Il colore di oggi è... il rosso!!! / Red... the colour of the day!!!

Dove eravamo rimasti? Ah, sì, all’incontro speciale.

Here, I decided to take advantage of an afternoon of apparent calm, like this, to restore contacts with my world.
I'm still here, huh! And I have not forgotten you at all! But in my life something has been replaced by new priorities, while on my desk notes and flyers on things that I should have shared with you a long ago, are accumulating.

Today I had you in mind, so I decided to write a little post about my curious breakfast this morning, and I will, but first I have to tell you about something that happened a few hours ago that lighten up my day. A special meeting ...

I just came back for a day and a half in my beloved homeland, Puglia, to meet up with my my sister –back from London for few days–, my brother –who has just celebrated his birthday–, my mother –who needed hugs– and... my father.
Yes, even with him who –as you may have guessed– has passed away since almost three months.

Three months very difficult to describe, with a very restless mood, changeable, sometimes as leaden clouds that cover the sky these days, sometimes as light as a leaf that leaves its tree and is taken away from wind.

At this time I am doing a great journey within myself, I'm almost compelled to do so. Many things take a back seat, many more appear and you can see better what is most important, what is essential. I can read signs –or at least those that seem to me being signs–, tracks that guide me in one direction rather than another.

Where did I left you? Ah yes, at the special meeting. On a special path, one of the cemetery where my brother and I were going this morning to remember my father, where we had left him the last time. As we hurried on cobblestones –the first siren sounded already for closing time– a small nose with four legs came straight to us and as we approached her we find that she was ... a fox!

A red and gray fox, with a mouthful of flesh and bone, stopped for a moment to look suspicious at us and then five meters from us diverted her path while continuing to look at us, without running away. What a treat!!!

She is probably a usual visitor to that place because, although suspicious, she was not running away. Probably someone feeds her. But I looked over this and I immediately thought of the story of my sister, who just a few days ago met a fox in the heart of London! And, incidentally, a fox was drawn on the back cover of the book I gave to my brother for his birthday.

In his travels between the school, where he worked, and his house my father often encountered foxes on his way.

In short, something that makes me think... it was really a nice meeting, which left me with a big smile inside!

Per Daniza... / To Daniza...

I have no words for your sad end, I would not have ears to listen to this news that left me so incredulous.
I already haven't known and probably will never know the love that a mother can have for her children, but I know it is a great and immense love, a love that overcomes every obstacle, defeating every fear...
We humans should know this even better than any other species on this planet.
Precisely for this reason I do not and will never understand the injustice that took you away from your bear cubs.
Why we humans are allowed to feel all the possible and imaginable emotions and exalt them as if they were our prerogative, while you, other inhabitants of this Earth – for us – you can not, you do not have the right to feel affection, love, joy, misery, distance, fear, loss, desire, wonder, jealousy, serenity, belonging? Why?
Since we are young your image keeps us company in our cradle, you have always been the image of tenderness.
Now, as adults, we forget, and we treat you as useless toys, decorations like to move in this or in that other park at will, then get rid of you, when your presence is more cumbersome and takes ownership of what once was just your home.
Shame on us.
It shakes my heart to think of your cubs, alone, now, at the mercy of... inhuman beings!

Com’è dura… la vita nella natura! /how hard is life in… nature!

Although the temperatures have not yet stabilized and hot sunny days are alternating with gray and stormy skies, spring goes on and nature is taking its course under our eyes, even near our home.

Tell me that it does not happen only to me to be woken up early in the morning by the deafening chorus of blackbirds singing.
Then I look up at the sky and see it cut from the speedy flight of swallows.
Later in the evening when I go to put the
recycling bin out, suddenly my attention is taken by a clamorous cackling of geese flying high in the blue, drawing doubles and triples "V".
Or coming back, always late in the evening from a meeting, on the side of the road you see
a unwise hedgehog that lingers to cross.

And so, in addition to these episodes which you observe sometimes by chance, there are those that leave you a bit puzzled, because you feel as you are part of this nature ...

Like that pair of redstarts – still alive after the bad weather of recent days and still intent on building a nest – who must contend with a cheeky blackbird – perhaps the same one that fed his little chick days ago – who begins to sing swaggering for a long time in front of the tile that redstarts chose as a home, preventing them from completing their work.

Or as the pair of magpies that occasionally but recently has flown strangely very low, on the branches of our plum tree, to scream almost in an act of revenge against the neighbor's cat ... probably they had the same destiny of the parents of Chicco and Spillo, remember them? To see these magpies continuously call their chick (or chicks) jumping from one roof to another and from one tree to a bush I was a little sad for me. Now it's almost two days they seem to have stopped searching for.

Finally we had the company of a bright green lizard who had gone to take refuge in a plastic pot that I emptied out the ground, leaving within a few pieces of pottery and a squared stone. You could saw her occasionally peeking out from beneath the pieces. She, in turn, watched you, motionless, but without escaping. She was so tender. Until yesterday, a hot day beyond belief, I went out to wet the pots and the lizard was no longer moving... so I got it gently with two wooden sticks and I put her under the shadow of the medlar, in the grass, covering her with a leaf.
This morning she was gone. In my mind I want to think that she wasn't completely dead and she had gradually resumed, instead of thinking that the cat has robbed her... who knows. I hope to see her around the garden again!

But how hard is life in nature!

“Passata è la tempesta...” / “The storm has passed...”

Here are the days when you do not know how to get out ... the sun comes out but then suddenly clouds are over, then hail falls and it’s lightning across the leaden sky and the ruckus breaks ...
And the weather forecast never guess in full.

As the 26th of April, a day that they said to be catastrophic about the weather, so everyone had abandoned any slightest desire to organize something to enjoy the festivities: in spite of all odds, a pale sun that occasionally peeked between gray clouds, at the end decided to come out and made the hot afternoon and enjoyable for everyone, even for the animals ...

So that afternoon my partner and me saw one of the many wonders of nature, without going so far. We just opened the windows of our house to let some hot air in and suddenly the festive chirping of all types of birds flooded happily in the rooms.

So we found a pair of redstarts that came to make their nest in the corner of the tile of the our neighbors’ roof. I recognized the red-orange tail of the first that just took off from a tree and then I followed the path outlined in the sky, until I realized that they were in two and took turns to enter the cavity of this tile. To confirm that they were two redstarts, my partner tried to take a photo of them using a telephoto lens, and here they are:

Later I thought I'd go out in the garden to finish the work of sowing in pots of arugula, chicory, basil, parsley and sage. As usual, I picked up from the compost bin a bit of mature compost to mix it with the soil that was already there by the last year, so to give it a little more sprint.
Leaving the side lid of the compost bin leaning in a large earthenware bowl in my garden, I immediately heard the song of a blackbird over my head, resting on the branches of a near oak. As soon as I moved away, the blackbird glided down the lid, where there was stuck a bit of compost with lots of earthworms. Behind him, a “little” (but not too little) blackbird incessantly claimed that jelly from his father, who, after filled the his beak with earthworms, did not hesitate to feed the son.
So without being afraid of me and my partner, the two blackbirds had enjoyed a great dinner of worms ... served on the plate! :)
Here are the shots of the two blackbirds, the old black with orange beak, the young gray with black dots ... we were not able to photograph them in the act of feeding ... but what a tenderness!

Now I’m a bit worried about these little “gardenmates” after the storm passed ... I wonder if they survived! We hope that tomorrow they will celebrate with their festive chirping again!

L’estate… in tutti i sensi/ Summer… in every sense

un souvenir da Ravenna
/ a memento from Ravenna

This little heart is a gadget made by hand with recycled materials, memento of “Let’s Grow Another Economy” which was held last weekend in Ravenna (I will tell you of this event in the next post, trust me). It is dedicated to Chicco, surely you read in the previous posts.

Speriamo bene!
Chicco passed away. He was ill and his situation worsened until his death two weeks ago. This bad news saddened me a lot but luckily I found out that Spillo, the other little magpie, reacted better and with the help of MARICLA, has learned to feed himself and grew. It should be released in these days and I’m waiting news. Let’s hope so!

This morning, thanks to favorable weather at last, I was out of work in the garden and I enjoyed the sun and the constant chirping of small tits and blackbirds. Of the latter we have really a nice little family that comes to visit: the male blackbird is often searching for food in our garden and gives it to his two little ones, which are still gray and speckled but already able to fly. These two hop to follow him, or sometimes they are just brave enough to venture out. You can see they are still inexperienced, do not run away quickly from us, in fact sometimes they stay to observe us! Perhaps someone has told them that we will never hurt! :)
So much that today that Dad blackbird was more reckless than usual, and while I was repotting some plants, he fell a meter from me and began to peck the worms that I dropped out of the compost, turning to look at me every now and saying goodbye with a shrill “ciu”. Then away with his beak full of prey!

It is nice to see around that nature takes its course: the medlar tree loaded with fruit this year more than usual; roses exploding in vibrant colors; lizards crossing from time to time under the sun, the grasses that sway among the thousand lilac flowers of common wood sorrel and pansies that persist despite the late May!

Dall’anno scorso sopravvivono rughetta selvatica e prezzemolo.
Maybe this year we can also have a fairly small field of clovers and a small harvest from my garden in pots. This year I provided in advance myself with ground, pulled out some compost, and passed in review all seeds in surplus from last year. Then, in March – thanks to the wonderful equipment given to me by Paolo at Christmas – I planted different radishes, sculpit – a traditional herb used for cooking here in Romagna –, zucchini, tomatoes – we try again! – and basil. Wild rocket and parsley are surviving since last year.

/ my new garden tools
radicchi, stridoli e una piantina di zucchine
/ radishes, stridoli and a little plant of zucchini

piante di pomodori e ancora zucchine
/ tomatoes and zucchini plants again

piccoli germogli di basilico
/ little sprouts of basil

Then a dear friend from Ippocampo, gave us a nice plant of blackberries, which has adapted very well here and is now growing rapidly. I planted it in a beautiful large vase with a sunflower. I think that the two are competing to see who grows more!

/ between blackberries and sunflower
who will grow more?

Not satisfied, from my trusted greengrocer I bought two aromatic plants, a mint and thyme. They smell amazing and today I repotted those too.

Finally I renovated the ground in a flowerpot where I planted flower seeds – perhaps late –, donated by my dear friend Ele. They are a bit special, because they help the lives of “beneficial insects”. We hope that in time they’ll give color to the garden!

In short, I’m a bit tired but satisfied. The garden, with all its sounds, colors and scents, makes me feel better. Lately many sad things are happening.
So we hope that the summer will arrive soon, in every sense!

See you soon with the story of the event in Ravenna! ;)

Fioriscono le iniziative… / Initiatives blooming…

... in the middle of spring – even with this crazy weather –! But before updating, I want to let you know what happened during those days.

I left you with Chicco's story, which incredibly had a following. Two days after the rescue of the little magpie, we ended up saving the second smallest of the pair, which I think is now gone, having been unable to caring for the two chicks in their nest. In fact, the second (Spillo), was saved by my hand from the danger of the road, where he fell, and then from the clutches of two cats, this time! To rescue him – not easy, being the second most lively as you can see from the photos which was not able to shoot – we operated the same way, taking the second smallest to the Wildlife Recovery Centre, run by the non-profit organization MARICLA.
I took advantage of it to know how Chicco was. He was not there because they took away him for controls. Poor chick, he has a skin disease. Perhaps too itchy for the two little magpies, which fell for it from the nest. We hope that through the efforts of volunteers they can return to make their first attempts at flying!
Meanwhile I will continue to support and inform about their health.

Among the many things of this eventful period, I lost the usual annual edition of “Ecomia”, during which there were various initiatives to which Mani Tese attended with the sale of second-hand clothing items and accessories.

I then lost the “Green Night” of Forlì (you can read here). An event that I should not be missed, as creative hooked with eco-sustainability! Did you join it there? Tell me in your comments!
Then this Sunday was dedicated to fans of cycling and clean air. Here, too many initiatives organized by UISP of Rimini and the other many bike and sport associations. Unfortunately the weather is too bad today ... I wonder how it went!

I do not know how many things I also missed, but I do not lose heart, the best is yet to come!

The next weekend is to spend absolutely all in Ravenna, where he held the first edition of “Let's Grow Another Economy”, the feast of fair trade and solidarity economy!
This I can’t definitely miss it, because from Friday evening to Sunday there will be a succession of shows, seminars, concerts, workshops, meetings, walks, dinners, parades, all seasoned with games, auctions, fashion shows and ... swop! Download here the schedule!
Well, perhaps you don’t remember well the Swop Fair where I was some time ago, go and read it again to understand the enthusiasm with which I came that time from Ravenna. Yes, the “Global Village” in Ravenna is always the promoter of these great events, creative and full of positivity great minds united. This year I want to go back there to know more about them to let me be influenced by this great wave of change!

See you there?
I hope so. Otherwise, stay tuned with the upcoming June!

Allora scatta l’operazione salvataggio.
Fortunatamente me ne sono subito accorta.

It’s Saturday, late morning, I’m at home, at my computer despite out there is more than a summer day. The cheerful chirping of birds don’t take me away from that hypnotic thing, if not for the incessant cawing of a few to more magpies, surely perched on one of the tall pines that surround our home.
My companion is back from work, it’s almost noon and soon we will work to prepare lunch. While we tell about the things that happened in the morning I spontaneously say: “Listen to that racket of magpies!” Actually all that “crat-crat” makes me worry, because animals are very hyper-sensitive to disruption of the climate and the earth ... but then Paul (aka Irish) reassures me: “But no, that is out there is a chick magpie fell in the garden of our neighbors.”
“Ah, that’s why!” But this does not reassure me at all, even I run out to see where he is.
Here it is “Chicco!” (I call it instinctively), he is on the ground, frightened, on the grass of the neighbor’s yard next to the wall that separates it from ours. Magpies Mom and Dad jump from branch to branch of pine, high up, screaming “crat-crat-crat” continuously.
Then it starts the save operation.
It must be said that our area is very populated with cats. A cat in our stable, another where a neighbor's dropped the baby magpie, two cats of our front neighbors and then there are often other visits, given that in our road there is just a whole family of cats more or less looked after.
So first of all we must keep an eye on the baby, preserving him for not being attacked by any of those cats. Our neighbors, temporarily absent, there can’t be helpful.
So let’s see how to get the little chick more visible so that parents can see from above.
We take a little long branch and try to push him but he takes shelter under a bush. We try to call him out by giving him nothing but oats, he hops a bit, not able to fly and he takes shelter under the leaves. In the meantime, we know if the parents have got where he is, because Chicco did not do much to being heard, every now and then emits a “squit” in responding to their alarm calls.
In short, after several attempts we get him on that branch and gently we bring on our side. We put him of the floor and I take worms from my compost trying to feed him. He eats two, then he does not want more. I imagine that the parents had mouthfuls of much good!
So we decide to call the Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals, which is not very far from our house. We find the phone on the web and a person answered. I tried to explain the situation. He explained me that he is so small that it can be dropped because of the big gusts of wind. The magpies rarely descend to the ground. As very suspicious, they are unable to care for their young after they have fallen, as do for example the blackbirds. But their calls is to give them instructions on how to put on guard. The young do not know their predators! So, with the danger of cats there is a risk that this little magpie has not much hope of surviving.
Then he informs us on what to do and there are two possibilities. One is to try putting the baby in an area away from the cats, at the top so it can be reached by the parents, or go to the Recovery Centre.
Honestly, I am upset! We then try to put on a high branch of the great magnolia in our yard, but time to return home to prepare something, Chicco, who tries with hops to climb higher, to be seen by mom and dad, makes a tumble to the ground. Fortunately, I immediately notice. He is ended up on the road!
I worry so that Paul came to help him back into the garden. I meet our beighbor that lets us know that the baby had already dropped from the previous evening, so much so that she forced her two cats at home.
In short, the time to eat something nervously waiting for the Centre’s reopening to the public, we have reluctantly decided to take him there, because, while we had been placed him in a basket for the pruning of garden, Chicco was running to become the prey of pussy who lives in our stable!
So, with the echo of the cries of his parents – the expert made me know that they certainly have a second chick to care – Chicco is brought in a big box with holes, coated on the bottom with leaves, to a new home, where someone will take care and preserve him until he is able to look after himself alone. There are the “angels” who save animals from danger every day. It seems incredible to know that around an urbanized area such as Rimini, there are so many wild animals!
A small starling, the same fate of Chicco, was already waiting for treatment. And then we saw other friends: a deer rescued recently, many other species of birds, including birds of prey (in separate aviaries) and another ... magpie! The latter was perched on a branch (I wonder what his story) and has captured our curiosity to wonder: being in contact with humans has learned to say “hello”! We have we heard with our ears! Unbelievable! I wonder if Chicco will learn to “speak”!
The fact is that I will miss him a lot. We have been together a short time and already I got fond of his “squit” and his black eyes ...
Goodbye Chicco, we hope that you will be well and hope to visit you one day, or better, see you fly freely in the skies!

Settimana bianca in montagna??? / Skiing holiday in the mountains??

Not at all, from now on you can also ski on the beaches of the Adriatic Coast!
And I’m not kidding!
After a week of uncertainty among sleet, water and snow storm and frosts, this last weekend has brought us so much snow that seems to be at a ski area!
Here in Rimini, today, Sunday, Feb. 5, on the beach there are 25 cm of snow! It snowed continuously for more than 36 hours and the temperatures are constantly below 0° C.
Do not believe us? Watch the slideshow below!

But we could not complain much ... who is the hinterland of Romagna is much worse. In some places the snow has now reached two meters and army, civil defense, volunteers are in action to shovel and give help to those in need.
In short, the winter we all have been waiting more or less a month ago has arrived. Late, but it is being felt! The rest of Italy is not far behind us and on social networks comments and photos of snow scenes are going crazy from everywhere ...

Bellissimo!
There is always the surprise and joy at seeing all white ... but there are also some very positive aspects. Some people suffer the cold ... for example, wild animals are the ones most affected.
Have you noticed these days a ever more frequently flutter? When it snows we see birds close to our homes that we have never seen before!
Just recently, I have seen on our roofs a bird of prey flying... hard to say if it was a buzzard or a screech owl or barn owl – his head was rather large and he has an elongated tail, but it’s been a while and I could not understand what species he was –.
This morning, however, we lifted our head for having heard a lot of strange cry and saw a flock of herons in flight going south!
As our mangers – which for so much snow we had to put all in the same spot where the birds are accustomed to finding food – have been besieged with sparrows, blackbirds, great tits, robins ... and now there is a last newcomer: a bullfinch chaffinch! Beautiful!

You can not just be spectators in this fluttering! During the day we replenished several times the feeders with seeds, granola, dried fruit, crumbs and Babbalù balls. It seems that it is never enough, but luckily we turn around and see that there are other neighbors to help feathered friends! In addition to our home front and even further down the same street many of them have put together mangers, like this:

It’s nice to see so many people come to life to help animals overcome this cold and thankfully the network is enlivening a great word of mouth recommendations to build feeders with makeshift materials. But this morning, while we were around to capture this strange landscape I have also heard, alas, noises similar to gunshots. I would not, indeed, I dare not imagine that there are ruthless hunters who take advantage of this tragic situation to kill innocent and helpless little birds! :(

Days like these should give us pause to think that we are dependent on the climate and nature that surrounds us. Is there in you anger with the simple fact that with all this snow we should go back to our activities, fussing and running as usual? To my mind, when nature puts us to the test, she throws us a message: we should better adapt to her rhythms, her seasons, her climate, respecting her!

Io sto con le anatre... / Staying with ducks...

Yes, I stay among the ducks and I enjoy a lot to look at them and listen... I would like to rename this kind ... ridens ducks! :D

Una piccola oasi non lontano dal mare / A little oasis by the sea

Now the summer starts to fly away and relax is just a memory.
I don't miss the scorching sun and blistering heat... maybe I can miss a swim, since from now on it will be very difficult to dive into the increasingly cold sea.
But what I miss most is what I have enjoyed very little this year: the mountain air, the view of the broad lawns and of the green giants in woods...
That's what last "trek-and-run" weekend left me, a weekend spent into the mountains, I'll tell you soon.

Even if all these things are impossible to replicate at zero altitude, fortunately there is some corner of green here, by the sea.
It is in these places that I usually retreat when I miss the mountains or when something goes wrong during my day. Only the green can give me peace of mind and energy...

Normally, those on vacation at the sea hardly walk beyond the coastal railway line – most tourists do not even know the rich historical center of Rimini! –, where small oasis of coolness and peace are kept out of sight but very close to the beach!
I'm talking about urban parks, in some cases, they are real jewels to be preserved.

In particular, I love the "Gelso Park" (Mulberry Park), just in the center of Bellaria, not far from Rimini.
It stretches for 25 hectares near the rail, so it is practically ignored by tourists who are almost always in areas of sea.
There are large grassy meadows alternate with most wooded patches where oaks, birches, pines, cherry trees and other species of trees surround an artificial lake where you can do (alas) sport-fishing.
The area around the lake is a haven for many ducks, common moorhens, frogs... and who knows what other guests!
Around it, the trees are inhabited by several species of bird whose songs you can often hear so different. Sometimes you can do some unusual sightings.

In fact, between July and August, it was here that it happened to meet for the first time a colony of hoopoes...
They are very showy plumage birds but they are very shy and do not approach, but it's great to admire when they take off or open the mane!
Shame not to have a camera on hand...
So, a picnic or a lunch break can be a fun bird-watching to observe the behavior of water birds...

In short, a refuge for animals and a refuge for me. Fortunately, some oasis for us and for our animal friends are still here!

Un allegro, bianco, e soffice Natale!!! / Enjoy a Happy, White and Soft Christmas!!!

La compostiera sommersa dalla neve...

Ebbene, sì, ridendo e scherzando siamo quasi arrivati al... Natale!
Well, yes, laughing and joking with us, here we are nearly to... Christmas!
And the atmosphere there is all: last week lots of snow fell!
Since I'm here, it's the first time I see it falling so much, close to the sea.
Now is slowly melting, but I cannot forget some moments spent in solitude, waiting for the train delay, returning home from the office, in a slow falling snow with a great silence around me, humming Christmas songs to myself. Or the long walk to work, with sinking frozen feet in the snow of a park, but with a warm heart full of happiness. And again on a shining white Saturday morning, Irish and me, illuminated by the sun, on the the snow dunes overlooking the sea!

True, there were tense moments for the inability of travel (everything becomes more complicated by public transport) and fatigue at the end of a busy day. There were moments of confusion, in the city center looking as a mad for some gifts without waste, not trivial or unwanted gifts.

But they added sweet moments, like making again decorations of the Christmas tree, the scent of gingerbread made from my love, and an infinite number of flights and songs of birds, around, looking for something to eat.

Right here I would like to open a small parenthesis and sweet, the dear friend Luby (from the blog L'Eco del Mondo) is collecting ideas on how to make a manger for our hungry feathered friends.
I want to put my little contribution. A shelter was built with pieces from an old wood DIY bottle holder by Ikea that is no more sold.
There Irish and me place regularly sweet and bread crumbs, (especially cookies and cake), seeds and dried fruit. There come to see robins, great tits, sparrows and blackbirds.
This year was also revised slightly by the black redstart.
I'm not sure if the current visitor robin is Arancino... is still too shy.
In any case, I might say that it is very difficult to accustom birds to a crib like that. They are initially very suspicious, but sometimes the frost and snow are so that they come closer. It takes a lot of patience, one of my new colleague says – she is super-expert in birding –!
I therefore thank Luby, for reminding me about this.
Unfortunately at the moment I can not offer better pictures, but as soon as I will have time, I'll post.

Rejoiced therefore by sound and harmonious "tweet tweet" we are going to spend a happy Christmas with our loved ones.
Our hope is that everyone can find sweet moments to spend with people we love, find serenity in everyday things, find smiles and hugs, gifts and find warmth in small things done with the heart, finding a word or a thought who is far away and so desperately needs.
Basically this is Christmas!

Danda & Irish

A very Merry Christmas,
And a Happy New Year,
Let's hope it's a good one,
Without any waste! ;)
