Le superstiti (o meglio vetro vs tetrapak) / The survivors (or better glass vs tetra pak)

It was in my intentions to write this blog post since a long time, but I was doubtful on how to do it.
Far from how reality must be, today it’s even more hard to tell your own opinion, especially if it is critical toward some high spheres of economy or politics. In fact, I’m not that one who lays herself open about this, but I felt the need to talk about something you’ll read below, being inspired from a fact recently happened to me. I want to understand something more, putting in discussion my beliefs and listening to your opinions.

So I’m getting down to the nitty-gritty.
Some days ago I was at the little local supermarket, with my mate, to purchase some of the few things that usually remain in the shopping list after being restocked at the local market, at the local exchange group or at our favourite eco-shop of the city.
I want to say in advance that between the two most important local supermarkets, we prefer this one, because it offers a wide selection of organic and fair trade products, it helps families and disadvantage classes and says to be respectful of workers’ rights and environment.
You surely understood what I’m talking about.

I always believed in this company and I always appreciated all the little initiatives they realized and still realize: the use of reusable bags or now biodegradable ones, the use of clear recycling symbols, the sell of refills for detergents, low energy and material consume products… and I can go on with the “bat-boxes” campaign, the “seeding books” initiative…

… Ma…
Sì, c’è un “ma”!
… But…
Yes, I've said “but”!

In the last times it seems like this company has done some steps backwards.
First of all, reading the review for the associated clients, I noticed that themes like “environment” and “ethic” are too much used. For example I remained a bit puzzled on an old diatribe about a certain kind of new butchering, to which controversy they replied with a vague press release. Then, observing carefully the packaging of some products I noticed some incongruities on disposal wordings, where it was shown the initials of a material in lieu of another one. I was indeed disappointed when they sold deli in PET boxes instead of the compostable PLA ones. All these things I wrote them in a mail, receiving only the simple press-release I said above.

Nooooo!!!
But this hurt me more.
In that famous list on that day there were the organic fruit juices we use to drink every day at breakfast. They are very good for taste and price and they “were” bottled in glass.
All I feared for – after having read an article about them – came true: the glass bottle was replaced from a tetra pak box! What a nightmare!

Evvai!!!
After having wavered for a long time, we decided to leave the juices on the shelf…
But, in a last tour of recognition, I founded well five last bottles of organic apricot juice. Yay!

So here there are the survivors. And when they’ll finish? Have I to turn back to the tetra pak?
Help me please! I cannot find a solution.
I consider this material not so green. Even if in some articles someone says the opposite. I found it in many English articles – i.e. this or that– where authors show that tetra pak is environmentally friendly due to some reasons.

In a first place because it is lighter and its transport saves more petrol and produces less greenhouse gases.
Then because the first material of carton is renewable and belongs to FSC forests.
In a third place it is possible to recycle tetra pak in sub-products used for stationery and gadgets.
Last reason is that it seems like the life cycle of tetra pak consumes less energy than glass.

Mah.
Mmh. Now I tried to value with attention every assertion and I think that lots of problems are still unsolved.

To speak of petrol consumes as regards transportations, means to have a lack of foresight. How long we can trust in oil as fuel for movements? And what’s more, why do not distribute the production all over the country in order to have products nearer to sale points?
It’s true that the carton is a renewable resource, because forests can be planted again, but for me the real renewable material is that one you can recycle endlessly and carton isn’t when it is glued to aluminium and plastic!
So the tetra pak isn’t recyclable endlessly. And In Italy we haven’t enough recycling companies for it. We have to bring it abroad, consuming petrol again.
On the contrary glass is endlessly recyclable and also reusable, so it means that reusing it reduces a lot its environmental impact!
Does really tetra pak pollute less? I read some news about the fact that Tetra Pak is reducing the amount of aluminium and plastic in cartons, but this means that they long contribute to carbon emissions.

What’s more, I want to add that, in order to say that a “hybrid” product like this is green – as this article shows –, someone calculates also the energy amount that derives from incineration, heck!
So what about the micro-nano-particles released in this phase, that could be dangerous for environment and health?

Io continuo a restare perplessa.
Fatemi cambiare idea, sarà premiato chi ci riesce!
So why to replace glass with tetra pak for organic products indeed? Maybe have we to reflect more about the disposal of some materials?
Please tell me if I’m wrong. I continue to be puzzled. If you have more infos, please tell me in comments or via email (you can find it in my profile).
Please help me to change my opinion, and the one who will succeed will be awarded!

SOS Recycle - Lacci, elastici e affini / twist ties, rubber bands and similar

This blog post is due to Giovanna, our blogger friend who recently is fronting a not so easy challenge with herself. Her resolute mood, ready to solve any doubt or unexpected thing, often takes her to ask herself some complicated questions. So this is the second time that a SOS Recycle blog post is dedicated to her – the first was that one on the fitness mats –.

Well, since a long time she asked me how to recycle the twist ties used for the freezer sachets and I must admit that I was tempted to escape from this “sword of Damocles” on my head more times.
But it’s not for this reason I neglected my blog, I have to specify!
It was my fault indeed that I offered myself as a human SOS pole for recycling! So roll up my sleeves and try to answer to Gio.

The answer is: the twist ties for freezing aren’t properly recyclable...
… Unless you are able to separate the plastic from the metallic wire inside. This one could be collected with metal waste to recycle at home or at HWRC. While plastic that wraps the metallic wire can be made of PVC, or rather of PE or PP, so it could be recycled with plastic, but if you have any doubt you have to throw it away.

But I feel like to suggest something more.
In the meantime I suggest to avoid plastic bags for freezing, and in place of those use stiff boxes, like we do here at home, also to freeze bread.
But if you prefer sachets, there are compostable ones, made of bioplastics, in whose packs there are paper and metal twist ties. So you can compost the paper too.

I can’t deny that also at home, before discovering these novelties, I cumulated lots of twist ties that until they are broken I used and reused. I use them not only for bags but also to hold tight the electric wires or to hold some twigs of some plants in my garden.
So they are all stores in a box (recycled), together with rubber bands we find unfortunately everywhere as we buy bunches of vegetables.

The way to preserve them from landfill is the same. The rubber of bands can be natural or synthetic, so I suggest to store them. They will be very useful for a lot of things: to roll sheets, to keep pasta packs closed, to hold strings or tags on a jar, as I did.

Come queste persone:
And I discovered that many people use rubber bands for playing or to create some special jewellery. Look here:

Finally who has a bit of creativity do his best! And you, Gio, go on to put me on the spot, as I enjoy it a lot! LOL

As I promised, I’m coming back with superhero clothes to solve people’s problems! LOL
Of course, I’m joking!!!
Unfortunately superheroes don’t exist and all the problems can’t be solved in the best way.
But each of us can be a hero in such a way and avoid certain situations.
Speaking about waste, as in all the other SOS Recycle blog posts, I believe that everyone can do his part, avoiding waste.

But there’s something we can’t avoid. Even more we are obliged by law to produce and pretend them, each time we buy something.
I’m speaking about cash register receipts.
And since we are on winter sales, it happens that a lot of receipts accumulate in your wallet.

Invece no.
Si tratta di carta termica.
As many of you, I was previously deceived from their apparently usual aspect too. And as many of you, I fell in the mistake to recycle receipts with paper.
But there’s paper & paper!
Did it happen to you that, storing an old cash register receipt, after a long time it appeared erased?
Well, in my naivety I thought that it would be some special ink that erases itself by time. And I thought that paper was a normal coated one. But I was wrong.
It was thermal paper.

I discovered this thing thanks to my dear Alessia who wrote me, asking where to throw cash register receipts. I knew the existence of thermal and chemical paper, but I imagined that its use was delimited to fax or to carbonless paper which is in registers and notes for taxes.

But the cash register paper too is a thermal one, because types we see printed are thermally fixed on paper by needles. This paper takes a different colour with hot temperature. It is easy to recognize, because it is very smooth at touch and has different tones of colour on each side.
In short, you can’t recycle this paper.
And so for chemical paper for fax, carbonless paper, carbon paper, and all paper with a different kind of print. You must throw it in the normal waste. Many guides or website of local waste services say the same. I checked it by mailing to my local waste service. And had the confirmation.

But not all the cash register receipts are printed on thermal paper. If you have some doubts, please don’t recycle.

We didn’t want to make waste, we are forced to make it!
I only hope that in the future the paper manufacturers will study a more green thermal paper.
Something is yet changing: some foreign websites are selling some thermal recycled paper for POS or cash registers and/or some free chlorine ones.

Insomma, alla fine, è sempre meglio… risparmiare!
To sum up, at last, it is even better to... save money!

SOS Recycle: etichette di carta sugli imballaggi da riciclare / paper labels on items to recycle

So here we are at the first blogpost for the very new column SOS Recycle. I’ll try to answer to the question posted from Sibia of the Orsomichele blog.
She asked me in a previous comment: “But plastic bags with paper labels glued on are recyclable”?

Well, this is a thing I asked myself a lot of times, even though, in theory, I was aware of the recycling phases of packaging. I always behaved in this way: I always eliminated and recycled paper labels whenever possible.
But my actions were driven more by instinct than by scientific certainties. This because I even knew that materials must be thrown in recycling bins as much pure as possible.

And I didn’t mistake. In facts I read here that the efficiency of a recycling process becomes compromised and slowed down by the presence of stranger materials among the materials to recycle.

This is also true as regards eventual metal parts that you can find on glass and plastic. As regards paper, the problem is minor because paper is a material less resistant to washings.

In the case of plastic packaging in the video that you can check out at the COREPLA site – the National Consortium for Recovery and Recycle of Plastic Packaging – you can well see that during recycling phases plastic is subjected to treatments of sift and washing many times.

So the problem of paper labels could be at most ignored.
Anyway, I suggest to eliminate them and, instead, to be careful to the kind of plastic of the packaging to recycle. If you have any other doubt ask me, but the COREPLA website is full of suggestions and helps!

Allora, al prossimo SOS Recycle!
So, see you next SOS Recycle time!
