Settembre, novità, propositi e... / September, news, pledges and...

Che succede? Piove? L’estate sembra finita?
What’s up? Is it raining? Is the summer over?
I know, you’ve lost the enthusiasm and are returning to work – who’s got a job – , out of humour ... And then Danda no longer writes on her blog!
Yes, you’re totally right, but I did not say that ...

Grazie ancora siete meravigliosi!
I started to work at full pace, although for me this is still a trial period. And you know, when there is a job you want at all costs ... well, there is no other commitment that you can take! But obviously I haven’t forgotten you and all your encouraging comments that with a great surprise I found after my first post on London. Thanks again you are wonderful!

Vi spiego come.
However, you must also know that though my free time is less and less, I might be able to find a bit of it. I'm explaining how.

When you work out all day at the computer, sitting fixed at a desk, the desire to stay there again to write a post disappears.
For some time I wished something that would allow me to write away from my desk and maybe even on trains, buses ...
My wish has come true thanks to a sensational – it is, because it not normally ever happens to me – winning at a contest offered by the Italian Post for those who use the pre-paid card for their purchases. At home a few days ago I received a wonderful tablet that, therefore, allows me to be more present on the blog and on various social networks!

Contenti? Io sì! :)
Happy? I do! :)
Well, having said that, come to what I would like to tell you earlier this week.

Staying on the theme with Britain, you know that yesterday the National ZeroWaste Week started, promoted at the forefront from the blog My Zero Waste by Rachel Strauss and her family. It is now five years that, at this time, more and more virtuous British engage themselves in some useful purpose to reduce the production of waste. This year’s theme is “do one thing more.”

E io cosa c’entro?
And what have I to share with them? Yes, it is true that there in London I left my heart and from that day I set foot on British soil, I feel a bit English too. But this was not enough ... some good angel has decided to involve me in this campaign, inviting me through the Facebook page of the event to join them with one of my pledge ...

Mumble mumble ... I thought and thought long about what I could do more to avoid waste that can't be recycled in some way. Anyone who knows me since a long time, knows that I already practice home composting, recycle as much as possible, buy stuff on tap or in bulk, avoiding excessive packaging, use reusable containers and bags and produce a lot of things at home (yogurt, dough for pizzas and pies, and in some periods, even the bread). In addition, some corners of my home are dedicated to the temporary storage of objects, packaging and other not-recyclable things, waiting to be creatively converted to a new use.

So, what to do this week? A new challenge to zero waste? Try to reuse leftovers of food and minimize waste? Reconsider some consumptions and try to find alternatives? How to improve waste reduction more?

I could not find an original idea ... so it will be a “work in progress” week. Whatever will be made and designed in order to avoid to waste, trying to post ideas and suggestions on Twitter and Facebook for the occasion, tablet in hand! ;)

Intanto voglio svelarvi chi mi ha invitato a prendere parte all’iniziativa:
Meanwhile I want to reveal you who invited me to take part in the initiative:

Almost Mrs Average and me @ the perfect location! ;)

Ta-daaaaaa!!!
Ta-daaaaaa!
Yes, yes, it is she, Almost Mrs Average, aka Karen Kannard, the wonderful well-known blogger in Suffolk, I met in London and I know virtually at least since six years, during which I have written and commented on her blog “The Rubbish Diet”. A strange name for a blog that has intrigued and fascinated me from the first moment and that prompted me to write in two languages on my blog, just to share our intent.

Karen has always been friendly and has always shown attentive to the problems caused by our own waste management. In person she was surprisingly affectionate, for you would have mistaken her for a real Italian, and when we met in London, we recognized ourselves from a distance and we hugged like we were dear old friends for years! We then walked and chatted for hours – yes, about waste but most about our lives –, in a beautiful and unusual sun in London.
It’s great to know that a friendship can be born even not knowing the person and can be strengthened through a sincere communication, albeit in a virtual form. Just be who you are and Karen is a wonderful person, I had no doubt! A formidable mother, busy on all fronts, interested in many things, creative, cheerful and generous!

Vi racconterò dove siamo state. Vero Karen? ;)
I’ll tell you where we were. A place that not all those who were in London know. In the meantime, pop on her blog and read what she’s up this week in her kitchen overrun with dishes and unused appliances. Sure she has clear ideas and she is always a great inspiration. Come on, a little effort with English is good for us. Isn’t it, Karen? ;)

“Where’s Danda?” (parte prima / part one)

Where's Danda?
I guess you’ll ask yourselves several times throughout the summer. Well I was usually here, behind this monitor, except for five wonderful days spent precisely in what this summer was “the navel of the world” ... precise, London

@ London!!!
I would have liked to be there for the Olympics, but to avoid the exorbitant prices, I and my companion took advantage of a good offer by one of our dear friend, who’s a tour operator. Then we flew during the first days of July, breathing the same so very special air of the preparations for the games, mixed with the charm –hitherto unknown to me– of that strange and eventful northern European city.

Yes, I had never been in London and, when I admit it, all they responded with a surprised face “no, you absolutely must go!”
“Ok, when I can,” I replied, but like all things you want to do so, and you never know where to start or what resources to bring out, this desire remained closed into the drawer. Until one day I received a suspicious phone call ... that’s my friend asking me details on how to organize the trip ... and I “what a journey?” And so Paolo (aka Irish, for those who already read about him in this blog), was forced to reveal to me the wonderful surprise that was his gift for our sixteenth anniversary!

From there I began to fantasize, stopping, however, to pull out of the hat of my computer a particular map of London, the ‘Green London’, which I had saved during one of my wanderings on the web. But the goal has always intrigued me a lot ...
Unfortunately I was taken from the confusion of my work situation (or rather non-working), suspended between sending resumes, job search, unnecessary bureaucracy, and things like that, all that kept me away from the blog until now.

Paolo, fortunately been in the much coveted-for-me London, began at once to get caught by the organization. Pull out all the museum guides already in his possession, the number of clippings from travel magazines, a guide with a map (a bit more detailed than mine) and some other guides remedied at the charity-shop or annexed to the newspapers, he studied every night and weekends available. Every time I threw one eye, while he took notes.

But when we had only two weeks until departure, we forced ourselves to remain in the evening after dinner to the table studying in detail our movements. We got a notebook –recycled paper, received for free at the cooking class attended at ‘Do The Right Thing’ 2011–, a little small post-it notes, a pen and started marking on the map, classified by colour, first of all museums, monuments and milestones that are marked mandatory in all the guidebooks, those ones that everybody already supposed to know, thanks to photos in the English school books. Then the places of entertainment: famous pubs, restaurants for our pockets and our needs, embarking points for tours by boat, markets, music shops, parks and other places of entertainment. It seemed an eternity we were staying, for how many points we marked! But it was all strictly determined by taking schedules and travel times, apparently.

Grazie ancora Maria!
I do not forget to say that first of all I had glanced at Carmine's blog, “Turismo Lento” and had requested guidance from the gentle Maria, blogger of “The Indie Handmade Show”, who lives in London, lucky her, and suggested to visit some parks, neighbourhoods and markets as well as what she calls the ‘must see’. I was able to view only a part of them, but I’m really glad I had all these suggestions, which is not easy to find guides on the classic. Thanks so much again Maria!

In short, prepared the map, our travel diary and of course our luggage with all the documentation, we found ourselves in less than no time to fly the English Channel, from a boiling Italy, landing under a layer of gray clouds that hid the bright green of the countryside around Gatwick.
And what could we expect? Besides, everyone says that it always rains in London! But we were happy to be left behind the nearly 40 ° C of Italy!

This story is long enough.
Let me be clear, I have just the slightest intention to bore you with yet another tale of travel, such as those you can read on newsstand magazines or you can see in some television programs.
But I really have many fancy things to say, things that you’ll not read elsewhere, and that perhaps only Danda, with her ‘green’ point of view can see.
And then in London, I finally met someone very special ... you don’t want to disclose it now!
I know that slowly you’ll come back to read this blog! I’ll await you! ;)

Coming back soon...

Hey, are you there? Do not tell me you're all on holiday!
Yes, I'm here, even if it seems I'm on holiday. I'm very busy and this is precisely why I do not update the blog since May.
Then I will explain. I have many, many things to tell you! I need a moment to organize ideas.
Meanwhile, I suggest you take a look at my old posts.
My blog looks back five years of publication, therefore, I suggest to those who are facing here just now to scroll through the list of my old posts and find some interesting titles, or go look at tags still on the right bar. You might find something useful and environmentally friendly for this summer, a suggestion for a weekend to organize last minute, one for the autumn approaching, or a suggestion for a nice reading...
In this way you will keep tuned with Dandaworld... So see you soon and have a happy Mid-August, since it's coming! ;)
