Imballaggi alimentari: indietro come i gamberi / Food packaging: backwards like crabs

It’s a little time I do not speak of packaging.
But these days it seems only right to go back on, because TV continue to talk about the waste emergency in Calabria, Campania, Lazio...
When we talk about waste, on one hand we listen to many absurd stories and on the other hand lots of beautiful promises and few actions.
In fact, landfills are getting filled, incinerators burn galore, good for peace of businessmen who run them, and people are sicker in silence.
The situation is nothing short of stagnant.

And as regards me: wherever I go, by now, who knows me, before throwing anything, asks me advice – I might be called “miss rubbish” as someone in my family already do nicely –. And I almost do not speak of waste and packaging anymore. It may be the case that it’s because we have reached a certain balance. At home, between recycled and not recycled waste, the balance is decidedly on the side of recycling.
By the now distant 2008, when we embarked on the “Zero Waste Week”, the amount of unsorted waste for us has stabilized to a small bag – not even a pound – every 15 days, counting that at home we are two.
We have now taken certain habits regarding buying: bulk and on tap or at the most with 100% recyclable packaging and nothing (or almost) disposable bags, but especially with the brain to the maximum of its business to discern what does and what does not makes waste at the time of purchase.

But... there’s always a “but”! If my partner and me have become almost robotic when it comes to make purchases, knowing where to go and what to buy, sometimes we are nothing short of blown away when we find that our “trusted” products disappear, or change “clothes”.
It has already happened for the milk on tap, remember?
And for the juices...
And it happened to me several times to write kindly to the customer care of some brands in order to receive few or no answers.

In addition, we more often prefer to ‘invest’ in organic products, rather than to complain then to the doctor. The point is just that these products are sometimes packaged in such a way that all the good will to make a “green” purchase, then fails at the time to throw away the packaging.

So, put the spotlight on these two quite disturbing cases!
These are two brands that I have always believed reliable for the quality of their products, for the environment care and, also, for the declared respect for workers in the case of one of the two.

The first case is a package of frozen peas, which we use sometimes in winter, by failing to provide fresh ones. The brand in question is that of a well-known supermarket that boasts of having his own line of eco-organic products, which, I admit, we frequently buy, because it costs lower than their equivalents in the organic shop.
Well, can you explain why the organic line of this frozen product has a mixed plastic packaging that is not recyclable, while the normal one has a plastic packaging recyclable?
They are also produced in the same factory! I just can’t comprehend ... watch the indications to believe it!

In the second case, it is a brand of pasta known to me since childhood, because it comes from my homeland, Puglia, and has always been my grandparents’ favourite. Some years ago, next to the line of regular pasta they started to produce a certified organic line, it is said, on the packaging “respecting the environment and biodiversity”. In short, we preferred it, because the packaging was recyclable PP plastics.
But a few months ago, the packages have changed: the most elegant and inviting, but certainly not recyclable! Damn, this is a blow dealt to the environment!

Chiaramente c’è qualche ragione sotto e io voglio andarci a fondo. Che facciamo, indaghiamo?
So what game are we playing?
Instead of going towards more eco-friendly packaging, they go back like crabs...
Clearly there is some reason below and I want to go to the bottom. What to do, investigate?

Ex post corrigendum (2015): the packaging of frozen organic peas mentioned above, has been changed and recyclable by now! I hope I have helped with this post to improve it! ;)

No, I am not referring to the good scout girls, though I wanted to be one of them, I managed to be a scout only at the age of 16.

Quelle malcapitate dentro casa sono state gentilmente accompagnate fuori.
The title of this post is dedicated to this beautiful day, when the sun finally came out and temperature returned to be acceptable for the season – we are in late spring now and until a few days it was so cold! – It seems that outside in the garden life is teeming joyfully!
Among twittering blackbirds, sparrows and bluetits, among wonderful wild flowers – dandelion flowers with a bright gold corolla, white flowers of garlic, violets and, finally, daisies, – and luxuriant clovers there is a bustle of ladybugs. I go out to pick up the laundry hunging, which eventually dries out, and I find ladybugs everywhere, on my pants, on pegs, on clothes, at home, on the windows and the door jambs! But what a treat! Those unfortunate ones in the house were kindly accompanied out.

I do not know why but I associate this invasion to a wave of positivity! This is because today I learned two good news.

The Rubbish Diet Challenge Website
The first: do you remember my blogger friend Almost Mrs Average? Yes, yes her! She anticipated to me that this year would be exciting with her last trip to San Francisco, where she attended the conference of the Zero Waste International Alliance, as the place was chosen not by chance but because the American city has fully embraced the Zero Waste lifestyle (I invite you to read Karen’s post about it, of course, if you are familiar with English)... Well, the great Karen Cannard today announces the opening of the new site The Rubbish Diet, which is now more than just a blog: a real point of reference for those who, in the UK, wants to take part to the Zero Waste challenge, in short, a larger project, from a simple private initiative to a real national goal! I'm delighted by this news and a very big Good Luck to Karen!

Oh how I wish these fantastic initiatives happening here in Italy! But I do not lose heart, indeed, something is happening here too. Also today I learn that Zero Waste Italy is proposing throughout Italy a petition for a“Zero Waste Law” (here the summary of the proposal and here how to join). Wonderful news! From next Sunday cities banquets to sign should be set up in the streets of many Italian towns. Let’s get to spread the initiative. It’s time to change something in waste management and it’s time to start thinking with a different mentality! This is an opportunity not to be missed! As soon as I know more I will keep you informed!

Since I started writing this blog, now back in 2007, I never thought that things would change. Yet today, even in this “Ladybugs’ Day” I popped on a site with a promotional initiative on organic food. A contest, in reality, with lots of prizes (I already won an e-book), and a beautiful virtual tree that grows thanks to comments and photos of many people. Ok, there is a commercial purpose (I warned you), since it is also promoted on social networks, but it is simply wonderful to read what so many people write: now I do not feel lonely in my environmentally conscious behavior, ther’s is a myriad of people who recycle, compost, produce themselves bread and cakes, go by bike, buy organic, grow their veggies, feel closer to nature... I enjoy it, I feel euphoric and chills run on me just thinking about it! But we must to do moooore! :)

And then I finally unlock myself and write this post, even if I have a thousand things to do. I need to give voice to my heart every now and want to share the joy of this day that is ending. And finally this evening I will prepare some good seed packets to be sent to the seedbarter partner that Kia has given me with her splendid initiative of seeds bartering.
The best way to end this beautiful day!

Salvate le uova!!! / Save the eggs!!!

Easter is gone and who knows how much waste has gone in our trash bins!
You know I hate waste! And these days here at home we have done everything to avoid them.
Luckily on Easter Sunday we were guests of the dear blogger friend Cristella, because there were no seats in trains or buses to go to Puglia (no comment, please!).
So Irish and me had only to prepare the cake (a kind of "dove" made with a mix of two different recipes of Lo) and a quiche of asparagus as a second
vegetarian alternative, since the main courses were already vegetarian (one of the two queen Cristella's princesses has become veg!).
We came back home with a beautiful tray with vegetable lasagne (yum!) remained from lunch that we ate soon. The leftover cake remained until tonight... it is ending up permanently!

Given that we cooked all with fresh ingredients bought at the last minute – selecting the "organic" and the "fair" ones where possible, we expected everything but to have still 11 more eggs after Easter!
They were given away by Irish's aunt, who bought them from a local farmer. These eggs are different, you see... smaller and the eggshell is white! If I'd have known before I boiled and colored them for Easter, maybe with natural expedients as shown in the comments of this old post!
But now what can I do? Moreover they are no longer fresh. Her aunt could not consume them all!

So I make a plea to the entire web to help me to find a happy end to these eggs... a recipe or a suggestion to preserve them still... but please do not let me throw them!

A colpi di weekend ecologici... / One green weekend by another

Briefly, because I can give you this information in time only in this way: between tomorrow and the day after, in Romagna there will be another series of green events I ask you strongly to participate, if you're in the area.

The first is the usual autumn event with Ecomia, the Fair of Solidarity and Responsibility Economy, which this time will take place in two different locations and during two different weekends, the next in Riccione, 18 and 19 September, and then 2nd October in Rimini, in conjunction with AmbienteFestival, the event which will last for about a month and will accompany us to the final event of Ecomondo in November 2010.

This weekend the full program of the festival – you can give a look here – also includes two workshops in collaboration with Mani Tese Rimini the association to which I belong as you know. We will propose the laboratory "There's compost for you" (Saturday, 4 p.m.) by me – who will make you understand more closely the importance and ease of home composting – and the laboratory about the use of washable nappies (Sunday, at 4 p.m.), by the mom Alessia, who will demonstrate the practice on how to use washable nappies, their benefits, giving many tips to those who undertake to use them for their children.
A fantastic opportunity that will also be helpful to meet.

In addition to this great event, if you're not in the province of Rimini, but closer to Cesena, you should not miss the Recycling Day, which is in its third edition. The event is by Parallel Storage, sponsored and supported by the town of Cesena and M.I.Z. (Zero Impact Movement). Here there will be laboratories, music, market, exhibitions and meetings too...
I can not be there, for obvious reasons, but I'd like to hear someone of you that will be there, so we can share our impressions.

Insomma, avete l'imbarazzo della scelta, no?
In short, you are spoiled for choice, right?

Carciofini 2010: una nuova avventura tra i fornelli / Small artichokes 2010: a new cooking adventure

After the last news that will hold you in suspense (LOL) we come back to talk about our favourite topics.
One of these regards concern the “self-production”, a topic that often I neglect, to say the truth.
Yes, unlike many of you, – by now you know – I’m not a good cook but sometimes I delight to make a mess in the kitchen. On the contrary my beloved Irish is a great chef indeed!
In facts this time I pass the word to him, who will delight you telling about a day spent in the making of… small artichokes in oil!

“Well, I confess to be a greedy glutton of small artichokes in oil… take away all from me but not my small artichoke!!!
So, knowing of my gluttony, last year my aunt gave us some jars of small artichokes in oil that she made herself. After some months we ate them and thought: ‘We foolish! We go on to buy artichokes in oil at the supermarket, while we can well make them at home!’
So here we are at work now, with some glass jars (sterilized and reused), organic sunflower oil, salt, a cauldron and small artichokes.
Of course we bought small artichokes from our friend Andrea, the “poet greengrocer”, who – since we are in Viserbella – provides us weekly with all kinds of fruit and vegetables, almost all local products, grown by local farmers. We trust blindly in him as in his wife Elena, who gave us her personal recipe we proved…
Let’s start now!
The very difficult work is surely to clean and prepare artichokes. In doing it, we saw that we threw away a lot of leftovers and these were mostly the external harder leaves. However they are edible and so we organized to keep the greatest part of the leaves safe, cooking and freezing them. The other ones were thrown in the compost bin and will provide a good compost for gardening!
After having cleaned artichokes – putting them in water and lemon in the meanwhile – we took water to boil with a tablespoon of salt and a glass of vinegar. Then we immersed them and boil for 10/15 minutes. At the end we drained them and pressed in the jars, covering all with sunflower oil.
Then we closed jars and turned them over to create a vacuum packed jar and preserve better the content.
In all this new experience, with almost 100 small artichokes we obtained more than 4 jars. Unfortunately we had to open soon one of them, because the lid didn’t close well (maybe was it only an excuse? LOL).
They tasted yummy and all the day spent in the kitchen was worth, so to have for the next months small artichokes in oil that surely will be better than the purchased ones!
Now we will store more jars for the next year in order to produce more and have the right quantity to assuage my gluttony!!!”

Yes, at last this is reuse, recycle and money saving too! ;)

Rifiuti Zero vs. Pigrizia in Cucina: 1-0 / Zero Waste vs. Kitchen Laziness: 1-0

After a day of silence, you’ll be wondering about how our new incredible Zero Waste challenge is going during the European Week of Waste Reduction.
It would go great, but it happened that, as they say, “what went around, turned around”!
I don’t want to reveal anything now, because I want to wait the end of the week to give you a complete report. But, from my words you can imagine something didn’t work. This time it’s not our fault, I ensure!

In the meantime, yesterday we did another step toward waste reduction. We found an alternative to something that was necessary to us. One thing we ultimately used to avoid in our purchases: the ready-made dough to make quiches.

As many of you already know, at home we are one vegetarian and one almost-vegetarian. The word ‘almost’ is due to me, yes, I’m the black sheep! In another post I’ll tell you why. For now, it’s enough for you to know that I consume meat or fish rarely, when I’m physically down or when I’m out and something or someone tempts me.
Well, with our jobs, it’s very difficult to prepare elaborate meals, just not to eat always the same food. So, for us ready-made dough for quiches was a must. Of course we bought those industrial ones, sold in supermarkets. With all the absurd amount packaging: greaseproof paper, carton and plastic.

And what’s more: the exceeding use of vegetal oils among which the famous palm oil. You well know what the presence of palm oil means in industrial treatments: now it substitutes over all butter, olive oil, other vegetal oils and even margarine. This is the sign that it has a very low cost and is easy to import. Do you know from where the palm oil comes? Surely it belongs to not controlled plantations. In many countries of the South of the world they invaded territories that previously where occupied from forests or local people.

For years I tried to ignore this problem, eating tasty but bad mouthfuls.
But quiches were our salvation when in the evening we asked ourselves: “And what to cook, today, for dinner?”
Perhaps we’ve found the compromise. Only a time I made the brisèe dough and results weren’t good. But yesterday, thanks to this article of the great EcoAlfabeta blogger, we solved our problem!

I experimented his recipe for the dough, that at the end was more similar to pizza, but only more consistent. It’s very easy to make, with few and simple ingredients (organic at the 80% and totally waste free, of course) and it perfectly cooks in the same time of industrial dough.

I stuffed quiches with our favourite ingredients: cherry tomatoes, oregano and Greek feta.
The last one was at the point to be go bad – we bought it many weeks ago – but was saved from rubbish. It had the famous PE recyclable film from Coop, a surely better solution than those ones on the shelves of the supermarkets, with mixed plastic packaging.

The quiche was appreciated from the home cook. He approved! Yay! So it is becoming a classic on our table.

Another victory on the Zero Waste front!

Equamente Estate ’09… Alternative in Strada!

By now we said goodbye to summer, but I have still to tell you about the second part of the event ‘Equamente Estate ‘09’, in particular all you wanted to know about what happened in Cavour square in Rimini last 6 September, after the unforgettable fashion show of the previous Saturday.

Well, Sunday morning weather was beautiful, with a clean sky and a sun that was almost killing me, but encouraged the others to go out for a walk. And so it was!
After the hottest hours, the affluence was great and the group of Mani Tese of Rimini welcomed, with a great pleasure, all the curious people and sympathizers who overlooked on the square to better know the self-making, fair trade and organic and sustainable product purposes.

This day saw me participating directly to the happening both as integral part of the group, in the organization indeed, and as guest among other associations and exhibitors, showing to visitors a ‘window’ on my blog. But we’ll talk later about this…

I must admit that the setting was agitated, but at the same time was very amusing both in participating at the meetings and preparing the posters. Irish and me, with chalks in the hand, satisfied our whims in looking for a quite unusual communication for these ones that would indicate to the public the three ‘ways’ to follow. Ways? Yes, in facts the square was mostly divided in three areas with three different paths:

• “Via del Riutilizzo, Riciclaggio e dell’Autoproduzione” / Way to the Reuse, Recycle, Self-production':

It was a path dedicated to the DIY for producing bread, detergents, and where finding infos about the correct way to recycle waste and save energy and also creative reuse of clothes and objects. In the collage of photos above, you can see Grazia, who is kneading the bread, staring from the mother dough, and then Nicoletta who is telling the way for self-making eco-detergents, starting from natural ingredients, there’s Pomelo, an artist who create t-shirts from fabric waste of every kind and there’s my bench, with a laptop which shows in loop a video of nine minutes, I created to present the Dandaworld blog.

A too much sober bench… a pc, some bookmarks with the link of the blog and my e-mail, some posters created at the moment… I preferred to dedicate more time to work with the group.
Many people, however, were stopping to watch the video for some minutes, some more shy were staying far, some more enterprising were approaching to the laptop for surfing the net and making the video crush (eh eh).
Perhaps many had the chance to think about the message I wrote between a slide and another. Someone, on the contrary, stopped to chat with me, asking about what a blog is or about some topics on the blogposts. They asked about my motivations (what a embarrassment!), asked me practical suggestions on how, for example, I make washing, or making me some particular questions as the percentages of recycling in Rimini.
Surely it was a good test for me! When you are at the other side of the screen the head to head is not so direct but live is beautiful: you listen to what people wish, you compare you experience, you exchange smiles and wisecrack!

Ma torniamo ai percorsi…
But turning to paths…

• “Via delle Alternative Economiche” / Way to the Alternative Economy:

A zigzag way among the associations and organizations that have a bigger inclination to solidarity with poor people, to conscious purchasings, to respect for environment, to economies involved in little and sober realities. In facts, there were Banca Etica with the social network ZoES (Fair Sustainable Area – to which I joined too) with their economical products careful about not creating exploitation. There was RiGAS, the solidal purchasing group to which over thousand people of Rimini joined, buying organic, fair-trade and 0 km products. There was the Pacha Mama Association, even on the same wave of commerce. There were EducAid, Ceres, Maria Negretto, Una Goccia per il Mondo organizations, all faced to a the poor people, the first affected by an economy without scruples.

At the centre of the two green and blue paths there was a red path: the ‘Way to Boycotting’. Going through the posters of an exhibition about multinational companies an their mistaken economies, which brought many countries to poverty and destruction of environment, this path converges, with the two others, to the more funny “Boycott-shop”. Here many people had the chance to compare their usual purchases in a virtual shopping, reflecting about their responsibility in buying the products of some brands, determining less or more negative effects on environment and the state of some people.
At the end everybody – and me too – could measure by a test their own inclination to sustainability and fair purchasing, finding their profile in a written description. There were four profiles: superficial (instinctive), conformist (easy to be controlled), critical and conscious, fundamentalist (maniac). Would you know what was my profile? Try to guess… :D maniac!!! Yes I’m proper a maniac of organic-eco-fairtrade products… what can I do? But, no, sometimes I do some mistakes too! To sum up, as I said talking with another volunteer, the middle way is always the best!

In addiction there were the possibility to make purchase to the second hand market of Mani Tese (which saved money is always addressed to the South of the World) and to be acquainted to the same association as many did. For children there was the opportunity to have fun with clowns and puppets. At the end of the wonderful day there was the conference by Maurizio Marulli from the New Development Model Centre presenting the new “Guide to Critical Consume”, a very good vade mecum to avoid to newly fall in the temptation of advertising and to avoid unaware purchasing.

So, I can’t wait to taking part to the new edition of this beautiful initiative. I was tired at the end, yes, but this was one of those experiences that give you a great happiness. Happy to work by those wonderful persons, to know new people open to talk, happy to do a good thing for me, the other and our Earth!

P.s.: e visto che da ieri, oltre che nell'autunno siamo entrati nella Settimana dell'Ambiente vi preannuncio che stasera andrò a vedere la prima mondiale del film "The Age of Stupid". A presto, quindi con i commenti al film! / And due to the fact that we are now in Autumn but even in the Evironment Week, I announce that this evening I'm going to see the international first night of the movie "The Age of Stupid". So I'll write soon comments about it!

Hurray, the first flower!

As my new blogger friend Luby, I am very happy to see the first tomato flower blooming!

Sometimes ago, exactly the past fifth of April, I planted some cherry tomato seeds for collecting some fruits in summer. My mate and me are very fond of cherry tomatoes and, having a mostly vegetarian diet, you understand that tomatoes are fundamental ingredients of our meals.

Even having available a not so big garden, I had to choose to grow them in pots, because garden is occupied – a bit in a disarray – by various kinds of plants grown by our relatives who live in our building. Moreover the garden is constantly infested by spontaneous vegetation, parasites and insects hard to keep away. It needs a deep cleaning!

Before buying large pots, therefore I used some eggs carton boxes to grow seeds at home, near a window. It really was a marvellous experience to see growing little plants of a light green!

Then, after having raised almost ten centimetres height, I cut egg carton boxes into little pots, the same number of the compartments in which plants were, and, noting that roots had made holes in the carton, I decided to plant them all together in soil, giving them some distance, and trusting in the decay of carton itself.

E ora eccole qua. Oggi mi regalano il primo fiorellino giallo!
Anyway, space wasn’t enough and then I understood that I planted to much seeds near one to other. But the little plants grew the same, especially in height and I eliminated those weakest ones. I drove their first growing with some bamboo strips, recycled from an old bread basket. So here they are. Today they give me the first flower as a gift!

But some predators are ambushing! To prevent them – I forget where I’ve read it – I planted some chives in between the little tomato plants, they said that this herb keeps away annoying insects. But probably this wasn’t enough, because when summer began the little leaves began to be covered by strange little white tracks. It was strange, I never saw caterpillars or insects over or under the leafs and in the soil, except some midges flying around.

Altri problemi meno evidenti, qua e là qualche foglia mangiucchiata.
So I eliminated the worm-eaten leaves and it seemed thing was going better. But after some weeks I found another attack: some red rust specks over the lower leaves. And a general trend to become yellow even in the lower part of plants. This could be normal for the hot sun and the weakness of lower leaves. Other less evident problems are some eaten leaves hither and yon.

As Luby I’m somewhat worries about the presence of these insects infesting our tomato plants… she has singled out the guilty creatures, but me don’t!

Have you any idea of what is damaging our plants? You would help us a lot!
Some days ago Vivere Verde, among her extraordinary suggestions, tell us about the recipe for a natural bug spray. I have absolutely to try it. And hope to work! Otherwise I’ll found the cause – and I hope the solution – in a book about organic growing I found in sale in a shop at the seafront. When I saw it I couldn’t wait to buy it.
As I said in a comment, solution must be natural. What I grow must be 100% organic, or I don’t want it!
