seem to degrade but really release some little particles that sea creatures eat accidentally...
So, I think it's better to try this experiment in a compost you don't use for growing fruits or vegs but only flowers or ornamental plants. Don't you agree with me?
Anyway it's a very educative experiment!
Thank you again and see you on your blog! ;)dandaworldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03539992452778511972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101259731030390489.post-37166617501879062782011-01-01T21:23:16.653+01:002011-01-01T21:23:16.653+01:00I am keen on composting as much as possible, and m...I am keen on composting as much as possible, and my advice is that if you think it will compost, put it in the compost bin. Because if the material does not biodegrade and rot down, you'll be able to take it out of the compost when the rest of the compost is ready to use on the land.
I compost rubber gloves, condoms, balloons, elastic bands and hot water bottles. Occasionally I've tried to compost a rubber glove which is not natural latex and it has gone through the bin unchanged... i simply pick it out and throw it away. Many rubber things take a long time to rot down... for instance, strips of cut-up hot water bottle took 3 to 4 years to degrade, and I took them out of the first heap and put them in the next, perhaps 3 times before the strip of rubber was really degrading.
Don't worry about the colour, these days it is mostly maize and soya based, therefore biodegradable.
John, York UKCompost Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10270806060748616269noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5101259731030390489.post-49376604710538609572010-11-22T14:05:16.643+01:002010-11-22T14:05:16.643+01:00Dear Layla,
