A differenza di come la realtà dovrebbe essere, oggi esprimere una libera opinione è sempre più difficile, soprattutto se questa è critica verso certe sfere alte dell’economia o della politica. Non sono solita, infatti, espormi più di tanto a riguardo, ma ho sentito il bisogno di intavolare l’argomento che seguirà, prendendo spunto da un fatto accadutomi di recente. Vorrei più che altro capire qualcosa di più, mettere in discussione le mie convinzioni, ascoltare le opinioni di voi altri.
It was in my intentions to write this blog post since a long time, but I was doubtful on how to do it.
Far from how reality must be, today it’s even more hard to tell your own opinion, especially if it is critical toward some high spheres of economy or politics. In fact, I’m not that one who lays herself open about this, but I felt the need to talk about something you’ll read below, being inspired from a fact recently happened to me. I want to understand something more, putting in discussion my beliefs and listening to your opinions.
Arrivo al dunque.
Giorni fa ero al piccolo supermercato della zona per acquistare, assieme al mio compagno, quelle poche cose che di solito ci restano nella lista della spesa dopo esserci riforniti al mercato locale, al gruppo di acquisto solidale o al nostro preferito negozio bio della città.
Premetto che tra i due supermercati più importanti della zona preferiamo questo, poiché offre un’ampia scelta di prodotti biologici e fair-trade, offre diversi servizi per famiglie e categorie svantaggiate, si pone come rispettoso dei diritti dei lavoratori e dell’ambiente.
Avete capito bene di quale catena sto parlando.
So I’m getting down to the nitty-gritty.
Some days ago I was at the little local supermarket, with my mate, to purchase some of the few things that usually remain in the shopping list after being restocked at the local market, at the local exchange group or at our favourite eco-shop of the city.
I want to say in advance that between the two most important local supermarkets, we prefer this one, because it offers a wide selection of organic and fair trade products, it helps families and disadvantage classes and says to be respectful of workers’ rights and environment.
You surely understood what I’m talking about.
Ho sempre creduto in questo marchio e ho sempre apprezzato tante piccole iniziative che ha realizzato e che tuttora porta avanti: l’uso delle buste riutilizzabili ed ora biodegradabili, l’uso di una chiara simbologia per quanto riguarda il riciclo del packaging, la vendita di ricariche per i detergenti, i prodotti a basso consumo di materiali ed energia… e potrei continuare con la campagna per la diffusione delle “bat-box”, l’iniziativa “seminar libri”…
I always believed in this company and I always appreciated all the little initiatives they realized and still realize: the use of reusable bags or now biodegradable ones, the use of clear recycling symbols, the sell of refills for detergents, low energy and material consume products… and I can go on with the “bat-boxes” campaign, the “seeding books” initiative…
… Ma…
Sì, c’è un “ma”!
… But…
Yes, I've said “but”!
Negli ultimi tempi mi è sembrato che questa azienda abbia fatto qualche passo indietro. Innanzitutto, leggendo la rivista per i soci, ho notato che temi come “ambiente” ed “etica” sono troppo spesso sovra-utilizzati. Per esempio sono rimasta un po’ perplessa sulla ormai vecchia diatriba su un certo tipo di macellazione da poco introdotto, alla quale polemica l’azienda ha risposto con un vago comunicato stampa. Poi, osservando bene il packaging di alcuni prodotti mi sono accorta di alcune incongruenze nelle diciture di smaltimento, laddove al posto di un determinato materiale plastico ne era indicato un altro. Sono rimasta altrettanto male quando hanno sostituito al reparto gastronomia i contenitori in PLA compostabile con quelli in PET. Tutte cose che io ho prontamente esposto loro via mail, non ricevendo alcuna risposta se non quel comunicato stampa.
In the last times it seems like this company has done some steps backwards.
First of all, reading the review for the associated clients, I noticed that themes like “environment” and “ethic” are too much used. For example I remained a bit puzzled on an old diatribe about a certain kind of new butchering, to which controversy they replied with a vague press release. Then, observing carefully the packaging of some products I noticed some incongruities on disposal wordings, where it was shown the initials of a material in lieu of another one. I was indeed disappointed when they sold deli in PET boxes instead of the compostable PLA ones. All these things I wrote them in a mail, receiving only the simple press-release I said above.
Ma ecco ciò che mi ha fatto irritare di più.
In quella famosa lista di quel giorno c’erano i succhi di frutta biologici che noi usiamo bere a colazione tutti i giorni. Buonissimi e ad un ottimo prezzo e imbottigliati in vetro.
Ma ecco ciò che temevo, dopo aver letto un articolo sulla famosa rivista. Si rifà vivo un incubo che speravo non tornasse più: il packaging in vetro è stato sostituito dal tetrapak!!! Nooooo!!!
But this hurt me more.
In that famous list on that day there were the organic fruit juices we use to drink every day at breakfast. They are very good for taste and price and they “were” bottled in glass.
All I feared for – after having read an article about them – came true: the glass bottle was replaced from a tetra pak box! What a nightmare!
Dopo aver tentennato a lungo, abbiamo deciso di lasciare i succhi sullo scaffale…
Ma, in un ultimo giro di ricognizione, sono riuscita a trovare nell’angolo delle offerte ben cinque ultime bottiglie di succo di albicocca biologico. Evvai!!!
After having wavered for a long time, we decided to leave the juices on the shelf…
But, in a last tour of recognition, I founded well five last bottles of organic apricot juice. Yay!
Eccole qua le superstiti. E quando finiranno? Dovrò tornare al tetrapak?
Aiutatemi voi! Io finora non sono riuscita a trovare una soluzione.
Considero questo materiale rispetto al vetro molto meno ecologico. Anche se in alcuni articoli si dà una valutazione opposta alla mia. Sono soprattutto articoli in inglese – vedi per esempio questo o questo – dove si spiega l’eco-compatibilità del tetrapak secondo alcune ragioni.
So here there are the survivors. And when they’ll finish? Have I to turn back to the tetra pak?
Help me please! I cannot find a solution.
I consider this material not so green. Even if in some articles someone says the opposite. I found it in many English articles – i.e. this or that– where authors show that tetra pak is environmentally friendly due to some reasons.
1. In primo luogo perché è più leggero e il suo trasporto fa risparmiare più benzina e quindi comporta meno produzione di gas serra.
In a first place because it is lighter and its transport saves more petrol and produces less greenhouse gases.
2. In secondo luogo perché la materia prima del cartone è un materiale rinnovabile e proviene da foreste controllate FSC.
Then because the first material of carton is renewable and belongs to FSC forests.
3. In terzo luogo è possibile riciclare il tetrapak in sottoprodotti che possono essere utilizzati per cartoleria e gadgettistica.
In a third place it is possible to recycle tetra pak in sub-products used for stationery and gadgets.
4. Un’ultima ragione è che sembra che il ciclo del tetrapak sia meno energivoro di quello del vetro.
Last reason is that it seems like the life cycle of tetra pak consumes less energy than glass.
Mah. Ora io ho cercato di valutare attentamente tutte queste affermazioni e credo che restino parecchi problemi irrisolti.
Mmh. Now I tried to value with attention every assertion and I think that lots of problems are still unsolved.
1. Parlare del consumo di benzina per i trasporti significa avere poca lungimiranza. Quanto potremo contare ancora sul petrolio come combustibile per gli spostamenti? Inoltre, non sarebbe più auspicabile prevedere una produzione più larga sul territorio e quindi più vicina ai punti di distribuzione?
To speak of petrol consumes as regards transportations, means to have a lack of foresight. How long we can trust in oil as fuel for movements?And what’s more, why do not distribute the production all over the country in order to have products nearer to sale points?
2. È vero che il cartone è rinnovabile come risorsa, perché le foreste possono essere ripiantate, ma per me il vero materiale rinnovabile è quello che si può riciclare all’infinito e il cartone non lo è quando è praticamente saldato all’alluminio e alla plastica!
It’s true that the carton is a renewable resource, because forests can be planted again, but for me the real renewable material is that one you can recycle endlessly and carton isn’t when it is glued to aluminium and plastic!
3. Quindi il tetrapak non è riciclabile all’infinito. E inoltre in Italia non abbiamo sufficienti aziende trasformatrici di questo prodotto. Per riciclarlo dobbiamo trasportarlo nel migliore dei casi all’estero, consumando quindi nuovamente benzina.
Invece il vetro è infinitamente riciclabile ed anche riutilizzabile e questo abbatte notevolmente la sua impronta ecologica!
So the tetra pak isn’t recyclable endlessly. And In Italy we haven’t enough recycling companies for it. We have to bring it abroad, consuming petrol again.
On the contrary glass is endlessly recyclable and also reusable, so it means that reusing it reduces a lot its environmental impact!
4. Il tetrapak meno inquinante? Da quanto ho letto su un'altra fonte si sta cercando di ridurre la quantità di plastica ed alluminio, materiali che, quindi, sono responsabili di un certo impatto ambientale.
Does really tetra pak pollute less? I read some news about the fact that Tetra Pak is reducing the amount of aluminium and plastic in cartons, but this means that they long contribute to carbon emissions.
Inoltre, vorrei aggiungere che a volte per affermare l’ecologicità di questi materiali "ibridi", come spiegato in questo articolo, si tiene conto del recupero energetico di questo materiale, il che significa – orrore! – che si considera la quantità di energia recuperata dall’incenerimento. E cosa vogliamo dire rispetto alle micro-nano-particelle prodotte in questa fase, che potrebbero essere dannose all’ambiente e alla salute dell’uomo?
What’s more, I want to add that, in order to say that a “hybrid” product like this is green – as this article shows –, someone calculates also the energy amount that derives from incineration, heck!
So what about the micro-nano-particles released in this phase, that could be dangerous for environment and health?
Allora perché scegliere il tetrapak al posto del vetro per dei prodotti oltremodo biologici? Forse non dovremmo pensare anche un po’ di più allo smaltimento di certi materiali?

So why to replace glass with tetra pak for organic products indeed? Maybe have we to reflect more about the disposal of some materials?
