Zero Rifiuti per una settimana! Che emozione! Si parteeee!!!
Here we are to the long waited appointment with our challenge: Zero Waste Week! What an exciting adventure! Let’s gooooo!!!Vi scrivo al volgere della serata… sembra che l’inizio di questa prima giornata vada piuttosto bene.
Però prima di dirvi qualcosa in proposito, ho da raccontarvi molto brevemente quel che è successo ieri.

Ecomondo ‘09. Non voglio giocarmi questa carta subito, aspetterò la fine della settimana Zero Rifiuti per scrivere un articolo apposito. L’unica cosa che voglio anticiparvi è che là ho incontrato alcune persone con cui ho scambiato quattro piacevoli chiacchiere e poi ho fatto degli acquisti personali che mi porteranno a produrre ancora meno rifiuti… almeno mi auguro! Quindi, come visita, rispetto allo scorso anno, è stata molto proficua.
You knew that yesterday was a crucial day: in the morning we went to the Fair of Rimini, Ecomondo ‘09. I don’t want to reveal any of this now, but prefer to wait the end of Zero Waste Week to write about it. The only thing I want to anticipate is that there I met some people with which I changed pleasant chats and then I do green shopping for myself in order to do less waste… I hope! So this visit was more profitable than that of the last year. Durante il pomeriggio, fino a serata, invece, io e Irish siamo stati impegnati con le altre fantastiche volontarie dell’associazione Mani Tese nella gestione del banchetto dell’usato e della “boicottega”, all’esterno del Palazzo del Podestà. Ma anche qui dovrei dedicare un articolo a parte, pur se già molti di voi sanno già di cosa parliamo. Però vorrei aggiungere che qui ho incontrato un’altra persona in gamba, Miriam, i cui commenti ospito da qualche giorno nei vari post. L’ho conosciuta la sera dell’
incontro con Leo Hickman e l’ho ritrovata ieri col primo libro di Hickman in mano, preso in prestito in biblioteca (grande idea, visto che non si trova in vendita!). Che bello, sembra di aver trovato una persona che condivide appieno i miei sforzi e la ringrazio per la valanga di complimenti che mi ha fatto. Sono contenta di trasferirle gran parte del mio entusiasmo!
During the afternoon, until evening, instead, Irish and me were committed, with the other fantastic girls of the association Mani Tese, for the management of the bench of second hands objects and the ‘boycott shop’, out of the Podesta’s Palace. But also for this event I should dedicate a special post, even though many of you well know of what I am speaking about. But I want to add that here I met another wonderful person, Miriam, who’s comment are in some last posts. I knew her the evening of the meeting with Leo Hickman, and I newly found her yesterday, with Hickman’s first book in the hand, she borrowed in the library (great idea, given that the book seems missing in bookshops!). Wow, it seems like I’ve found one who shares most of my efforts and I’m grateful to her because she made me lost of compliments. I’m very happy to give her most of my enthusiasm!Per il resto la serata è andata discretamente, dal momento che abbiamo dovuto arrangiare da soli un’illuminazione per l’area esterna di Ecomia, dove eravamo stati collocati. Molte le partecipazioni alla boicottega, stranamente la gente inizia a farsi coinvolgere nell’uso più critico del proprio cervello per i propri consumi.
Al ritorno a casa – stanchissimi per le due maratone – abbiamo approntato una cena frugale a base di zucca… e sì, era la notte di Halloween!!! Io e Irish siamo sempre presi da questa tradizione europea, ma per chi non lo sapesse, anche molto italiana e per niente affatto, come molti credono, americana!
Già dal pomeriggio avevamo approntato un punto rifornimento dolcetti (con involucro riciclabile!) avanti al nostro cancello, per i bambini che sarebbero passati, ed ha funzionato tutto come volevamo. Anche la nostra zucca era in bella mostra, riciclando vecchie candele che avevamo e di nostra produzione. Ma dopo cena e una bella mangiata di caldarroste (le adoro), abbiamo voluto fare anche noi una camminata per vedere le altre zucche del quartiere… e allora abbiamo fatto una specie di gesto solenne: abbiamo buttato il nostro ultimo sacchetto della spazzatura! Eh eh!
For the rest the evening was almost good, even if we did arrange the lights for the external area of the Ecomia festival where we were set. We didn’t aspect so may participants for the test of the ‘boycott shop’, it seems strange if people start to feel involved in a more critic use of their brain for their own consume!
Returning home – very tired for the two marathons – we invented a dinner with the use of pumpkin… yes, it was Halloween night! Irish and me are very fond of these European traditions, and if someone ignores it, this tradition is also truly Italian too and not American as someone could think!
Since the afternoon we created a ‘treat’ furnishing point with chocolate and brittles (all with recyclable packaging!) in front of our door for the children that should have come, and all it went as we planned. Our pumpkin was well shown, with recycled or handmade candles. But after dinner and a big feed of roasted chestnuts (I love them), we wanted to go out for a tour of the neighbours’ pumpkins… then we made a solemn gesture: to throw away our last waste bag! Eh eh!
Ed eccoci stamattina svegli un pochino intontiti ma con tante cose da fare… innanzitutto dare una riassettata alla casa, lavare i piatti della sera prima, il bucato accumulato da settimane per via delle scorse piogge e una spazzata per terra… ops! E la polvere?
And here’s today morning, we were a bit dazed, but we had a lot of things to do… to clean home, to wash the dishes from the last dinner, to wash a lot of clothes we cumulated in weeks of rain and then to sweep floor! Oh no… dust! – Problema numero uno… dove buttare la polvere? Io sono sempre stata un po’ restia nel buttare la polvere nella compostiera o nell’umido, poiché a volte nella polvere si possono trovare frammenti di intonaco, fili di vestiti sintetici, pezzi di vetro (come ci è successo di recente)… Però ho avuto modo di vedere che molti usano buttare la polvere nella compostiera… ok, ho dato una controllata che non ci fosse nulla di “estraneo” e l’ho riversata nell’umido (si degraderà più velocemente negli appositi impianti di compostaggio).
Issue number one… where to throw dust? I was always restive to throw dust in the compost bin or in the organic waste, because sometime there you can find piece of plaster, yarns from synthetic clothes, piece of glass (as recently happened to us)… But I could see that many use to throw dust in the compost. Ok, I controlled that there was nothing ‘stranger’ and I throw it in the humid fraction of waste we use to collect (its degradation will happen in the compost plants of the city).
Per ora nessun altro problema. Gli altri rifiuti della giornata sono stati fazzoletti e tovaglioli di carta (riciclata o Fsc) sporchi, un paio di sacchetti di carta del pane, croste di formaggio (gorgonzola e caciotta biologica) e qualche nocciolo di frutta, tutto finito nell’umido, mentre i gusci delle castagne arrosto sono stati buttati nella compostiera, insieme ai fondi del caffè.
No other problems until now. Other waste of the day: disposable paper handkerchiefs and napkins (paper is recycled or at least Fsc), a pair of bread paper bags, cheese rind (gorgonzola and organic creamy) and some fruit stones, all in the humid fraction of waste. Then chestnut shells were thrown in the compost bin, with the coffee ground. 
Questa mattina avevo per l’occasione lavato il bidone a doppio scompartimento. Nella foto potete vedere le dimensioni dei due contenitori interni. Quello più grande è attualmente utilizzato per il rifiuto umido, che si riempie molto più velocemente. Quello piccolo è utilizzato per il rifiuto indifferenziato, che come potete leggere meglio in
quest’altro post, vuotavamo circa ogni dieci/quindici giorni.
Quindi la nostra attenzione per questa settimana sarà quella di non far finire nulla in questo contenitore più piccolo… saremo a vedere e vi aggiornerò ogni giorno per raccontarvi eventuali problemi.
This morning, for the occasion, I washed the double home bin. In the photo you can see the dimensions of the two inner boxes of the bin. The biggest one is actually used for humid waste and it becomes full in a shorter time. We use the little one for the waste that we can’t recycle or compost, as you can see in this old post, we empty it every 10/15 days. Molte persone mi hanno chiesto come si fa. Beh, in breve posso riassumere:
– rifornimento di latte e detersivi alla spina
– acquisto di prodotti solo con involucro riciclabile
– acquisto di prodotti sfusi (frutta, verdura, riso, pane)
– acqua del rubinetto o dalla sorgente locale (Sacramora)
Many people asked me how it works. Well I can shortly resume:
– buying milk and detergents on tap
– buying products with only recyclable packaging
– buying bulk products (fruit, vegetables, rice, bread)
– water on tap or from the local source (Sacramora) Utilissimo è l’uso della compostiera domestica che affianca la raccolta differenziata del rifiuto umido. Poi ovviamente raccolta differenziata di vetro, plastica, carta, alluminio, acciaio. Per rifiuti particolari conferiamo dove è possibile all’isola ecologica predisposta dal servizio locale di raccolta dei rifiuti (elettrodomestici rotti, metalli di vario tipo, legno, scarti voluminosi del giardino, olio esausto, batterie esauste, lampade a fluorescenza). Ove nemmeno questo servizio preveda la raccolta, allora ci ingegniamo nel riuso. Ma prima di tutto questo va considerata un’attenzione particolare a non sprecare.
Very useful is the use of home compost bin, which is combined with the collection of humid waste taken by the local waste service. Then recycling glass, paper, plastic, aluminium, steel. For special waste we bring all to the HWRC (out of order appliances, various kinds of metal, wood, big garden waste, used oil, used batteries and fluorescent lamps). Where the service isn’t efficient we think reuse. But over all we consider to not-making waste.In ogni caso questo è il momento delle vostre domande! Non siate timidi e sparate a zero! Magari in questa settimana non capiterà tutto l’impossibile, per cui se volete sottopormi ad un interrogatorio per sapere come smaltirei una qualsiasi cosa che vi angustia, fatevi avanti!
