Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary - 12 Aug 2008 1st part

Wake up early in the morning, we are ready to start our holiday as good ‘walkers’ rather than hikers – we are not highly trained, sigh! –. The first real day in Val di Non – which, I advise, offers much more of good apples! – will be dedicated to the visit of Tovel Lake, in the Adamello-Brenta mountains group, just over the south-west of where we are.
But first I must mention the wonderful breakfast that is offered, not only to our palates, but also to our eyes! The gentle lady of the house, coming in the dining room, begins to compose a picture of colours and flavours, where we are at the table, with local and seasonal fruit (apricots, peaches, raspberries), Trentino yoghurt, genuine jams, just hot bread home-made with genuine ingredients and without additives, and finally an inviting dessert always done at home, a little tart of raspberry mousse and yogurt! Mmm what a goodness! Our mouths are filled with sweetness and remain without words… only the aspect of all this goodness feeds us without mentioning flavour and fragrance (the photo at the side portrays one of many breakfast every day different and always delicious)!
But let us return to our itinerary… we decide to take public transports: reaching Cles there is a shuttle bus that goes directly to Tovel. It is organized by the Natural Park of Adamello-Brenta. But we’re wrong about timetable for the first leg and we think we can go to Cles by foot… nothing more wrong: road is long and tortuous and there is a tunnel at the bottom! So we renounce and, after about four kilometers on foot we pause to Cagnò, where we rest for about an hour and a half. We sit on the bench around the trunk of a tree and read some brochures until a strange man arrives, occurred in electric car. He starts to fix us curiously. Then he asks us if we are foreigners and when his doubt is dissolved, a little chat begins with us and then joking with his acquaintance, passing from there, in close dialect of Trentino, which we don’t understand. But it makes us smile and so time passes until the bus to Cles arrives. In route to Tovel from the windows of the bus we see endless apple orchards scrolling, all owned by the most famous Italian brand. More and more climbing the landscape is transformed with the emergence of woods. Then you reach the parking lot where you can only continue walking. There are several paths, but one in particular towards the Lake is a short stretch lined with a clear torrent that invites to bathe. But here we are in a protected area! After a wooden bridge the sight of a lake nestled between the rocks and green, with nuances from light blue to emerald opens to us! A fantastic spectacle! What a pity that the high cloudiness of the day makes grey the atmosphere but it doesn’t hamper mountains reflecting in this wonderful mirror!
We approach the water where some small tourist enjoy throw stones in the lake that seems apparently lifeless. The bottom is gray, but setting a good gravel you find that it is full of small fishes, chars… strange creatures! After observed them for a while we decide to walk on the path along the lake passing between tall trees that touch with roots the banks. Sometimes spectacular views open among the trees, while looking high toward the peaks, you see large meadows. It is here that the famous huts are hidden approximately at 2000 metres and where there is the production of excellent fresh cheeses. You can arrive climbing trails, well-marked paths, but this time we cannot go adventuring for lack of time and training… (to be continued)

Appunti di viaggio / My journey diary - 11 Aug 2008

Here’s the second part of holidays, a second trip to the high Italy, Trentino, Val di Non. I am not alone this time, I was accompanied by my mate, finally on vacation. We escape from the chaos of August in Rimini, searching for an oasis of tranquillity, where we can breathe good air and then walk in nature.
By chance, we had chosen on the Internet a B&B in Revò, on Lake Santa Giustina. We was inspired by the name that recalls an ‘enchanted’ atmosphere, and by the ‘Ecolabel’ certification. We decided to go by train to save gasoline and to feel less oppressed by the movement of holidaymakers exoduses on motorways. Thus, documented in depth through web on local transport and with tickets purchased, we face a journey of about 400 km in Intercity, to Trento. Strangely the train leaves in time (eh, eh, will it be because it has to go to Germany?), and arrives at its destination on time after crossing the Po Valley and then going slowly toward the mountains. During the trip, we have seen numerous campaigns with mini-wind power pales, while at the various stations, we are pleased to see that the FS have adopted recycling facilities, but they are almost totally ignored by passengers.
Meanwhile, time has passed quickly reading and listening to music. At Trento we expect another train, this time on a local rail electricity, Trento-Malè. Almost all trains are modern and equipped with air conditioning and doors that open only on request. Our last stop is at Cles from where buses depart for the various localities, including Revò, but the kind master of the B&B is waiting for us there and she gives us a lift by car. Just knowing her, make us realize that she is a delicious and very cordial person.
So chatting along the eight km which divide the two cities, the lady tells us of her B&B: ‘Ecolabel’ certification is not new to her house, that has been provided some times ago with solar panels heating system. Now they're trying to equip the apartments with new technologies that should lead to a greater environmental certification, also a European one. Indeed here, flipping around our eyes, we see that the inhabitants of Trentino are much more attentive to energy saving. Almost all the houses have rooftop solar panels! Often three elements for each building.
So talking about this and other topics, we came to the house that is located on the slopes of a hill between residences and fields of apples, so we are brought to our apartment. But, due to our curiosity about environment, we are guided to a small tour of the restructuring yard of part of the same residence. This will be rethought to retain the heat. In practice a skin has been studied, according to leave a inner space filled with insulation. Thus the wall has a thickness of about 70 cm! In addition, interiors will be completely covered with wood, floors will be raised to allow the passage of heating pipes and various facilities including natural ventilation (like in a ‘domus’ of the ancient Romans). In addition the new part of the B&B will have a common room with fireplace where you can spend beautiful moments shared with the hosts and other guests.
Well, we have to admit that already with this background we are encouraged to return here, but what leaves us more enchanted (and I have flown over initially to say) is the room where we will stay for these next five days: a real apartment, with a bedroom, a living room and a kitchenette, a bathroom with a disengagement / laundry, TV and a sitting room and a wood loft on which a bed enlightened from a skylight. Every detail is well cared for, it seems one of those houses you see in furniture magazines: the table is well set, bed with embroidered linens, all set with taste and clear tones that express the personality of the owner. A radiant person who prefers to treat guests as such guests and not as customers!
After a few minutes chatting with her and having met her husband, we feel in such as a company of people who you have always known!
At the time of being left alone we incredulous admire the apartment and find numerous brochures and books useful to plan and enjoy the next few days. A small album is catching our attention. It is the guestbook. Inside there are rhymes, drawings and pages of praise, particularly for care in breakfast, which everybody seem enthusiastic! Then, we concentrate in preparing next days in this cozy nest on the sides of Trentino mountains …

Odio il 1° Settembre! / I hate 1st September!

A dopo e... fuggite amici animali!!!

Tomorrow morning I wake up early... and it isn't my first day of work before hols!
But there's something of fussy in the air. Yes, I knew, there are shots in the air! The hunting season is open. It seems like hunters couldn't wait anymore, so in the early morning they are yet busy with killing little defenceless animals. But is it really necessary? What's in their heads? I can't comprehend! So my day starts with a little 'bitterness more.
Later we'll try to smile and I'll talk about my journey in Trentino.
So see you later and... run away, dear animals!
