Vacanze a Km (quasi) 0… / About zero distance-holidays… # 1

Così è capitato a noi.
The countdown to the end of August is started.
As many newspaper and TV news said, for the credit crunch and the lack of spare time, many people had to be content for short holidays and travels.
So to us. We shouldn’t really complain about it, we have the seaside very near our home. But sometimes we need to go away for breathing new air. You can’t imagine as disturbing is to live in a so crowded place in summer!

So, this time we decided where to go, choosing a destination without long travels and complicated paths. We chose among the various tourism offers of our region, Emilia Romagna. It is really surprising to discover how many places, habitats, landscapes and climates this land offers!
As example take the Romagna seaside: beyond the big beaches there is an amazing hinterland, rich of history and traditions, gastronomical ones included. And, behind the hills of Romagna, the green mountains of the Apennines between Tuscany and Romagna raise. There you can find biodiversity and breathtaking views both in summer and winter.

It was here that, taking the map, we pointed the finger. Precisely on Bagno di Romagna (FC province), a town placed in the East edge of the National Park of the Casentino Forests. It is the destination of many tourists searching for hot spring in a very green location.
However, what made us choose for this destination wasn’t the presence of spas, nor the nearness of the park – we already visited it many times –. It was the nearness to Rimini that convinced us, about 90 Km, if you drive on motorways, nothing compared to the kilometres along you normally drive on holidays! Then a series of articles on local newspaper and websites, telling about Bagno di Romagna as “the Town of Gnomes”, made us curious as well.
Gnomes are creatures from the woods – if you believe or not – and so the presence of fairy wood is the feature of the place!

So we quickly made the baggage, after having decided a place where to sleep. At first we thought to camp, then we decided for sleeping in a farm holidays, as the one camping was closed – what a pity! –. Many farms holidays give the possibility to camp with a camper or a tent. But we chose to sleep comfortably in a room. The chosen farm holidays was this, a marvellous place, on the top of a mountain passage, and what’s more is that the structure is approved and controlled by AIAB (Italian Organic Farm Association) and ICEA (Institute for Ethical and Environment Certification).

Although Bagno di Romagna is easily attainable by bus from the main chief towns in Romagna (Rimini, Forlì, Cesena), we decided to go there by our little own car, to have a vehicle at hand to go from the farm to the town. But we used car few times, only to maximize the time available.

The three days flew in less then no time.

Primo giorno: sopralluogo a Bagno.
First day: inspection at Bagno. A very lovely town, embedded in a green valley, with some buildings of historical and artistic value (the Santa Maria Assunta Basilica, the Palace of the Captain) and typical very accurate lanes, houses with flowered windows and inviting little shops. It’s not a case that Bagno di Romagna is “Orange Flag” awarded – an Italian Touring Club Award – among many Italian municipalities. The centre is crossed by the Savio River, along which a park runs – our picnic oasis – and also spas, excellence places, perhaps not for our pockets!
But we took advantage on the dinner in the farm holidays. Very good homemade potato tortelli, as the local tradition says and delicious flavours from the wood… be quite, no game for food to us!

The evening passed to catch shooting stars, and they were not slow to light up the very black sky… a sky that wasn’t remembered so long by me! After wishes expressed, we went to the room… but blimey! We risked to pass the night out!
Be careful, if you are going to attend these places, you must know that it’s better to respect their timetable!!!

Attenzione, prego, comunicazione di servizio... / Attention, please, service information...

Salve a tutti.

A buon blogger poche parole!

Hello everybody.
I am here again to give a service information...

Be quiet, please, there was no lost child on the beach with green swimsuit, you don't have to move your car parked in second row and nobody is calling a new operator at cash... :)

I just wanted to tell you – I don't know if you've already noticed – that, since August, blog comment moderation is enabled.
So don't be afraid if you don't see your comment appearing immediately!
This was a necessary change due to the fact that I'm not so constantly at my computer during these days and, in a period of absence like this, a comment out of place could cost me a lot. This is the consequence of what has recently been decided on blogs and sites (for a new Italian law).
A word to the wise blogger!

Also new: I came 36th in the Wikio ranking for
Italian Environment blogs. It doesn't excite me a lot to be classified, but I'm not sorry to know how much readers appreciated my articles.
For those who are not familiar with Wikio, blogs and social aggregator, pop on their website.
A heartfelt thanks to Wikio and all of you that constantly follow my eco-deliriums!

Soon, very soon indeed, a new post... just the time to organize some photos!

Pedalando lentamente a... Ferrara / Riding slowly in... Ferrara

Allora siete al mare o in montagna? Posti affollati, vero?
So where are you? At the seaside or over the mountains? Crowded places, aren’t they?
If it happens to you – as me too – that you can’t plan a real holiday and you can only go out for the weekend, it would be better to choose nearer and less popular destinations. Don’t you agree?
Well, consider to have a trip toward unknown place that stays just around the corner.

It is the case of our last weekend out at Ferrara.
The destination was really decided for a special event we wouldn’t have missed: the concert of the
Kings of Convenience, a Norwegian band who gave us wonderful ballads. The gig would be played in the magnificent scenery of the Estensi’s Castle of Ferrara, an architectural jewel embedded in the old town, that many people told me as beautiful.

I never visited Ferrara before, so I had the full confirmation of those descriptions, first of all the one that belonged from my father, great estimator of arts. When I was teen, he brought the schoolchildren – he was a teacher – here and sent me a post-card that sounded as an invitation.

Ferrara is magic. The old town is a web of many lanes and squares, full of medieval and renaissance buildings. Each palace has an amazing story and if you try to close your eyes you can imagine the movement of the medieval dwellers with their gorgeous clothes. I can’t forget to mention the Palace of Diamanti, with its characteristic ashlars, among many less known other ones, which interiors are really surprising!

Magnifico!
But the great astonishment come at the sight of the wonderful Cathedral. With its decorations it is simply spectacular! Almost near there is the mentioned castle, massive and protected in its big moat, over which drawbridges and loophole are opened. Wonderful!

To sum up, I can’t tell you about everything, even for the risk to repeat adjectives as “magnificent”, “spectacular”, “wonderful”, “fantastic” and so on, al related to Ferrara. But I can suggest you the official tourism site of the city, where you can find all kinds of information, especially some interesting podcasts you can use as guides, during the visit.

As you can imagine, our way for organising the trip was eco-friendly. After having consulted the web, we decided to go there by train, spending less money for the not so long and pleasant travel, during which we had to do a quick stop to Ravenna.
We pointed to use mostly bike to visit the city, and we were very surprised to see that Ferrara is absolutely “the city of bikes”!!!

It was full of cycle routes for citizens and tourist indeed, and everybody really goes by bike!
Wow! I felt like I was on another planet! We had the chance to bring our own bikes with us, but we didn’t need it because there are lots of rent-a-bike points and there are public bikes too. So we were lucky, the bike-sharing service is called “C’entro anch’io”, the same we have in Rimini. We can use the bike key in more than a city and so we did, happy to go around the city without being stressed or tired.

We did take no buses and stayed for the night in a good and cheap B&B along the Po river, not far from the railway station. On Saturday we went by walk into the city centre, visiting the lanes, having lunch in a tavern and having a good organic ice-cream, about which I’ll tell you further. In the evening we went to sit in the square near the Castle, waiting the start of the concert.

Also the “Kings” appreciated so much the city, wondering to play in front of a so beautiful scenery. After the opening of the fantastic supporting band Ophelia Hope, the main band did their best: they played old and new melodies, in a first time in duo, then with the other musicians, in a very amusing performance, joking also with the public. I discovered that the duo from Bergen – perhaps unconsciously – are very green: they like bicycles – as you can notice in the “Cayman Island” song – and they love to stay quiet. In the first half hour of the concert they asked to the public for not taking photos. I liked it, I cannot tolerate flashes during a show!

So, with their music in our ears and riding bicycles, the following Sunday we went on to discover the city. Many historical and sacred buildings to visit, but this time we had some breaks, resting in parks, as a beautiful park with secular trees. I couldn’t resist to hug – I wasn’t so able to – a cedar of Lebanon and an oak. They almost scared me for their exaggerate dimensions!

In the afternoon we rode around the ancient walls. A walkway along them, totally in the green of the trees and in a tranquillity almost unusual for a big city. I founded only a fault: at a certain point of the walk, at a big distance, behind the trees, I saw a high chimney… this took me to be disappointed and suspicious but I went on to ride, trying to appreciate the green in all its nuances.

So, leaving bicycles at the start rack, walking newly along the centre streets, having another ice-cream and then going back to station, our downshifting weekend ended. We enjoyed arts, music, tastes and nature, being beside my beloved man. I needed all this things. With a bit of melancholy we leaved from Ferrara, with the idea to return in new occasions…

“if only they could see, if only they had been here

they would understand, how someone could have chosen

to go the length I’ve gone, to spend just one day riding

holding on to you, I never thought it would be this clear”

(Cayman Islands - Kings of Convenience)
