Imballaggi alimentari: indietro come i gamberi / Food packaging: backwards like crabs

È da un bel po’ che non parlo di imballaggi.
Ma mi sembra doveroso tornarci su, dal momento che da un po' di tempo a questa parte in tv si continua a parlare di emergenze rifiuti in Calabria, Campania, Lazio...
E quando si parla di rifiuti da un lato ci sono tante storie assurde e dall'altro tante belle promesse e pochi fatti. Di fatto le discariche sono sempre più colme, gli inceneritori bruciano a gogo, per buona pace degli imprenditori che li gestiscono, e la gente si ammala sempre di più e in silenzio.
La situazione è a dir poco stagnante.

But these days it seems only right to go back on, because TV continue to talk about the waste emergency in Calabria, Campania, Lazio...
When we talk about waste, on one hand we listen to many absurd stories and on the other hand lots of beautiful promises and few actions.
In fact, landfills are getting filled, incinerators burn galore, good for peace of businessmen who run them, and people are sicker in silence.
The situation is nothing short of stagnant.

E io che, ormai, ovunque vada, chi mi conosce prima di gettare qualcosa mi chiede consiglio – potrei essere denominata “miss monnezza” come qualcuno simpaticamente in famiglia già fa – quasi non parlo più di rifiuti e di imballaggi.
Può darsi il caso che non ne parli perché ormai abbiamo raggiunto un certo equilibrio. In casa tra rifiuti differenziati e indifferenziati la bilancia pende decisamente dalla parte del riciclo.
La quantità del rifiuto indifferenziato per noi, dall'ormai lontano 2008, quando abbiamo intrapreso la “Settimana a Zero Rifiuti”, si è stabilizzata ad un sacchetto piccolo – nemmeno un chilo – ogni 15 giorni, contando che siamo in due.
Abbiamo ormai preso determinate abitudini in materia di acquisti: prodotti sfusi e alla spina o al massimo con imballaggi riciclabili al 100% e niente (o quasi) sportine usa e getta, ma soprattutto il cervello al massimo della sua attività nel discernere al momento dell'acquisto cosa fa rifiuto e cosa no.
And as regards me: wherever I go, by now, who knows me, before throwing anything, asks me advice – I might be called “miss rubbish” as someone in my family already do nicely –. And I almost do not speak of waste and packaging anymore. It may be the case that it’s because we have reached a certain balance. At home, between recycled and not recycled waste, the balance is decidedly on the side of recycling.
By the now distant 2008, when we embarked on the “Zero Waste Week”, the amount of unsorted waste for us has stabilized to a small bag – not even a pound – every 15 days, counting that at home we are two.
We have now taken certain habits regarding buying: bulk and on tap or at the most with 100% recyclable packaging and nothing (or almost) disposable bags, but especially with the brain to the maximum of its business to discern what does and what does not makes waste at the time of purchase.

Ma... c’è sempre un “ma”! Se io e il mio compagno siamo diventati quasi degli automi quando si tratta di fare acquisti, sapendo dove andare e cosa comprare, certe volte rimaniamo a dir poco spiazzati quando troviamo che i nostri “fidati” prodotti spariscono nel nulla o cambiano veste.
Ci è già successo per il latte alla spina, ricordate?
E per i succhi di frutta...
E a me è capitato svariate volte di scrivere in maniera garbata al servizio consumatori delle marche acquistate, per ricevere in cambio poche risposte o nulla.
Inoltre, spesso e volentieri preferiamo ‘investire’ in prodotti biologici, piuttosto che andarci poi a lamentare dal medico. Il punto è che proprio questi prodotti a volte sono confezionati in modo che tutta la buona volontà di fare un acquisto “ecologico” poi viene meno al momento di gettar via l’imballaggio.
But... there’s always a “but”! If my partner and me have become almost robotic when it comes to make purchases, knowing where to go and what to buy, sometimes we are nothing short of blown away when we find that our “trusted” products disappear, or change “clothes”.
It has already happened for the milk on tap, remember?
And for the juices...
And it happened to me several times to write kindly to the customer care of some brands in order to receive few or no answers.

In addition, we more often prefer to ‘invest’ in organic products, rather than to complain then to the doctor. The point is just that these products are sometimes packaged in such a way that all the good will to make a “green” purchase, then fails at the time to throw away the packaging.

Quindi mettiamo sotto il riflettore questi due casi abbastanza inquietanti!
Si tratta di due marche che ho sempre ritenuto affidabili, sia per la qualità dei loro prodotti che per l'attenzione all'ambiente e, anche, al dichiarato rispetto per i lavoratori nel caso di una delle due.
So, put the spotlight on these two quite disturbing cases!
These are two brands that I have always believed reliable for the quality of their products, for the environment care and, also, for the declared respect for workers in the case of one of the two.

Nel primo caso si tratta di una confezione di piselli surgelati, a cui ricorriamo qualche volta in inverno, non avendo a disposizione quelli freschi. Il brand in questione è quello di un noto supermercato che vanta di avere una sua linea di prodotti eco-biologici, di cui, ammetto, noi ci serviamo frequentemente, anche perché è a costo minore rispetto ai loro equivalenti acquistati nel negozio bio. Bene, mi spiegate come mai la linea biologica di questo prodotto surgelato ha un imballaggio di plastica mista che non è riciclabile, mentre quella normale ha un imballaggio in plastica riciclabile?
Sono anche prodotti nello stesso stabilimento! Non riesco proprio a capacitarmi... osservare le diciture per credere!
The first case is a package of frozen peas, which we use sometimes in winter, by failing to provide fresh ones. The brand in question is that of a well-known supermarket that boasts of having his own line of eco-organic products, which, I admit, we frequently buy, because it costs lower than their equivalents in the organic shop.
Well, can you explain why the organic line of this frozen product has a mixed plastic packaging that is not recyclable, while the normal one has a plastic packaging recyclable?
They are also produced in the same factory! I just can’t comprehend ... watch the indications to believe it!

 

Nel secondo caso, si tratta di una marca di pasta a me nota sin dall’infanzia, perché proviene dalla mia terra, la Puglia, ed è sempre stata la preferita dai miei nonni. Sono un po’ di anni che, accanto alla linea di pasta normale viene prodotta una linea biologica certificata, si dice, sulle confezioni “nel rispetto dell’ambiente e della biodiversità”. Insomma ne eravamo diventati degli acquirenti fissi, anche perché la confezione in PP era riciclabile nella raccolta della plastica.
Ma... da qualche mese le confezioni sono cambiate: più eleganti e invitanti, certamente ma non riciclabili!!! Accidenti, questo è un duro colpo assestato all’ambiente!
In the second case, it is a brand of pasta known to me since childhood, because it comes from my homeland, Puglia, and has always been my grandparents’ favourite. Some years ago, next to the line of regular pasta they started to produce a certified organic line, it is said, on the packaging “respecting the environment and biodiversity”. In short, we preferred it, because the packaging was recyclable PP plastics.
But a few months ago, the packages have changed: the most elegant and inviting, but certainly not recyclable! Damn, this is a blow dealt to the environment!

Insomma a che gioco giochiamo?
Invece di andare avanti verso una maggiore eco-compatibilità dell’imballaggio, si torna indietro come i gamberi... Chiaramente c’è qualche ragione sotto e io voglio andarci a fondo. Che facciamo, indaghiamo?

Upcycling Christmas 2013

Ehm, sì, un po' fuori tempo come al solito!!! Volevo farvi gli auguri di Buon Natale con questa immagine. 
Sono i miei esperimenti per un workshop di riciclo di Mani Tese per bambini, in collaborazione con il Centro per le Famiglie di Rimini, che si è tenuto il 7 dicembre.
Il tema era, ovviamente, il Natale e l'obiettivo era quello di riciclare la maggior parte possibile degli imballaggi alimentari accumulati.
Quindi, potete vedere nei riquadri pupazzetti luminosi fatti con i flaconcini dei fermenti lattici, angioletti con l'anima fatta di bottiglie in PET e ali con i vassoi dei pasticcini, decorazioni con i tubi di cartone della carta assorbente o con i tappi delle conserve e carta da regalo, alberelli fatti con i sacchetti delle patatine o con i contenitori in plastica delle uova e, infine, personaggi del presepe o renne fatte con i tappi in sughero, stoffa, stecchini, tappi metallici, polistirolo e cotonfiocchi.
Mettere qui dei tutorial per ognuno sarebbe troppo lungo, però sono cose molto semplici, basta mettere in azione la creatività e la manualità.

Uhm, yes, a little out of time as usual! I wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas with this picture.
They are my experiments for an upcycling workshop of Mani Tese for children – in collaboration with the Center for Families of Rimini – which was held on December 7. 
The theme was, of course, Christmas and the goal was to recycle as much as possible of food packaging accumulated on these days.So, you can see above light-puppets made ​​with the little bottles of lactic ferments, angels with a soul made ​​of PET bottles and wings with trays of pastries, decorations made of cardboard tubes or caps with wrapping paper, trees made ​​with chips wraps or plastic containers of eggs and, finally, the characters of the nativity scene or reindeers made ​​with cork, fabric, toothpicks, metal caps, polystyrene and cotton buds. 
Put here the tutorial for each one would be too long, however, they are very simple, just put in action creativity and skill.

Finalmente da qualche giorno sono in vacanza... vacanze brevi quest'anno, giusto il tempo per godermi un po' il mare qui a due passi e poi per far visita alla mia famiglia.

Finally a few days on holiday... a short break this year, just the time to enjoy the sea here and then to go visiting my family.

Domani, Ferragosto, lo trascorrerò qui con i familiari di Irish e tanto per cambiare un po' l'atmosfera ci siamo inventati un appuntamento informale per l'ora dell'aperitivo serale per far due chiacchiere in veranda insieme... 

Tomorrow, 15th August, I will stay here with Irish' family and for changing the atmosphere we came up with an informal appointment for the evening aperitif to chat together on the veranda...

Quindi "Chefish" – Chef Irish, lo chef di casa – si è già messo all'opera, preparando piccoli sfizi vegetariani, mentre io, oltre che dargli una mano mi sono ingegnata nei dettagli.
So "Chefish" – Chef Irish , the home chef – it is already set to work, making vegetarian little yummies, while I contrived details, as well as I help him.

Quello che vedete qui sopra è un saggio delle decorazioni che metterò in cima ad una granita di anguria fatta in casa.
Si tratta della carta dell'involucro di un panettone natalizio – eh sì io conservo tutto, ma proprio tutto! – tagliata in cerchi e decorata con pennarelli a formare delle piccole fette di anguria. I bastoncini sono i classici bastoncini di bambù che si usano per fare gli spiedini, e per incollare, nastro bi-adesivo!
What you see above is an essay of which I'll put as decorations on the top of a homemade watermelon granita.

This is the wrap of a Christmas cake – yes, I collect everything, absolutely everything! – cut into circles and decorated with felt pens to form small slices of watermelon. The sticks are the classic bamboo sticks, used to make skewers, and they are glued to slices by double-sided tape!

Insomma, non ci facciamo mancare niente: fantasia e voglia di stare allegri, e felice ferragosto a chi ci vorrà imitare! ;)

Chi ha inventato il formaggio fuso a fette? / Who did invent cheese slices?

Non so voi come la pensate ma per me questo genio dell'arte gastronomica va premiato!!!

I don't know what do you think about but this genius of gastronomic art must be awarded!!!

Odio chi ha inventato questa diavoleria!!! E pensare che da piccola ne ho mangiato talmente tanto, così come ho ingurgitato tanta altra robaccia prodotta dall'industria alimentare (e qui qualcuno avrebbe da suggerire qualcosa...).
Per un po' avevo dimenticato queste "fette" (che qui non chiamerò con il loro nome che è un marchio registrato)...
I hate who invented this devilry!!! And think that when I was a child I ate lots of this bad food from industry – someone could say something more...–.
I forgot these cheese slices for a while...

Rimaste relegate alla mia infanzia, si sono riproposte alla vista ogni qual volta son tornata a casa dai miei. Ho sempre prontamente rifiutato, ma spesso me le son ritrovate rifilate sotto forma di qualche piatto al formaggio "filante".
Poi, con mia madre ospite a casa qualche settimana fa, il formaggio fuso a fette ha fatto la sua ricomparsa.
Ebbene sì, la mia mamma purtroppo ne è dipendente... mangia quasi una fetta al giorno, con la scusa del formaggio morbido...
Ci ho riflettuto su e ho pensato che, forse, queste diavolerie creano dipendenza come tutti quei cibi che contengono grassi...
Comunque non stiamo parlando di cibo salutare, dal momento che a leggerne la composizione risulta una mescolanza di formaggi di dubbia provenienza (almeno in parte), ricca di polifosfati e altri additivi...
They were relegated to my childhood until they come back at my sight every time I went visit to my parents. I refused them each time but my mother often used them as melted ingredient for some meals.
Then some weeks ago my mother came to visit me and cheese slices made they reappearance.
Yes, unfortunately my mum is addicted to this food, she eat a slice a day, with the excuse that this cheese is softest...
So I thought about it and concluded that these devilries are addictive as that food that contains fat...
Anyway we aren't speaking of healthy food, seeing that reading ingredients this food is a mix of cheeses of dubious origin (at least in part), rich of poliphosphates and other additives...

Ma la cosa che mi urta ancora di più è un'altra: ha senso al giorno d'oggi dove siamo invasi dagli imballaggi di plastica e dai rifiuti, comprare un formaggio di cui ogni fetta è imballata singolarmente con una pellicola che non può essere riciclata?
La mia risposta è NO!
But the thing that shocks me even more is another: is sensed – today when we are invaded by plastics and waste – to buy a cheese where each single slice is wrapped with a not-recyclable film?
Of course my answer is NO!

Mi sono documentata: l'idea di incartare una per una ogni fetta è stata generata dalla necessità di far durare più a lungo la conservazione del formaggio. Mah!
L'idea di mangiare qualcosa derivata da formaggi fusi, lavorati affinché si prolunghi la stessa durata mi sembra ridicola!
L'idea che ogni singola pellicola va nei nostri rifiuti, interrata o, peggio, bruciata per tornare sotto forma di sostanze tossiche nel nostro cibo o nell'aria che respiriamo è ancora più assurda!
Sarebbe quindi opportuno evitare questi cibi super-imballati e scegliere qualcosa di più sano, più fresco e meno industriale.
Questo vale non solo per questa "invenzione" alimentare, ma per tutti gli altri alimenti super-imballati.
I documented: the idea to wrap every single slice came for the need to extend the conservation of cheese. I can't believe!
The idea of eat something derivated from melted cheeses, processed for extend the conservation is ridicule for me.
The idea of each single film going into waste, dumped or worse burned to come back as toxic substance in our food or in the air we breathe is even more absurde!
It should be better to avoid this super-wrapped food and choose something healthier, fresh and less processed.
This is valid not only for the "food invention" I've told but for all that super-wrapped food.

Vi prego, ditemi che sono stata convincente... purtroppo per la mia mamma non credo che la mia predica abbia sortito alcun effetto... :(

La creatrice ormai la conoscete, è Karen Kannard, meglio conosciuta come Almost Mrs Average.
In circa più di un anno di condivisione di idee, emozioni, preoccupazioni, progetti e stile di vita, è nata da lei (spinta dalle richieste di noi lettori del suo blog personale) l’idea di un sito che raccogliesse informazioni su marche e prodotti eco-sostenibili, più specificatamente vicine alla riduzione degli imballaggi e al loro riciclaggio.
You know yet who is the creative mind, she is Karen Kannard, better known as Almost Mrs Average.
In about a year and more of sharing of ideas, emotions, concerns, projects and lifestyle, –inspired by request from us, the readers of her own blog – she had the idea of a site, that pick up information about brands and products eco-sustainable, more specifically close to the reduction of packaging and their recycling.

Il sito in realtà è partito già da qualche settimana e già comincia ad avere un grande successo.
I post sono scritti da più autori e chiunque volendo, può contribuire alla segnalazione di prodotti interessanti che spingano al riuso, al riciclo e a produrre meno rifiuti. Il sito non è soggetto a sponsorizzazioni e i singoli autori mettono semplicemente a disposizione le loro esperienze per facilitare anche ai meno ‘impegnati’ una strada agevole verso la riduzione dei rifiuti.
The site is actually started a few weeks ago and it is already beginning to have a great success.
Posts are written by many authors, and anyone who wish to, can contribute to report of interesting products that encourage reuse, recycling and producing less waste. The site is not subject to sponsorship and individual authors simply provide their experiences to help even the ‘least committed’ to find an easy way to reduce waste.

Ci sono già numerose segnalazioni di prodotti commercializzati a livello internazionale. Anche se la lingua è inglese e alcuni prodotti sono diversi o non commercializzati qui in Italia, io consiglio comunque di dare uno sguardo per capire che fuori dal nostro piccolo mondo qualcosa si sta muovendo ed è qualcosa che può coinvolgere anche noi!
There are already numerous reports of products internationally sold. Even if the language of site is English, and some products are different or not sold in Italy, however, I advice to take a look to see that, outside our little world, something is moving and this can involve us!

È la prova che lo stile di vita a Zero Rifiuti non è impossibile, e che, se lo vogliamo, noi consumatori possiamo spingere la produzione industriale a convertirsi in scelte più responsabili sul proprio impatto ambientale.
It is the evidence that Zero Waste lifestyle is not impossible, and that if the we want, as consumers we can push industrial production to be converted into more responsible choices about their environmental impact.

La “lista grigia” dei rifiuti (puntata n. 1: il frigorifero) / The waste “grey list” (issue n.1 the fridge)

Nonostante i vari incoraggiamenti dei lettori, ultimamente mi è mancato l’input che mi spinge a condividere la mia vita sul blog. Cause? Eventi più o meno piacevoli che mi hanno distratta, mancanza di tempo libero e anche un pizzico di apatia che ultimamente inquina la mia esistenza…
Despite the encouragement of several readers, I recently missed the input that leads me to share my life on the blog.
What the causes? More or less pleasing events that made me distracted, lack of leisure and also a bit of apathy which ultimately pollutes my life...

Ma, niente paura. Sotto la cenere cova sempre la brace: mi ci sono voluti un po’ di giorni per redigere una prima “lista grigia”, la lista delle cose che acquistiamo per abitudine e che vanno ad alimentare lo scomparto della spazzatura “indifferenziata” o non riciclabile.
Ritengo molto utile fare questo passo se si vuole arrivare all’obiettivo di ridurre i rifiuti.

Per questo apporrò presto anche un sondaggio, dove voi potrete indicare ciò che i vostri consumi indispensabili che creano rifiuti non riciclabili.

Intanto partiamo dal frigorifero, indagando fra i prodotti che consumiamo di più. Segnaleremo i prodotti con il packaging meno riciclabile e quelli invece per i quali, nel frattempo, abbiamo trovato un’alternativa (in rosso). Ovviamente non possiamo citare le marche dei prodotti, per cui faremo attenzione ad essere il più possibile descrittivi.
Meanwhile, starting from the refrigerator, we're investigating products we consume more. To show the products with less recyclable packaging and those for which, however, in the meantime, we have found an alternative - in red –. Obviously we cannot quote the brand of products, so we care to be as descriptive as possible.

Nel freezer di solito abbiamo / We usually have in the freezer:

• Verdure congelate in scatola (spinaci, minestrone e piselli biologici, cotolette e burger vegetali e asparagi):
le scatole in cartone sono spesso rivestite all’interno da una leggera patinatura, quindi non sono riciclabili con la carta. Unica alternativa trovata, un tipo di asparagi con scatola di cartone non patinato e all’interno un sacchetto sigillato in PE riciclabile.
• Frozen vegetables, in box (spinach, soup and organic peas, vegetable cutlets and burgers and asparagus):
cardboard boxes are often covered in a lightweight coating, and are not recyclable with paper. The only alternative we found, a type of asparagus with no patinated cardboard box and sealed inside a bag in recyclable PE.

• Verdure congelate in busta (spinaci, bieta):
la maggior parte dei sacchetti sono in plastica mista non riciclabile. Occhio, verificate l’esistenza del simbolo di riciclabilità! Poche marche hanno il sacchetto riciclabile, noi lo abbiamo trovato solo per la bieta.
• Frozen vegetables bags  (spinach, bieta):

Most bags are by mixed plastic that are not recyclable. Look, verified the existence of the recycling symbol! There are few brands with a recyclable bag, we have found it only for bieta.

• Sacchetti del congelatore con contenuti vari (pane, verdura cotta in casa, impasto per pizza):
in genere noi li riutilizziamo, nonostante quello che c’è scritto sulle confezioni, almeno fino a quando sono in buone condizioni. Però di recente abbiamo trovato una valida alternativa, i sacchetti per congelare completamente biodegradabili (Mater-Bi®).
• Freezer bags with different content (bread, cooked vegetables, pizza dough):
usually we reuse them, despite what is written on the packaging, at least until they are in good condition. But we recently found an alternative, completely biodegradable freezer bags (Mater-Bi®).

Passando agli scomparti del frigo abbiamo / Turning to the compartments of the fridge, we have:

• Burro:
consumiamo una moderata quantità di burro biologico, ma finora non siamo riusciti a trovare una marca con un packaging riciclabile (solitamente la carta che lo avvolge è rivestita internamente da un film di plastica mista). L’ideale sarebbe trovarlo confezionato in stagnola, di modo che questa si possa poi lavare e riciclare con gli imballaggi leggeri. Proveremo a cercare altre marche.

• Butter:
We consume moderate amounts of organic butter, but so far we didn't managed to find a brand with a recyclable packaging – usually the paper that wraps is coated internally by a mixed plastic film –. The ideal would be to find it packed in tinfoil, so that it can be washed and recycled with the lightweight packaging. We'll try to look for other brands.

• Rotolo di pasta sfoglia/briseé/frolla confezionata:
l’involucro esterno è in genere una plastica non definita, poi c’è un cartoncino, (fortunatamente riciclabile) e poi la carta forno che avvolge l’impasto, che sappiamo non essere né riciclabile né compostabile! Lo sappiamo, dovremmo farne a meno, però purtroppo questi preparati ci salvano un sacco di volte che abbiamo poco tempo per cucinare (sono pochi i piatti vegetariani da fare al volo…). Qualcuno ha suggerimenti?
• Packed roll of pastry/briseé/frollo dough:
the pack is usually by a undefined plastic, then there is a cartonboard – fortunately easy to recycle – paper and then the oven paper that wraps the dough, which we know to be neither recycled nor compostable! We know we shouldn't buy it anymore, but unfortunately these preparations will save a lot of time when we haven't it for cooking – there are few vegetarian dishes to be done on the fly...–. Some suggestions?

• Formaggi stagionati (parmigiano, grana, caciotte, provolone, provola, asiago, fontina, groviera):
presi sia confezionati che al banco, questi sono sempre avvolti da pellicole in plastiche miste. Ogni tanto si presenta la possibilità di acquistare i formaggi in banchi alle fiere oppure presso il gruppo di acquisto solidale che frequentiamo e in questo modo riusciamo a evitare l’involucro di plastica. Dovremmo adottare questa pratica più spesso, ma non tutti i formaggi si trovano così!
• Seasoned cheese (parmesan, grana, caciotta, provolone, provola, asiago, fontina, etc.):
buying them in wrap or bulk, they are always surrounded by mixed in plastic film. From time to time there is the possibility buying cheese at the fairs or at the local buying group (GAS) we are attending and in this way we can avoid plastic casing. We should adopt this practice more often, but not all cheeses are available!

• Formaggi freschi e latticini (stracchino e mozzarella in genere):
lo stracchino è di solito avvolto in una carta plastificata, mentre le mozzarelle in genere sono in un sacchetto di plastica mista. Abbiamo trovato una marca di mozzarella la cui confezione è in PE riciclabile, ma sullo stracchino siamo ancora indietro… ogni tanto lo sostituiamo con la locale "casatella", servita al banco in un contenitore in PS lavabile, riutilizzabile e anche riciclabile.
• Fresh cheese and dairy products (stracchino and mozzarella in general):
stracchino is usually wrapped in a plastic card, while mozzarella in general is in a mixed plastic bag. We found a brand of mozzarella packaged in recyclable PE, but we are still searching for stracchino... it's sometimes replaced with the local "casatella", served in a washable, reusable and recyclable PS container.

• Vino:
la bottiglia è in vetro, ma spesso il tappo invece che in sughero è in plastica mista e non si riesce a capire subito perché il collo è rivestito a sua volta da un film di plastica altrettanto sconosciuta! Accidenti! Forse sarebbe il caso di comprarlo sfuso, ogni tanto!
• Wine:
the bottle is by glass, but often the cap instead of cork is by mixed plastic and you can't see it because the neck is covered in turn by a unknown plastic film! Damn! Perhaps it would be the time to buy it bulk, sometimes!

E la lista per ora si ferma qui.
Non compaiono nella lista: le uova biologiche, che hanno il cartone riciclabile; olive, carciofini, preparato vegetale per brodo, marmellata, che compriamo in barattoli di vetro; il latte, che compriamo sfuso al distributore e lo imbottigliamo in vetro; la birra e la polpa di pomodoro in bottiglie di vetro; lo yogurt e il gelato che prepariamo in casa; infine, tutta la frutta e la verdura che compriamo al mercato dal nostro ortolano/poeta di fiducia, che ormai è abituato a mettere i nostri acquisti nei sacchetti di carta e nelle sportine di tela che portiamo.

Not in the list: organic eggs, which have the recyclable cardboard - olives, artichokes, prepared vegetable broth and jam, we buy in glass jars – milk, we buy in bulk to the distributor and bottle in glass – beer and tomato pulp in glass bottles – yoghurt and ice cream we prepare at home – finally, the whole fruit and vegetables we buy at the market from our trusted greengrocer/poet, which now use to put our purchases in paper bags and canvas shoppers we brought.

Una piccola buona notizia / A little good news

Una piccola cosa di cui gli abitanti di Viserbella a mare della ferrovia possono gioire: dall’inizio di ottobre, come promesso dall’Hera stessa – a cui avevo chiesto alcune informazioni – è attivo il servizio di raccolta degli “imballaggi leggeri”: la raccolta riguarda ogni tipo di imballaggio in plastica, acciaio e alluminio privi di residui, quindi bottiglie, flaconi, barattoli, lattine, sacchetti, involucri trasparenti, cassette e cellophane.
Occhio, quindi, ai simboli di riciclo che sono impressi sugli imballaggi! Sull’argomento della simbologia scriverò appositamente più di un post riprendendo quelli precedenti.
Just a little thing of which the inhabitants of Viserbella can be happy: since the first of October, as the Hera promised (the local society of waste collection) – I wrote them asking for information –, the facility for light packaging recycling collection is active: every kind of package can be recycled, including plastic, steel and aluminium cleaned from residues, so bottles, cans, bags, transparent packages, boxes and films.
So, be careful to recylcing symbols which are impressed on packaging! I'll wrote more specific posts about symbols, recovering those I previously wrote.

Finalmente è finito in parte un incubo per noi che dovevamo trascinarci dietro buste con la raccolta degli imballaggi leggeri fino ai cassonetti al di là della ferrovia. Ora non ci rimane che si estenda anche ai mesi invernali la raccolta della frazione organica, per la quale ancora ci facciamo qualche passeggiata, con sacchetti biodegradabili a volte sul punto di rompersi per quanto sono pieni!
Finally a nightmare is stopped for us who were forced to bring big bags with light packaging to the bins behind the ralway.
Now we hope that the collection of organic waste fraction will extend here in winter. We still must to do some walks bringing with us the biodegradable bags, full to the point ok breaking.

A meno che non riusciamo a metter su la compostiera. Eh sì sarebbe un grande passo!
Intanto mi godo la presenza di questo bel bidoncino con le ruote giallo che dà un tocco di colore in più al grigiore invernale di una fin troppo tranquilla stradina che va verso il mare!

Continuiamo a parlare di simboli “di smaltimento”
Let’s go on referring to symbols “about disposal”

“Il Punto Verde” (o “Der Grüne Punkt”) (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Punto_Verde).
È un bollino rotondo costituito da due frecce che si rincorrono, ed è rappresentato spesso a uno o più colori (le due frecce in genere sono di due differenti verdi).
Sembra voler dire che l’imballaggio è riciclabile ma non è così. Quanti di voi lo sapevano?
Ha ingannato anche me e poi ho appreso la verità: è un simbolo ideato per un sistema di raccolta e smaltimento dei rifiuti istituito in Germania, che prevede secondo la legge locale, una tassa a carico delle aziende aderenti, che paga alla società DSD (Duales System Deutshland) il costo di raccolta, selezione e riciclaggio degli imballaggi.
Questo sistema è stato esteso poi agli Stati Membri, attraverso l’organizzazione europea Pro Europe (Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe), con l’autorizzazione ad utilizzare il marchio e quindi lo ritroviamo su moltissimi prodotti anche qui in Italia.
Quindi questo significa che gli imballaggi recanti questo marchio sono prodotti da aziende aderenti all’organizzazione nazionale appartenente al sistema Pro Europe, per cui queste pagano i costi di recupero e riciclo. Aziende, quindi, che si caricano dei costi ambientali, ma che non forniscono al consumatore ulteriori informazioni di smaltimento a meno che il Punto Verde non sia accompagnato da altro simbolo di riciclo e di specifica del materiale. In Italia è il CONAI ad occuparsi del recupero degli imballaggi.
Quegli imballaggi recanti solo questo marchio, quindi, non sono riciclabili! Quindi fate attenzione quando il materiale di cui è fatto l’oggetto non è indicato, rischiate di compromettere la raccolta differenziata!
"The Green Dot" (or "Der Grüne Punkt") (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_Punto_Verde).
It is a dot that consists of two arrows that run, often represented in one or more colors (the two arrows are generally of two different green).
It seems to say that the packaging is recyclable but it is not true. How many of you knew it?
It also deceived me and then I learned the truth: it is a symbol designed for a waste collection and disposal system in Germany. According to the local law, this system provides a tax for the participating companies, which pay the costs of collection, sorting and recycling of packaging to the DSD (Duales System Deutshland).
This system was then extended to Member States, through the European organisation Pro Europe (Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe), with the authorization to use the mark. So we find this on many products, whether here in Italy. This means that packages bearing this mark are produced by companies which are members of the national organisation, belonging to Pro Europe system, for which they pay the costs of recovery and recycling.
These companies, therefore, take the load environmental costs, but not provide more disposal informationfor the consumers unless the Green Point on the packaging is accompanied by other recycling symbol or a specification of the material. In Italy CONAI is the organisation dealing in recovery of packaging.
So, those packages bearing this mark only, aren’t really recyclable! So be careful when the material of objects is not indicated, you risk compromising the recycling process!

“Il Ciclo di Mobius” (triangolo di riciclo con le frecce che si rincorrono).
Questo ha invece sicuramente valenza internazionale per quanto riguarda la raccolta differenziata. Spesso lo troviamo con un numero posto al centro dello stesso o con una sigla in basso, che specificano meglio il tipo di materiale. Quando non è accompagnato da alcun numero significa che il materiale è riciclabile.

Quando invece è accompagnato da una percentuale significa che il materiale è riciclato e la percentuale sta ad indicare la quantità di materiale riciclato presente. I numeri e le sigle saranno elencati in seguito, in maniera più approfondita, nei successivi post sui differenti materiali.
“Cycle of Mobius” (recycling triangle with arrows that are chasing).
This certainly has an international meaning that regards recycling. We often find it with a number placed at the centre or acronyms at the bottom, which specify the type of material. When it is not accompanied by anything means only that the material is recyclable. When it is accompanied by a percentage means that the material is recycled and the percentage is used to signify the amount of recycled material. The numbers and acronyms will be listed in forthcoming blogposts about materials.

Il “KCA-Logo” (bidone con la croce sopra)
Sta ad indicare che l’imballaggio in questione contiene sostanze pericolose per l’ambiente e non va quindi gettato nei normali cassonetti della raccolta dei rifiuti urbani ma negli appositi bidoni dei rifiuti pericolosi o conferito al centro di raccolta dei rifiuti speciali (isole ecologiche). Può riguardare pile, accumulatori, e packaging di prodotti chimici tipo pesticidi, solventi e vernici.
Nonostante il simbolo riguardi più il contenuto che l’imballaggio è a tutti gli effetti un’indicazione di legge sullo smaltimento dell’imballaggio stesso.
The “KCA-Logo”(bin with the cross above)
It is an indication that the package contains hazardous substances for the environment and therefore it can’t be thrown into the black bins but must be thrown in appropriate waste bins or given to a centre for special waste. It can cover batteries, chargers, and packaging of products as chemical pesticides, solvents and paints.
Despite the symbol relates to several contents it is all effective on the disposal of packaging itself, according to local laws.

Alla fine di questa prima carrellata voglio aggiungere una nota che non mi sembra affatto trascurabile: la normativa vigente attualmente dice che l’etichettatura ambientale degli imballaggi non è obbligatoria ma volontaria!!! Al giorno d’oggi, con tutti questi problemi connessi all’ambiente, non capisco il perché…
Ringrazio il CONAI per aver fornito attraverso il suo sito le informazioni redatte dall’Istituto Italiano Imballaggio. Ci si augura che prima o poi venga redatta una guida rivolta più ai consumatori che alle aziende!
At the end of this first series I want to add a note that I can’t consider hardly negligible: the existing legislation currently says that environmental labelling of packaging is not mandatory but
voluntary! Nowadays, with all these problems related to the environment, I don’t understand why…

Riciclare è un problema?
Per molte persone sì. Specialmente quelle meno giovani, e anche quelle più svogliate, è difficile comprendere quali siano gli oggetti che si possono riciclare quelli che vanno nella raccolta indifferenziata o quelli che possono essere nocivi all’ambiente se mandati in discarica.
C’è un grande varietà di materiali e una altrettanto vasta modalità di comunicazione sulle confezioni attraverso simboli che spesso non aiutano ma confondono la comprensione anche da parte dei consumatori più attenti. Io stessa a volte rimango nel dubbio.
Do you think recycling is a problem?
For most of the people, yes it is. Especially for the not so young, and even the lazy, it is difficult to understand what are things that can be recycled or not and even things that may be harmful to the environment if sent to the landfill.
There is a wide variety of materials and equally wide communication ways, so not only symbols on the packaging often don’t help but also they confuse the more careful consumers too. Sometimes I remain in doubt myself.

Ho deciso, quindi, di inaugurare con questo una serie di post che cercheranno di chiarire (anche a me stessa) gli elementi grafici presenti sui vari involucri (packaging), sfruttando la mia conoscenza in materia di comunicazione e approfondendola nello specifico settore con mie ricerche personali. Vi avverto però che molti di questi simboli sono validi solo nel nostro Paese quindi consiglio ai visitatori stranieri di consultare le fonti che riguardano il packaging nella propria nazione.
Therefore, starting from this with a series of blogposts, I decided to clarify – including to myself – the graphical elements printed on the various casings (packaging). I’ll use my knowledge in graphic design and my personal effort, searching in the specific fields. Be advised, however, that many of these symbols are valid only in our country (Italy), therefore foreign readers would consult sources concerning the packaging in their nation.

Partirò dalla simbologia generica che può riguardare prodotti di vario tipo, poi analizzerò i simboli che riguardano alcuni tipi di prodotti particolari e poi approfondiremo i singoli materiali che costituiscono gli imballaggi e i relativi codici grafici in modo da poter individuare bene il modo corretto per smaltirli.
I’ll start from the generic symbolism that may cover products of various kind, then I’ll consider symbols concerning particular products and at last I’ll talk deeply about the various materials that make up the packaging and the graphic codes in order to identify the right way to dispose them.

Affrontiamo per prima i simboli “di smaltimento” più ricorrenti sulle confezioni semplificandone a parole la grafica:
Let’s start first from the more common symbols “about disposal”, simplifying graphics:

Omino + Cestino o Bidone
Spesso è rappresentato da pittogrammi non sempre uguali, ma tutti con lo stesso significato che spesso è riportato anche per iscritto: “non disperdere nell’ambiente dopo l’uso”. Questo tipo di simbolo non ha alcun significato strettamente connesso con la raccolta differenziata.
Alcune aziende, invece, intelligentemente hanno pensato di usare lo stesso simbolo per specificare in quale tipo di raccolta differenziata l’imballaggio va gettato. Qui sotto potete trovarne qualche esempio. Ci si augura che prima o poi questo tipo di comunicazione diventi più diffuso.
Man + Bin
It is often represented not always by the same pictogram, but all symbols have the same meaning – often written in words – which is “do not leave in environment after use”. This kind of symbol has no meaning closely connected with the recycling. Some companies, however, intelligently thought to use the same symbol to specify in what kind of recycling bin you can throw away. Here below, you can find some examples. I hope that sooner or later this type of communication will become more widespread.
