It’s urgent to do the ritual gesture before falling in temptation: to throw last rubbish bag and restart to walk on the Zero Waste way!

L’ultimo sacchetto davanti alla nostra compostiera. / Our last bag near our composter.

Ma voi lo vedete quel sacchetto lì? Sì sì è lui! Il sacchetto dei rifiuti indifferenziati inaugurato alla fine dell’ultimo giorno della precedente settimana a Rifiuti Zero. È ancora lui e pesa 310 g. Sono passate tre settimane! Mezzo etto in media di spazzatura per persona a settimana. Che dite, non è un buon segno? Vuol dire che quella famosa settimana è stata molto proficua!
And can you see that bag? Yes, it is really it! The rubbish bag we started at the end of the last Zero Waste Week day. It is really it and it weighs 310 g. Three weeks are passed! A half-hectogram of rubbish a week per person. What do you think about? A good result, isn’t it? It means that the week was really good!

Ve lo dico subito, anch’io ho i miei limiti!
Conosco abbastanza bene i materiali più comuni e i processi di riciclo (fa anche parte dei miei passati studi). Ma districarsi nella giungla italiana dei servizi offerti al cittadino per la raccolta dei rifiuti è una bella gatta da pelare. Come voi ben sapete, ogni comune ha i suoi metodi, le sue regole e persino i colori dei cassonetti diversi! Purtroppo da questo punto di vista non si può dare una risposta univoca ai dubbi insorti, e ognuno di noi dovrà comunque verificare le possibilità a disposizione nel luogo dove abita.

I say you in advance: I have my limits too!
I know well common materials and recycle process (due also to my previous studies). But getting out of the jungle of Italian services for waste collection is a difficult task. As you well know, every municipality has its methods, its rules, as also its different colours for bins! Unfortunately from this point of view, I can’t say an unambiguous answer to your doubts and everyone will have to verify local facilities.

Credo che l’idea di MisterCrama sia veramente azzeccata. Fra l’altro, volevo aggiungere, che mi ha fatto un bel regalo proprio a rifiuti zero: grazie alla sua lungimiranza, da qualche giorno potete arrivare al Dandaworld blog anche attraverso il dominio www.dandaworld.it.
Questo potrebbe essere l’inizio di una serie di cambiamenti che a poco a poco riguarderanno il blog. Buona settimana a tutti! Oggi mi va di canticchiare! Perché?

Avrei dovuto scriverlo sabato, non stavo nella pelle ed ora non ce la faccio più a tenerlo, voglio raccontarvelo a tutti i costi! Ma procediamo con ordine…

Good week everybody! Today I’m singing… and why?

I had to write it last Saturday, but I was beside myself and now I can’t keep it anymore, I must tell you at any cost! But let’s start in order…

La scorsa settimana è cominciata con una visita alla famosa fiera di San Martino a Santarcangelo di Romagna, restata aperta fino a mercoledì 11. Siamo usciti di sera con un freddino niente male e con l’idea di acquistare alcuni prodotti (spezie, olive, funghi, formaggi, castagne…) che, nel grande mercato gastronomico della festa, si trovano sfusi. Siamo tornati abbastanza presto, però, per via della chiusura anticipata infrasettimanale dei banchi. Abbiamo fatto solo un piccolo bottino di formaggi biologici e un paio di vasetti di marmellata. Apprezzato dai venditori ambulanti è stato il nostro gesto di rinunciare alle loro buste di plastica in favore delle sportine di tela. Questo è già degno di nota!
Last week began with a visit to the famous fair of St. Martin in Santarcangelo of Romagna, lasted long until Wednesday 11th. We went out in the evening with a quietly cold weather and with the idea to buy some bulk products, you can find in the great gastronomic market of the fair (i.e. spices, olives, mushrooms, cheeses, chestnuts…). But we came back home early, due to the early midweek closure of stalls. We bought only some organic cheeses, and a pair of two jam jars. Our gesture of renouncing to plastic shopping bags, behalf our cotton ones, was very appreciated from the sellers. And this was a great thing yet to start!

Ma quella serata mi è costata un brutto raffreddore che mi sono portata dietro per tutta la settimana. Durante le altre serate, quindi, sono rimasta a casa, suscitando un po’ le preoccupazioni di tutti per il mio malessere. Questa dannata influenza A sta mietendo più panico che vittime! Anche un semplice raffreddore passa così per sindrome influenzale… sono allibita per come la tv stia condizionando le nostre menti ingenue! Mah, spero proprio che questo periodo passi!
But that evening was bad to me, because I had a cold lasting long all the week. So, during the other evenings I remained at home, arousing concern among friends and relatives for my health. This damn flu (the A type) is reaping more panic than victims! If you have a simple cold, you mustn’t have flu too… I am astounded as the tv is influencing our naïve minds! Nevermind, I really hope that this period will pass soon!

A parte questo, non ho potuto trascurare le cose obbligatorie da fare nel weekend in ogni caso, tra cui la solita spesa. Dopo la settimana a zero rifiuti, però, la spesa non poteva essere esattamente la “solita”! C’era un passo nuovo da fare. Qualcosa di tanto sospirato…
Andare a comprare con il proprio contenitore!!!
These things apart, I couldn’t neglect some binding things to do in the weekend, as the usual shopping. But after our Zero Waste Week, it couldn’t be exactly the same ‘usual’ shopping! There was a new step to do. Something I strongly wished…
Go shopping with my own container!!!

Non abbiamo scelto il solito e caotico supermercato come obiettivo per la nostra buona intenzione, ma, dal momento che volevamo acquistare dei semplici latticini, da utilizzare nella pizza o come secondo, abbiamo deciso di recarci ad un caseificio della città. Qui avremmo sicuramente trovato i latticini sfusi, senza imballaggio e la nostra richiesta sarebbe stata, quindi, più giustificata.
We didn’t choose the usual and chaotic supermarket for our good proposal, but given that we wanted to buy only simple dairy products, as ingredients for pizza or as main course, we decided to go to a cheese shop in the city. There we would have found bulk dairy products without packaging and our request would have been more justified.

“Armati” di contenitore con coperchio – che può essere un classico Tupperware, o un altrettanto Gio' Style come il nostro –, di dimensioni adeguate da poter contenere almeno un paio di mozzarelle grandi, siamo entrati nel negozio poco affollato, vista l’ora tarda. E dopo aver aspettato pazientemente il nostro turno, studiandoci tutti i prodotti in vendita – era la nostra prima visita al negozio – è toccato a me chiedere timidamente alla commessa, mostrando il contenitore: “Possiamo darle il nostro contenitore per mettere le mozzarelle”?
E la commessa, senza guardarmi male, senza fare strani sorrisi, mi ha risposto con un gentilissimo “Sì, certamente! L’importante è che sia abbastanza capiente… più che altro per l’acqua”!
Già, le mozzarelle, specialmente quelle di bufala, hanno bisogno di stare nel loro siero. Per fortuna ci avevo già pensato ed avevo portato con me anche una borsa termica per riporre il contenitore.
Ed eccolo, il nostro contenitore con le due buonissime mozzarelle di bufala arrivate a casa sane e salve, risparmiando un’odiosissima busta di plastica! Iuhuuuu!!!
‘Armed’ with container and lid – it can be a simple Tupperware or a Gio' Style as our –, of appropriate dimensions to contain almost a pair of big mozzarellas, we came in the shop where we found few people due to the late hour. And after waited our turn, studying all the products – it was the first time we visited the shop – it was my turn to shyly ask to the seller, showing my box: “Can I give you my container to put mozzarellas, please”?
And she – not looking at me badly and not smiling me in a sarcastic way – gently said: “Yes, of course! Be only careful that it has right dimensions… for water more than anything”!
Of course mozzarellas, especially buffalo’s ones, had to stay in their whey. I was lucky to think on it before and I brought with me also a cool bag to take the box in.
And here it is our container with the two very good buffalo mozzarellas, arrived home safe. And I saved also another plastic bag! Yay!

Come sempre quando si fa una cosa logica che prima si ha sempre avuto paura o vergogna di fare, dopo mi sono chiesta: “Perché diavolo non l’ho mai fatto prima”?
È stato semplice come bere un sorso d’acqua e non mi è costato niente, semplicemente un po’ di rossore sulle guance, ma a questo ci sono abituata! :)
As it happens when you do something logic that you had fear or embarrassment to do it before, after that I wonder: “Why the hell didn’t I do it before”?
It was easy like to drink a glass of water, and it didn’t cost me nothing apart a bit of usual flush on my cheeks! :)

Prossimo obiettivo, ora? Beh una cosa che invece non abbiamo potuto evitare. Acquistare questi prodotti sfusi, lenticchie, ceci, zuppa, noci, con i nostri contenitori. Abbiamo trovato un negozio con una vasta scelta di alimenti secchi sfusi, ma non ci siamo sufficientemente attrezzati per evitare di farceli imbustare. Questa volta riuseremo i sacchetti, ma la prossima volta…
Ormai non ci ferma più nessuno!
Next target now? Well, the thing we wasn’t able to avoid. To buy these bulk products (lentils, chickpeas, cereals and pulses for soups, walnuts), with our containers. We found a shop with a great variety of bulk dried foods, but we weren’t enough equipped to avoid packaging. This time we will reuse the plastic bags, but next time…
Nothing’s going to stop us now!

Dolce è… riciclare! / Sweet is… recycling!

Dopo tutti questi giorni l’interesse sul riciclabile o no si è davvero acceso. Allora proviamo a parlarne! Chi lo sa se una cosa si può riciclare? Tempo fa avevo cominciato a scrivere una serie di post sulla simbologia del packaging che vorrei riprendere. Però ci sono argomenti tirati in ballo che esigono risposte urgenti. Come per esempio i dubbi di Lo.

After all these days ‘to be recyclable or not’ has become a heated debate. So let’s try to talk about it! Who knows what is recyclable? Some time ago I started to write a series of posts on the symbols of packaging, and I want to continue. But there are some issues that were involved in discussion and need urgent answers. As for example Lo’s dubts.

Lo è una persona fantastica che scrive sul blog Galline 2nd Life. Vi avevo già accennato della sua visita qui nella mia città. Sul suo blog affollatissimo (lei lo chiama affettuosamente “il pollaio”) trovi ricette creative e appetitose che scrive di sua mano o che rielabora con un tocco del tutto personale, sperimentandole in famiglia. Una famiglia molto speciale con un compagno attentissimo ad ottimizzare i consumi e una bellissima bambina, la “Gnoma”, che ha già talento e fantasia e, secondo me ha già capito tutto della vita! :)
Ma la cosa più bella è che Lo riversa nelle pagine del suo blog i suoi più reconditi stati d’animo che rendono ogni post un racconto, a volte molto introspettivo ma sempre piacevole. E le ricette che seguono spesso sembrano quasi essere ispirate dal racconto.
Non voglio dilungarmi in adulazioni di sorta. Io dico solo che il giorno che ho incontrato queste persone mi è sembrato di conoscerle da tanto tempo. Una sensazione che mi capita solo con le persone sintonizzate sulla mia stessa onda.
Come ho reagito quando mi hanno raccontato che si rifornivano dai produttori locali per gli alimenti e che addirittura Lo usa portare il suo contenitore dalla “contadina” per rifornirsi di formaggi e prodotti freschi? Potete solo immaginare dentro di me un’esplosione di gioia! Evviva! È la prima persona italiana che ho conosciuto che lo fa!
Lo is a fantastic woman who writes on her blog Galline 2nd Life. I’ve already told here on her visit to my city. On her crowded blog (she affectionately calls it ‘the hen house’) you can find creative and appetizing recipes she writes on herself or re-elaborates with a real personal touch, experimenting them with her family. A very special family with a husband very careful on energy consumes and a beautiful girl, the ‘Gnome’, who already has talent and imagination, and, in my opinion, has already learned all from life! :)
But the coolest thing is that in her blog pages, Lo tells about her deepest climates. Every article is a story, sometimes very introspective but pleasant the same. And recipes often seem to be inspired from stories.
I don’t want to dwell on some flatteries, but I say that the day I met these people I had the impression that I already knew them. A rare sensation I prove only with people who are tuned on my waves.
Could you imagine how I reacted when they said to me that they go shopping from local farmers? And about Lo that go to by cheese and dairy products in her own container from a farmer? I had an explosion of joy inside! Hurray! The first Italian person that do it!

I 'biscotti del pescatore' fatti da Irish

Il giorno del mio compleanno Lo mi ha fatto un regalo a dir poco squisito – l’unico regalo finora ricevuto ad eccezione del biglietto della lotteria che mi ha mandato la mia mamma –, per me a rifiuti zero! :) Squisito nel pensiero e squisito di fatto: ha preparato i “biscotti del pescatore”, dolci più o meno locali che io stessa le regalai in una scatola di latta con l’immagine di un pollaio. :D Solo che i miei erano comprati al panificio locale. Le erano piaciuti talmente tanto che voleva la ricetta, e io, non essendo molto esperta, ho chiesto a mia volta aiuto a Cristella, bravissima cuoca, scrittrice e blogger a me vicina.
Ieri Lo ha riportato la sua ricetta dei “biscotti del pescatore” e parla di me e Irish, con parole molto molto belle!
The day of my birthday Lo made a gift for me very exquisite to say the least – the only present I had until now except the lottery ticket sent from my mother – at zero waste! It was exquisite not only as idea: she made the ‘fisherman’s cookies’ – a type of local cookies – that I gave her as a present in a tin box with the image of a hen house. :D But I bought those ones in a bakery. She liked so to ask me the recipe. I hadn’t none and not being very able to cook I asked to my nearest friend Cristella who is a very clever cook, writer and blogger.
Yesterday Lo reported her own recipe for the ‘fisherman’s cookies’ and talked about me and Irish, with beautiful words!

Allora come non correre in suo aiuto quando mi chiede della riciclabilità della “carta da forno” e del silicone come materiale antiaderente per la cottura in forno?
Lo, non disperare!
Then, how not to help her when she asked me about the possibility to recycle greaseproof paper and silicon as non-stick material to ccok in the oven?
Lo, don’t despair, please!

La carta da forno non è riciclabile, spero che la maggior parte di voi lo sappia. Non si può riciclare con la carta poiché dopo essere stata usata è sporca. E la carta sporca non si ricicla se non nell’umido, per chi ha la raccolta nel proprio comune. Invece quel tipo di carta “infernale” non si può nemmeno riciclare nell’umido, probabilmente per le sue componenti. Pur essendo carta alimentare, non sono riuscita a trovare informazioni sulla sua composizione, ma molte aziende municipalizzate la escludono dalla raccolta differenziata.
Greaseproof paper isn’t recyclable, I hope that most of you already know it. It can’t be recycled with paper because after use it is dirt. And dirt paper can be recycled only with humid waste, for those who has this facility in their city. On the contrary, that ‘hellish’ kind of paper can’t be either recycled with humid waste, perhaps due to its components. Even if it is paper for food, I wasn’t able to find infos about its composition, but may waste companies exclude it from recycle facilities.

Irish all'opera... niente carta da forno, ma una leggera imburrata e via!

Quindi che fare? O tornare al vecchio sistema di “imburrare e infarinare” o trovare delle alternative. E queste ci sono! Guardate questo link e questo. Non voglio fare pubblicità ad una marca piuttosto che ad un’altra. Però a quanto pare qualcuno si sta muovendo nella direzione giusta! Esiste quindi la carta da forno riciclabile e compostabile ed è anche alla portata di tutti!

So what to do? You can turn back to the old way to “butter and flour” or you can find alternatives.

So here they are! So give a look here and there. I don’t want to promote a brand rather than another. But it seems that someone is going on the right way! So the recyclable and compostable greaseproof paper exists and it is accessible to all!

Discorso a parte sono i “fogli” di silicone (o anche gli stampi) che si potrebbero utilizzare in sostituzione della carta. Il silicone per uso alimentare, leggo qui e qui, è riciclabile, ma mi domando… è riciclato? Molte delle società di raccolta dei rifiuti nella plastica non accettano nemmeno tutti quegli oggetti che sono contrassegnati col simbolo di “riciclabile” solo perché non classificabili come imballaggi. Se, quindi, la durata quasi eterna del silicone può essere a vantaggio nel discorso di preservazione delle risorse, questa caratteristica ci potrebbe tornare indietro come boomerang nel caso di dismissione a causa magari della “rottura” accidentale del supporto o di un suo effettivo consumo.
A speech apart it is needed for the ‘silicon foils’ (or rather the moulds) to be used in place of paper.
The silicon for food use, I read here and there, is recyclable, but I wonder… is it recycled? Many waste companies do not accept lots of objects marked with the ‘Recyclable’ symbol, with the pretext that they aren’t classified as packaging. So, if the eternal life of the silicon can be good for preserving resources, this feature could come back as a boomerang in the case you have to throw it for being accidentally damaged or an effective wear.

Quindi, non so voi come la pensate. Aiutiamo la Lo a sciogliere il suo dubbio che ormai è diventato un po’ anche il mio, dal momento che non uso più la carta da forno, ma trovata un’alternativa, quasi quasi tornerei ad usarla pur di non lavare una teglia o una tortiera imburrata! :)
Scherzo, ovviamente, anche se la vita di tutti i giorni non è sempre così rilassante! Zero rifiuti è anche questo, capire cosa è possibile e cosa non è possibile fare nella propria esperienza quotidiana e non essere così integralisti. In fondo c’è sempre una via di mezzo… sostenibile!
So, I wonder to know what do you think about it. Let’s help Lo to solve her doubt. This doubt it became mine too, since I found this alternative, seeing that I haven’t used greaseproof paper anymore. I’d like to use it again just to not wash a baking buttered tin! :)
I’m joking. of course, even if everyday life is not always so relaxing! Zero waste is also this, to understand what is possible or not in you own experience, without being to strict.
After all there is always a half way… and it’s sustainable!

Una strada piena di trappole / A way full of traps

Mi sono assentata per qualche giorno. Sì, non ero proprio abituata a scrivere per quasi un’intera settimana di seguito, cercando contemporaneamente di rispondere ai commenti, alle mail e ai messaggi su Facebook! Ho voluto riprenderete fiato per un po’ anche per decidere su cosa concentrarmi appena dopo la nostra Settimana a Zero Rifiuti.
I went away for a while. Yes, I wasn’t used to write for an entire week in succession, trying to reply to comments, emails and messages on Facebook at the same time! I wanted to breathe again even to decide on what to concentrate after our Zero Waste Week.

Alla fine sono rimasta soddisfatta non solo per il risultato, ma per l’eco che ha avuto e soprattutto per l’influenza sulle nostre abitudini quotidiane.
In fondo pensavo che saremmo ritornati alla totale normalità e invece la cosa si è fatta sempre più intrigante, perché molte cose che prima utilizzavamo normalmente, adesso diventano oggetto di interrogazioni. Il livello di guardia si è innalzato. E non ci va in fin dei conti di tornare a fare rifiuti. Se abbiamo le alternative perché fare un passo indietro?
At last I was very satisfied, not only for the result, but also for the echo the challenge had ad for the influence on our daily habits.

Tuttavia nella nostra casa ci sono ancora troppe cose acquistate in precedenza con involucri sospetti e non riciclabili. E ogni tanto capita di dover usarne qualcuna. Così qualcosa ancora finisce nell’odiato piccolo comparto del bidone.

Abbiamo visto anche come un’apparente innocua bustina di lievito per dolci possa essere la causa di un annunciato disastro. O, per esempio, una vecchia spugna biodegradabile troppo colorata arrivata a fine vita, o la già discussa polvere, cose che non butterei nel compost così serenamente. E ancora le linguette “apri e chiudi” dei pacchi di fazzolettini. Prima di rovinarle le riutilizzo per chiudere altri involucri di prodotti già aperti, ma se poi sono troppe? Queste le poche cose che da quella settimana son finite nella pattumiera. Insomma, il sentiero verso l’azzeramento dei rifiuti è pieno di piccoli trabocchetti insidiosi!

And again the small flaps that close the tissues packets. I reuse them to close other packs before they’re damaged, but then I had too much flaps around. Those are the few things that are still in the bin from that week. So, the way to zero waste is full of insidious traps!

Comunque la nostra vita non è diventata più complicata e il nostro tempo non si è dilatato, come qualcuno pensa! Tutto si fa in maniera normale, ma solo un po’ più consapevolmente. In un certo senso è anche più divertente! Irish nel frattempo è diventato quasi più rigoroso di me! Io vi invito davvero a provarci, anche per un solo giorno!
