SOS Recycle: plastica contrassegnata dal numero #90 / Plastic marked with #90

The aid request came from a recent comment by the fantastic Slovenian blogger Layla, from Eco Experiment. She is committed in transforming her lifestyle in a more sustainable way too, trying to reduce waste and involving her family, growing her vegs, composting organic waste, buying more without packaging, doing shopping among her farmers neighbours. She is a formidable girl, I suggest you to pop over her blog, in English… but she is good also in Italian, in case you have to ask her any question!

Well, in spite her efforts, she has a naughty sister who puts her in difficulty. In facts she is fond of some not so eco-products as for example the instant cappuccino sachets.

Layla referred to me that these sachets have the symbol “recyclable” plus the number #90.
Sincerely I never saw this mark, but with a quick research I found that #90 means 'plastic matched with aluminium'. It is enough to control in
this page of Wikipedia, which is a necessary and reliable source of information – English page is not so complete, so it could be the reason that put Layla in difficulty –.

/In the picture a sachet of instant camomile with the same type of packaging but marked with the letters PI (flexible polylaminate)

So, what to do with this kind of packaging? It is not so easy to say. It depends from the local waste collection service, to which I suggest to ring – perhaps to their toll-free number –. In general this kind of packaging isn't recyclable, but there could be the possibility to assimilate it to the tetrapak, which has also a layer of paper with plastic and aluminium foils. As a consequence it could be possible to recycle the sachet not with plastic (which hasn’t a separating treatment) but with paper, as in many municipalities happens for the tetrapaks. But I'm not sure and it is even better to ask locally and verify that in your own municipality there’s the appropriate recycling facility.

Of course my suggestion is to eliminate from purchases this kind of matched plastic, as I did (coffe packaging, single portions for food), as the tetrapak I consider a waste of resources and I know that it is rarely recycled in Italy.

So, if you have an idea to suggest to Layla, please tell her, she will be very happy!
Greetings to all the Slovenian ZeroWaste-family!

;) / read soon the next SOS Recycle blogpost, which is surely interesting and more… about Christmas!

  1. WOW!! Danda, you are fantastic!! :)

I only read the English Wikipedia, it's true! I never thought Italian could be so much better!
Slovenian Wikipedia is mostly translated from English or even more incomplete, so I never thought to check other languages!

    Thank you soo much!!

There used to be a toll-free number a few years ago, I wonder if it still exists? (I don't trust the people who provided it 100% though, as they are for incinerators too!) Will try to find out more locally! :)

And thank you so much for the lovely words!! :) You and the other eco-bloggers are a constant inspiration for me!!

I will try to put a Google translate button on my page too, if I figure out how! :)

  2. Hi Layla,
thank you very much for appreciating my job. Tell me if you find any informations more regarding your country.

I did write to my local waste service too, but they still haven't replied for now. I wonder if they have a recycling solution different from which I imagined.

Did you find the translator button? You can find it on the page of Blogger where you can change the blog layout, in the list of the widgets to add to the side column. It's a good thing and thanks to you, because it was for you that I added it to my blog! ;)

  5. @ Eccomi Lo!
