Finally, it’s the right time to dedicate to my hobbies! As you know, among many, the one that keeps my mind on is always “upcycling”, a kind of advanced recycling, where all the scraps are recovered and creatively reworked. Se mi capita di avere sotto mano qualcosa che è da buttar via, perché non riciclabile, ed ha colori, forme, spessori, materiali particolari, allora penso subito ad un nuovo utilizzo sotto una nuova forma. Se l’idea non salta subito fuori dal cilindro, o non ho abbastanza tempo per realizzarla, a questi materiali riservo un piccolo cantuccio nel mio armadio, in attesa di riciclo creativo.
It could happen to have at hand something to throw away, because not recyclable. If it has special colours, shapes, thicknesses or materials, then I immediately think to a new use for it, in a new form. If the idea does not immediately jump out of the hat, or I have not enough time to realize it, I reserve to these materials a small corner in my closet, waiting for creative recycling.
Per tanti anni ho conservato le mie agende di lavoro, fino a che ho deciso di eliminarle: ormai era un archivio non più utile. Ho cercato di riciclare tutta la carta possibile, compreso il cartone delle copertine. Ma, per la complessità del materiale, non ho potuto riciclare un paio copertine, che ho, così, conservato. Fra queste una bella copertina rossa morbida da un’agenda del 2009, composta da cartone, un rivestimento in carta plastificata e un’imbottitura in poliuretano che normalmente è termosaldata alle altre parti, che così non sono separabili. Cosa farne?
For many years I kept my working agendas, until I decided to eliminate them: it was now a no longer useful archive. I tried to recycle all the paper as possible, including the cardboard covers. But, because of the complexity of the materials, I couldn’t recycle a few covers, so I store them away. Among them a nice soft red cover dated 2009, consisting of cardboard, a plastic-coated paper, padded with polyurethane that is normally welded to the other parts, so that they are not separable. What to do?
Da tempo volevo una cover per tablet più estiva di quella che avevo acquistato tempo fa a Matrioska... e mi ero messa in testa di realizzarla con materiale di recupero. La copertina rossa si è rivelata adatta allo scopo perché delle stesse dimensioni del mio tablet da 7”. Inoltre, mi è ritornata utile una vecchia t-shirt in cotone elasticizzato bianco a fiori rossi che avevo conservato, essendo un regalo della mia mamma e ormai inutilizzata perché rovinata in alcuni punti. Oltre al tessuto gli elastici rossi che bordavano la t-shirt sono risultati perfetti per il lavoro che vi vado qui a spiegare con un tutorial fotografico.
I have long wanted a new cover for my tablet, one more in tune with summer than the one I bought a long ago at Matrioska... and I wanted to realize it with recycled materials. The red cover was proved suitable for the purpose because of the same size of my 7” tablet. Moreover, an old white and red flowered stretch cotton t-shirt came soon back useful. I kept it stored because it was as a gift from my mom and now unused because damaged in some parts. In addition, the red elastic tissues that adorned the edges of the t-shirts were perfect for the job that I’m going here to explain with a photo tutorial.
Ecco l’occorrente / Here’s what you need:
- copertina cartonata imbottita di un’agenda da riciclare / padded cardboard cover agenda to recycle;
- T-shirt da riciclare in tessuto elasticizzato / stretch fabric T-shirts to recycle;
- elastici da riciclo / elastic tissues to recycle;
- cartoncino un po’ spesso sempre recuperato / recovered thick board;
- colla vinilica e un pennello per stenderla / glue and a brush to spread it;
- nastro adesivo, cucitrice, ago e filo / adhesive tape, stapler, needle and thread;
- eventuale nastro biadesivo forte (tipo quello per moquette) / any strong double-sided tape (like the one for carpets);
- 2 nastri e 2 bottoni di dimensioni diverse / 2 ribbons and 2 buttons of different sizes.
1) Ho cominciato col rivestire esternamente la copertina col tessuto della t-shirt, tagliato di misura più grande di un centimetro lungo tutto il bordo della copertina e l’ho incollato bene, stendendolo per evitare grinze.
I started by coating the outside of the front cover with the fabric of the shirt, cut to size larger than one centimeter along all the edges of the cover and bonded well, spreading it to avoid wrinkles.
I folded and glued inside the advanced fabric edges. I let it dry.
3) Ho tagliato un cartoncino di dimensioni leggermente più piccole della copertina chiusa, quanto basta a coprire i lembi della stoffa ripiegati precedentemente. Ho tagliato gli elastici rossi della t-shirt, sistemandoli ai quattro angoli del cartoncino e fissandoli con nastro adesivo removibile. Poi li ho ripiegati sull’altra facciata del cartoncino e li ho pinzati bene alle estremità con la cucitrice (non devono risultare lenti). Ho raddoppiato, poi gli elastici sui quattro angoli, allo stesso modo.
I cut the cardboard slightly smaller size of the cover closed, enough to cover the edges of the fabric folded previously. I cut the t-shirt’s red elastics, placing them in the four corners of the board and secure with removable tape. Then I folded on the other side of the board and I stapled them well to end (they do not have to be slow). I doubled, then the elastic bands on the four corners, in the same way.
5) Ho rivestito il cartoncino incollandovi sempre della stoffa, sia per creare un po’ di spessore che per rifinire meglio l’interno della cover. Anche per questa ho ripiegato i lembi sotto al cartoncino. Stesso lavoro, rivestito di stoffa ma senza elastici, va fatto sul lato opposto, con un altro cartoncino un po’ più largo che vada a coprire l’altro lato interno della copertina e l’interno del dorso.
Per quest’ultimo lato, sul pezzo di stoffa avevo precedentemente cucito a mano una tasca che mi è utile per contenere un pannetto per la pulizia dello schermo (è un’opzione!).
I coated the board always by glueing on the fabric, both to create a bit of thickness and to finish better the inside of the cover. Also for this I folded the flaps under the board. Same work, covered by fabric but without elastics, should be done on the opposite side, with another board a bit wider, able to cover the other inner side of the cover and the inside of the back.
For this side, on the cloth piece I had previously hand-sewed pocket that is useful to me to contain an antistatic cleaning screen cloth (as option!).
6) Dopo che i due cartoncini rivestiti si sono asciugati, li ho incollati nell’interno della copertina, facendo in modo che quello più lungo avesse un lembo di stoffa sporgente coperto dall’altro cartoncino.
Questa è un’operazione a cui va prestata attenzione. Infatti, il cartoncino interno con gli elastici, che andranno a reggere il tablet, deve essere incollato perfettamente. Come rinforzo si può usare, combinato con la colla, anche del nastro biadesivo largo per moquette.
After the two coated boards had dried, I glued them inside the inner, making sure that the longer one had a strip of fabric that had to be covered with the other board.
You should pay attention to this action. In fact, the board inside with the rubber bands, which will hold the tablet, must be pasted perfectly. As reinforcement a double-sided tape for carpet can be used, combined with glue.
7) Dopo aver aspettato che si asciugasse il tutto, ho cucito al centro del dorso della copertina un nastro grande. Ad un’estremità ho creato con gli stessi tipi di elastici, un’asola, mentre all’altra ho attaccato il bottone grande. Poi, a questo nastro ho cucito sul retro della copertina un nastro più stretto ma più lungo, dotando le estremità di asola e bottone, come nel primo.
La lunghezza di questi due nastri deve assicurare una chiusura perfetta della cover in senso orizzontale e verticale, in modo che se accidentalmente il tablet uscisse dagli elastici, non uscirà comunque dalla sua cover protettiva.
After waiting for everything dried, I sewed in the middle of the back cover a big ribbon. At one end of it I created with the same type of elastics a buttonhole, while on the other I attacked the big button. Then, on the back cover, on this ribbon I sewed another one which was narrower but longer, equipping the ends of it a buttonhole and button, as in the first.
The length of these two tapes, should ensure a perfect closing of the cover horizontally and vertically, so that if the tablet accidentally come out from the elastic bands, however it will not come out from its protective cover.
Ho già testato la cover durante questa prima settimana e sono molto soddisfatta, perché con il caldo che sta facendo in questi giorni la tenuta della colla è perfetta. Forse in futuro dovrò sostituire i due nastri con due fettucce elastiche, perché il nastro che ho scelto è un tipo che a lungo andare si allenta un po’.
Però, volete mettere? Ho ottenuto una bella cover a costo zero e con materiale quasi interamente riciclato!!! ;)
I tested the cover during this first week and are very satisfied, because, despite the heat of these days, the tightness of the glue is perfect. Maybe in the future I will have to replace the two ribbons with two elastic straps, because the ribbons I have chosen can loose tightness in long terms.
However, isn’t a good idea? I got a nice cover at no cost and with almost entirely recycled materials!!! ;)
