Finally, it’s the right time to dedicate to my hobbies! As you know, among many, the one that keeps my mind on is always “upcycling”, a kind of advanced recycling, where all the scraps are recovered and creatively reworked.
It could happen to have at hand something to throw away, because not recyclable. If it has special colours, shapes, thicknesses or materials, then I immediately think to a new use for it, in a new form. If the idea does not immediately jump out of the hat, or I have not enough time to realize it, I reserve to these materials a small corner in my closet, waiting for creative recycling.

Cosa farne?
For many years I kept my working agendas, until I decided to eliminate them: it was now a no longer useful archive. I tried to recycle all the paper as possible, including the cardboard covers. But, because of the complexity of the materials, I couldn’t recycle a few covers, so I store them away. Among them a nice soft red cover dated 2009, consisting of cardboard, a plastic-coated paper, padded with polyurethane that is normally welded to the other parts, so that they are not separable. What to do?

I have long wanted a new cover for my tablet, one more in tune with summer than the one I bought a long ago at Matrioska... and I wanted to realize it with recycled materials. The red cover was proved suitable for the purpose because of the same size of my 7” tablet. Moreover, an old white and red flowered stretch cotton t-shirt came soon back useful. I kept it stored because it was as a gift from my mom and now unused because damaged in some parts. In addition, the red elastic tissues that adorned the edges of the t-shirts were perfect for the job that I’m going here to explain with a photo tutorial.

Ecco l’occorrente / Here’s what you need:
  • copertina cartonata imbottita di un’agenda da riciclare / padded cardboard cover agenda to recycle;
  • T-shirt da riciclare in tessuto elasticizzato / stretch fabric T-shirts to recycle;
  • elastici da riciclo / elastic tissues to recycle;
  • cartoncino un po’ spesso sempre recuperato / recovered thick board;
  • colla vinilica e un pennello per stenderla / glue and a brush to spread it;
  • nastro adesivo, cucitrice, ago e filo / adhesive tape, stapler, needle and thread;
  • eventuale nastro biadesivo forte (tipo quello per moquette) / any strong double-sided tape (like the one for carpets);
  • 2 nastri e 2 bottoni di dimensioni diverse / 2 ribbons and 2 buttons of different sizes.

I started by coating the outside of the front cover with the fabric of the shirt, cut to size larger than one centimeter along all the edges of the cover and bonded well, spreading it to avoid wrinkles.

2) Ho ripiegato e incollato internamente il tessuto avanzato sui bordi. Ho lasciato asciugare.
I folded and glued inside the advanced fabric edges. I let it dry.

I cut the cardboard slightly smaller size of the cover closed, enough to cover the edges of the fabric folded previously. I cut the t-shirt’s red elastics, placing them in the four corners of the board and secure with removable tape. Then I folded on the other side of the board and I stapled them well to end (they do not have to be slow). I doubled, then the elastic bands on the four corners, in the same way.

I coated the board always by glueing on the fabric, both to create a bit of thickness and to finish better the inside of the cover. Also for this I folded the flaps under the board. Same work, covered by fabric but without elastics, should be done on the opposite side, with another board a bit wider, able to cover the other inner side of the cover and the inside of the back.
For this side, on the cloth piece I had previously hand-sewed pocket that is useful to me to contain an antistatic cleaning screen cloth (as option!).

After the two coated boards had dried, I glued them inside the inner, making sure that the longer one had a strip of fabric that had to be covered with the other board.
You should pay attention to this action. In fact, the board inside with the rubber bands, which will hold the tablet, must be pasted perfectly. As reinforcement a double-sided tape for carpet can be used, combined with glue.

After waiting for everything dried, I sewed in the middle of the back cover a big ribbon. At one end of it I created with the same type of elastics a buttonhole, while on the other I attacked the big button. Then, on the back cover, on this ribbon I sewed another one which was narrower but longer, equipping the ends of it a buttonhole and button, as in the first.
The length of these two tapes, should ensure a perfect closing of the cover horizontally and vertically, so that if the tablet accidentally come out from the elastic bands, however it will not come out from its protective cover.

I tested the cover during this first week and are very satisfied, because, despite the heat of these days, the tightness of the glue is perfect. Maybe in the future I will have to replace the two ribbons with two elastic straps, because the ribbons I have chosen can loose tightness in long terms.
However, isn’t a good idea? I got a nice cover at no cost and with almost entirely recycled materials!!! ;)

È nata la… “Casetta sul Terrazzo”!!! / It was born the... “Cottage on the Patio”!

I usually like to talk to you about what's happening in my garden, which is the location of my daily observation of nature, although in reality it is just a microcosm.
Instead, soon I'll talk about what is happening in another outdoor space, this time not a garden but a patio, yes, a patio above a particular building and above the patio there is... a cottage!!!

The “Cottage on the Patio” is a space for creative reuse workshops run by ManiTese Cooperative of which, you know, I am a volunteer since many years.
It was finally opened last Sunday, during a three days event dedicated to the inauguration of the ReDiVita Association’s Tree House area.

The thing I like most about this space is that it is located in a vacant building, semi-abandoned and later recovered, a former electronics store on three floors, in 32 via della Circonvallazione Occidentale in Rimini. Who attended for years the charity shop of Mani Tese Rimini, well remembers these windows always closed...
It was in the air that this place had to go back to live from now on, becoming a stable reference point for creative people who have in their hearts the passion for reuse and environmental sustainability.

Last Sunday, after so much effort to renovate these a bit abandoned rooms, Mani Tese opened the doors of the portion of the building, the “Cottage”, in which many re-use workshops for both children and adults will take place during the next months.
In the morning on the patio, set up by the excellent Manolo Benvenuti – known throughout Europe as an innovative reuse-designer – there was entertainment for children by Le Pu-Pazze Society, a funny theater with puppets made by wasted fabrics and materials.
In the afternoon we set up a small workshop for children dedicated to creating pinwheels, always with reuse material (in this case paper from Easter eggs, corks, sticks, cardboard).

Veniteci a trovare!!!
From June the program will start with almost a seaside theme workshop that will alternate on the patio (or cottage, depending on the weather), while in September, the same Cottage will host a Permanent Workshop of recycled materials.
I will be there on at least two occasions and will manage the laboratories of the children, along with other Mani Tese volunteers. The Cottage on the Patio will be a nice relaxing place to take a little break from the first summer sun and to have fun with creativity! Come and visit us!

Hey birds, do you know where's the cold?

How about you this winter a little crazy? Heavy rainstorms and long gray days without cold but with so much humidity. The rain has caused so much damage throughout Italy and beyond. We expected a more conventional winter, here in Romagna, where we used a few years ago to have a few days of heavy snowfall, even on the coast. A little snow was seen but the walls of my house are devoured by wet stains that we will somehow solve. But this is another story. Meanwhile, out in the garden with these mild temperatures, you can already see the first violets and some daisies. Trees began to sprout and the birds are already much more noisy! And I want to talk about them!

Usually, as you may have already read about this blog in many posts, we always tried to give some hospitality to our little friends with feathers, giving them a bit of food during the colder months. Also this year we have not failed to leave crumbs around sweets, fresh or dried fruit and a special food bought for both granivorous and insectivores.

And since the first day of this month I had to organize once again a workshop for kids and their dad, as a volunteer of Mani Tese and in collaboration with the Families’ Centre, I thought it would be nice to build with them feeders for birds with recycled materials, just knowing that the days at the turn of January and February are (usually) colder ones.

In fact it was not just that, but the workshop was done and participants were happy to take home a more or less complex feeder made by their hands, especially dads who have been really busy putting their inventiveness! I do not know if they will have used them really...

But I show you the particular model that I created – other models were more or less inspired others seen on the web – with these materials: tetrapak, plastic bottle, fabric, plastic tray, polystyrene tray and metal edges of the cocoa boxes.

The idea came really to me seeing a feeder sold on the market but it was not made with recycled materials. When my companion and me saw it in a catalog we immediately associate the image to the form of drinks cartons and from there the step to realize was quite short.

With this I would like to make it clear that those who often think they are not good enough in manual jobs or enough “creative”, can practice themselves looking at what is around. If you want it, before getting groped to buy it, try to imagine if you can reproduce it in some way with materials that your waste bin can easily provide. Our plastic, paper and often unrecycling bins may be true mines! This is what we tried to convey to the parents of these children and I think that we have succeeded, or at least hope to!!!

Upcycling Christmas 2013

In particolare

***

Uhm, yes, a little out of time as usual! I wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas with this picture.
They are my experiments for an upcycling workshop of Mani Tese for children – in collaboration with the Center for Families of Rimini – which was held on December 7.
The theme was, of course, Christmas and the goal was to recycle as much as possible of food packaging accumulated on these days. So, you can see above light-puppets made with the little bottles of lactic ferments, angels with a soul made of PET bottles and wings with trays of pastries, decorations made of cardboard tubes or caps with wrapping paper, trees made with chips wraps or plastic containers of eggs and, finally, the characters of the nativity scene or reindeers made with cork, fabric, toothpicks, metal caps, polystyrene and cotton buds.
Put here the tutorial for each one would be too long, however, they are very simple, just put in action creativity and skill.
In addition, some of these ideas are inspired by images seen on the web. Particularly

for the crib: http://creamamma.blogspot.it/2012/11/dentro-il-calendario-dellavvento-6.html

for the reindeer, more or less: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx1iEd_Siww
for cardboard tube decorations: http://michellesjournalcorner.blogspot.it/2009/04/craft-coardboard-stars-from-toilet.html
for trees with chips wraps: http://mamma.pourfemme.it/foto/lavoretti-di-natale-per-lasilo-nido_2635_14.html
for the angel, probably an unaware mixture of two creations, one of my friend Bruna and that of my friend Claudia: http://pollon72.blogspot.it/2010/11/angioletto-con-bottiglia-e-tappi-di.html

The rest belongs from my invention. However, we are still on holidays, there is still some free time and ... who do not have the recycling full of packaging which can be turned into decorations? The magic of Christmas can continue even after Christmas itself, so let's move the imagination and ... have wonderful holidays!

Felice Eco-Vigilia / Happy Green Christmas Eve

Here we are, it's almost Christmas! I don't know if for you, but it's one of the best holidays for me!
It's because it reminds when I was a child: I built the Nativity scene, joined the chorus at the church and spent all my money to buy gifts for my family. It was a special atmosphere, sweetened by Christmas music spread in the air all over the town, and by being at table with all the members of the family playing games and enjoying the time!

But today it is so hard to live the same emotions. Manu things are changed. The childhood illusions are disappeared by everyday issues, stressed by consummerism or by job that is too much or totally missing! Human relationships are even more in tension, even in family for misunderstandings and money or health problems...

But don't lose yourself, Christmas is really the time to stop and think, to understand what is really needed or not, to make clearer lots of things, to try to enjoy the good things that we miss in the everyday life.

Yes, it's true, I'm still a baby in my heart and this year, that was so hard for me, I wanted to miss this unhappy vortex so i committed in lots of things: Christmas workshops for children, volunteering, and a special weekend with lot of music and friendship.

So, starting from this last one, I just want to suggest you this event you can join this night, simply watching TV on channel Rai Due. It's the Christmas traditional Concert, I attended two weeks ago. A wonderful show, with artist from very part of the world - among these my favourited Dolores O'Riordan and Elisa - and charity intentions. Don't miss, it makes your heart warm!

A presto!!!
So, this is my way to wish you a merry Christmas Eve. And I live you some pictures of the b&b where i stayed fot that unforgettable weekend. A special place, where recycling and creativity are everywhere! :-)
See you soon!!!

Con l’anima musicale al polso… / With a musical soul around the wrist ...

There are those who a musical soul is in their heart... It’s around the wrist for me! I'll tell you why...

You know that, inspired by my favorite band, the Cranberries, at the age of 22 I decided to buy my first guitar? Well, my level of musical technique, since then, has remained that! :D
Yes, there I made many attempts approaching to music.
From eight to twelve I was a member of the choir in my parish, coming to sing the Händel's Hallelujah as a soprano – I also have the certificate! –, but then the choir director changed and after I left because the next preferred to play more modern songs. At 13 I tried to go to music school to play the piano – my father wanted me to play the violin ! –, but the solfeggio bored me deeply and then I abandoned after less than a month and I contented myself strumming a few tunes learned in school on the melodica...
But I continued to love music! At 18 my brother played as dj at parties and on the radio and then the dance was my soundtrack of the 80s , then I fossilized in Italian songwriters – such as Venditti –, after which the turning point came...
My little sister – 8 years younger than me – took me to see a concert by The Queen drummer – of which she was a fierce fan –, Roger Taylor, and for the miraculous vision I came to rock ...
So I couldn't spend the evening without listening to the legendary Roman radio station, Radio Rock, going every day through new sensational discoveries.
It was at that time that through the radio and through the videos of Videomusic and Magic TV – do you remember them? –, I fell in love with indie band The Cranberries ... we are talking about the 1994 ...
Now it seems a century has passed, even if they are only twenty years, but the group changed a lot of my life, making me want to resume playing and singing, putting me in contact with hundreds of people around the world and especially making me meet the love of my life!
Well, from time to time now I pick up the guitar and strum a little till my fingers, always remained rigid, hurt.
Every now and then ... "tin!" a string brokes ... well, am I the one that recycles everything?
Then this bracelet is just a guitar string, in which I put metal and stone beads, from a destroyed necklace and a shirt. Wear it reminds me that I have a story and a soul music too, and ... a little sister who has pursued her dream in London! I'ts to her that I dedicate this post! ;)

La mia prima volta… / My first time…

Have you misunderstood? Sure! Yesterday was my first time, my first experience with the sewing machine...!
Yes, and it was great fun, especially because I ventured into a workshop for re-use!
What dragged me into this great challenge was the overwhelming enthusiasm of creative ReeDoHub, a cooperative founded in Rimini in 2012, which “promotes projects for sustainable and self-produced fashion and design, with a work that is both by brain and hands, a work that is value and existential need” (see also this my old post).

These are the two results that have come out of my hands. Even now I’m still incredulous. Yes, ok , they are not perfect, but it is so much for someone like me who barely knew some how to sew button by hand or improvise some “dress” to mask... The ones you see in the two photos are a travel pillow and a bottle/cutlery holder, taken from one of my old worn pants.

The idea of this wonderful creative dressmaking workshop was developed by ReeDo – and managed by the great super creative Cristiana Curreli – as part of the Vintage Fair in Forlì, an event that was held last weekend and drew many visitors. A praise to the organization that ensured not only the presence of very interesting stands, but also a theme-based scenario, and more of an internal event, including live music vintage , fashion competitions, workshops – precisely – and parades of strictly vintage clothing or – as the same ReeDo proposed – the reuse of used or discarded fabrics for truly spectacular creations.

In this slideshow I leave you some pictures taken from this event, as well.

But coming back to me, what was the way I behaved with the sewing machine? Inhibited, perhaps first by difficulty inserting the basting thread through the needle eye – and yet I see clearly! –, the approach was like approaching a UFO, just an unidentified object! Of how to use the sewing machine I had only a vague record of when as a child I witnessed the work that my grandmother did. The hardest part was to fix in mind the path the thread had to do from the spool to the needle – which among other things, they said, it’s different from machine to machine – but then it went more or less smoothly and I enjoyed it, so that to aim to sew two object, not a single one!
I must say that sewing machine is almost relaxing and then it opened a world of possibilities that before I had to hold due to my disability in sewing. So I’m very nearly to do a little thought about buying it...
My partner – who “had to” put up with three hours of observation of the workshop, but I think he enjoyed it as well – has already claimed to have found the gift from me for Christmas! ;)

Ps: At last I would like to thank the staff of Reedo for giving me this wonderful opportunity and I hope that there will be new meetings in the future to create beautiful things together!

Il Ricigufo / The Reowl

Those of you who also follow me on my personal profile on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram *, already know, the 'Reowl', my mythical animal, made with tetrapak, fabric and other materials, which in last October was a great success, among children and adults who participated in the workshop of Mani Tese for the 'families' month' in Cavour square at Rimini.

If some friends, seeing this pic, mistook him for a giant totem pole in my garden, the children put this figure in their mind where they mingled it with their wildest imagination, and their hands were able to multiply it in a army of strange colored owls and little owls, each one different. So everybody went away happy with their fantastic creation ...

I never thought to create something that shaken up such a consensus among the young ...

You know very well that I do not like tetrapak, this monster created to replace the glass, which, okay, will have its advantages in terms of weight and then transport and economy, but with all the tricks used to get from its disposal new materials, it's not so eco-friendly to me ... But that's another story and if you want I'll tell you more on that later.

Comunque qualcuna di queste scatole infernali capitano anche a me in casa ogni tanto.
However, some of these infernal boxes finish at home every now and then.

I found a carton of orange juice this time. It must be stated that for this work, the larger the tetrapak box is, the better it is, although nice results are obtained also from those ones a bit 'smaller.

So you need also the fabric – mine left from an old worn pants – that must be cut in a zig zag pattern. The cardboard should be washed and squashed to practice cuts following a precise shape and then it must given back its shape, folding it in some points (it's difficult to say how).

Finally with the glue cover the carton, color with markers covering the nakedness, create the 'big face' of the Owl with a large cap, little caps, buttons and other small items saved from waste in fantasy. For example, the beak of my owl was a piece of an old earring ...

So, here is a fun experience for children developing their imagination and dexterity, but also that one of adults, which should help children to cut the cardboard with scissors and bend it. Then it may be a game or a simple decoration, because the owls are currently so fashionable! ;-)
All this to tell you that sometimes you just find what you need at home, observing it, handling it, to discover hidden forms and new uses, then the rest comes by itself.

L’abat-jour che voleva essere ‘verde’ / The table lamp that wanted to be ‘green’

There was a time when a table lamp stayed in a little room in a holiday home at the seaside.
As all the objects in a holiday home, where furniture is essential, this was only a little simple table lamp that goes back to ’80s, with a round white painted metallic base, a hose that held the bulb and a hemispheric lampshade even in white painted metal.

The table lamp was switched on all night long, doing its job, on a bedside, lighting up old pages of detective stories books or crossword magazines, during those late summer evenings when heat doesn’t make the rest easier. It was an useful object, we cannot deny, but there was a little fault: if you absently touched the lampshade for redirecting light – ouch –, you had to retract the hand because it was hot, and curse on the irresponsable designer! So the table lamp proved shame for sure and dreamed of a more happy and green life!

But one day the old bulb was substituted by a new greener one and a good heart who loved environment and this great change, wanted to make the table lamp a greener one. But we must say that the already blamed designer hasn’t been so forward-looking and the new energy saving lamps won’t fit in the lampshade. So the ‘good heart’, who was used to be inspired by a creative brain, proved to separate the lampshade from the hose cutting the electrical wire. Luckily – or not, it depends from the point of view –, a new wire was there standing by, waiting for a new use: it survived to a bad crash of another table lamp, when the glass lampshade was broken in pieces.
So, as the sum of 1+1 is 2, from the mix of the two lamps a new one was born and this one it could be proud to be greener! Now it burned less, but it missed a lampshader that could shield the light and protect the lamp from accidental hits.

So, after searching for a long time, one bright day, in that thoughtful brain belonging to the good heart, a lamp suddenly switched on, a new idea now! The transparent polypropylene support of a chocolate Easter egg, even waiting for a new use, ended to become the new lampshade, with a little creative touch, a green decoration made with colored scraps of glossy sticker sheets used for signage.

Now the table lamp could feel greener than ever, so it went on to enlighten happy evenings with its green nuanced light. Thus it lived happily for a long long time!

Ricettario dei dolci al profumo di… cioccolato! / Cakes recipe holder with a scent of … chocolate!

As promised, I’m here to explain some of my upcycling “creations”. They are not difficult works to do but simple things, often inspired by the shape of the recovered material, sometimes by the type of material, more rarely – as the subject of this post – ... inspired by its scent!

In what was supposed to be a nice weekend with friends and my favorite music – now dating back to last October – and was instead a forced weekend at home, I found myself looking for something to do to relieve the emptiness and melancholy. Often when you are alone at home and some dark thoughts occupy your mind, the best thing to do is to dedicate yourself to something cheerful and satisfying. Sometimes you end up opening the pantry and look for something sweet. In that case, I went there very close but I didn’t find myself drowning my thoughts in chocolate, but – always in the kitchen – I felt the intense perfume that came from an abandoned box of empty cocoa.

The thought flew straight to my partner who was there where I had to be and that was in charge of abandonment, not mine but of the empty box, because he is a large consumer of cocoa for breakfast, the one soluble in milk. Fortunately, the box itself was fairly harmless, because of cardboard and easy to recycle – the one of the famous brand of the purple cow* –, but by opening the lid, I smell the scent of cocoa and thought “a shame to throw it”!

Then it occurred to me that I could make a nice surprise for my love, whose passion is always to cook and often makes sweet surprises to me.
So in addition to the empty box of cocoa, I retrieved colorful cards for origami that I had bought long ago at the
children's flea market – which is held in the summer in Rimini Piazza Cavour and which I talked about in this post – and then double-sided tape and scissors and the image of a cupcake imprinted on cardboard, which accompanied a beautiful box of chocolate eggs had a gift some time ago.

After initially measured how much paper to use to coat the box well – it’s always better to see if it is sufficient, otherwise you need to make a collage – I studied the points where to bend it and began to settle over the strips of double-sided adhesive on which I would patiently glue the paper, trying to take advantage of the paper color pattern. Obviously at some points paper advanced, so I cut away it with scissors, being careful not to damage the cardboard.
The cupcake was just “the icing on the cake”, in short, a decoration that can be done in any other way and material.

Be’ noi qui lo abbiamo sperimentato diverse volte.
The square interior of this recipe holder is well suited to accommodate handwritten or printed cards with your favorite recipes to keep in hand. Otherwise you can save even simple magazine clippings. Nowadays – it is true – it’s easier to consult recipes on the web, but have you ever been annoyed having to wash your hands, dirt of flour or butter every step, having to click ot tap on the recipe in question? Well here we have experienced it several times. Usually we prefer to write recipes from blogs, or refer to classic books or cooking magazines ...

In the end, what I have presented is a simple work, but the thing that sets it apart is always that intense aroma of cocoa that persists in the box and that makes you just wanna sweets ...
That day he was so pleased with the surprise and on his return melancholy was changed in smile. The recipe holder now makes its display on the cabinet where my “house chef” has his magazines and his cookbooks, now inseparable ...

* I would like to specify that this brand of cocoa is normally purchased when on the shelf we cannot find of organic fair-trade cocoa, the packaging of which, however, has several problems of disposal ... In short, there are no half measures!
