È nata la… “Casetta sul Terrazzo”!!! / It was born the... “Cottage on the Patio”!

I usually like to talk to you about what's happening in my garden, which is the location of my daily observation of nature, although in reality it is just a microcosm.
Instead, soon I'll talk about what is happening in another outdoor space, this time not a garden but a patio, yes, a patio above a particular building and above the patio there is... a cottage!!!

The “Cottage on the Patio” is a space for creative reuse workshops run by ManiTese Cooperative of which, you know, I am a volunteer since many years.
It was finally opened last Sunday, during a three days event dedicated to the inauguration of the ReDiVita Association’s Tree House area.

The thing I like most about this space is that it is located in a vacant building, semi-abandoned and later recovered, a former electronics store on three floors, in 32 via della Circonvallazione Occidentale in Rimini. Who attended for years the charity shop of Mani Tese Rimini, well remembers these windows always closed...
It was in the air that this place had to go back to live from now on, becoming a stable reference point for creative people who have in their hearts the passion for reuse and environmental sustainability.

Last Sunday, after so much effort to renovate these a bit abandoned rooms, Mani Tese opened the doors of the portion of the building, the “Cottage”, in which many re-use workshops for both children and adults will take place during the next months.
In the morning on the patio, set up by the excellent Manolo Benvenuti – known throughout Europe as an innovative reuse-designer – there was entertainment for children by Le Pu-Pazze Society, a funny theater with puppets made by wasted fabrics and materials.
In the afternoon we set up a small workshop for children dedicated to creating pinwheels, always with reuse material (in this case paper from Easter eggs, corks, sticks, cardboard).

Veniteci a trovare!!!
From June the program will start with almost a seaside theme workshop that will alternate on the patio (or cottage, depending on the weather), while in September, the same Cottage will host a Permanent Workshop of recycled materials.
I will be there on at least two occasions and will manage the laboratories of the children, along with other Mani Tese volunteers. The Cottage on the Patio will be a nice relaxing place to take a little break from the first summer sun and to have fun with creativity! Come and visit us!

Vacanze a Km (quasi) 0… / About zero distance-holidays… # 1

Così è capitato a noi.
The countdown to the end of August is started.
As many newspaper and TV news said, for the credit crunch and the lack of spare time, many people had to be content for short holidays and travels.
So to us. We shouldn’t really complain about it, we have the seaside very near our home. But sometimes we need to go away for breathing new air. You can’t imagine as disturbing is to live in a so crowded place in summer!

So, this time we decided where to go, choosing a destination without long travels and complicated paths. We chose among the various tourism offers of our region, Emilia Romagna. It is really surprising to discover how many places, habitats, landscapes and climates this land offers!
As example take the Romagna seaside: beyond the big beaches there is an amazing hinterland, rich of history and traditions, gastronomical ones included. And, behind the hills of Romagna, the green mountains of the Apennines between Tuscany and Romagna raise. There you can find biodiversity and breathtaking views both in summer and winter.

It was here that, taking the map, we pointed the finger. Precisely on Bagno di Romagna (FC province), a town placed in the East edge of the National Park of the Casentino Forests. It is the destination of many tourists searching for hot spring in a very green location.
However, what made us choose for this destination wasn’t the presence of spas, nor the nearness of the park – we already visited it many times –. It was the nearness to Rimini that convinced us, about 90 Km, if you drive on motorways, nothing compared to the kilometres along you normally drive on holidays! Then a series of articles on local newspaper and websites, telling about Bagno di Romagna as “the Town of Gnomes”, made us curious as well.
Gnomes are creatures from the woods – if you believe or not – and so the presence of fairy wood is the feature of the place!

So we quickly made the baggage, after having decided a place where to sleep. At first we thought to camp, then we decided for sleeping in a farm holidays, as the one camping was closed – what a pity! –. Many farms holidays give the possibility to camp with a camper or a tent. But we chose to sleep comfortably in a room. The chosen farm holidays was this, a marvellous place, on the top of a mountain passage, and what’s more is that the structure is approved and controlled by AIAB (Italian Organic Farm Association) and ICEA (Institute for Ethical and Environment Certification).

Although Bagno di Romagna is easily attainable by bus from the main chief towns in Romagna (Rimini, Forlì, Cesena), we decided to go there by our little own car, to have a vehicle at hand to go from the farm to the town. But we used car few times, only to maximize the time available.

The three days flew in less then no time.

Primo giorno: sopralluogo a Bagno.
First day: inspection at Bagno. A very lovely town, embedded in a green valley, with some buildings of historical and artistic value (the Santa Maria Assunta Basilica, the Palace of the Captain) and typical very accurate lanes, houses with flowered windows and inviting little shops. It’s not a case that Bagno di Romagna is “Orange Flag” awarded – an Italian Touring Club Award – among many Italian municipalities. The centre is crossed by the Savio River, along which a park runs – our picnic oasis – and also spas, excellence places, perhaps not for our pockets!
But we took advantage on the dinner in the farm holidays. Very good homemade potato tortelli, as the local tradition says and delicious flavours from the wood… be quite, no game for food to us!

The evening passed to catch shooting stars, and they were not slow to light up the very black sky… a sky that wasn’t remembered so long by me! After wishes expressed, we went to the room… but blimey! We risked to pass the night out!
Be careful, if you are going to attend these places, you must know that it’s better to respect their timetable!!!

Pedalando lentamente a... Ferrara / Riding slowly in... Ferrara

Allora siete al mare o in montagna? Posti affollati, vero?
So where are you? At the seaside or over the mountains? Crowded places, aren’t they?
If it happens to you – as me too – that you can’t plan a real holiday and you can only go out for the weekend, it would be better to choose nearer and less popular destinations. Don’t you agree?
Well, consider to have a trip toward unknown place that stays just around the corner.

It is the case of our last weekend out at Ferrara.
The destination was really decided for a special event we wouldn’t have missed: the concert of the
Kings of Convenience, a Norwegian band who gave us wonderful ballads. The gig would be played in the magnificent scenery of the Estensi’s Castle of Ferrara, an architectural jewel embedded in the old town, that many people told me as beautiful.

I never visited Ferrara before, so I had the full confirmation of those descriptions, first of all the one that belonged from my father, great estimator of arts. When I was teen, he brought the schoolchildren – he was a teacher – here and sent me a post-card that sounded as an invitation.

Ferrara is magic. The old town is a web of many lanes and squares, full of medieval and renaissance buildings. Each palace has an amazing story and if you try to close your eyes you can imagine the movement of the medieval dwellers with their gorgeous clothes. I can’t forget to mention the Palace of Diamanti, with its characteristic ashlars, among many less known other ones, which interiors are really surprising!

Magnifico!
But the great astonishment come at the sight of the wonderful Cathedral. With its decorations it is simply spectacular! Almost near there is the mentioned castle, massive and protected in its big moat, over which drawbridges and loophole are opened. Wonderful!

To sum up, I can’t tell you about everything, even for the risk to repeat adjectives as “magnificent”, “spectacular”, “wonderful”, “fantastic” and so on, al related to Ferrara. But I can suggest you the official tourism site of the city, where you can find all kinds of information, especially some interesting podcasts you can use as guides, during the visit.

As you can imagine, our way for organising the trip was eco-friendly. After having consulted the web, we decided to go there by train, spending less money for the not so long and pleasant travel, during which we had to do a quick stop to Ravenna.
We pointed to use mostly bike to visit the city, and we were very surprised to see that Ferrara is absolutely “the city of bikes”!!!

It was full of cycle routes for citizens and tourist indeed, and everybody really goes by bike!
Wow! I felt like I was on another planet! We had the chance to bring our own bikes with us, but we didn’t need it because there are lots of rent-a-bike points and there are public bikes too. So we were lucky, the bike-sharing service is called “C’entro anch’io”, the same we have in Rimini. We can use the bike key in more than a city and so we did, happy to go around the city without being stressed or tired.

We did take no buses and stayed for the night in a good and cheap B&B along the Po river, not far from the railway station. On Saturday we went by walk into the city centre, visiting the lanes, having lunch in a tavern and having a good organic ice-cream, about which I’ll tell you further. In the evening we went to sit in the square near the Castle, waiting the start of the concert.

Also the “Kings” appreciated so much the city, wondering to play in front of a so beautiful scenery. After the opening of the fantastic supporting band Ophelia Hope, the main band did their best: they played old and new melodies, in a first time in duo, then with the other musicians, in a very amusing performance, joking also with the public. I discovered that the duo from Bergen – perhaps unconsciously – are very green: they like bicycles – as you can notice in the “Cayman Island” song – and they love to stay quiet. In the first half hour of the concert they asked to the public for not taking photos. I liked it, I cannot tolerate flashes during a show!

So, with their music in our ears and riding bicycles, the following Sunday we went on to discover the city. Many historical and sacred buildings to visit, but this time we had some breaks, resting in parks, as a beautiful park with secular trees. I couldn’t resist to hug – I wasn’t so able to – a cedar of Lebanon and an oak. They almost scared me for their exaggerate dimensions!

In the afternoon we rode around the ancient walls. A walkway along them, totally in the green of the trees and in a tranquillity almost unusual for a big city. I founded only a fault: at a certain point of the walk, at a big distance, behind the trees, I saw a high chimney… this took me to be disappointed and suspicious but I went on to ride, trying to appreciate the green in all its nuances.

So, leaving bicycles at the start rack, walking newly along the centre streets, having another ice-cream and then going back to station, our downshifting weekend ended. We enjoyed arts, music, tastes and nature, being beside my beloved man. I needed all this things. With a bit of melancholy we leaved from Ferrara, with the idea to return in new occasions…

“if only they could see, if only they had been here

they would understand, how someone could have chosen

to go the length I’ve gone, to spend just one day riding

holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear”

Il primo "Ecopresepe" in Rimini / The first "Eco-Nativity Scene" in Rimini

The last flame of the Christmas comet tail enlightens us…
The Epiphany is leaving in our hearts – not only in children’s ones – a bit of melancholy. But if a little flame is burning until the end of the Season in you, here’s a post for you!

Here in Rimini, beyond the Christmas lights still on and decorations, there is a unusual thing that gives to the city a very unique look: the sand Nativity scenes, which are prepared on Rimini beach, from the centre of the city to the North. They are real artworks, real temporary monuments to the sacred Nativity scene. ‘Temporary’ because they don’t last, being made by sand.

It’s worth to spend an afternoon visiting them, even if there’s a crowd. Sand Nativity Scenes are fascinating and marvellous and they really take your breath away. Every year they are different and inspired to particular themes. But I want to leave you the way to discover it.

But this year, the 26th bath of Rimini, that always hosted the greatest and most visited sand Nativity scene – now moved near the port –, was the place for the first “Eco-Nativity scene”, to celebrate Christmas with ecology in mind.

“In time of crisis, we, artists, need to measure ourselves with the concept of recycle”.
With this words Alessandra Brunelli and Mirco Guidi introduce their creative path. The eco-artists were committed in the creation of a very original Native Scene, initially pointing to reuse as first materials “what we normally emit in the cicle of waste: paper, carton, fabrics, plastics, cans, etc…”
“But then, to not taking too much distance from the concept of traditional Nativity Scenes, we chose to use carton as main material. All the carton we use was from supermarkets garbage, it was arranged and painted with water colours. As regards characters’ clothes we used old fabric taken from industrial catalogues, while the floor tiles are store remnants.
All those ingredients made us able to create a scenery where Jesus’ Nativity history is mixed with impressions from Rimini city. We thought to the beach, the public square, the land and to a not mere graphic idea of the monuments of our city, expressed with a illustrated style which is elementary but, at the same time, ‘old fashioned’”.
Bravi!
And they were totally able to re-create the city in an impressive way, animating it with characters surely inspired to Fellini’s movies, with simple or rich garments and particular groups of figures. The Nativity is at the centre, nearest to the visitors and placed toward the floor tiles seaside, as to remember Jesus’s poor origins. Simple are also the materials of this scene, they are always surrounding us and we throw them away everyday. From these ones, something very nice and extraordinary could be created, and the two artists highly show us. Well done!

Above all the Nativity Scenes I admired during Christmas holidays – those one living, those one made by sand, those ones from craftworks and homemade – this one deserves a special mention and give us a lots of suggestions for next Christmas, where it could be nice to see everyone of us assigning a new importance to waste. So, to the next Christmas season!

Ingresso gratuito.

Sempre su AmbienteFestival ‘09 / About AmbienteFestival ’09 again

I start this post thanking all the people who tried to raise me, reading my notes of discouragement on what is happening these days in Rimini. Enthusiasm is coming again, believe me, and this happens thanks to you!

Last Saturday and Sunday, as if on purpose, Irish and me planned a hike in the land of the Delta of Po, as to cut off power from the stress of the week. They were two wonderful days and I take the chance to relax, forgetting bitter thoughts and newly finding me fond of nature. Even if coming back home I found a tense atmosphere, I found also a bit of mental balance to understand what are my limits and what instead are my qualities on which I must trust to feel consistent with myself.
Probably Mother Nature gave me the strength… during this short hike we had an incredible meeting with a deer who was having a ride in the Big Wood of Mesola! But I will tell you about this sooner!

Today I’m telling about pleasant discovering I did yesterday evening…
After going to the eco shop for a urgent shopping, and having noticed that was closed – we didn’t consider the new winter opening time – we decided not to waste time and fuel spent by car but to go visiting the centre of Rimini. In particular Cavour square which is the most animated place in the city, thanks to
AmbienteFestival.
On that time laboratory and commercial activities – which ones of
Ecomia – were ended. There weren’t special conferences, as those ones that start from today evening. But many expositions were still opened – and they are almost open every day until 10 p.m.–:

The “Waste Looking for Authors” exhibition: it is a show of artworks – many very ingenious – that have garbage as theme or as work materials. Some pictures impressed me so much… they show how the waste problems broke some people’s heart, provoking horror, discouragement, but also creativity and the will to transform waste in something new and nice. Not by chance many artists are from Campania! At this link – where I discovered that the connected competition will end the 30th November – you can see some pictures.

The show “Good Practises” where institutions, boards and private companies, who participate to the event, offer their information to make green your daily actions. To be mentioned the scenery entirely made with reuse materials (carpeting, iron, wood and carton), elaborated from artists and designers.

Composizioni fotografiche molto originali, devo dire!
The two shows “Riclick Preview: When Waste Becomes Resource” and “Suburban Vision”, two different ways to use photography as expression of what today happens under our eyes, in cities and out there. Photographic compositions were very original, I must say!

The ethic boutique “Re-arts” and the bookshop. A place where I absolutely must return! There you can buy accessories created by various artists and artisans, all made from recovered material: bags made by printed PVC sheets, rubber from tyres, t-shirts and shopping bags with a graphic by jailbirds, necklaces and belts made with clothes waste, seats, rings and brooches created from legos and computer keys. And what about the book selection… very rich and interesting!

The external show “The Home-Bike” by the association Dinamo Energia Creativa. Many funny and bizarre artworks, where bike is the constant element, the material or simply the inspiration.

• La mostra fotografica e video “I love Bio. Costruire consapevolmente” sulla bioedilizia realizzata recentemente.
The photo and video show “I love Organic. Conscious Building”about the green way to build, especially in the local area.

At last we visited the exposition “Italian Design for Sustainability”. New and old design objects, created for recycling materials like aluminium, glass, paper, plastic or created for saving energy like white goods with low consumes, LED lamps, electrical vehicles… The best thing in this place dedicated to design is a wall where you can find all kinds of innovative materials from recycle pre and post-consume. You can approach and touch them, understanding how they are made and imagine a new use.

Well, in a short time and a little space, we had the possibility to see that art, photography, design and architecture are fields that are more and more going toward environmental sustainability. A good challenge for that industries which aren’t able to review their old and polluting standards. A good adventure in transforming what we created of bad and harmful in something agreeable and useful, even for the simple ‘thinking’.

For my mind, thirsty of spurs for creativity, it was really a discovering. For my soul, searching for encouragements in doing everyday my best, it was a pacification.
Of course behind the stimuli and encouragements I found some weak points on which the organisation of a so great event will have to work for next editions. As we came back home, Irish and me, we talked about these, but I’ll tell to you on the blog when the event will end, so to reflect about it and possibly give suggestions to the people involved in the new arrangement.

Intanto presto altri aggiornamenti…
Ah, a proposito oggi è cominciato Ecomondo! ;)
In the meantime I’ll write soon new updates.
Ah, at proposal, today
Ecomondo began!

I mille volti della città di... Narni / The thousand faces of... Narni city

(“Ladies, Knights and all the people…”) so begins the ‘banno’ (announcement) that last Thursday opened our favourite medieval festival, the one we wait every year for returning to Narni, the magical town in the heart of Italy, in Umbria. A celebration that reaches out the culmination of the second Sunday in May, when the three ‘terzieri’ (different noun for ‘quarters’) of the city, Mezule, Fraporta and Santa Maria, are competing for the fateful silver Ring in the famous ‘Corsa all’Anello’, in our opinion, the most exciting historical tournament among those we could assist around Italy.

What surrounds the enthusiasm, commitment and jollity of the citizens of Narni – who are intent, throughout the year, in putting up a historical reconstruction as accurate and beautiful – is the scenario of a city that is heavily steeped in history with most valuable building structures from antiquity, the Roman bridge, the narrow alleys and the stone homes, the towers, the magnificent frescoed churches, the city gates, the castle, the mysterious underground ...

We are never tired of visiting that town and we are coming back again this year in the weekend of the race and then review dear friends known during the celebrations last years...
Narni is a city full of charm and surprises. It is full of thrill and during the year there are a great number of initiatives, continuing the main spring festival and also promoting other events, including music, theatre, art...

Let’s remember also that it is from Narni that the great writer CS Lewis took inspiration for creating the fantastic world of Narnia. For this reason the city, with many Italians schools and also worldwide, has promoted, many activities focused on the imaginary of the famous fantasy book, drawing attention to the curiosities and affinities that relate the same city to the beautiful scenery created by the author.

Around these activities the interest of citizens in their beloved territory has moved. Many initiatives have been thus linked to the protection of environment, which is at the risk to be as always compromised by human activity. One of these, begun several years ago, but recently promoted – as you can see from posted pictures –, is the waste doorstep collection.

Last year we were invited by our dear friends at their home, where they show as recycle is done in an exemplary way and on time. We have been positively impressed because it is nice to enjoy the beauty of a place, knowing that they try to protect the environment in this way too.

In fact, when there are events of so great extent – the Corsa all'Anello draws thousands of people even from abroad! – the risk of environmental impact is significant. Just look the road after the famous historical parade of the Saturday preceding the tournament: lots of people who flow in the streets, especially young people, do not tend to leave a very clean place...
We hope Narni will be well equipped to deal even with these problems.

And we, as tourists and lovers of this beautiful village, are committed to bring our bags back and recycle what we can, maybe bringing also a water bottle to fill with good water flowing from Narni fountains and reusable or biodegradable glasses...

If you plan to make a trip to those places – you are still in time to organize – whistle us up... maybe we will spend some hours of fun together! ;)

Thanks to Bruno for recycling infos

RIFIUTILE, Rimini, Aprile/Marzo 2009

March seems to be not only the nature awakening month, but also the month in which there are lots of happenings about environment saving!

Today, at the Province Centre of Rimini, in Bornaccini Square n.1, there will be the inauguration of Rifiutile, “Women laboratory of art from waste recovery”.
It’s a smart occurrence of meetings for “Enjoying creativity, using objects that differently would be trash!”.

In particolare:
• il 9, 11 e 13 marzo si terrà un laboratorio di scultura, giochi per bambini e idee libere;
• il 23, 25 e 27 marzo si lavorerà alla creazione di arredamento, lampade, soprammobili, mensole, sedie, specchi e posacenere;

There will be 9 dates that occur on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the second and fourth weeks of March and in the third one of April. In particular:
• On 9, 11 and 13 March there will be a laboratory for sculpture, kid’s toys and free ideas;

• On 20, 22 and 24 April, you’ll can create costumes, clothes, jewellery and accessories.

The event is organized by Mutoid Waste Company : “a group of recyclers able to reuse urban trash turning them from scraps to art”. Lots of material can be used: iron, plastic, rubber, glass fibre, aluminium, copper and brass. “A continue flow of mutation is the complement of the ideation and recovering of material itself, as long as the realization and the finishing of objects”.

Avete questi pomeriggi a disposizione?
Do you are free this evenings? What are you waiting? Give the start to creativity! And don’t worry if you are poor of materials! You can bring yours (if you are such a WALL•E like me) or thing will be furnished from the organization. They will assure that you could well use tools and will teach simple fusion techniques for every material.

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary 15-16 Aug 2008

:-D

The second last day in Valle di Non… it is Middle-August, bank holiday! On this celebration day weather brings a bad surprise: large grey clouds and rain here and there. What we can do? Moreover public transportations are halved and we can plan any trip with a eligible timetable. This time we need the help of the very gentle owners of the B&B that from the beginning were already available to accompany us if it had been necessary.
This time we cannot decline one of their kind lift to Cles, point of departure for various connections. But, since it rains, we decide to make a trip to Trento, a city that we had never visited before. We must go back to the south, but this doesn’t discourage us because there is the efficient railway line.
Designed times, we put ourselves on the road. Forty minute and we are in Trento, magnificent city! Now I’m not explaining here our whole tour, but worth saying that this city is colourful and full of history, with its many and sumptuous medieval palaces with frescoes outside, with its major roads that, crossing, give rise to extraordinary views! There is the magnificent Castle of Buonconsiglio which preserves finds of civilization here in Trentino valleys. There are balconies, gardens, and magnificent halls, as the Tower dell'Aquila bearing unique frescoes, depicting the months of the year. Unfortunately for the great crowds of tourists we cannot visit it, given that visits are by appointment, and then we reserve ourselves to come back!
We concentrate, instead, in the central square with the splendid Romanesque cathedral that recalls much more European cathedrals that the same tradition of Romanesque in Italy.
The day session is going to be sunny and hot, and then we walk for avenues and alleys observing every detail: the city is managed in a exemplary way and talking about ecology again, we see that it is equipped by ecological islands in some crossroads. Rubbish bins are rare, while those for recycling are very modern and they don’t bear nuisance to the aesthetic of the city at all. The lack of bins for generics waste is a nearly constant feature in all centres of Trentino… perhaps they almost wanted to invite the tourists to produce less waste and recycle! So much that I myself found uneasy to adapt at it: so I always brought waste with me in a bag in my backpack, then I recycled them when I encountered the different bins.
As it is the time of returning back, sky is dark and threatening a thunderstorm. Thus we return to the station to wait for the train. In the heart sadness is increasing, because tomorrow we go back home…

The next day – it seems almost joking with us – the sky is smooth and from the windows of the B&B landscapes stand out clear to our gaze… we have time to leave and since the bus left too soon our kind hosts recommends us that we can make one last quiet walk, because then she will accompany us at the station.
So we prepare our luggage and I sit to still immortalize some details of this beautiful place where we stayed during these days, just to document how we just can do to make the world civil and pleasant. The recycling includes organic fraction, there are composters in every garden in the town, so beautiful flowers on the balconies and some under-house allotments are full of trees of apple, figs, cherries - always taken in assault from birds - in short, a place that puts in the heart the joy of living! Except that, being in the summer, few… inhabitants are moving!
We do a nice walk on the hilly behind the town on a road that leads to a trail in the mountain, in woods. How many paths we left behind unexplored. We must absolutely come back!

So our holiday ends with a close embrace with the dear Daniela who brought us there and some little tears… we were so well!
Reflecting, the negative sides of an eco-like holiday are few and you can count on the tip of fingers: less freedom to move, this is sure, but at least we’ve made an almost zero environmental impact in this fabulous area of Trentino and we are proud of it!
We just have to return to everyday life and perhaps… what about a program for the next summer? :-D
