Ricerca, sviluppo e produzione Made in Italy

Premio all’innovazione

Dear Dandaworld friends, since a long ago I wanted to take up the topic of organic waste, as I mentioned in the previous radio interview. As many of you know, I do home composting in my garden with excellent results. Every year I have excellent compost that enriches the soil in the pots to plant vegetables and flowers and in the meantime I drastically reduced the organic waste at home. But many times I asked myself: is it possible to do the same in much larger situations? Of course in Italy some municipalities already recycle organic waste deriving from communities or structures that produce it in large quantities. But this does not happen anytime and everywhere while the European Union compels it! Some time ago I received an email from Ecodyger Team that gave answer to my doubts, describing a system designed in Italy, to reduce the amount of organic waste to great levels. I was very interested and absolutely loved this news I want to share with you. With extreme transparency, as in my usual way to do, I state that what will follow is not the result of any sponsorship but simply my desire to share with you all the most innovative and useful tip to spread environmental sustainability. So let's discover Ecodyger:

Appliance that transforms waste into compost, Ecodyger
Ecodyger is a new household appliance that reduces the wet waste from 70% to 90%. It also converts organic waste into a resource that can be used in many ways. The transformation process of Ecodyger produces two residues: one solid and one liquid. The solid product of Ecodyger can be used as natural fertilizer, said compost. It is also devoid of bad odors and without germs and bacteria. The liquid product can be discharged into the sewer as with washing machines and dishwashers.

Objective: to delete 88 million tons of waste
Every Year Europe produces 252 million tons of waste. The 35% is organic waste, 88 million tons. If all Europeans were using Ecodyger, we could produce 88 million tons of wet waste less and we would have 8 tons of high quality, 100% natural fertilizer. Using Ecodyger has a strong impact on the carbon footprint, because it avoids the collection, transport and disposal of waste. Ecodyger was born interpreting the Zero Waste philosophy, to limit as much as possible CO2 emissions.
For companies and households
Ecodyger helps saving in taxes and organic waste bags. Ecodyger today is available in the Pro version, designed for those who produce large quantities of organic waste, such as restaurants, hotels, canteens and supermarkets. The team is completing tests on a smaller version dedicated to families in these months, with the aim to launch it on the market soon.
Technology Made in Italy with world patent awarded
Ecodyger was born from a group of startuppers based in Italy’s Lake Maggiore area. It is an idea and a product made
in Italy, the result of a research that lasted more than three years. The nuclear engineer who leads the development is an expert in chemical behavior of organic material and is supported by a plasma physicist.
Ecodyger technology has already won in 2012 the UK-Italy Nautical Innovation Award, thanks to innovation and technology. Moreover, the Ecodyger technology is under worldwide patent. Il Sole 24 Ore, Italian Economical Newspaper, has selected Ecodyger as one of the best technologies that allows the recycling of organic waste at home.
Ecodyger is the result of the idea and execution of Davide and Francesco Paolillo. Already operating in the field of fully equipped appliances, the brothers Paolillo have in the past worked with large companies such as Whirlpool, Smeg and Kartell.

Paola & Kia, vegan per amore, compostatrici per passione! / vegan for love, composter for passion!

For a long time I was planning to write a review for the book I received as a gift at Christmas, La mia vita a impatto zero (trad. “My Zero Impact Life” - Mondadori 2012). The time it took to be read would have been even less if it were not for the few and concentrated moments I dedicate to read books, being almost always in front of a screen.
But when I finished reading it, it seemed natural to take in hand and browse a lovely little book,
Dalle bucce nascono i fiori(trad. “From veggie scraps to flowers” - Terre di Mezzo Ed. 2013).

These two books are not written by the same person but they have a “silk thread” that connects the two authors, Paola Maugeri and Carmela Giambrone (known online under the name of Kia). I am beginnig to tell you before about this last one.

I know Kia since 2011, when it began to spread through her blog her experiments on DIY compost bin for balconies. As good fellow bloggers we exchanged comments and praises, and I was excited about her “challenge”, doing since long home composting in my garden and explaining it through some composting workshop with Mani Tese, around my city, where many people showed their doubts about the possibility of practicing composting even on their own balcony.
Well, Kia already had the answer to all these questions. She proved to make a do-it-yourself compost bin for balcony easy to build, providing all its know-how in the web and through her own workshops. Over time she has become an expert in composting, so skillfully to explain – in a very simple and convincing way in her book “Dalle bucce nascono i fiori” – the natural process, techniques and secrets to get a wonderful compost, allowing yourself to have an orchard/garden on the balcony of your house, without any discomfort for yourself and your neighbors.
A few pages for a few basic concepts and a few gestures which – if practiced daily as all the habits we have – are always been simple and even fun. Habits that are very good for you and environment!

But what is the bond between Kia and the better known Paola Maugeri?
Paola was a real surprise to me ... I still remember she as host of Videomusic – and MTV then –, as since ’95 I have always been interested in music through a particular passion, having founded and then managed with other people, the fan club and then the Italian website of The Cranberries.
I've always liked the way she shows herself to the public so genuine and sincere, free from the standards – which, unfortunately, the music industry is full – but I never imagined, after all these years, to read a book of hers and love her again and more under a new guise, that of a vegan and a zero impact champion!
But the word “champion” sounds bad, because in her book, “La mia vita a impatto zero”, she doesn’t use to put herself on a pedestal! In fact, I was expecting one of the usual “guide” on how to reduce your impact on environment, doing this or that thing.
I had already seen the episodes of the series, with the same title of the book, the TV show “E se domani” and I expected to find between the lines of the text more or less the same contents. On the contrary this book for me was a real surprise!
Paola tells us about her
zero impact life – or “almost zero”, as she specify after in the book – through her memorable but also painful experiences, through her memories with a scent of Sicily – also because of the delicious vegan recipes that close each chapter – through her meetings with celebrities from the music world – and not only! –, giving us true pearls and letting us discover the intensity and passion with which she seasons every moment of work and everyday life.
Reading this
journey in her life made me realize that you should not take anything for granted, that you must take great courage, that sometimes you have to jump and close your eyes to achieve a goal that could be the zero impact, an audition or at least an improvised tango ...
Hers is an ode to life, screaming to the world with the strength of a true rocker and whispered in a ear as the voice of a mother to her child.
Truly a book that is good for the heart, not just for the environment!

PS: Blimey, I did not tell more how Kia and Paola are connected to each other ... so go and find out yourself! ;) You are just in time for Paola’s new book which is already in bookshops, Las Vegans ... I cannot wait to have it with me!

Grazie Kia!!! / Thanks to Kia!!!

I think that this will be the only blog post of the month.
But I hope that this will be the last month I write only one blog post!

I want just thank Kia, a blogger friend I know since little by now. In her beautiful blog Equo, Eco e Vegan she quoted me two times, giving me two awards like the Sunshine Award and the Staffetta dell’Amicizia.
I want also apologize with her for having stopped awarding other bloggers. Unfortunately, you know, I’m not so able to do such things like these. I prefer to quote blogs in a more personal way, with comments or pointing to some special articles.

And I want to thank Kia not only for being quoted.
She always catches my interest with the topics I usually love. For example, these days, giving a so quickly view to the blogs I follow, my attention fell on her blog where she was talking about a very important topic. Home composting.

Kia was able to make herself a compost bin for her balcony!!!
She is not the only one… I still remember the blog post of Vera and Evelin. What a joy to see the others begin to compost!
I admire Kia also for being able to make a video on the construction phases of the DIY compost bin. I put her video newly here, sure that she will be happy.

And then I discovered that she helped Paola Maugeri [a Italian TV celebrity], to make a compost bin in order to her TV show-challenge “My Zero-Impact Life”…
Kia, well done!!! Your enthusiasm is contagious! ;)

Bentornati su Dandaworld! / Welcome back to Dandaworld!

We are in 2011! And I wish that everyone has begun in the best way!
For me it started “with a bang” ... in the sense that sooner or later I’ll break out for my many commitments managing to occupy my spare time too!
So sorry for my absence. But I have not forgotten you.
Indeed I often thought of you and was assaulted by a wave of remorses for wanting to tell you many things and not have the time to do so.
But instead of telling you why, I would like to take this opportunity to give a new life to the blog and suggest some avenues to be explored dribs and drabs, maybe your own.

Comincio innanzitutto col salutare e ringraziare vecchi e nuovi amici.
I’ll begin to greet and thank old and new friends.

First Compost John, directly from York, UK, who encourages us with the practice of home composting. He came trough my blog in comments to this old post – the discussion on compostable things – and I discovered that he is a smart person, who does not surrender in front of difficulties that a eco-sustainable life can bring. But I still have much to know about John. Follow him with me on his very active blog Low Carbon Lifestyle (in English)!

E bravi i nostri amici d’oltremanica, continuate così!
Then I wanted to congratulate with the dear Mrs. Green at Myzerowaste.com, whose success in an effort to minimize waste with of all her family, landed right here in Italy, on the pages of the newspaper La Repubblica. The impressive news hit the Italians and social networks are still talking about her wonderful family. Just think that my Facebook friends proposed me continuing the challenge taken over a year ago, with a new aim: the result of the Strauss’s challenge, that is only a bag of trash throughout the year.
Well, I must say that the aim is difficult enough, but it doesn’t scares me so much.
Let we see. Meanwhile, it is very important to continue to look forward, discovering that it is possible to reduce our waste.
And well done to our friends across the Channel, keep it up!

Per fortuna, poi ne abbiamo trovato uno, senza marchi truffaldini e con pulsante on/off.
Another person I want to thank for his constant attention to the problem of energy wastage is Riccardo, at Wutel.net, which told in advance a thorny issue for me. The energy waste of digital decoders.
Like all Italians Irish and me had to switch to the DTTV signal, last December.
We went looking for a decoder to be connected to our LCD TV, which we already have, but we did not use due to the presence in the house of a CRT one – the latter is currently parked on a table, waiting to be reused in connection with the DVD recorder… far be it from us by throwing it away! –.
In short, we have already had to change the decoder once. Apart from many technical reasons –malfunction, inability to record programs – we had fallen into a trap-fake label. The box had clearly a label that boasted the characteristic of energy-saving of the decoder. But ... we found that the decoder didn’t have the on/off button and had to remain permanently in stand-by, otherwise the de-tuning of channels.
Blimey! Can you imagine the increase in energy consumption that then we would saw in bill?
Then we noticed that all units bearing a energy saving symbol, had no switch-off button!
Fortunately, then we found one without that label and with the button. But to be sure that the equipment would not even consume energy when turned off – it sends a strange hissing sound – we connected TV, decoder and other equipments to a beautiful extension cable with button, so as recommended by our Riccardo.
I highly recommend reading his article on the energy consumption of decoders, realizing that this digital deviltry will cost to Italian families much more than we thought in terms of money and environment!
And please, pay attention if you have yet to buy these gadgets!

Persino i negozi continuano a rifilarle.
And after saying hello to these friends blogger, I want you to open your eyes to a problem that I feel a lot.
You all know by now that 2011 is the year, when, here in Italy, the use of plastic bags is finally banned!
But ... are we sure that everyone is following the guidelines?
I am not very sure. It was enough for me to have a walk trough the market in Rimini... I saw plastic bags everywhere! Even in the shops.

Viene chiamato ECM biodegradabile.
Ve ne faccio vedere qui due esempi:
But that’s not all. You have to be on guard. There are around some bags that at a first look have nothing other than those banned, but are presented as biodegradable ones! It is the old Polyethylene with additives that accelerate the degradation. It is called ECM biodegradable.
Here I show two examples:

It seems that this type of plastic is not compatible with the organic waste collection as they say. The EP – which, among other things, is derived from oil and, therefore, we shold use as little as possible – does not degrade in time according to composting plants.

At this authoritative link you can find the news that confirms my suspects.

So my recommendation is to always carry the reusable bags made in canvas or other durable materials! And who have a business might be careful on these eco-fakes and maybe join the initiative of “Porta la Sporta”!
But that is another topic that I will come to tell soon!

A colpi di weekend ecologici... / One green weekend by another

Briefly, because I can give you this information in time only in this way: between tomorrow and the day after, in Romagna there will be another series of green events I ask you strongly to participate, if you're in the area.

The first is the usual autumn event with Ecomia, the Fair of Solidarity and Responsibility Economy, which this time will take place in two different locations and during two different weekends, the next in Riccione, 18 and 19 September, and then 2nd October in Rimini, in conjunction with AmbienteFestival, the event which will last for about a month and will accompany us to the final event of Ecomondo in November 2010.

This weekend the full program of the festival – you can give a look here – also includes two workshops in collaboration with Mani Tese Rimini the association to which I belong as you know. We will propose the laboratory "There's compost for you" (Saturday, 4 p.m.) by me – who will make you understand more closely the importance and ease of home composting – and the laboratory about the use of washable nappies (Sunday, at 4 p.m.), by the mom Alessia, who will demonstrate the practice on how to use washable nappies, their benefits, giving many tips to those who undertake to use them for their children.
A fantastic opportunity that will also be helpful to meet.

In addition to this great event, if you're not in the province of Rimini, but closer to Cesena, you should not miss the Recycling Day, which is in its third edition. The event is by Parallel Storage, sponsored and supported by the town of Cesena and M.I.Z. (Zero Impact Movement). Here there will be laboratories, music, market, exhibitions and meetings too...
I can not be there, for obvious reasons, but I'd like to hear someone of you that will be there, so we can share our impressions.

Insomma, avete l'imbarazzo della scelta, no?
In short, you are spoiled for choice, right?

"V" come volontariato / "V" as Volunteer

Dunque, dove eravamo rimasti?
Well, where did I leave you?
Sorry, I was a bit lost… and the blog archive in the sidebar cries, showing only two post for this month! Blimey!
Especially who popped over here, after I was appeared on TV, could be a bit disappointed. Well, I want to specify that I’m not that kind of blogger who writes almost every day. Simply I’m not able.
For my blog posts I take inspirations from my daily personal experiences. It is clear that if I am too much busy for work or during time off, I can’t update the blog.
But I don’t want to discourage you and in order to let you know what I am doing, I’ll write here this “minestrone”-blog post about… volunteering!

Except working, lately I am too much busy with volunteering.
Almost all of you know that I am part of the local Mani Tese group, which blog I care the update too. Did you remember an old post about a fantastic event in September 2009?
Well, we are organizing a new “Alternative in strada”. It will take place in Santarcangelo of Romagna on the next 6th June.

For this reason I am not only involved in the general organization of the event, but with some others volunteers I will take part in self-making laboratories.
In particular I’ll manage a lab about home-composting, where I’ll show my personal composting experience. If you want to come to visit me, it would be very nice and I will be very happy to meet you and tell you on my adventure.
Even the other labs are very interesting: there will be a self-making labs on detergents, a lab on washable diapers, a lab on homemade bread and a play-lab for kids.

There will be also numerous recycling artists, local associations for world co-operation and aid, the famous “boycotting shop” with its show, the second-hand market and also live music!
So if I was in your shoes and was around here, I wouldn’t miss this occasion useful to visit also the beautiful town of Santarcangelo and the antiquities fair!

This great event apart, I am very involved in the activities with another association, L’Ippocampo, born some months ago in my area, Viserba. It aims to recover the memory through the stories of inhabitants or tourists and through the collection of various kinds of material about the heritage (photos, videos and literature) documenting history.
This idea occurred because the Adriatic Riviera is a typical tourism place and the succession of seasons, the coming and going of tourists, but especially the strong urbanization have often distorted the look of places and the traditions. Even if sometimes visitors gave new colours to the scenery, giving curious anecdotes which is a real pleasure to discover.

Even if I’m not native of this place, I became passionate about the local heritage, especially about the people who keep huge treasures inside their memories and experiences.
In my own small way, I try to translate all this in graphics, giving my professional aid as volunteer.
Then every memory or cue is registered in a website and also in a blog, where you can find more and more to discover.
Who knows this place for the seaside, even only for a summer day, will be well surprised in knowing so many particular things typical of this area, in the North of Rimini, once the country of fishermen and farmers, but also a illustrious place, destination for famous and wealthy people. All together made this place unique.

So, do you understand now why my mind is so busy? Thoughts, concern and also enthusiasm…
Forgive me, please! I’ll come back with the report about coming events and we’ll keep on talking about our usual preferred topics.
Apart the environment, also people’s heart must be preserved sometimes! :)

Dolce è… riciclare! / Sweet is… recycling!

Allora proviamo a parlarne!
After all these days ‘to be recyclable or not’ has become a heated debate. So let’s try to talk about it! Who knows what is recyclable? Some time ago I started to write a series of posts on the symbols of packaging, and I want to continue. But there are some issues that were involved in discussion and need urgent answers. As for example Lo’s dubts.

Lo is a fantastic woman who writes on her blog Galline 2nd Life. I’ve already told here on her visit to my city. On her crowded blog (she affectionately calls it ‘the hen house’) you can find creative and appetizing recipes she writes on herself or re-elaborates with a real personal touch, experimenting them with her family. A very special family with a husband very careful on energy consumes and a beautiful girl, the ‘Gnome’, who already has talent and imagination, and, in my opinion, has already learned all from life! :)
But the coolest thing is that in her blog pages, Lo tells about her deepest climates. Every article is a story, sometimes very introspective but pleasant the same. And recipes often seem to be inspired from stories.
I don’t want to dwell on some flatteries, but I say that the day I met these people I had the impression that I already knew them. A rare sensation I prove only with people who are tuned on my waves.
Could you imagine how I reacted when they said to me that they go shopping from local farmers? And about Lo that go to by cheese and dairy products in her own container from a farmer? I had an explosion of joy inside! Hurray! The first Italian person that do it!

The day of my birthday Lo made a gift for me very exquisite to say the least – the only present I had until now except the lottery ticket sent from my mother – at zero waste! It was exquisite not only as idea: she made the ‘fisherman’s cookies’ – a type of local cookies – that I gave her as a present in a tin box with the image of a hen house. :D But I bought those ones in a bakery. She liked so to ask me the recipe. I hadn’t none and not being very able to cook I asked to my nearest friend Cristella who is a very clever cook, writer and blogger.
Yesterday Lo reported her own recipe for the ‘fisherman’s cookies’ and talked about me and Irish, with beautiful words!

Then, how not to help her when she asked me about the possibility to recycle greaseproof paper and silicon as non-stick material to ccok in the oven?

Greaseproof paper isn’t recyclable, I hope that most of you already know it. It can’t be recycled with paper because after use it is dirt. And dirt paper can be recycled only with humid waste, for those who has this facility in their city. On the contrary, that ‘hellish’ kind of paper can’t be either recycled with humid waste, perhaps due to its components. Even if it is paper for food, I wasn’t able to find infos about its composition, but may waste companies exclude it from recycle facilities.

So what to do? You can turn back to the old way to “butter and flour” or you can find alternatives.
So here they are! So give a look here and there. I don’t want to promote a brand rather than another. But it seems that someone is going on the right way! So the recyclable and compostable greaseproof paper exists and it is accessible to all!

A speech apart it is needed for the ‘silicon foils’ (or rather the moulds) to be used in place of paper.
The silicon for food use, I read here and there, is recyclable, but I wonder… is it recycled? Many waste companies do not accept lots of objects marked with the ‘Recyclable’ symbol, with the pretext that they aren’t classified as packaging. So, if the eternal life of the silicon can be good for preserving resources, this feature could come back as a boomerang in the case you have to throw it for being accidentally damaged or an effective wear.

So, I wonder to know what do you think about it. Let’s help Lo to solve her doubt. This doubt it became mine too, since I found this alternative, seeing that I haven’t used greaseproof paper anymore. I’d like to use it again just to not wash a baking buttered tin! :)
I’m joking. of course, even if everyday life is not always so relaxing! Zero waste is also this, to understand what is possible or not in you own experience, without being to strict.
After all there is always a half way… and it’s sustainable!

A presto! / Thanks so much, Lo, for all! I accept with pleasure a good lesson about the eco-puff pastry… hoping soon!

Sorprese e novità di inizio primavera! / Surprises and news in early spring!

How many things are happening in a few days...

I complimenti vanno a lei!
The first nice surprise that happened to me was on the beginning of this week to discover the fabulous prize received from the dear friend Almost Mrs. Average of The Rubbish Diet blog!!!
Not one of the usual chains of bloggers who reward each other (even those are always welcome!), but an exclusive prize, which she has devised to thank those who have encouraged her within a year, in its challenge of reducing waste and to reward the efforts of those who have taken to heart the waste problem, changing their lifestyle.
Well, I was nominated and selected in the category Eurovision Award, equally to our common Slovenian friend Layla (I will talk soon of her) and Esther from France.
I was very honoured to receive this award, like many other bloggers and authors of sites that have received recognition in 23 categories! Really awesome!
Remarkable was the effort that Mrs. A. has for following all its readers, in their questions, requests for help, encouragement and frustrations... she is now really a true diva of the British scene, but no for TV or movies, but a true star in the real world, who shines for her extraordinary vitality, creativity, sincerity and sensitivity. The compliments are for her!

Going back, last Sunday, Irish and me could finally enjoy the excellent company of the GAR group (Guide Appennino Romagnolo) in Rimini, in a walk on the beautiful hills around the area of San Marino. It was a special and wonderful experience in the truest sense of the word.
Under a shy sun of early spring, with the background of white Carpegna for the last snow, we knew, with the aid of an expert, almost a dozens of varieties of edible field herbs and roots: ‘sonchus oleraceus L’, ‘tragopogon pratensis L’, wild leeks, ‘sinapis alba L’, ‘plantago lanceolata’, Jerusalem artichokes and other species. We were looking for them in places known as not contaminated, identifying the shape and surface of the leaves, stems, and any inflorescences so as to not possibly confuse them with similar but toxic plant. We learned to understand more or less where they are, and we picked them trying to leave enough for not affecting the regrowth.
Later we were able to test the taste and richness in vitamins and other properties, after having cooked the herbs in the headquarters of the association. It was instructive but especially funny for the presence of the happy company that gave us laughter and even music, in the end of the evening, thanks to the skills of an expert of the accordion!
In the end, what remained in the heart was so much for knowing these extraordinary people and at the same time to be part of a nature that gives resources, livelihood and care, the same we often mistreated.
We’ll look forward to the next adventure with the GAR group!

Ancora indietro. Volevate sapere com’è andata a finire l’avventura dei ravanelli? Benissimo direi!
Still behind. Do you wanted to know what was the end of the adventure of radishes? Very well I say!
As I mentioned in the comments, and as you can see from the photos, the recipe of Mrs. Green’s soup had the best. I cooked in advance the amount of radishes leaves (two bunchs) like spinach, then I cooked 200 grams of organic chickpeas (dry and then put to soak for 12 hours) in pressure cooker (to save energy and time) with butter, bay leaves, garlic and chives. I added pieces of potato (two beautiful large), the leaves of cooked radishes, water and a nut of organic spices to flavour. The final touch was a good addition of parmesan. In almost an hour of cooking in total a tasty soup was ready for 4 servings! Not bad for something that had to end in the trash! Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions, I have inspiration for next experiment in the kitchen!

And finally we started to work in the garden, two Saturdays ago. There was a beautiful sun and the earth of the garden below the house was slow to receive the benefits. The winter rains had too many proofed as the top layer of the earth so that it is split and prevented the growth of every blade of grass. So Irish got a good work poking around the ground, uprooting small bushes that in the years no longer served the function of hedge. In their place we will plant the jasmine. I cut to piece most of the branches and roots of the plants chosen, and to go to deposit them in the compost bin. Two not so pleasant jobs, the first tiring for the back, the second for my hand that at the end of the day was stressed! But it was worth it. Soon we plants dicondra, a herb that does not need to be cut and which had been already planted and still endures in some corners of the garden.
Previously I was asked how composting proceeds. Well! Or at least it seems... lower layer is mature and smells of undergrowth, the upper is not decomposed and occasionally needs to be covered with a few of compost that is under, because it tends to the formation of midges. The negative point however is that this spring we cannot even use the compost, because the amount is still little and process is slower than we thought. This time I had to water the cumulation because the garden waste have been formed a too dry layer in surface. Here are the photos.

Cosa manca? Ah dimenticavo!
What's missing? Oh I forgot! The 'fogheraccia' of Saint Joseph. A tradition of Romagna to which we have not failed to attend especially for meeting the few people we know here, including the fabulous Cristella. For photos back to Irish’ album, while to Cristella I dedicate these few rhymes inspired by bonfires...

Dai ceppi silenziosi, timidamente svegliate,
Cominciarono rosse a far confusione,

Volteggiando allegre, lievi danzarono,

(‘Favole faville’ – Danda, Viserba, Marzo ’09)
