Per Daniza... / To Daniza...
I have no words for your sad end, I would not have ears to listen to this news that left me so incredulous.
I already haven't known and probably will never know the love that a mother can have for her children, but I know it is a great and immense love, a love that overcomes every obstacle, defeating every fear...
We humans should know this even better than any other species on this planet.
Precisely for this reason I do not and will never understand the injustice that took you away from your bear cubs.
Why we humans are allowed to feel all the possible and imaginable emotions and exalt them as if they were our prerogative, while you, other inhabitants of this Earth – for us – you can not, you do not have the right to feel affection, love, joy, misery, distance, fear, loss, desire, wonder, jealousy, serenity, belonging? Why?
Since we are young your image keeps us company in our cradle, you have always been the image of tenderness.
Now, as adults, we forget, and we treat you as useless toys, decorations like to move in this or in that other park at will, then get rid of you, when your presence is more cumbersome and takes ownership of what once was just your home.
Shame on us.
It shakes my heart to think of your cubs, alone, now, at the mercy of... inhuman beings!

Paola & Kia, vegan per amore, compostatrici per passione! / vegan for love, composter for passion!
For a long time I was
planning to write a review for the book I received as a gift at Christmas, “La mia vita a impatto zero” (trad. “My Zero Impact
Life” - Mondadori 2012). The time it took to be read would have
been even less if it were not for the few and concentrated moments I
dedicate to read books, being almost always in front of a screen.
But when I finished reading it, it seemed natural to take in hand and browse a lovely little book, “Dalle bucce nascono i fiori”(trad. “From veggie scraps to flowers” - Terre di Mezzo Ed. 2013).
But when I finished reading it, it seemed natural to take in hand and browse a lovely little book, “Dalle bucce nascono i fiori”(trad. “From veggie scraps to flowers” - Terre di Mezzo Ed. 2013).
autrici, Paola Maugeri e Carmela Giambrone (conosciuta in rete col
nome di Kia). Comincerò a parlare prima di quest’ultima.
These two books are not
written by the same person but they have a “silk thread” that
connects the two authors, Paola Maugeri and Carmela Giambrone (known
online under the name of Kia). I am beginnig to tell you before about
this last one.
suo know-how in rete e attraverso i suoi laboratori.
i vicini.
divertenti e fanno bene, molto bene all’ambiente!!!
I know Kia since 2011,
when it began to spread through her blog her experiments on DIY
compost bin for balconies. As good fellow bloggers we exchanged
comments and praises, and I was excited about her “challenge”,
doing since long home composting in my garden and explaining it
through some composting workshop with Mani Tese, around my city,
where many people showed their doubts about the possibility of
practicing composting even on their own balcony.
Well, Kia already had the answer to all these questions. She proved to make a do-it-yourself compost bin for balcony easy to build, providing all its know-how in the web and through her own workshops. Over time she has become an expert in composting, so skillfully to explain – in a very simple and convincing way in her book “Dalle bucce nascono i fiori” – the natural process, techniques and secrets to get a wonderful compost, allowing yourself to have an orchard/garden on the balcony of your house, without any discomfort for yourself and your neighbors.
A few pages for a few basic concepts and a few gestures which – if practiced daily as all the habits we have – are always been simple and even fun. Habits that are very good for you and environment!

zero – o “quasi zero”, come poi specifica dopo –, attraverso
non solo all’ambiente!!!
But what is the bond
between Kia and the better known Paola Maugeri?
Paola was a real surprise to me ... I still remember she as host of Videomusic – and MTV then –, as since ’95 I have always been interested in music through a particular passion, having founded and then managed with other people, the fan club and then the Italian website of The Cranberries.
I've always liked the way she shows herself to the public so genuine and sincere, free from the standards – which, unfortunately, the music industry is full – but I never imagined, after all these years, to read a book of hers and love her again and more under a new guise, that of a vegan and a zero impact champion!
But the word “champion” sounds bad, because in her book, “La mia vita a impatto zero”, she doesn’t use to put herself on a pedestal! In fact, I was expecting one of the usual “guide” on how to reduce your impact on environment, doing this or that thing.
I had already seen the episodes of the series, with the same title of the book, the TV show “E se domani” and I expected to find between the lines of the text more or less the same contents. On the contrary this book for me was a real surprise!
Paola tells us about her zero impact life – or “almost zero”, as she specify after in the book – through her memorable but also painful experiences, through her memories with a scent of Sicily – also because of the delicious vegan recipes that close each chapter – through her meetings with celebrities from the music world – and not only! –, giving us true pearls and letting us discover the intensity and passion with which she seasons every moment of work and everyday life.
Reading this “journey in her life” made me realize that you should not take anything for granted, that you must take great courage, that sometimes you have to jump and close your eyes to achieve a goal that could be the zero impact, an audition or at least an improvised tango ...
Hers is an ode to life, screaming to the world with the strength of a true rocker and whispered in a ear as the voice of a mother to her child.
Truly a book that is good for the heart, not just for the environment!

PS: Blimey, I did not tell more how Kia and Paola are connected to each other ... so go and find out yourself! ;) You are just in time for Paola’s new book which is already in bookshops, “Las Vegans” ... I cannot wait to have it with me!

Il salvataggio di Chicco / Saving Chicco
![]() |
gazze!”. Effettivamente tutto quel crat-crat mi stava facendo preoccupare,
Eccolo “Chicco!”
alto, strillando “crat-crat-crat” in continuazione.
Allora scatta l’operazione salvataggio.
I nostri vicini,
Insomma, dopo vari tentativi riusciamo a farlo salire su
Fortunatamente me ne sono subito accorta. Era
gatti in casa.
It’s Saturday, late morning, I’m at home, at my computer
despite out there is more than a summer day. The cheerful chirping of birds
don’t take me away from that hypnotic thing, if not for the incessant cawing of
a few to more magpies, surely perched on one of the tall pines that surround
our home.
My companion is back from work, it’s almost noon and soon we
will work to prepare lunch. While we tell about the things that happened in the
morning I spontaneously say: “Listen to that racket of magpies!” Actually all
that “crat-crat” makes me worry, because animals are very hyper-sensitive to
disruption of the climate and the earth ... but then Paul (aka Irish) reassures
me: “But no, that is out there is a chick magpie fell in the garden of our
neighbors.”
“Ah, that’s why!” But this does not reassure me at all, even
I run out to see where he is.
Here it is “Chicco!” (I call it instinctively), he is on the
ground, frightened, on the grass of the neighbor’s yard next to the wall that
separates it from ours. Magpies Mom and Dad jump from branch to branch of pine,
high up, screaming “crat-crat-crat” continuously.
Then it starts the save operation.
It must be said that our area is very populated with cats. A
cat in our stable, another where a neighbor's dropped the baby magpie, two cats
of our front neighbors and then there are often other visits, given that in our
road there is just a whole family of cats more or less looked after.
So first of all we must keep an eye on the baby, preserving
him for not being attacked by any of those cats. Our neighbors, temporarily
absent, there can’t be helpful.
So let’s see how to get the little chick more visible so
that parents can see from above.
We take a little long branch and try to push him but he
takes shelter under a bush. We try to call him out by giving him nothing but
oats, he hops a bit, not able to fly and he takes shelter under the leaves. In
the meantime, we know if the parents have got where he is, because Chicco did
not do much to being heard, every now and then emits a “squit” in responding to
their alarm calls.
In short, after several attempts we get him on that branch
and gently we bring on our side. We put him of the floor and I take worms from
my compost trying to feed him. He eats two, then he does not want more. I
imagine that the parents had mouthfuls of much good!
So we decide to call the Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals, which is not very far from our house. We find the phone on the web and
a person answered. I tried to explain the situation. He explained me that he is
so small that it can be dropped because of the big gusts of wind. The magpies
rarely descend to the ground. As very suspicious, they are unable to care for
their young after they have fallen, as do for example the blackbirds. But their
calls is to give them instructions on how to put on guard. The young do not
know their predators! So, with the danger of cats there is a risk that this
little magpie has not much hope of surviving.
Then he informs us on what to do and there are two
possibilities. One is to try putting the baby in an area away from the cats, at
the top so it can be reached by the parents, or go to the Recovery Centre.
Honestly, I am upset! We then try to put on a high branch of
the great magnolia in our yard, but time to return home to prepare something,
Chicco, who tries with hops to climb higher, to be seen by mom and dad, makes a
tumble to the ground. Fortunately, I immediately notice. He is ended up on the
road!
I worry so that Paul came to help him back into the garden.
I meet our beighbor that lets us know that the baby had already dropped from
the previous evening, so much so that she forced her two cats at home.
In short, the time to eat something nervously waiting for
the Centre’s reopening to the public, we have reluctantly decided to take him
there, because, while we had been placed him in a basket for the pruning of
garden, Chicco was running to become the prey of pussy who lives in our stable!
So, with the echo of the cries of his parents – the expert
made me know that they certainly have a second chick to care – Chicco is
brought in a big box with holes, coated on the bottom with leaves, to a new
home, where someone will take care and preserve him until he is able to look
after himself alone. There are the “angels” who save animals from danger every
day. It seems incredible to know that around an urbanized area such as Rimini,
there are so many wild animals!
A small starling, the same fate of Chicco, was already
waiting for treatment. And then we saw other friends: a deer rescued recently,
many other species of birds, including birds of prey (in separate aviaries) and
another ... magpie! The latter was perched on a branch (I wonder what his
story) and has captured our curiosity to wonder: being in contact with humans
has learned to say “hello”! We have we heard with our ears! Unbelievable! I
wonder if Chicco will learn to “speak”!
The fact is that I will miss him a lot. We have been
together a short time and already I got fond of his “squit” and his black eyes
...
Goodbye Chicco, we hope that you will be well and hope to visit
you one day, or better, see you fly freely in the skies!
domenica 5 febbraio 2012
Settimana bianca in montagna??? / Skiing holiday in the mountains??
Not at all, from now on you can also ski on the beaches
of the Adriatic Coast!
And I’m not kidding!
After a week of uncertainty among sleet, water and snow
storm and frosts, this last weekend has brought us so much snow that seems to
be at a ski area!
Here in Rimini, today, Sunday, Feb. 5, on the beach there
are 25 cm of snow! It snowed continuously for more than 36 hours and the
temperatures are constantly below 0° C.
Do not believe us? Watch the slideshow below!
But we could not complain much ... who is the hinterland
of Romagna is much worse. In some places the snow has now reached two meters
and army, civil defense, volunteers are in action to shovel and give help to
those in need.
In short, the winter we all have been waiting more or
less a month ago has arrived. Late, but it is being felt! The rest of Italy is
not far behind us and on social networks comments and photos of snow scenes are
going crazy from everywhere ...
ciuffolotto fringuello!!! Bellissimo!
There is always the surprise and joy at seeing all white
... but there are also some very positive aspects. Some people suffer the cold
... for example, wild animals are the ones most affected.
Have you noticed these days a ever more frequently
flutter? When it snows we see birds close to our homes that we have never seen
before!
Just recently, I have seen on our roofs a bird of prey
flying... hard to say if it was a buzzard or a screech owl or barn owl – his
head was rather large and he has an elongated tail, but it’s been a while and I
could not understand what species he was –.
This morning, however, we lifted our head for having
heard a lot of strange cry and saw a flock of herons in flight going south!
As our mangers – which for so much snow we had to put all
in the same spot where the birds are accustomed to finding food – have been
besieged with sparrows, blackbirds, great tits, robins ... and now there is a
last newcomer: a bullfinch chaffinch! Beautiful!
You can not just be spectators in this fluttering! During
the day we replenished several times the feeders with seeds, granola, dried
fruit, crumbs and Babbalù balls. It seems that it is never enough, but luckily
we turn around and see that there are other neighbors to help feathered
friends! In addition to our home front and even further down the same street
many of them have put together mangers, like this:
:(
It’s nice to see so many people come to life to help
animals overcome this cold and thankfully the network is enlivening a great
word of mouth recommendations to build feeders with makeshift materials. But this
morning, while we were around to capture this strange landscape I have also
heard, alas, noises similar to gunshots. I would not, indeed, I dare not
imagine that there are ruthless hunters who take advantage of this tragic
situation to kill innocent and helpless little birds! :(
Giornate come queste dovrebbero farci riflettere a quanto
rispettandola!
Days like these should give us pause to think that we are
dependent on the climate and nature that surrounds us. Is there in you anger
with the simple fact that with all this snow we should go back to our
activities, fussing and running as usual? To my mind, when nature puts us to
the test, she throws us a message: we should better adapt to her rhythms, her seasons, her climate, respecting her!

Guardando “blu” attraverso un paio di occhialetti 3D / Seeing “blue” through a pair of 3D lens…
I love the fantasy genre, I love high tech movies, I love the stories that move you in the deep of your soul. And all these things made me go to watch… Avatar.
I don’t like the crowd in cinemas when a movie is too much famous, I don’t like the gunfire movies, I don’t like the “American” kind of film. And all these things made me go to watch Avatar with a very prejudiced mood.
After having read many favourable reviews and comments about the movie, I couldn’t wait to see it. We went no less than two times in the only multiplex of the city before finding a show with seats not in the first line.
Before doing the last attempt, I found on the internet the movie trailer to ensure myself that it was really worth to go… but I wasn’t so enthusiastic. If I previously didn't read anything about the movie, probably I wouldn’t have done the effort to go for the third time in a shopping centre and wait for no less than 5 hours before being in a seat with a pair of 3D glasses.
Ma… ne è valsa la pena.
But… it was worth.
I don’t want to add redundant comments to all what was said on the movie.
I just want to say that it is impressive from a digital graphic point of view – I was a bit disappointed by the view that was disturbed by an inappropriate screen and uncomfortable 3D glasses –.
The built scenery and shots are more than marvellous. Spectacular and exciting views on a world that, even a bit similar to ours, is strongly inspired to it.
If animals have a Jurassic look, the fantastic flora is built in a real symmetry with rules of our nature. To add, the breathtaking landscapes – that you can imagine as a different evolution of our planet – have a strange geology, given by different physical laws.
Even not having a very original plot, the story of Avatar has the right ingredients for a fantasy that isn’t too metaphysical and far from reality. On the contrary, it is clear that it has been conceived as the projection in the future, and in another planet, of what is happened – or still happens everyday in our Earth – far from our eyes.
In fact, as you imagine, what convinced me to go to watch the movie was the loud green message that is at the base of the story: the defence of the planet and its living beings. A praise goes to all the creators that showed this reality in a way never done before.
All had– and will also have – the chance to watch Avatar. I’ve seen queues of teens, kids with parents, girls in shopping mood and also old people.
Did the message arrive in everyone’s head?
I have some doubt alas!
In my own opinion, everything was too much stuffed with guerrilla, weapons and improbable situations typical of American movies (is it not a case if the director is the same of Terminator), where the wicked resists until the last breath, to achieve his aim.
I fear that the green message is lost in the usual fight between good and evil.
Some laughs in the audience made me thinking that. People laugh at seeing natives dressed with few clothes, or seeing their rituals or laugh at the strange and sudden metamorphosis of an animal.
So I think to our history, when the human foot is got off new shores and unknown lands. I think to the African tribes, to the Amazonian Forest, to the Indian reservations. I think how poor we are.
We are always the same. We are wretched. The “different one” makes us laugh as if our reality is the best and the more sane.
Facing the new we think that it’s better to “take samples”, staying at distance, coldly analysing and ending to envy and hanker every richness we find, distorting it.
Our senses are asleep, our eyes are closed. We don’t appreciate and misunderstand energy and life that our planet gives us under different shapes.
Going out from the cinema, many felt relief. Me for the heat and the tiredness to wait and be sat , many for the happy end that came before many dramatic surprises. But the most, I believe, were relief saying “it’s only a movie”.
Invece, guardiamoci attorno.
But let’s see all around us. We are destroying our Earth. We are chopping down every green centimetre we see toward us, to build, to exploit the soil. We don’t set up a feeling with the living beings we find in our habitats. We have to touch and uproot every particular thing we find. And when we are in front of a different culture we behave in a ridiculous and irreverent way.
To sum up Avatar is a movie that is worth to be seen. And many times too, to catch every detail of the human facets that here are put in front of us as in a mirror… and also to think about it.
Each of us can discover his “avatar”, not another aspect of our person that behaves in a different and separate way. Our “avatar” can be the deepest part of our being, the most sensible and instinctive, the part that has still roots in the environment in which we live.
With the hope that this “avatar” could prevail on the bad aspects of our way to be “human”.

"The animal instinct in me"...
Since the start of this year, I promised to myself to walk with you on a path to the meditation.
Well, daily events offer a lot of topics to think about our nature. A very strange nature, detached from the same world in which it lives, the human nature.
Though it’s not this the thing I want to focus our attention. I just want to invert our point of view.
We usually hear to talk about our relationship with animals, putting the human being at the centre and wondering if our behaviour toward thems is right or wrong. Then we always continue to establish our supremacy, even if sometimes it’s unintentional.
But, have you never watched animals closely? Did you wonder about how they see us, if they are able to think, approach and communicate with us?
I am sure that, if you have a pet, you’ll know what I am talking about.
I am not so lucky. When I was a child I had some goldfishes, some birds that on time flew away from the cage, and that’s that. But I often looked carefully at animals. For example, I looked at the magpies from the window of my room, at the swallows, at the dogs that were left alone by their owners on the verandas of holiday homes.
And to watch gave me a lot of wonderful surprises. I think that it’s very important to look at animals to understand them in the best way.
Now, in our garden, my companion and me are committed to offer a refuge with a little food for birds who come here. When I can, I look carefully at them.
Sparrows, blackbirds, robins, great tits, blackcaps, black redstarts, and other species I didn’t recognize are popping in the garden. They don’t arrive all together, but alternate… some pop in a year, others the year after. In short, it’s all a continual coming and going.
Perhaps the seaside is a transit place for many species. Here in Rimini, it’s even easy to see grey herons on the Marecchia river.
But, in my little sphere, it’s curious to look at the behaviour of our plumed friends.
As, for example, when they come near the manger we built with some wooden leftovers from a wine-rack. We didn’t finish it and we have to hang it on a pine. Now it is on the ground and birds don’t trust of it. Blackbirds go near it, steal crumbs and escape. Great tits and robins are more brave and go in and out the manger, dragging out the tray with crumbs. They have different tastes! They steal bread, cakes or cookies crumbs one another. And you want to burst out laughing, but, after all, they are fighting for surviving.

And you want to burst out laughing, but, after all, they are fighting for surviving.
Chissà, ho pensato, cosa pensa di me.
But the thing that impresses me a lot, since the year is started, is the behaviour of a very special robin. I’ve just told you some time. He’s our “Orange little”, a creature that sometimes looks at you from the garden wall and seems a little orange with two very black eyes.
This little creature leaves you astounded.
He hasn’t fear, but, comes to look for us from a window when he doesn’t see us taking his “lunch”. He calls us with a single "tweet". He looks at us from the wall when we set the food in the tray, then he waits that we turn a bit away, and flies down to eat. When he’s sated, he starts to sing, quietly and continuously. It’s a sort of “thank you”. If we are still around he looks at us an moves his tail at the rhythm of his melody.
He’s a marvellous being.
Sometimes we are working in the garden and he pops in, following and looking at us. Once I crouched and, at the distance of a pair of meters, he looked at me jumping around the point I stood. I couldn’t believe!
Who knows what he was thinking of me. It’s certain that he recognizes us, looks for us and sings for thanking us. He is almost a human!
If only we could live in harmony with all the animals, trying to understand how they see us, what they think of us and prove for us!
Neither I can think that some people still go hunting!
Thinking on our flying fauna… how could they kill such a little and intelligent creatures, that still trust in us?
I shiver when I think that there’s still someone who enjoys to kill animals who live in the same own world. They contribute to the same food chain we are part of and they are part of the life cycle of our planet. They make our world beautiful while we are destroying it.
I ask you to spread awareness among people you know. Our government is making a great mistake. Wake up, support campaigns against hunt. Make aware people that this is the more foolish law that is becoming a sad and crude reality.
I point out also an on-line petition, organized by LIPU (Italian League for Birds Protection), that – ok, if it hasn’t a great legal value – has a great commitment for increasing awareness. If you don’t want to sign it, please read their articles and put a link on your web pages. Your plumed friends will be grateful.

I point out also an on-line petition, organized by LIPU (Italian League for Birds Protection), that – ok, if it hasn’t a great legal value – has a great commitment for increasing awareness. 1° confessione del 2010: sono un mostro / The first confession of 2010: I’m a monster
For a long time I’ve been wanting to take up Marco’s blog post, whose “coming out” was continued in other bloggers comments, or in blog posts – as Giovanna who ironically minimized saying that she felt like in a group of Alcoholics Anonymous –.
But here I won’t tell about every unsustainable thing in my life, but I tell you only about one particular episode.
This post had to be written straight after the New Year’s day, but I hadn’t the courage until the moment that, wandering among the blogs I follow, I was encouraged to this confession by one of Sabrine d’Aubergine’s very hilarious blog posts, this one. In this post Sabrine tells of her misadventure during the last day of 2009, when she had to fight for cooking a unlucky turkey.
‘Unlucky’ because during the Season the misfortune falls over all the animals that arrive on our table. And generally it’s not that we are taken from an unstoppable killer instinct… as usual, following traditions, we aren’t unaware of what we are consuming.
But really I can’t say a word.
Many of you readers know that I’m not completely vegetarian. My sweet mate is, without any stop, since he was a teenager. When I met him, totally being in love, I started to follow him for a pair of years. But my determination was insufficient and, at my first illness – I had an operation to my appendix – I turned back to the ‘normal’ diet.
But I must say that I never continued to eat meat daily (and fish more rarely) as I did when I lived with my family.
Even now, my diet is almost vegetarian ‘cause I live with my partner. I eat meat or fish if tempted by a friend or if I’m outdoor and there aren’t other edible alternatives to the usual tomato and mozzarella sandwich or to the usual piece of pizza.
I had the possibility to avoid the problem on the table of the New Year’s Eve dinner. And I didn’t.
It wasn’t really a proper big dinner. It was a simple dinner shared in four and the two fellows diner belonged to the family of him: his mother and his great-aunt.
Being yet in crisis in choosing the menu, we were afraid of mistaking and so we decided to take suggestion for cooking from his mother.
The tradition to eat fish during the last day of the year was prevalent and as first course was chosen ‘linguine at the mantis shrimps sauce’, which shellfishes could be eaten as main course with other more classical meals. There and then I approved unconscious – I’ve always been fond of shellfishes –. Irish would have had his vegetarian option: a very good dish with ‘linguine, cheese and pepper’.
The morning of the 31st December, we went to buy the necessary and, avoiding to go in the crowded market, we preferred to go to a near fishmonger of which we got good winds. In the little shop there wasn’t a big selection, but the shrimps were there, in a little quantity right for us. They were live and we thought that it was a good sign of freshness and quality. And having to cook them in the evening, I hoped that they would have lost vitality soon.
On the contrary, in the late afternoon, they were still very alive and they twisted on themselves in the attempt to defend with nippers and trying to move towards water. :(
I was designed to wash, clean and cook them, things that I never did before and I did under supervision. I started with the three / four of those that didn’t give a sign of life and I hoped that in time the others wouldn’t have moved anymore.
But I cannot say how it ended because many of you should suffer. It’s enough to say that I cried in secret.
At dinner I tried to eat two or three of them, but I had got a lump in my throat until I didn’t see them on the table anymore. And still I feel guilty.
Forgive me, you that never would have done! I swear that if it was only for me I would have run to throw the shrimps to the sea!
Now I have a only belief, I’m sure that I won’t buy a live animal to eat anymore. I would not have to buy meat or fish anymore for me and eventual guests too and I would avoid to eat them when I’m outside, but I feel difficult to put obstacles in place since now. But this episode was a lesson for me and it is enough to start a year with the idea to renounce something and to respect living being.
And I wanted to end this confession, bringing everyone to reflect on real value of traditions.
We often consider what we do for tradition as good and ‘sacred’. As opposed I learned at my expense that live is more sacred, even that one of a mute and apparently insignificant shellfish that isn’t surely essential for our diet.

Beyond the sea...
We came in October, and it is already autumn ... until a few days ago it seemed even winter and, instead, last Sunday a beautiful sun rose in the afternoon! Just when we wanted it!
In fact Irish and me had planned to visit a park in Riccione, Oltremare, now famous for the advertising of the “curious dolphin”.
Well, I don’t like too much seeing animals reared in captivity, especially for a bad memory I have of a safari-zoo, when I was a child, but our friend, that works there, encouraged us to visit it. He told us of the variety of animals, of the structure of their host, of the organization that follows them and of the stiffness in checks and care... So, to go there, we waited a weekend free of commitments and now of the tourism chaos of previous months. And within me I went with great curiosity especially for the dolphins, animals that I had not ever seen before in my life!
The structure is really good, nestled in the green hills upstream of Riccione, without intrusive construction: the only quite visible are the building of 3d cinema and the one hosting “The time journey” and “Hippocampus”, but very integrated in patterns of the surrounding land. On entering someone could remain unpleasantly impressed by the ticket prices, but I can guarantee that, knowing what is behind and having visited the park, all money are worth to be spent!
We go to a sort of garden named “Lungofiume”. Here there are essences and other types of vegetation planted to recall the natural river environments. You may recognize them through the signs and explanations. There are also some objects of farming culture exposed, with surrounded plantations of grapes and fruit trees, typical of the area.
Through this avenue we arrive at the true entrance where a large sundial lying on the floor marks the current time and prelude the imminent time travel in nature. Around here you could find all the information points, refreshment and shopping.
But we are directed to greet our friend at the “Dolphin Lagoon”. And there was love at first sight: these creatures are magnificent! They swim in the big blue tub and seem a fun world! It is true that these dolphins are curious, so much that one of them, the smallest, sees the move and stop at a distant point, but in our direction, and floats on one side, so that with one eye observe us, and to draw our attention on him and getting noticed, begins to make strange pop! In practice he seems giving us welcome!
Already I know that these particular animals so later will make me feel incredible emotions!
So after the greetings we begin our tours behalf, we should do it fairly quickly because the shows are programmed and rotated seamless continuity.
We dedicate the first visit of fifteen minutes to the facility that houses the permanent exhibit on seahorses. These are beautiful little creatures that seem almost mythological. It makes a strange effect to comply in aquariums, that must be constantly kept under control. Because these animals are very sensitive and they need very specific food and habitat. Some species are truly incredible, like ‘leaf dragons’ that appear that fake vegetation in aquariums of our homes, or that little seahorses that are tiny creatures that appear to be a mini-planet, along with other very bizarre shaped invertebrates!
Leaving this round structure we can go to underground floors, where you can see a sort of ‘primordial greenhouse’ (called “Darwin”) and you can admire the fish and other marine species that belong to our seas closely, in the “Bay of breeds”, and magnificent huge reconstruction along the corridors. Through them you pass in front of the large windows that allow to observe the dolphins underwater, until you get to the truth outdoor park.
Then we head quickly towards the “Farm”, a group of houses and adjoining stable which faces an arena that is packed with people. The show begins with the song of a rooster and a nice factor begins to tell merrily the typical day of the farm letting know of many animals, the more unusual ones too like the hedgehog, the porcupine, the ferret, the pelican and two particular raptors. The laughs are many because the factor involves the audience and jokes about phobias of individuals harmless animals!
So the first hour in the park is passed. From the farm a journey that goes in the green and into other buildings begins. It’s sort of reconstruction of the Po Delta in miniature where lakes and rivers are home to geese, ducks, turtles, fish and reptiles and sometimes even species of migratory birds, typical of humid environments in Emilia-Romagna. It is easy to observe all these people hidden in viewpoints between the marsh reeds or from high wooden cabins.
Moving between these buildings and picnic areas we arrive in a moment to “Moulin of the Owl”, in front of which in a large grassy square raptors will perform in flight! A marvellous show to the eyes of those who, like us, appreciate the falconry as a moment of discovery: they are mysterious animals that would otherwise be almost inaccessible to our eyes! The falconers are teachers that inspire the flight of these birds with incredible wing openings, stratospheric speed and supernatural precision! There are hawks, buzzards, owls, eagles and even vultures and you can see them even a very close distance! Every time I admire the majesty of these animals, I think of us, as human, we should feel humble and small in their presence and often we do the opposite!
After the spectacle of raptors and a fun zigzag between lakes it comes perhaps the most beautiful part of our ‘journey’ the show of... dolphins!
We place among the medium ranks of the large arena, where our friend advised us to stay (then we’ll understand why), and wait the beginning. Dolphins begin to head from the middle of water because they have noticed increased human presence on tiers. They seem euphoric, and just approaching the handlers for the rest buckets with their meal, close to edges of the pan, they begin to make jumps. When the music starts and the presenter gave performance the opening, we remain in open mouth to see the timing, the big jumps, with which all together leave the tub and return in!
I can not describe how beautiful the next forty minute were... is not so much for the choreography that these incredible creatures do – thanks to the skill of trainers – but it is incredible the understanding that they demonstrate and this capacity to understand and of fun almost make them seem human beings!
I do not deny that certainly there were not splashing water, came up to us, to wet my eyes, but little tears! I would not have ever believed so much enthusiasm in front of the spectacle of trained animals. And now I know that these animals are not only there to fun people but they are often retrieved from situations dangerous in their environment and compromising their very lives. So they are loved, cuddled, fed and cared for with such care (and also with enormous costs) that we do not imagine! Like Mary G. the puppy of ‘grampus griseus’ – a particular species of dolphin – recovered in 2005 from the port of Ancona, who is now with the other dolphins and seems to be now one of them. They, too, we know by our friend, live our own feelings, love, friendship, sympathy and hate! Every visitor would touch, embrace them ... but they are not toys and nature tells us that it is better that they are able by themselves to express their affection for us, by the way they behave!
At the end of the show we do not have time to recover us by emotion, because there is the last show in 3d cinema. This is a half-hour documentary about the bottom of the seas where forests of kelp reign. Even this thrill for me was new, really an effective way to feel part of a habitat that otherwise would be impossible to visit!
At the end of the projection is already 18 and the park closes! Damn! We lost a lot of things! But surely we’ll come back!
In short, among many theme parks and entertainment, it’s precisely worth to make a quick trip to this oasis “beyond the sea”. Now our thoughts turn often to dolphins, raptors, seahorses and many animals that we observed, and to our dear friend that pushed us to approach this world! A heartfelt thanks and a greeting to our new friends!

After the spectacle of raptors and a fun zigzag between lakes it comes perhaps the most beautiful part of our ‘journey’ the show of... dolphins!
