How about you this winter a little crazy?
Heavy rainstorms and long gray days without cold but with so much humidity. The rain has caused so much damage throughout Italy and beyond.
We expected a more conventional winter, here in Romagna, where we used a few years ago to have a few days of heavy snowfall, even on the coast. A little snow was seen but the walls of my house are devoured by wet stains that we will somehow solve.
But this is another story.
Meanwhile, out in the garden with these mild temperatures, you can already see the first violets and some daisies. Trees began to sprout and the birds are already much more noisy!
And I want to talk about them!
Usually, as you may have already read about this blog in many posts, we always tried to give some hospitality to our little friends with feathers, giving them a bit of food during the colder months.
Also this year we have not failed to leave crumbs around sweets, fresh or dried fruit and a special food bought for both granivorous and insectivores.
And since the first day of this month I had to organize once again a workshop for kids and their dad, as a volunteer of Mani Tese and in collaboration with the Families’ Centre, I thought it would be nice to build with them feeders for birds with recycled materials, just knowing that the days at the turn of January and February are (usually) colder ones.
In fact it was not just that, but the workshop was done and participants were happy to take home a more or less complex feeder made by their hands, especially dads who have been really busy putting their inventiveness! I do not know if they will have used them really...
But I show you the particular model that I created – other models were more or less inspired others seen on the web – with these materials: tetrapak, plastic bottle, fabric, plastic tray, polystyrene tray and metal edges of the cocoa boxes.
The idea came really to me seeing a feeder sold on the market but it was not made with recycled materials. When my companion and me saw it in a catalog we immediately associate the image to the form of drinks cartons and from there the step to realize was quite short.
With this I would like to make it clear that those who often think they are not good enough in manual jobs or enough “creative”, can practice themselves looking at what is around. If you want it, before getting groped to buy it, try to imagine if you can reproduce it in some way with materials that your waste bin can easily provide. Our plastic, paper and often unrecycling bins may be true mines!
This is what we tried to convey to the parents of these children and I think that we have succeeded, or at least hope to!!!

Bentornata a... me! / Welcome back to... me! :)
However, the whiteness of the snow, which covered everything, making all beautiful, revealed soon as the air is polluted.
Those days I walked a lot, often trying to reach places, passing through points less clogged with snow, and realized that the slopes of the heavy traffic roads – where snow had not even been touched – were covered by a gray veil, just after a couple of days since it had stopped snowing ...
Think what we breathe!
To say nothing of what remains on the street corners where the snowplows passed ... a mixture of black sludge thick of particulate that is a little creepy!
Another thing that made everybody think a little – especially those who found themselves in the midst of the big snowfall – is the rediscovery of the essential things: the most essential basic foodstuffs, those that were immediately snapped up on the shelves of the only open supermarket, or water that many have been found to have no more due to burst pipes, or the light ceased to exist even here on the sea in stormy days ...
We are a fragile species on this earth and maybe we should learn more from all these things!
Restate sintonizzati! ;)

No, do not worry, I have not been buried by the snow!
But actually we were very worried about! I really like the snow, more than rain, but I must admit that it was not easy to continue the same old routine with all that snow. Eventually, we managed, but I can not believe to my eyes when still today I look the horizon towards inland and see the hills of Rimini still white!

And some overlap of snow still does not want to melt! Fortunately, beautiful days are coming ...
I am sure, however, that we will remember this big snowfall with a little of nostalgia, for the next years – but of course only with regard to the pristine landscape that it has given us! –.

But changing the subject ...
After the snow there was a very small ecological event, to M'illumino di Meno, but this year I have experienced little, finding myself outside home.
For me there was only a quarter of an hour of darkness, when I came back, where I moved in my house with my cranked LED flashlight ... Well, it was interesting here also understand how difficult it is to live without light, especially if you're preparing the suitcase to leave ...

Yes, because the next day, strictly in car-pooling with friends, Irish and me left for a note Ligurian coastal town, to go see our favorite musicians ...
Some of you already knows my second cybernauta activities, as administrator of this website and its community on Facebook ...
So I could not avoid to attend the event of the Sanremo Music Festival, although, in truth, with the chaos that was there – due to overcrowded place and the presence of some special guests! –, I do not think I'll just make this experience again. However, I will remember it forever, especially for old and new friends with whom I lived very intense emotions!
And I'll also remember last Sunday for a happy reappearance of the sun, which made me discover a beautiful city with a ecological heart, despite everything!

domenica 5 febbraio 2012
Settimana bianca in montagna??? / Skiing holiday in the mountains??
Not at all, from now on you can also ski on the beaches
of the Adriatic Coast!
And I’m not kidding!
After a week of uncertainty among sleet, water and snow
storm and frosts, this last weekend has brought us so much snow that seems to
be at a ski area!
Here in Rimini, today, Sunday, Feb. 5, on the beach there
are 25 cm of snow! It snowed continuously for more than 36 hours and the
temperatures are constantly below 0° C.
Do not believe us? Watch the slideshow below!
But we could not complain much ... who is the hinterland
of Romagna is much worse. In some places the snow has now reached two meters
and army, civil defense, volunteers are in action to shovel and give help to
those in need.
In short, the winter we all have been waiting more or
less a month ago has arrived. Late, but it is being felt! The rest of Italy is
not far behind us and on social networks comments and photos of snow scenes are
going crazy from everywhere ...
ciuffolotto fringuello!!! Bellissimo!
There is always the surprise and joy at seeing all white
... but there are also some very positive aspects. Some people suffer the cold
... for example, wild animals are the ones most affected.
Have you noticed these days a ever more frequently
flutter? When it snows we see birds close to our homes that we have never seen
before!
Just recently, I have seen on our roofs a bird of prey
flying... hard to say if it was a buzzard or a screech owl or barn owl – his
head was rather large and he has an elongated tail, but it’s been a while and I
could not understand what species he was –.
This morning, however, we lifted our head for having
heard a lot of strange cry and saw a flock of herons in flight going south!
As our mangers – which for so much snow we had to put all
in the same spot where the birds are accustomed to finding food – have been
besieged with sparrows, blackbirds, great tits, robins ... and now there is a
last newcomer: a bullfinch chaffinch! Beautiful!
You can not just be spectators in this fluttering! During
the day we replenished several times the feeders with seeds, granola, dried
fruit, crumbs and Babbalù balls. It seems that it is never enough, but luckily
we turn around and see that there are other neighbors to help feathered
friends! In addition to our home front and even further down the same street
many of them have put together mangers, like this:
:(
It’s nice to see so many people come to life to help
animals overcome this cold and thankfully the network is enlivening a great
word of mouth recommendations to build feeders with makeshift materials. But this
morning, while we were around to capture this strange landscape I have also
heard, alas, noises similar to gunshots. I would not, indeed, I dare not
imagine that there are ruthless hunters who take advantage of this tragic
situation to kill innocent and helpless little birds! :(
Giornate come queste dovrebbero farci riflettere a quanto
rispettandola!
Days like these should give us pause to think that we are
dependent on the climate and nature that surrounds us. Is there in you anger
with the simple fact that with all this snow we should go back to our
activities, fussing and running as usual? To my mind, when nature puts us to
the test, she throws us a message: we should better adapt to her rhythms, her seasons, her climate, respecting her!

News al volo e amici in volo / News on the fly and flying friends
We do not know if it will snow here on the sea – snow is late here, compared to previous years – but we are preparing a most intense cold.
So, we will give more attention to sustaining our friends birds who come every day to feed on what we offer them: biscuits, sweets, seeds, crumbs, dried fruit and various cereals ...
So, as promised I wanted to show what we prepared before leaving for the Christmas holidays, in order to not leave the birds without food.
giorni successivi.
How fast the weeks go! And I still have a lot of things to tell. But, meanwhile, things happen more, so many that I cannot pretend to hide and speak only of the past.
This first month of 2012 is already ended, and every day there is always something that attracts my attention, there is always something new to do every moment and always something to think about for the next days.

come.
Like all those people who are a little more environmentally conscious, I couldn't avoid thinking on the tragedy of the Giglio Island, a so absurd and unthinkable thing, not for what happened but for how it happened. I almost felt involved because two of the missing people – I have still never got to know – shared a dear friend with me ...
When a disaster is felt so close and it affects your loved ones is easier to feel emotions such as anger and sadness. But a bitter conclusion still remains in me: the absurdity of the humans, with all they weaknesses and ambitions, when they want to show they are bigger than nature ...

petrolio!!!
What about our manifested dependence on oil? These days I heard so many rumors about the shortage of fuel due to many strikes ... empty shelves of supermarkets, big cities suddenly without the usual traffic, queues at gas stations. And to my surprise this week there was the boom in presence of passengers on the bus that I take to go to the office in the morning. Well, maybe some withdrawal from oil should be good for us!

organizzato qui a Rimini dall’Università Aperta “Giulietta Masina e Federico
attorno!
Changing the subject, there are less distressing things that happen, fortunately. As the new class that I'm taking in, organized here in Rimini by the Open University "Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina," which has as its topic "Waste as a new resource: management and treatment." It's a course of 8 lessons taught by Simona Bertini and Edolo Minarelli, both engineers directly involved in managing the entire waste cycle in the province of Rimini.
When I knew it, I did not hesitate to join for the curiosity to learn and something more than what I already know. And I think this is a great opportunity, because it is increasingly rare that such notions are made available to ordinary citizens! So, soon I'll be even more up to date and ready to answer all your questions on recycling and everything around!

intraprendere in quelle occasioni!
Other events I would like to remind everyone to mark on the agenda for the next few months are: the next "M'illumino di meno" to be held February 17 and the "National Week of Porta la Sporta" that will be between 14 and 22 April. But we will have time to update on what to do on those occasions!

Another wonderful thing that happened to me recently: I was interviewed by the dear blogger friend Elena for Madreterra's Weblog. I take this opportunity to thank you again her and invite you to read the post if you still do not know all about my blog!

intenso.
uccellini senza cibo.
Instead I would like to dwell for a moment on this planet that lately more and more manifests signs of impatience with the crazy weather and earthquakes (fortunately not come here). And what are the causes?Magnetic storms? Pollution? The fact is that in recent days the temperature is undergoing dramatic changes. These last days of January are the famous "blackbird's days," as reminiscent of some posts of my bloggers friends Cristella and Lunarossa.
So, as promised I wanted to show what we prepared before leaving for the Christmas holidays, in order to not leave the birds without food.
e utilizzato la particolare mangiatoia proprio come immaginavamo!
We created the now famous "Babbalù's ball", an ENPA recommendation, then deepened by Luby, which was very clicked on the web. This has been a favorite of our friend Robin.
Since the size of the ball was quite a bit big and there was the danger of breaking, we put them in amesh bag. To avoid that our friends get stuck (like Luby recommended), we stuck some sticks into so birds could lean with legs and caught hold onto the net. And it worked! We observed the robin in our back and we were very happy because he particularly liked and used the manger just like we imagined!

We also put at their disposal a new covered crib, full of seeds and a smaller always covered one, with water. These last two courtesy of my colleague who is an expert in bird life and gave me as well as suggestions for making the "ball" and also seeds and specific feed for blackbirds.
In short what a coming and going, this winter, with feathers and a chorus of "tweets"! Fortunately, we believe them to keep us happy!

Un allegro, bianco, e soffice Natale!!! / Enjoy a Happy, White and Soft Christmas!!!
![]() |
| La compostiera sommersa dalla neve... |
Ebbene, sì, ridendo e scherzando siamo quasi arrivati al... Natale!
Well, yes, laughing and joking with us, here we are nearly to... Christmas!
And the atmosphere there is all: last week lots of snow fell!
Since I'm here, it's the first time I see it falling so much, close to the sea.
Now is slowly melting, but I cannot forget some moments spent in solitude, waiting for the train delay, returning home from the office, in a slow falling snow with a great silence around me, humming Christmas songs to myself. Or the long walk to work, with sinking frozen feet in the snow of a park, but with a warm heart full of happiness. And again on a shining white Saturday morning, Irish and me, illuminated by the sun, on the the snow dunes overlooking the sea!
True, there were tense moments for the inability of travel (everything becomes more complicated by public transport) and fatigue at the end of a busy day. There were moments of confusion, in the city center looking as a mad for some gifts without waste, not trivial or unwanted gifts.
But they added sweet moments, like making again decorations of the Christmas tree, the scent of gingerbread made from my love, and an infinite number of flights and songs of birds, around, looking for something to eat.
Right here I would like to open a small parenthesis and sweet, the dear friend Luby (from the blog L'Eco del Mondo) is collecting ideas on how to make a manger for our hungry feathered friends.
I want to put my little contribution. A shelter was built with pieces from an old wood DIY bottle holder by Ikea that is no more sold.
There Irish and me place regularly sweet and bread crumbs, (especially cookies and cake), seeds and dried fruit. There come to see robins, great tits, sparrows and blackbirds.
This year was also revised slightly by the black redstart.
I'm not sure if the current visitor robin is Arancino... is still too shy.
In any case, I might say that it is very difficult to accustom birds to a crib like that. They are initially very suspicious, but sometimes the frost and snow are so that they come closer. It takes a lot of patience, one of my new colleague says – she is super-expert in birding –!
I therefore thank Luby, for reminding me about this.
Unfortunately at the moment I can not offer better pictures, but as soon as I will have time, I'll post.
Rejoiced therefore by sound and harmonious "tweet tweet" we are going to spend a happy Christmas with our loved ones.

Our hope is that everyone can find sweet moments to spend with people we love, find serenity in everyday things, find smiles and hugs, gifts and find warmth in small things done with the heart, finding a word or a thought who is far away and so desperately needs.
Basically this is Christmas!

Un bianco risveglio... / A white awakening...
Do you remember the hedgehog a few days ago? Well, perhaps I understood why he was here. We know that animals have an incredible sensitivity for the weather ... perhaps he was sniffing an air of ... snow and was looking for a warm place where to stay on these cold new days! And here this morning to our sleepy eyes images of... snow were presented!
Well, the snow came so far, a slight white mantle held for a few hours the gardens and sand of the beach ... we leave you to the vision of these pictures taken by IrishPeople ... and we hope to see the snow again, perhaps on Christmas time!
