Chiusi per ferie? Macché! / Closed for holidays? Not at all!
Blog chiuso per ferie?
Macché! Magari!!!
Blog closed for holidays?
Not at all! Maybe!
Every day work engulfs me and destroys every ounce of strength to take some extra initiatives.
I survive, with the messed up bus schedules to go and come, with things to do that accumulate, with the heat, with the weariness of months that begins to be heard.
But there is something positive and good and I'll tell it to you as soon as I a "piece" will arrive at home completing a great work!
But I cannot anticipate anything, sorry!
Back at home, I'm grappling with a busy summer!
For some friends and relatives come to stay for a few days with us.
My first guests were very special friends who gave us a great company, then it was the turn of my family, especially my mom and sister.
When a guest walks away from home, whoever he is, always leaves a great emptiness inside me! It always happens with the members of my family I see very few times. Among hugs and kisses there are also some moments of discussion that then pass into the background compared to the joy of being together.
However, what isn't left empty, since my family was leaving, is the bin of rubbish...
It is not easy to maintain and communicate your eco-sustainable habits to guests!
And while the first (friends) behaved very well, the latter weren't so virtuous...
I must admit that my mom – of which I spoke well in a previous post – has a little-big problem: she buy so much and without thinking.
So these days I have had serious management problems of excess food and unwished food packaging who ended up in my not-recyclable garbage.
I'll tell you some details soon...
My little sister instead tried to be more careful and I was constantly bombarded with questions about where to throw this or that, making me realize that, indeed for some people, it is not easy to recognize certain materials to recycle well. It is even more difficult to keep in mind, before buying a thing, that a good part of what we are buying could be waste!
So my next goal is to work more and more in this direction: to inform as many people as possible, to make understand the simplicity of each gesture done not only for environment, but also for themselves...
Meanwhile, outside of my house ideas to write on the blog never missed.
Too bad that, instead, the weather was a tyrant and I had not the opportunity to jot down a thought in my little green notebook...
Around the summer literally exploded and from a "pink night" in Rimini, pleasantly and surprisingly crowded with bicycles, we arrived in second half of a hot July. Air conditioners shooting cold air anywhere even where no needed, people are taking pains to reach the sea driving hours and hours for hundreds of miles in cars with more and more facilities, more and more
large, more and more... unfortunately, too many! While some opt for more ecological resources, increasingly putting their own life at risk, because of the cars above...
In short ideas for thoughts that are often lost in the maze of my mind and cannot get on the blog... at least for now.
But do not worry, I'm keeping everything aside and I'll make you join in whenever I can!
For those who are still there, let me know how your summer started and for those are leaving, have a good summer!

Alla faccia della mobilità sostenibile! / So much for the sustainable mobility!
I am a user of buses and as user of buses now I am, suddenly, p…sed like a beast! This – to paraphrase the words of the Italian comedian-driver Gioele Dix – is my mood today, having had a sudden impact with the new promotional campaign of the public transport of Rimini and the new summer schedule of the buses...
Perché invece i treni sono sempre meno e costano di più?”And this is what I wrote on my little green diary a few weeks ago:
“Less than ten minutes on the train to home from work... even if I take about fifteen minutes on foot to the station. By bus it takes twenty minutes at best, plus the time for waiting...
Why not stopping once and for all with these vehicles on wheels that depend from oil?
Why are the trains less but cost more?”
I guess you didn’t understood too much.
Meanwhile, I suppose you understand that something in public transport of Rimini is wrong. Maybe you don’t care that much, but I imagine this is what is happening everywhere, thanks to funding cuts that all areas of public interest are seeing in recent times.
I take the bus for going office every day, covering about 7 km of road. I move from the suburbs north of Rimini. The cost of the bus ticket (until the end of this month) is 1 euro, but to save money, in recent months I have purchased each time a monthly suburban ticket which costs me 27 euro per month.
Assuming that the service has never been impeccable and the bus schedule from Rimini to the suburbs in winter had so few rides, I must say that I haven’t found it so bad, except some special day of strike, of road works or other events which never you did manage to escape.
I was proud to be able to use public transport after years of work at home. I could say to continue to maintain a low ecological footprint. And you have already read about that through the publication of this article in a local magazine.
But I wished things would improve in any case, perhaps waiting for the moment – I was early advised – there would be an integrated subscription that would allow me to use the bus plus train without an excessive rise in costs. The train would have been useful for me as a time saver, since it takes less time than buses, and would have led me to move, which would have been healthier for me.
I whished the trains were more frequent during peak hours and that could lead to bring bikes on – which is impossible for the set up of trains which excludes rush hour! –.
In short, I wanted in this world everyone would want a more integrated and efficient public transport and a person was free to take the train instead of bus, or bike instead of car or scooter!
Desires and hopes, and while I was hoping on buses new punching machines were appearing... they well promised…
Then the first disappointment.
The shift towards an integrated public transport network happened, yes, but at the expense of those who have short trips wanting to use either bus or train. Under the new system called “I move”, those who are obliged to take long routes by bus plus train are the only favoured.
In fact you can notice that there is a saving of money subscribing these vehicles on wheels – like the propaganda in print and online vaunted –, but you have to add the cost of transportation on rails!
So it’s like for 7 km by bus or, alternatively, by train, I had to pay double!
The second bad news surprised me a few days ago with the appearance of colorful graphics on the bus from a distance, but scary up close! This was the new charging journey bands, which have been identified for areas rather than on mileage!
So to double scam for me: I’m at the far end of the first zone and I must travel only 7 km to go to work... if I had to buy a single ticket, I should pay no less than 2 € a ride!
With the monthly subscription fee will go to pay almost ten euro more than now!
E no eh!!! Un autobus all’ora.
Bitter pill swallowed this time, today, out of curiosity, during the lunch break I look on the website of the public transport of Rimini, for information on new summer bus schedules...
And no, eh! Here is the straw that broke the camel’s back! The path of the bus I take will be split into two sections (that means that I would wait two buses) and in the second section the schedule is halved. One bus per hour. Which means to me uniquely get out late from work to catch the first bus good for me and get home very late or walking for twenty minute to a bus stop where the buses run more frequently... damn!
Allora una voce in me impietosa dice: “e fatti ‘sta bicicletta elettrica”!
Then a voice says to me mercilessly, “It’s the time to have this electric bicycle”!
I was thinking about it since a while. If I cannot turn my regular bike in a energy powered as suggested by the friends of Greenmotion, I’ll sell my beautiful bike purchased last year and, with much regret for my wallet, I’ll opt for a more definitive solution.
And they say that we should encourage sustainable mobility! I can’t believe!

E ora anche sulle riviste! / And now on magazines too!
This time you wouldn't expect a long post!
I have so many things to talk about, but there is a commitment for the next week, which keeps me from devoting more than a minute to the blog.
Then I hope to feel more free!
I am here to welcome all the new readers on Dandaworld, as a result of my appearance in an article in a local magazine, Rimini InMagazine!
The credit for this appearance is of my dear friend Cristella, some of you already know, because she was often mentioned by me and because her blog is in my blogroll.
Cristella is a journalist/blogger who knows me personally very well now! She knows how much I care about the environment and she shares my beliefs and green choices.
She even made an upcylce gift for me!
In short, I thank her for having counted me among the "Rimini pedestrians by choice."
Yeah, you all know that I do not like to drive, I love walking and cycling, I prefer to go to work by public transport (despite everything). I would, in short, a world with fewer cars and more happy people meeting on the bus or on the train, or meeting up for a bike ride or walk up the mountain!
On this subject I would write again and again. Especially because I see things getting worse ...
Meanwhile, I suggest to read the article by Maria Cristina, with so many other testimonies of people like me that often have their shoes serviced rather than their cars! :)

Here the link of the magazine where you can download the magazine in pdf.

;) / a small sore point for the magazine ... what about less car advertisements? ;)

On the way to Christmas!

Here I am, I’m returned. Sorry, I didn’t leave for the Maldives, anticipating Christmas holidays, but I needed to stay a little quite, far from the computer screen, to own more time.
These days passed in a Christmas atmosphere, a thing that someone of you hate. I ever had adored this season. When I was a child this time was joyful for me: the church chorus, the making of decorations and nativity scene, the handcrafts at school and home, money saved to make gifts and to see smiles on the relative’s faces, when they received.
I must admit. With the time going away the magic of Christmas is lost. To buy gifts is more a worry than a pleasure. But I try to take with myself the pleasant memories of festivity, trying also to extend the benefits. Every year I invent something new to live the moment with more happiness.
So Irish and me found a bit of time – we forced to do it, because we are very busy – to have a weekend in Trentino, going back where we went a year and half ago in summer. The idea was that to go visiting the Christmas market of Trento and then adding a walk in the near lands, arriving to Val di Non. Travelling by train, of course! We were lucky to find snow, fallen the day before. It was only enough to make a light enchanting veil on the land. What a marvellous sight!

We met Daniela again and she welcomed us in a very worm way. She brought us to see the new KlimaHouse – a perfect nest built in a very smart way – and she offered us a lot of handmade sweets. It’s worth to quote her fabulous apple strudel!

We loved the sight of the white lands where apple grow, even with bare trees, and we had a trip to the near town of Cles, where the Christmas didn’t change the quite atmosphere. We were surprised by the presence of a milk on tap self-distributor machine in the centre of the town. Then we couldn’t resist to a hot chocolate and a romantic shot…

In Trento the atmosphere was definitely more busy, with a lot of people packed and maybe stressed for travelling by car! They looked at us badly, seeing that we took the luggage along – in the train station a luggage deposit is missing – a little weigh, balanced from the tranquillity to travel and do other pleasant things: reading, chatting, yawning, eating, listening to music and… meeting friends too!
If someone wants to go there, I suggest train heartily. You will avoid tailbacks, stress, to look for parking, or to be packed during some hours. Then the little train that from Trento goes in Val di Non, arrives to Marilleva, Val di Sole, a famous ski station, and the travel is free for skiers!
It's a pity that Irish and me are able not to ski but only slide on trash sacks! LOL
The Christmas market of Trento is rich of beautiful handcrafted things – even if there are imported gifts too – but in the neighbourhood there are lots of markets too, look here. Trento could be also the first step to go toward Alto Adige, to visit the South-Tyrolean markets. Our friend Carmine knows it well, isn’t it? ;)
At the end we turn back home with lots of bags – paper bags except one – and other clothes bags with some little souvenirs of this short but intense weekend.
And Christmas atmosphere continues… our Christmas LED lighted tree is ready and a good scent of chocolate cookies is around home.
There’s a decoration I’ve made entrirely with reuse materials (bulb lamps, saved from landfill, and old unused nail polishes). The suggestion came from Vivere Verde with whom I am thankful to giving always lots of ideas. But if you want to prove to make this decoration be only careful to make the creation outside your home, or at least make it dry out there, to avoid breathing the smell of nail polish. Or you can buy water varnish or colours more appropriate for glass.

But there’s a lot to do more!
Saturday 12th we will be committed into a special event. A very good occasion that the organisation of Mani Tese offers at the Podestà’s palace in Rimini to buy some second-hand objects and give a second life, perhaps as gift for sensible people or to help the people of Burkina Faso. The market will be extended to Sunday 13th with a fantastic Kitsch Auction, with a real auctioneer and a lot of fun!
So, what a busy time! And we must prepare in time to front the amount of waste we will do on Christmas, hoping that, this year, we will make less waste and consume in a more smart way! But we will speak soon about these. For now I’m going singing…

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary 15-16 Aug 2008
:-D
The second last day in Valle di Non… it is Middle-August, bank holiday! On this celebration day weather brings a bad surprise: large grey clouds and rain here and there. What we can do? Moreover public transportations are halved and we can plan any trip with a eligible timetable. This time we need the help of the very gentle owners of the B&B that from the beginning were already available to accompany us if it had been necessary.
This time we cannot decline one of their kind lift to Cles, point of departure for various connections. But, since it rains, we decide to make a trip to Trento, a city that we had never visited before. We must go back to the south, but this doesn’t discourage us because there is the efficient railway line.
Designed times, we put ourselves on the road. Forty minute and we are in Trento, magnificent city! Now I’m not explaining here our whole tour, but worth saying that this city is colourful and full of history, with its many and sumptuous medieval palaces with frescoes outside, with its major roads that, crossing, give rise to extraordinary views! There is the magnificent Castle of Buonconsiglio which preserves finds of civilization here in Trentino valleys. There are balconies, gardens, and magnificent halls, as the Tower dell'Aquila bearing unique frescoes, depicting the months of the year. Unfortunately for the great crowds of tourists we cannot visit it, given that visits are by appointment, and then we reserve ourselves to come back!
We concentrate, instead, in the central square with the splendid Romanesque cathedral that recalls much more European cathedrals that the same tradition of Romanesque in Italy.
The day session is going to be sunny and hot, and then we walk for avenues and alleys observing every detail: the city is managed in a exemplary way and talking about ecology again, we see that it is equipped by ecological islands in some crossroads. Rubbish bins are rare, while those for recycling are very modern and they don’t bear nuisance to the aesthetic of the city at all. The lack of bins for generics waste is a nearly constant feature in all centres of Trentino… perhaps they almost wanted to invite the tourists to produce less waste and recycle! So much that I myself found uneasy to adapt at it: so I always brought waste with me in a bag in my backpack, then I recycled them when I encountered the different bins.
As it is the time of returning back, sky is dark and threatening a thunderstorm. Thus we return to the station to wait for the train. In the heart sadness is increasing, because tomorrow we go back home…The next day – it seems almost joking with us – the sky is smooth and from the windows of the B&B landscapes stand out clear to our gaze… we have time to leave and since the bus left too soon our kind hosts recommends us that we can make one last quiet walk, because then she will accompany us at the station.
So we prepare our luggage and I sit to still immortalize some details of this beautiful place where we stayed during these days, just to document how we just can do to make the world civil and pleasant. The recycling includes organic fraction, there are composters in every garden in the town, so beautiful flowers on the balconies and some under-house allotments are full of trees of apple, figs, cherries - always taken in assault from birds - in short, a place that puts in the heart the joy of living! Except that, being in the summer, few… inhabitants are moving!
We do a nice walk on the hilly behind the town on a road that leads to a trail in the mountain, in woods. How many paths we left behind unexplored. We must absolutely come back!
So our holiday ends with a close embrace with the dear Daniela who brought us there and some little tears… we were so well!
Reflecting, the negative sides of an eco-like holiday are few and you can count on the tip of fingers: less freedom to move, this is sure, but at least we’ve made an almost zero environmental impact in this fabulous area of Trentino and we are proud of it!
We just have to return to everyday life and perhaps… what about a program for the next summer? :-D

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary - 12 Aug 2008 2nd part
(continued from the previous post)
We follow the path traced on panels and on the map provided by the park, at the beginning of parking where we left the bus. Midway we face one of several farms in stone and wood built, unfortunately before the park was established, around the slopes surrounding the lake. While some of these are hotels or private homes the latter is used as a ‘house of the park’. We decide to enter and immediately we access in a small multimedia show very beautiful and educational, especially for young: passing the lightened panels turn on and projections start with audio commentary. So you can discover the varieties of flora and fauna of the park and the famous phenomenon that gives the lake the name of ‘red’. A medieval legend speaks of a clash between armies of different factions for the conquest of a noble damsel, which was the cause of dyeing the lake with shed blood. This coloration would then magically repeat every year during warmer weather. Instead the phenomenon, that strangely does not repeat from the'80s anymore, has been scientifically explained by the presence of a particular alga in water.
This and many other beautiful notions of the lake and the park are also explained in the documentary in about twenty minutes, which we see a small projections room. We are alone, seated enchanted in front of these images. What a sin that other tourists are not minimally interested in naturalistic aspects of the place! So I feel some tears under my eyes when I see that the park is inhabited by a few examples of bears that were elected as symbol of the park. They are seen rarely, when the lake has not yet been taken assault by tourists. How could they leave out with noises and disorder that we bring to a so delicate ecosystem? The human presence here is more harmful than elsewhere.
Leaving the room we thank the guide because she has recommended the vision of the movie and then we give a look in the bookshop, leave our news in some questionnaires and buy few things in memory of this visit: no silly and unnecessary souvenirs! We buy a 2009 calendar with watercolour illustrations of trees in the park and a fabric bag, but there she gives us free the 2008 beautiful calendar and a sticker. We bring all this way in a biodegradable at 100% bag which is the bag that is given to everyone here at the park for bringing behind own waste! In fact, the waste bins were eliminated according to give tourists responsibility for the collection and disposal in an ‘ecological island’ near the parking lot.
After properly informed, we continue our way to close the ring around the lake. The recommended trail stops at a certain point, because the remaining part, that joins the point of departure, is more demanding, and then referred to as ‘dangerous’. In fact, the danger lies in the fact that the path is all various up-and-down, slippery and exposed but equipped with steps and metal cables to which you can take balances. My initial worries dissolve immediately because the last part is that most beautiful and quiet one. Sometimes the lake is close to our left, deep, threateningly from the bottom of our feet, sometimes it is clear with now deserted beaches that open among the green. At almost 1200 metres we breathe deeply the air filtered by dense woods at this point, with scents of earth, moss, firs and pines. Even eyes are filled with an unusual lit green, and the view of mountains, that are reflected so well in the lake, makes us think of a fantasy world hidden beneath the water!
In just under three hours our lap around the lake is concluded and we returned to the point of departure, where there is the bus waiting. We have to wait a while before leaving, then we read the panels displayed from the park calling on tourists to behave respectfully towards environment. We also give a quick glance to the ‘ecological island’ that seems more a weather station and is also provided solar panels. The organisation, in short, is perfect!
Going on the shuttle we understand that we’re the last two tourists of the day. On the bus we are with the driver and the guide that retrieves his things after closing access to parking. I feel a hint of envy for her job: what I can do to work in the midst of such a paradise! On the way back we talk with this girl learning that the body of the park is trying to discourage the use of cars, making available these shuttles, each year with tickets always less expensive! Then she tells us that a few years ago tourists could see the bear having a bath in the lake and in another time, the eagle flying over the sky of the throat that enters the lake! What luck, what emotion!
We go back to B&B, tired but happy and we just can’t wait the new day… the program for the next day is not so bad!

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary - 12 Aug 2008 1st part
Wake up early in the morning, we are ready to start our holiday as good ‘walkers’ rather than hikers – we are not highly trained, sigh! –. The first real day in Val di Non – which, I advise, offers much more of good apples! – will be dedicated to the visit of Tovel Lake, in the Adamello-Brenta mountains group, just over the south-west of where we are.
But first I must mention the wonderful breakfast that is offered, not only to our palates, but also to our eyes! The gentle lady of the house, coming in the dining room, begins to compose a picture of colours and flavours, where we are at the table, with local and seasonal fruit (apricots, peaches, raspberries), Trentino yoghurt, genuine jams, just hot bread home-made with genuine ingredients and without additives, and finally an inviting dessert always done at home, a little tart of raspberry mousse and yogurt! Mmm what a goodness! Our mouths are filled with sweetness and remain without words… only the aspect of all this goodness feeds us without mentioning flavour and fragrance (the photo at the side portrays one of many breakfast every day different and always delicious)!
But let us return to our itinerary… we decide to take public transports: reaching Cles there is a shuttle bus that goes directly to Tovel. It is organized by the Natural Park of Adamello-Brenta. But we’re wrong about timetable for the first leg and we think we can go to Cles by foot… nothing more wrong: road is long and tortuous and there is a tunnel at the bottom! So we renounce and, after about four kilometers on foot we pause to Cagnò, where we rest for about an hour and a half. We sit on the bench around the trunk of a tree and read some brochures until a strange man arrives, occurred in electric car. He starts to fix us curiously. Then he asks us if we are foreigners and when his doubt is dissolved, a little chat begins with us and then joking with his acquaintance, passing from there, in close dialect of Trentino, which we don’t understand. But it makes us smile and so time passes until the bus to Cles arrives. In route to Tovel from the windows of the bus we see endless apple orchards scrolling, all owned by the most famous Italian brand. More and more climbing the landscape is transformed with the emergence of woods. Then you reach the parking lot where you can only continue walking. There are several paths, but one in particular towards the Lake is a short stretch lined with a clear torrent that invites to bathe. But here we are in a protected area! After a wooden bridge the sight of a lake nestled between the rocks and green, with nuances from light blue to emerald opens to us! A fantastic spectacle! What a pity that the high cloudiness of the day makes grey the atmosphere but it doesn’t hamper mountains reflecting in this wonderful mirror!
We approach the water where some small tourist enjoy throw stones in the lake that seems apparently lifeless. The bottom is gray, but setting a good gravel you find that it is full of small fishes, chars… strange creatures! After observed them for a while we decide to walk on the path along the lake passing between tall trees that touch with roots the banks. Sometimes spectacular views open among the trees, while looking high toward the peaks, you see large meadows. It is here that the famous huts are hidden approximately at 2000 metres and where there is the production of excellent fresh cheeses. You can arrive climbing trails, well-marked paths, but this time we cannot go adventuring for lack of time and training… (to be continued)

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary - 11 Aug 2008
Here’s the second part of holidays, a second trip to the high Italy, Trentino, Val di Non. I am not alone this time, I was accompanied by my mate, finally on vacation. We escape from the chaos of August in Rimini, searching for an oasis of tranquillity, where we can breathe good air and then walk in nature.
By chance, we had chosen on the Internet a B&B in Revò, on Lake Santa Giustina. We was inspired by the name that recalls an ‘enchanted’ atmosphere, and by the ‘Ecolabel’ certification. We decided to go by train to save gasoline and to feel less oppressed by the movement of holidaymakers exoduses on motorways. Thus, documented in depth through web on local transport and with tickets purchased, we face a journey of about 400 km in Intercity, to Trento. Strangely the train leaves in time (eh, eh, will it be because it has to go to Germany?), and arrives at its destination on time after crossing the Po Valley and then going slowly toward the mountains. During the trip, we have seen numerous campaigns with mini-wind power pales, while at the various stations, we are pleased to see that the FS have adopted recycling facilities, but they are almost totally ignored by passengers.
Meanwhile, time has passed quickly reading and listening to music. At Trento we expect another train, this time on a local rail electricity, Trento-Malè. Almost all trains are modern and equipped with air conditioning and doors that open only on request. Our last stop is at Cles from where buses depart for the various localities, including Revò, but the kind master of the B&B is waiting for us there and she gives us a lift by car. Just knowing her, make us realize that she is a delicious and very cordial person.
So chatting along the eight km which divide the two cities, the lady tells us of her B&B: ‘Ecolabel’ certification is not new to her house, that has been provided some times ago with solar panels heating system. Now they're trying to equip the apartments with new technologies that should lead to a greater environmental certification, also a European one. Indeed here, flipping around our eyes, we see that the inhabitants of Trentino are much more attentive to energy saving. Almost all the houses have rooftop solar panels! Often three elements for each building.
So talking about this and other topics, we came to the house that is located on the slopes of a hill between residences and fields of apples, so we are brought to our apartment. But, due to our curiosity about environment, we are guided to a small tour of the restructuring yard of part of the same residence. This will be rethought to retain the heat. In practice a skin has been studied, according to leave a inner space filled with insulation. Thus the wall has a thickness of about 70 cm! In addition, interiors will be completely covered with wood, floors will be raised to allow the passage of heating pipes and various facilities including natural ventilation (like in a ‘domus’ of the ancient Romans). In addition the new part of the B&B will have a common room with fireplace where you can spend beautiful moments shared with the hosts and other guests.
Well, we have to admit that already with this background we are encouraged to return here, but what leaves us more enchanted (and I have flown over initially to say) is the room where we will stay for these next five days: a real apartment, with a bedroom, a living room and a kitchenette, a bathroom with a disengagement / laundry, TV and a sitting room and a wood loft on which a bed enlightened from a skylight. Every detail is well cared for, it seems one of those houses you see in furniture magazines: the table is well set, bed with embroidered linens, all set with taste and clear tones that express the personality of the owner. A radiant person who prefers to treat guests as such guests and not as customers!
After a few minutes chatting with her and having met her husband, we feel in such as a company of people who you have always known!
At the time of being left alone we incredulous admire the apartment and find numerous brochures and books useful to plan and enjoy the next few days. A small album is catching our attention. It is the guestbook. Inside there are rhymes, drawings and pages of praise, particularly for care in breakfast, which everybody seem enthusiastic! Then, we concentrate in preparing next days in this cozy nest on the sides of Trentino mountains …

Vivere in modo eco-compatibile anche in vacanza - N°4 / Sustainable living… even on holiday - #4
Here I am again after a long time with my suggestions for a sustainable living. Don’t worry, I wasn’t negligent all this time!

We are now in full summer and, in particular, this year I'm in the middle of tourist season in Rimini, coveted destination for families and young people who want to have fun.
All good, right here, the summer season brings joy and movement in those places where winter is felt with a sense of melancholy. But… Summer is also when we relax, we can take care of ourselves… but we end with neglecting the environment around us.
Just do a tour through the streets and see how much trash soils our most beautiful holiday places. Ice cream wraps, plastic bottles of water and various drinks, cans, residues of cigarettes, newspapers and other kinds of waste. Is as if we are going elsewhere we should feel somehow freer to do what we think.
It should not be so! Indeed, precisely because we are away from home and we are in places that have probably attracted us because of the their beauty we should be more attentive to let them clean.
So what can we do for not feeling indolent and being more environmentally friendly even on vacation?
First possibly use trains, and buses, that along national lines. If you cannot say no to the car, it can be useful to be more people in a single car and schedule trips to avoid disadvantageous trips. Then leave your car where you can and then use local public transport.
For years I travelled without using the car and I can admit that, despite the impossibility of reaching some more isolated places, I still had a chance to see beautiful location.
In some cities and tourist centres there are bikes hiring or bike sharing points – the latter here in Rimini too –, two options that offer the opportunity to shoot in a bike with zero carbon dioxide emissions. Take the benefits! And then there are rickshaws and pedal boats to having more fun.
Things to avoid are those very noisy dune buggies that waste petrol and leave trails of smog and dust behind, give nuisance not only to the environment, but above all to other people!
What about choosing among hotels, bed and breakfast, farms and camping? Of course I am for the latter two. Hotels are absolutely the tourist facilities that have more high environmental impact.
Although some have a greater attention or as here in Rimini were obliged to comply with certain rules, such as recycling, and incentives to install solar panels for energy savings. But certainly it is easier to find bed and breakfast or farms that at equal price – or less – offer stays with low environmental impact. There are some who set sustainable tourism as main task.
Who goes to camp, however, is already well accustomed to adaptation in environment, conservation of resources, although some less willing people use too much disposable objects. In regular campsites is easy to have that comforts that instead in the free camping are missing. Here we must be very careful not to leave non-biodegradable waste around, not to make fires in flammable spots, not to damage vegetation and occupied soil, not to pollute sources and waterways from which animals and plants draw their sustenance.
But what can give you more than a holiday spent in open air, on contact with nature?
Then, a great attention must be taken not to abandon waste. In some places there are cleaning services but, where they are missing, why not give others tourists the possibility to equally enjoy a clean and cared place?
On the beach now many bathing establishments – as here – have recycling bins. With a minimum of attention you can avoid to lay waste in the wrong bin! If there aren’t containers for recycling, I suggest always go out with a bag where to put waste – especially recyclable ones – until you find a suitable bin. I do it, at the cost of sounding mad!
Attenzione con le stoviglie usa e getta! Piatti, bicchieri, posate, cannucce, stecche, meglio evitarli.
Be careful with the disposable tools! Dishes, glasses, cutlery, straws, battens, it’s better to avoid them. During this period we make a great use of them, especially in fairs and local festivals. Do not thrown with paper or plastic. Typically they are made of cardboard with a plastic film or polystyrene (PS), which cannot be mixed with other plastics, despite being recyclable. Hence you must put them in the black bin or take them home and wash: you can reuse for so many other times!
Another alternative is to bring folding or closable glasses and cutlery, at camping is certainly the better choice.
So for water and beverages. It will be for the hot weather but consumption is too high! Then on trips and walks why not bringing a thermos bottle of good water from the tap or of tea or coffee made at home, which are certainly safer than those we buy around?
And then another good advice… because we go on vacation with the aim of breathing differently, why not abandoning smoking? How many of you, with his feet in the sand, have come in the filters of abandoned cigarettes? It is really disgusting, but especially have you an idea of how long they remain there if nobody cleans or, worse if they are going into the sea? They are dangerous for sea species and degrade in about three years, and so they aren’t considered in the biodegradable standards.
If you are at sea or in the mountains it would be even more intelligent do use of environmentally friendly products for cleaning and hygiene. If you haven’t still tried them you… why not starting from now?
You’ll have certainly less remorse if you take a shower on the beach or wash the dishes in a fountain in the mountains!
Finally when you go out for dinner, choose a place with local and seasonal cuisine. A thousand stars more if you prefer restaurants that give water from the tap or in glass bottles!
Poi via libera a passeggiate a piedi, nuotate, musica e spettacoli, mangiate all’aria aperta!
In short, if we pay a little 'more attention it will be a beautiful holiday for everyone and, if we’ll go back to the same places years later, perhaps we will find them improved! So green light for walking, swimming, music and entertainments, as dining in the open air! About this… this week we’ll make experience with the new ice cream and yogurt machines, bought specially for refreshing ourselves and producing less waste! There you’ll know ;-)
Intanto… buone vacanze!
