Grazie!!!
Ora lascio la parola ad Alessia:
Here we are, telling the second part of the story of the newlywed and happy Alessia and Carlo, to which I don't miss to wish a lot of happyness forever!
And I want to dedicate this second and last post on weddings to Gabry, my dear colleague who is getting married with Hichem this Thursday, choosing to donate money for ‘confetti’ to a no-profit association, Emergency. Congratulations! I wish you a wonderful life together, full of beautiful things and surrounded by the love of your beloved persons!
I will not be long more with the premise but I just want to thank all of you that read, commented, linked and re-blogged the previous post, especially VivereVerde who made me know to most of her readers! Thank you so much!
Now I let Alessia speak:

We didn’t do the wedding list, we asked to our relatives and friends the usual “envelope”, explaining that what we collected would have covered a little part of our purchases and the rest:
• thanks to our friend Joussef (who collaborate with Educaid) part of money will contribute to the rebuilding in Palestine.
• thanks to Manitese part of money will be devolved to a project sustained from the association in Burkina Faso.
• thanks to Don Claudio part of money will finance a fair kind of credit.

In the hall we hang some posters to explain why we chose fresh foods, no plastic, the importance to reduce the trade of goods, the importance to consume water on the tap but also to learn in giving more value to what you do and not what you have. We also said that happiness doesn’t come from what we purchase and consume (which makes grow the waste of resources, rubbish and also social injustices).

Mahatma Gandhi

On posters we also quoted two sentences we like very much:
“He is richer who is content with the least” H.D. Toureau
“There is much enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s avidity” Mahatma Ghandi

Oltre all’intento “educativo” ci siamo concessi anche qualche creatività gratuita:
Beyond the educational intent there was also the creative one:

• We did a little exposition on the walls of the hall hanging a ten of landscape photos taken in Ireland by Carlo.

• Moreover, seeing that the spaces offered by the parish weren’t so scenographic, we created a photographic set: a simple sheet designed by me (with the enlarged drawings of the children of the Aquilone association) hanged on the stage and lightened from the parish theatre lights.

• We are really fond of photography, so we liked the idea that this aspect of our life would not have been neglect. So we assured to have “good shots”, thanks to two friends who are photographer, but I ensure that, even without professional photographers, until a month before the wedding day you are buried with pictures by the unfailing cameras of hosts, with enough material for filling two albums.

• For cars: I took the Lambretta (old Italian scooter n.d.t) and Carlo came with a old borrowed wolkwagen coach, decorating it with flowers and rainbows in paper… very hippy!

If these things are not enough I can reveal some little ideas more we didn’t be able to realize:

• I would have been happy to purchase the wedding dress I saw at the second-hand market. Carlo wanted the same for himself. We wanted something vintage, but we had to negotiate with our parents who wanted a more traditional wedding. They bit the bullet of the aperitif in the parish hall, so we renounced to the second-hand dresses. But it could be a good thing to do!
Another option could be to rent dresses.

As regards the flower decorations I wanted to decorate the church myself. I thought about little primrose plants to distribute all around and ivy on the pews but I wasn’t able to organize, so I asked to a florist only the bouquet and the decorations for the altar and the first pews (neither flower at the buttonhole, on cars nor flower clouds of which nobody notice and the day after are waste)… Yes, the look could seem a bit poor but does anyone care?

• As regards photos at first we thought to give some cameras to guests but the hall was too dark and with the flashes of those cameras we would have been at risk to have pictures of relatives and friends with a pale look and red eyes like rabbits.

Ultimo consiglio:
Last suggestion:

When you go in every kind of shop to purchase anything, in example nylons, bras, flowers or every kind of stuff, don’t absolutely say that you are getting married… I wonder why sellers think that for the wedding day you want to pay more than the real value of purchases.

E vissero tutti felici e contenti…
And lived happily ever after…

At the end everybody were really satisfied, even the more sceptics, because they eat the best (unfortunately is the first thing) and they understood that we wanted to offer them more and invite them to share things we feel cordial. It would be great if they can feel these things important too. But something has happened because even in the following days they asked us more infos, which we were happy to give… it was a great success!

I hope that among these chats there’s something useful, but if you need some infos or ideas more you can write to bi_alessia@virgilio.it and I will be happy to help you.

Ciauuuuu!
Seeee you!

Cosa aggiungere?
What to add? The enthusiasm in publishing this post was big as much as big was my surprise to see that this new way to organize wedding celebration was appreciated… it is the sign that we are on the right way to change a bit the world! Don’t you see?

"Un amore sostenibile" #1 / "A sustainable love" #1

Eccomi.
Hi everybody. Time has passed in silence and lots of changes happened. I’ve plenty of things to tell but I prefer talking about… love!

Another couple of weeks and we’ll be in summer, the season in which people fall in love (he he, I know it well) and celebrate weddings. Who wasn’t at least invited at a wedding celebration in summer?

If you are native from the south of Italy as me, you know well what does it mean to marry or to be invited at a wedding party. I see your faces painted with discouragement or rather delirious expressions, thinking to very long celebrations, wastage and squandering of money in all senses! But why a so beautiful moment has to be ruined by so absurd circumstances?

So it is not a case I’m going talking about weddings. He no, don’t worry, it’s not about me, still not!
I take the advantage of the beginning of the nice season to talk about a very special wedding, so unusual and… sustainable one too!
Not me, but the bride in person herself will tell you! I need just a pair of posts to blurt out the story – I don’t want to forget any detail – but I suggest to follow them, because it’s something very special, as the couple that decided to celebrate their love in this way.

Well, I leave you to the account of these fantastic newlywed Alessia and Carlo, to which we wish from heart a wonderful life!

Carlo and me try to live without waste, polluting less possible, choosing in a critical way what to put in the shopping trolley... don't misunderstand us, we aren't saints, sometimes tiredness or haste gain the upper hand, so we take the car or rather the bike and we do a longer bath instead of shower.

In our peaceful dinners without TV, we often ask to ourselves what we can do to make people aware about environmental and social impact due to daily actions. Talking often with friends – people we respect, not criminals! – we realize that they don’t recycle, and don’t worry about waste and about their snacks, who sells them and what are their ingredients. Maybe, we thought, we can start from them…

When we decided to merry, we naturally thought to use the attention, which we inevitably would have attracted, to make people focus on some concepts in order to demonstrate them that everybody can do something. So the wedding party became an occasion for making aware and promote a sober lifestyle.

Is there someone almost insane to do the same?

Well, I want to give you an aid and some address, because, if it’s true that Carlo and me totally enjoy to organise everything, it is as much true that we had to do lots of searches to find the right “suppliers”.

We got married the 18th April 2009 in the church of St. Margherita in Bellaria (province of Rimini) and for celebrating we planned an informal aperitif in the parish theatre: a 0 Km WEDDING PARTY!

Let’s start talking about announcements – only for those people we couldn’t invite by phone –. I simply bought A4 paper sheets, a nice type, then I cut and wrote them by hand, decorating with a simple drawing, and sent in a envelope.

The buffet was prepared with organic, fresh and local products, homemade pasta and bread, all very well cooked by the girls of the catering service “Laratatuia” (for contacts look for Nadia or Simona to their website).

Dishes were in cellulose and cups were in PLA. Both materials are biodegradable and compostable (the day after the wedding day we filled the brown bins around our house!!!). We order this stuff on the internet, paying it by transfer (without the need of VAT number). By Ditta Amore Raffaele.

We proposed to the hosts water on the tap, presented with a customized tag – designed by ourselves – which showed all the benefits of the so called “San Rubinetto” water. There was also mineral water but rigorously in glass bottles and from the local source Galvanina. There were also other drinks in glass bottles but no Coke or Pepsi, and no other multinational company.

We bought sugared almonds (as in the Italian wedding tradition n.d.t.) in one of the fair-trade shops.

The wedding keep-sakes were made of a cotton sachet (a sort of little shopping bag) decorated with drawings by the children of the daily childhood centre “L’Aquilone” in Santa Giustina.
In the sachet there was the booklet “The fair and sober life” edited from the Gocce di Giustizia movement. For further infos I invite you to see their website, among their publications there is also one about the critic consumption.

To promote reuse we thought to prepare a second hand market with the help of the girls of Manitese. I liked the idea to give a new life to plenty of wedding keep-sakes or other objects that you usually can find to the little market where I am occasionally volunteer. So, to each wedding keep-sake I attached a number which corresponded to a second hand object that the host could collect from a meal to another one – Manitese has a second hand shops at Circonvallazione occidentale, n.28 in Rimini, ph. 0541 785305. To know something more about click on Manitese see the website, but if you want to do something real, Manitese is always searching for volunteers –.”

Continua / To be continued

Chi la fa l’aspetti! / What goes around, comes around!

Last week, my dearest friend Valeria, author of “Sulla Rotta di Maqroll El Gaviero’s Blog”, dedicated to me a huge space among her pages, inviting me to talk about you can live in a green and sustainable way with no too much work and a lighter spirit.
I was delighted to accept her invite and wrote a post. Some days ago I read again those words and saw that I forgot too much details – perhaps it was better, because otherwise I would have occupied too much space in her blog –, but the feeling I have now is that I’m not perfect even more… how much things I would do to improve my lifestyle!

So, let’s talk about Valeria… a woman whose thin appearance hides a strong and great mind! I well know her because we worked together for a while… but our friendship was strangely more strong since I’ve moved away. So, writing mails I knew better her opinions and I pressed her on writing her own blog, encouraging her to give more freedom to her thoughts and share them with other new people.

And she accepted my suggestion! She began a voyage on the footprints of a imaginary traveller, an ‘homeless’, the main character of most of the novels by Alvaro Mutis, a Latin American writer…
The voyage is a real inspiration for Valeria. It is not a simple peregrinating, discovering new lands, cultures and traditions, but is the inner voyage of who – as Maqroll do – “decides to front the adventure of his own life, free from social constriction, surrounding himself only with people that are able to share his personal and job adventures”.

The blog, therefore, touches every kind of themes, “environment, society, culture, art, music, literature”… I discovered that Valeria is committed, curious and has a deep soul, and a strong vitality! Moreover I discovered her writer ability… this blog was a real surprise for me!
When you are convinced to well know a person, only being beside her… he!
But let’s familiarize more doing her some questions:

Valeria, after a few months since you’ve started to go along this new ‘voyage’, what’s the meaning of writing in a blog for you, now?

Writing is always been important for me. One of that things I like is reading and, in my life, writing is almost become a natural evolution of the passion for reading. When, almost utterly, I took awareness I had abandoned writing, against my will, I became conscious that it wasn’t a bright time for me. Perhaps to write has a therapeutic effect (maybe am I like Zeno?). Anyway the blog became a niche where to note all I want to say and all is in my mind, perhaps a therapy itself.

Why do you like so much the character of Maqroll El Gaviero? What are your favourite novels?

Really are Alvaro Mutis’ books to be exciting and Maqroll is its main character, together with the female character of Ilona (about her he wrote an entire novel then become a movie ‘Ilona Llega Con La Lluvia’) and with his dearest friend Abdul (even for this character Mutis wrote a novel “Abdul Bashur, soñador de navíos”).
The scenery of Mutis’ books is the world and I think that, according to times, it is fascinating to read these kind of stories. Maqroll is in all other Mutis’s novels. If I can, I would like to suggest: “La última escala del tramp steamer”, “Amirbar” and “Un bel morir” are very pleasant to read and take your mind to new lands and experiences.

I deduce that the voyage theme is a sort of scenery that creates the background of your life. But what does a voyage give to you and what are you looking for when you are involved in a new adventure?

I can seem banal but every experience, a voyage or something that happens in the real life, changes and enrich our lives, if spent in the right way. Curiosity is fundamental. In actual times especially, I consider useless to be closed in our den, at the cost of being buried from our own fears. The search for other people makes able us to have new experiences and to know better what does seem absurd, as well as different.

So, if the blog is for you an adventure, then comments are people you meet. What do you think about the web as a place where to exchange opinions?

Comments I found on the blog are always smart. At this moment the internet seems to me the one media that gives space to all kind of ‘unpackaged’ news. Surely it has its risks, everyone could have access to it… you can find everything, but this doesn’t must be the reason to be strictly controlled. If we compare the proportion one-to-many (TV communication) with the many-to-many one (web communication), I think that the web is a good example of democracy and cultural growth.

For you environment is an important topic of the blog, we see it in many of your post. How environment affect your daily life? What’s the weight of speaking about ecology now, and what for doing something real, even if in our little lives?

The truth is that I discovered the care toward environment some times ago. I know that I can do even better. And I know also that it’s not the right way to fault politicians, because as regards the little things we must be the first to be committed. But I’m happy to see some themes spread on the web, as you and your readers demonstrate. I hope that the internet (which come to us as a fundamental media) will contribute to diffuse even more the awareness of these problems. I don’t like to use proverbs but I believe that was true that man who said ‘the knowledge makes the man free’.

And I wish to Valeria to meet on the web a lot of free people with whom share her own thoughts an I wish to everyone who’s arrived to read until here, to meet on his own road a great person like Valeria!
