La creatrice ormai la conoscete, è Karen Kannard, meglio conosciuta come Almost Mrs Average.
In circa più di un anno di condivisione di idee, emozioni, preoccupazioni, progetti e stile di vita, è nata da lei (spinta dalle richieste di noi lettori del suo blog personale) l’idea di un sito che raccogliesse informazioni su marche e prodotti eco-sostenibili, più specificatamente vicine alla riduzione degli imballaggi e al loro riciclaggio.
You know yet who is the creative mind, she is Karen Kannard, better known as Almost Mrs Average.
In about a year and more of sharing of ideas, emotions, concerns, projects and lifestyle, –inspired by request from us, the readers of her own blog – she had the idea of a site, that pick up information about brands and products eco-sustainable, more specifically close to the reduction of packaging and their recycling.

Il sito in realtà è partito già da qualche settimana e già comincia ad avere un grande successo.
I post sono scritti da più autori e chiunque volendo, può contribuire alla segnalazione di prodotti interessanti che spingano al riuso, al riciclo e a produrre meno rifiuti. Il sito non è soggetto a sponsorizzazioni e i singoli autori mettono semplicemente a disposizione le loro esperienze per facilitare anche ai meno ‘impegnati’ una strada agevole verso la riduzione dei rifiuti.
The site is actually started a few weeks ago and it is already beginning to have a great success.
Posts are written by many authors, and anyone who wish to, can contribute to report of interesting products that encourage reuse, recycling and producing less waste. The site is not subject to sponsorship and individual authors simply provide their experiences to help even the ‘least committed’ to find an easy way to reduce waste.

Ci sono già numerose segnalazioni di prodotti commercializzati a livello internazionale. Anche se la lingua è inglese e alcuni prodotti sono diversi o non commercializzati qui in Italia, io consiglio comunque di dare uno sguardo per capire che fuori dal nostro piccolo mondo qualcosa si sta muovendo ed è qualcosa che può coinvolgere anche noi!
There are already numerous reports of products internationally sold. Even if the language of site is English, and some products are different or not sold in Italy, however, I advice to take a look to see that, outside our little world, something is moving and this can involve us!

È la prova che lo stile di vita a Zero Rifiuti non è impossibile, e che, se lo vogliamo, noi consumatori possiamo spingere la produzione industriale a convertirsi in scelte più responsabili sul proprio impatto ambientale.
It is the evidence that Zero Waste lifestyle is not impossible, and that if the we want, as consumers we can push industrial production to be converted into more responsible choices about their environmental impact.

Sarta alle prime armi / The very new seamstress

Tornando un po’ indietro nel tempo… ricordate l’evento ‘Sartaperfetta’ nel fine settimana prima di Pasqua? Era stato apprezzato da tante di voi, ma purtroppo quel giorno non ha avuto un grande successo, causa maltempo.
Going back a little in time... do you remember the event ‘The perfect seamstress’ during the weekend before Easter? It was appreciated by so many of you, but unfortunately that day it wasn’t a great success, due to bad weather.

Dopo aver fatto la nostra mattinata di volontariato presso il locale Gruppo di Acquisto Solidale, ci eravamo recati ugualmente in Piazza Cavour, a Rimini, per andare almeno a salutare le nostre amiche di Mani Tese, che rivedremo di sicuro sabato 25 Aprile in una nuova occasione...
Le avevamo trovate ad impacchettare quello che era rimasto sui banchi: passamaneria, rocche di filo da cucito, fili per il ricamo, bottoni di vari materiali, dimensioni e fogge, e soprattutto bellissimi scampoli di stoffa. Tutta roba non usata ma semplicemente donata, quindi in ottime condizioni.
After our morning of volunteering at the Local Exchanging Group, we also went to Cavour Square in Rimini, at least to go to say hello to our friends of Mani Tese, which we will surely meet again on Saturday, April 25, in a new appointment...
We found the girls packaging what was left on the bench: braids, sewing wire reels, wires for embroidery, buttons of various materials, sizes and styles, and especially beautiful remnants of cloth. The whole stuff was not from second hand but simply given, therefore, in excellent conditions.

E siccome qualcosa era ancora fuori dagli scatoloni, non mi sono fatta sfuggire l’occasione di acquistare tre scampoli e un cesto coi bordi alti e manici per le prossime scampagnate alla ricerca di erbette di campo…
And because something was out of the boxes, I didn’t miss the opportunity to buy three remnants of cloth and a basket with high sides and handles for future outings in search of herbs from fields...

Sono tre grandi teli: uno di lino bianco/panna, grande m 4 x 1,15, e due in lana, uno verde oliva scuro, grande m 1,50 x 1,60, e un altro verde/marrone grande m 1,60 x 1,50.
A questo punto vi chiederete cosa ci faccio io con queste stoffe, se non ho talento come sarta! Eh eh!
Nella mia testolina, quando ho visto questi bellissimi scampoli ho immaginato dei costumi medievali!
Three large towels: a white/cream linen one, great 4 x 1,15 meters, and two wool ones, an olive green dark, large 1,50 x 1,60 meters, and another green/brown 1,60 x 1,50 meters wide.
At this point you may wonder what I’ll do with these materials, if I don’t have much talent as seamstress! Eh eh!
In my head when I saw these beautiful remnants of cloth I imagined medieval costumes!

Ve l’avevo già detto che sono appassionata di medioevo, per hobby più che altro. Una passione nata da una cena medievale organizzata da un caro amico, dove abbiamo improvvisato dei costumi comprandoli su un banchetto dell’usato a Roma. Avevamo, poi, cominciato a seguire tornei e giostre in vari luoghi d’Italia: Narni, Arezzo, Soriano nel Cimino, Mondaino… Soprattutto a Narni è nato il pallino per l’autoproduzione di costumi, vedendo quelli stupendi che i figuranti del corteo storico indossano durante le parate!
I already said that we are passionate about the Middle Ages – as a hobby – more than anything else. A passion born from a medieval dinner organized by a dear friend, where we improvised costumes buying them on a second hand banquet in Rome. We then started to follow tournaments and jousts in various places in Italy: Narni, Arezzo, Soriano nel Cimino, Mondaino ... Especially in Narni I was wondering to self-sewing costumes, seeing wonderful ones that citizen wear during the historical parade!

Tre anni, quindi, fa mi sono cimentata nel cucire a mano un costume da dama di corte (forse!), più o meno del Trecento, mettendo insieme degli scampoli di velluto da tende dimesse comprate sempre al mercatino di via Sannio a Roma. È stato impegnativo ma divertente, soprattutto per la soddisfazione di vederlo finito e indossarlo (nella foto accanto, grazie a Marzia).
So, three years ago, I trained in hand-sewing a costume as court-lady (maybe!) of the fourteenth century about, bringing together the remnants of resigned velvet curtains, I had even bought in a second hand market in via Sannio in Rome. It was challenging but fun, especially for the satisfaction to see it finished and wear (aside in the photo, thanks to Marzia).


L’ho sfruttato poco, però. Nonostante gli inviti da parte degli amici di Narni a partecipare in costume alla loro festa, il mio era risultato un costume troppo “da nobile”. All’infuori dai costumi realizzati dalle sartorie, che curano al minimo dettaglio non solo la lavorazione ma anche la ricerca storica, sono ammessi solo costumi da paesani…
Though I used it a little. Despite invitations from friends to participate in costume to their celebrations in Narni, my costume resulted too much ‘noble’. With the exception of the costumes made by tailors, who take care to detail not only the processing but also the historical research, the only costumes permitted are peasants ones...

Così ho pensato di realizzarne uno, seguendo dei modelli trovati su alcune riviste e sul web. Per questo costume da paesana, realizzerò la camicia lunga sottostante in lino e lo ‘sparato’ superiore in lana. La lana più pesante invece mi servirà per realizzare un farsetto semplice per Irish che già ha camiciola, calzamaglia e accessori.
So I thought of creating one like this, according to the models found on some magazines and the web. For this peasant costume, I’ll fulfil the underlying long shirt with linen ad the shirt front with wool top. With the heaviest wool, instead, I’ll realize to achieve a simple jacket for Irish who already had blouses, tights and accessories.

Quello che mi chiedo è se avrò tempo a disposizione per realizzare questi capi... volevo fossero pronti per fine mese, in tempo per l’evento che vi andrò a raccontare in un prossimo post! ;)
What I wonder is whether I will have time to make these garments ... I wanted they to be ready for the end of the month, in time for the event that I'm going to tell you in next posts! ;)

Sorprese pasquali / Easter surprises

Mmmh… dunque, vediamo di riprendere il bandolo della matassa… Il susseguirsi di eventi (più tristi che lieti) mi hanno fatto perdere un po’ il filo. Ma vorrei tranquillizzare tutti. La vita va avanti ed è bello poter contare su di voi quando si è giù! Ancora grazie a tutti di cuore per il supporto che ci avete dato in questi giorni!
Mmmh... So, let’s see to find the skein bandol... The succession of events (more sad then happy) I lost the wire for sometimes. But let me reassure everyone. Life goes on and it's great to be able to count on you when I’m down! Thanks again to all from heart for support you gave us these days!

La Pasqua è servita ad allentare un po’ la tensione di questi giorni, allontanando le preoccupazioni.
Siamo rimasti a casa per queste feste che sono state abbastanza movimentate, ma ugualmente piacevoli. Ho avuto modo di rivedere alcune mie parenti che vivono in Val D’Aosta, venute qui per qualche giorno, ed è stata per me una grande gioia, trascorrere qualche ora con loro la sera a cena.
Easter served to ease slightly tension of these days, removing the concerns.
We were at home for the holidays that have been fairly busy, but also pleasant. I had the opportunity to review some of my relatives who live in Val D'Aosta, come here for a few days, and has been for me a great joy to spend some time with them in the evening for dinner.

Per come sono fatta io, non può passare una festa senza un dono fatto a chi sta più a cuore, e così prima e dopo la Pasqua ho fatto diversi giri per cercare dei pensierini, senza spendere troppo ma anche senza fare rifiuti! Infatti, avrei dovuto postare questi suggerimenti prima, ma dovevo aspettare di vederne il risultato… è questo è quanto sono riuscita a combinare.
As I always do, I can’t pass a party without giving gifts to those who are most in my heart, and so before and after Easter I made several rounds to find gifts, without spending too much but without doing waste! In fact, I would have had to post these tips before, but I had to wait to see the result... that is what I managed to combine.

Tanto per cominciare non c’è Pasqua senza cioccolata! Ma, a parte un paio di uova grandi, di cioccolata biologica fair trade, con involucri riciclabili o riutilizzabili, da regalare ai figli di amici, volevo cercare delle confezioni con ovetti, ovviamente senza plastica, per fare altri piccoli regali.
For a start there is no Easter without chocolate! But, apart from a few large eggs, of organic fair trade chocolate with recyclable or reusable wrappers, to give to our friends’ children, I wanted to look for little eggs packs, of course without plastic, for doing other small gifts.

Girando per il mio quartiere ho trovato, in un negozio che vende oggetti per bomboniere, due vasi piccoli decorati, uno di ceramica e uno di latta trattata a decoupage, e una scatoletta di metallo colorata. Ora non mi restava che cercare degli ovetti in vendita sfusi. Mi sono ricordata che al centro di Rimini c’è un negozio di dolciumi e liquori e ho aspettato la prima occasione buona per andarci. Ho trovato quel che cercavo: 500 gr di buonissimi ovetti di cioccolata al latte ricoperti da foglio di alluminio, che mi sono stati serviti, sì, in un sacchetto di plastica che però è ora ancora integro e riutilizzabile.
Around my neighbourhoods I found a shop that sells items for wedding keep-sakes, two small decorated pots, a ceramic one and a metal decoupage treated one, and a metal coloured box. Now it only remained to search for eggs sold in bulk. I remembered that in the heart of Rimini there’s a candy and liquor shop and I waited for the first opportunity to go there. I found what I tried: 500 gr of wonderful milk chocolate little eggs covered with tin foil, which have been served, so, in a plastic bag, still intact and reusable.

Inoltre, nello stesso negozio abbiamo preso una bottiglia di ottimo vino dolce Albana e una confezione (in carta) dei famosi biscotti Cantuccini. Sempre per fare un altro regalo.
Moreover, in the same shop, we took a bottle of fine and sweet Albana wine and a pack (paper) of the famous biscuits Cantuccini. Also to make another gift.

Così il sabato santo mi sono messa di buona lena a confezionare questi pacchetti con fantasia ed altri materiali riciclati da regali precedenti:

Ma alla fine mi mancava ancora qualcuno a cui pensare… allora sono uscita all’ultimo minuto alla disperata ricerca di qualcosa da regalare a zero rifiuti! Accidenti! I supermercati erano stati svuotati dall’ondata di turisti sopraggiunta per la festa e le pasticcerie avevano prezzi e confezioni improponibili! L’ultima speranza… sullo scaffale dell’ultimo supermercato facevano capolino tre ‘pulcini’ di cioccolata di una nota marca dolciaria… non convinta ho guardato attentamente la confezione e sono stata sorpresa dal vedere che il foglio di cui erano ricoperti era alluminio e addirittura c’erano chiare indicazioni di riciclo!
Non ho più esitato e col bottino sono tornata a casa, passando da un tabaccaio a comprare tre sacchetti in carta colorata!
But in the end I was still missing someone to think... then I went out in the last minute desperate searching for something to give with zero waste! Damn! Supermarkets had been emptied by the wave of tourists come here for holydays and pastry shops had unacceptable rates and packages for gifts! The last hope… on the shelf of a supermarket three chocolate 'chicks' of a famous brand peeped out... not convinced I looked carefully the pack and I was surprised to see that the sheet which they was coated was aluminium and there were even clear signs of recycling!
I have no hesitation and I returned home with the booty, passing from a tobacconist to buy three bags of coloured paper!

I regalini sono stati apprezzati del tutto e addirittura la cara zia di Irish, conoscendomi mi ha rimandato indietro l’involucro giallo che avevo creato, di modo che potessi ancora riutilizzarlo! :D
The gifts were very appreciated and also the dear Irish’ aunt, knowing me well, sent back to me the yellow jacket I used for wrapping her gift, so that I could still reuse it! LOL

Che bello sapere che si possono fare dei regali senza fare rifiuti non riciclabili. L’anno prossimo non potrò far altro che migliorare… alla prossima Pasqua!
Nice to know that you can make gifts without making non-recyclable waste. Next year I can’t help but improve... so, to the next Easter!
