Bentornati su Dandaworld! / Welcome back to Dandaworld!

We are in 2011! And I wish that everyone has begun in the best way!
For me it started “with a bang” ... in the sense that sooner or later I’ll break out for my many commitments managing to occupy my spare time too!
So sorry for my absence. But I have not forgotten you.
Indeed I often thought of you and was assaulted by a wave of remorses for wanting to tell you many things and not have the time to do so.
But instead of telling you why, I would like to take this opportunity to give a new life to the blog and suggest some avenues to be explored dribs and drabs, maybe your own.

Comincio innanzitutto col salutare e ringraziare vecchi e nuovi amici.
I’ll begin to greet and thank old and new friends.

First Compost John, directly from York, UK, who encourages us with the practice of home composting. He came trough my blog in comments to this old post – the discussion on compostable things – and I discovered that he is a smart person, who does not surrender in front of difficulties that a eco-sustainable life can bring. But I still have much to know about John. Follow him with me on his very active blog Low Carbon Lifestyle (in English)!

E bravi i nostri amici d’oltremanica, continuate così!
Then I wanted to congratulate with the dear Mrs. Green at Myzerowaste.com, whose success in an effort to minimize waste with of all her family, landed right here in Italy, on the pages of the newspaper La Repubblica. The impressive news hit the Italians and social networks are still talking about her wonderful family. Just think that my Facebook friends proposed me continuing the challenge taken over a year ago, with a new aim: the result of the Strauss’s challenge, that is only a bag of trash throughout the year.
Well, I must say that the aim is difficult enough, but it doesn’t scares me so much.
Let we see. Meanwhile, it is very important to continue to look forward, discovering that it is possible to reduce our waste.
And well done to our friends across the Channel, keep it up!

Per fortuna, poi ne abbiamo trovato uno, senza marchi truffaldini e con pulsante on/off.
Another person I want to thank for his constant attention to the problem of energy wastage is Riccardo, at Wutel.net, which told in advance a thorny issue for me. The energy waste of digital decoders.
Like all Italians Irish and me had to switch to the DTTV signal, last December.
We went looking for a decoder to be connected to our LCD TV, which we already have, but we did not use due to the presence in the house of a CRT one – the latter is currently parked on a table, waiting to be reused in connection with the DVD recorder… far be it from us by throwing it away! –.
In short, we have already had to change the decoder once. Apart from many technical reasons –malfunction, inability to record programs – we had fallen into a trap-fake label. The box had clearly a label that boasted the characteristic of energy-saving of the decoder. But ... we found that the decoder didn’t have the on/off button and had to remain permanently in stand-by, otherwise the de-tuning of channels.
Blimey! Can you imagine the increase in energy consumption that then we would saw in bill?
Then we noticed that all units bearing a energy saving symbol, had no switch-off button!
Fortunately, then we found one without that label and with the button. But to be sure that the equipment would not even consume energy when turned off – it sends a strange hissing sound – we connected TV, decoder and other equipments to a beautiful extension cable with button, so as recommended by our Riccardo.
I highly recommend reading his article on the energy consumption of decoders, realizing that this digital deviltry will cost to Italian families much more than we thought in terms of money and environment!
And please, pay attention if you have yet to buy these gadgets!

Persino i negozi continuano a rifilarle.
And after saying hello to these friends blogger, I want you to open your eyes to a problem that I feel a lot.
You all know by now that 2011 is the year, when, here in Italy, the use of plastic bags is finally banned!
But ... are we sure that everyone is following the guidelines?
I am not very sure. It was enough for me to have a walk trough the market in Rimini... I saw plastic bags everywhere! Even in the shops.

Viene chiamato ECM biodegradabile.
Ve ne faccio vedere qui due esempi:
But that’s not all. You have to be on guard. There are around some bags that at a first look have nothing other than those banned, but are presented as biodegradable ones! It is the old Polyethylene with additives that accelerate the degradation. It is called ECM biodegradable.
Here I show two examples:

It seems that this type of plastic is not compatible with the organic waste collection as they say. The EP – which, among other things, is derived from oil and, therefore, we shold use as little as possible – does not degrade in time according to composting plants.

At this authoritative link you can find the news that confirms my suspects.

So my recommendation is to always carry the reusable bags made in canvas or other durable materials! And who have a business might be careful on these eco-fakes and maybe join the initiative of “Porta la Sporta”!
But that is another topic that I will come to tell soon!

Un allegro, bianco, e soffice Natale!!! / Enjoy a Happy, White and Soft Christmas!!!

La compostiera sommersa dalla neve...

Ebbene, sì, ridendo e scherzando siamo quasi arrivati al... Natale!
Well, yes, laughing and joking with us, here we are nearly to... Christmas!
And the atmosphere there is all: last week lots of snow fell!
Since I'm here, it's the first time I see it falling so much, close to the sea.
Now is slowly melting, but I cannot forget some moments spent in solitude, waiting for the train delay, returning home from the office, in a slow falling snow with a great silence around me, humming Christmas songs to myself. Or the long walk to work, with sinking frozen feet in the snow of a park, but with a warm heart full of happiness. And again on a shining white Saturday morning, Irish and me, illuminated by the sun, on the the snow dunes overlooking the sea!

True, there were tense moments for the inability of travel (everything becomes more complicated by public transport) and fatigue at the end of a busy day. There were moments of confusion, in the city center looking as a mad for some gifts without waste, not trivial or unwanted gifts.

But they added sweet moments, like making again decorations of the Christmas tree, the scent of gingerbread made from my love, and an infinite number of flights and songs of birds, around, looking for something to eat.

Right here I would like to open a small parenthesis and sweet, the dear friend Luby (from the blog L'Eco del Mondo) is collecting ideas on how to make a manger for our hungry feathered friends.
I want to put my little contribution. A shelter was built with pieces from an old wood DIY bottle holder by Ikea that is no more sold.
There Irish and me place regularly sweet and bread crumbs, (especially cookies and cake), seeds and dried fruit. There come to see robins, great tits, sparrows and blackbirds.
This year was also revised slightly by the black redstart.
I'm not sure if the current visitor robin is Arancino... is still too shy.
In any case, I might say that it is very difficult to accustom birds to a crib like that. They are initially very suspicious, but sometimes the frost and snow are so that they come closer. It takes a lot of patience, one of my new colleague says – she is super-expert in birding –!
I therefore thank Luby, for reminding me about this.
Unfortunately at the moment I can not offer better pictures, but as soon as I will have time, I'll post.

Rejoiced therefore by sound and harmonious "tweet tweet" we are going to spend a happy Christmas with our loved ones.
Our hope is that everyone can find sweet moments to spend with people we love, find serenity in everyday things, find smiles and hugs, gifts and find warmth in small things done with the heart, finding a word or a thought who is far away and so desperately needs.
Basically this is Christmas!

Danda & Irish

A very Merry Christmas,
And a Happy New Year,
Let's hope it's a good one,
Without any waste! ;)

The road to sustainability is long and winding... especially taking the bus!

We left at the start of the European Week for Waste Reduction and I promised that I would let you know the results of my efforts avoiding to create waste outdoor.

Well, believe it or not, I threw away only a small cardboard tray and a towel that I couldn’t
recycle. It was due to the lack of brown bins in the place where I ate lunch very fast that day.
I had my breaks out without plastic cups and disposable wrappings. I haven’t photos to document it, but trust me!
I always carried with me a reusable plastic cup and a bottle previously held and filled as needed. For lunch I bought pizza and sandwiches at cafes, eat no pre-packaged food. I drank coffee at the bar, strictly in ceramic cup, I turned the sugar strictly with a metal teaspoon and recycled the paper bag of the same sugar. Then I refreshed mouth with mint candies in a recyclable metal box...

I can not deny, however, that although these breaks are good for environment, cost a little for my budget. Several handfuls euros for a drop of coffee, a branch of a pizza or flatbread...
I thought, therefore, that I needed to improve the effort. After that week, I tried to do best, preparing food at home and bringing it in a reusable box.
Needless to say, the attempt did not last long, because these days the weather was very bad and not suitable for eating outside. I therefore had to fall back on the usual small bar or usual pizza-cut / piadineria.

In short, to stay away without polluting is really difficult.
If we add the number of shifts, it is still harder!
Normally I take the bus to move from home to the centre and to out of town.
But lately I find it quite difficult to understand the pathways of AM [the public transport company] in Rimini. I get confused between the various letters assigned to the same buses... the result: sometimes I really panicked!
Not to mention inaccurate timetable and the not-provided-showers on a sidewalk, in a rainy day, waiting for the bus...
Aaaaaarg!
Sometimes, then, I switch to the B-plan, and if I’m late, I get down in advance from the bus and take a public bike to get the class in time.
In short, is like a Fantozzi’s scene [an Italian movies comedian, very similar in his misfortune to Donald Duck]!

Finalmente ho ricominciato a lavorare!!!
Well, then this is the moment to update you on one thing. In all this turmoil, you can definitely return to smile ...
I finally started working again!

No no, non voglio abbandonarlo!
I am therefore in a real mess... and I work and follow the class, I follow the class and work, when I get home I’m destroyed, and I cannot neglect the voluntary commitments!
And the blog?
No no, I don’t want to leave it! I’ll keep writing for you, at the cost of losing regulars readers, writing only once in a while.
And I’m sorry to have no more time to come visiting your blog...
Be patient... time a couple of months and I’ll find the balance myself.

Mi ostino, inoltre a non fare rifiuti, a prendere l’autobus, a mantenere tutti i miei impegni.
E spero di sopravvivere! :)
I’ll keep also not to waste, to take the bus, and keep all my commitments.
And I hope I’ll survive! :)
Meanwhile, go to see this photo of the rubbish collected by me and Irish during the European Week for Waste Reduction, plus the next one.
300 grams of non-recyclable plastics, receipts, dust and pieces of sellotape.
Not bad I say!
