“Non c’è trippa per gatti” dicono a Roma! / ‘There’s no tripe for cats’ they said in Rome

Questo non è un post sui modi di dire romaneschi, ma uso questo detto solamente perché rappresenta bene una situazione in cui i ‘gatti’ siamo noi, quei cittadini che vorremmo fare una raccolta differenziata come si deve, e la ‘trippa’ (che, anche se a me non piace, è un cibo succulento per i felini) in questo caso sarebbe un adeguato sistema di raccolta dei rifiuti…
E ora racconterò il perché di questo strano paragone.
This is not a post about how to say in Roman dialect, but I use this saying only because it well represents a situation where the ‘cats’ are us, those citizens who would like to recycle as it should be, and the ‘tripe’ (which food is succulent for cats, even if I do not like it) in this case would be a proper system of waste collection...
And now tell you why this strange comparison.

Giovedì scorso c’è stato un ennesimo incontro – un’apprezzata iniziativa organizzata dal Comune di Rimini – tra i cittadini dei quartieri e delle frazioni della città, (in questo caso il quartiere 5), e i tecnici della raccolta differenziata della municipalizzata locale che gestisce lo smaltimento rifiuti. Non vi dirò tutto quello che è successo perché ultimamente il rapporto tra le due parti è molto in tensione a causa dell’ampliamento dell’inceneritore di cui si occupa lo stesso ente.
Last Thursday there was yet another meeting - a popular initiative organized by the Comune di Rimini - between citizens of the districts and villages of the city (in this case, the district 5), and the technicians of the waste recycling service which operates as for the local waste disposal. I won’t tell you everything happened because recently the relationship between the two parts is in tension due to enlargement of incinerator in which the same body deals.

Ma mi piacerebbe esprimere il mio disappunto per quanto riguarda il progetto illustrato da Hera per la raccolta domiciliare dei rifiuti nella fascia turistica di Rimini.
È questa una fascia che interessa la mia abitazione. Qui, per i tre mesi estivi la vita tranquilla degli abitanti è a dir poco sconvolta dall’afflusso turistico, che, è vero, porta vivacità e ricchezza alla città, ma allo stesso tempo, e mi dispiace ammetterlo, porta spesso disordine e noncuranza dell’ambiente. Così d’estate si vedono più spesso i cassonetti stradali traboccanti di rifiuti di ogni tipo, mischiati anche dove andrebbero invece differenziati. A volte i rifiuti sono lasciati fuori, per strada e spesso nei pressi dei punti di raccolta gli odori non sono proprio gradevoli. E che dire delle sagre e delle feste come la fantomatica “notte rosa”?
But I would like to express my disappointment in the illustrated project by Hera home for the collection of waste in the tourist ‘belt’ of Rimini city.
In this belt there’s my house. Here, for the three summer months the peaceful life of the inhabitants is, to say the least, shocked by tourists who, it is true, bring liveliness and richness to the city, but at the same time, and I regret to admit it, often bring disorder and carelessness. So in summer you can see more often on the road trash bins overflowing waste of all kinds, even mixed where they should be separated. Sometimes waste is left out, often on the street and around the collection points smell aren’t pleasing. And what about the festivals and celebrations such as the elusive ‘Pink Night’?

Inoltre, la fascia turistica, che è individuata a ridosso della ferrovia, verso il mare, è costellata di numerosissime strutture alberghiere che spesso non sanno come gestire i rifiuti (e a volte non ne hanno neanche voglia, come abbiamo avuto modo di ascoltare dai presenti alla riunione). Tuttavia, da un paio d’anni queste sono state obbligate a fare la raccolta differenziata di vetro, organico, carta e imballaggi leggeri (plastica, alluminio e acciaio).
In addition, the tourist belt, which is located close to the railway, towards the sea, is dotted with numerous hotels that often do not know how to manage the waste (and sometimes don’t even want, as we heard from people attending the meeting). However, a couple of years ago hotels were been obliged to make the separate collection of glass, organic, paper and lightweight packaging (plastic, aluminium and steel).

A partire poi dalla scorsa estate, noi residenti, che inizialmente avevamo solamente i bidoni stradali di vetro e carta oltre quelli dell’indifferenziata, abbiamo potuto gioire per l’attivazione della raccolta degli imballaggi leggeri con nuovi bidoni gialli lungo i nostri viali.
Starting then from last summer, we, the residents, –who initially had only on the road recycling bins of glass and paper over those of unrecycled – were able to rejoice in the activation of the collection of light packaging with the new yellow bins along our paths.

Quando è stato annunciato dai media che sarebbe stato attivato un sistema di raccolta domiciliare, abbiamo accolto la notizia come un progresso straordinario! Chi come me ha a cuore questo problema, sa che questo sistema è l’unico in grado di risolvere in maniera drastica problemi come abbandono ed eccessiva produzione di rifiuti ed errori di conferimento nei cassonetti con compromissione del materiale da riciclo!
Oltre a questo, poi, ultimamente, eravamo venuti a sapere, della proposta di chiudere il coperchio dei bidoni con un sistema a serratura con chiave. Questo sistema, ad ogni modo, secondo me, è abbastanza controverso nella nostra situazione, perché va associato ad una meticolosa campagna informativa e seguito da una riduzione della tariffa sui rifiuti (argomento per ora ancora non affrontato).
When it was announced by the media that a doorstep waste collection system would be activated, we welcomed the news as extraordinary progress! Anyone who has this problem to heart, knows that this is the only system capable of tackle problems such as drastic abandonment and excessive production of waste and errors in throwing in bins with the compromising of recycled material!
Besides this, then, ultimately, we came to know of the proposal to close the lid of the bins with a lock with a key. This system, however, in my opinion, is quite controversial in our situation, because it should be associated with a meticulous recycling campaign and followed by a reduction of the tariff on waste (subject not yet addressed for now).

Nonostante l’entusiasmo iniziale con cui ci siamo recati a questa riunione pubblica, contenti di conoscere il nuovo progetto, siamo invece definitivamente rimasti molto delusi, man mano che ci sono state illustrate le modalità.
Despite the initial enthusiasm with which we went to this public meeting, happy to hear of the new project, we were instead permanently very disappointed, as we were shown how.

La zona turistica, infatti, è stata suddivisa in due zone parallele alla costa, dove la raccolta domiciliare avverrà in modi diversi. Nella fascia più a ridosso del mare (in pratica tutti gli edifici delle utenze domestiche che si affacciano sul lungomare) saranno consegnati, casa per casa, nelle unità abitative sotto i quattro appartamenti per stabile, due bidoni da 30 litri per la raccolta di vetro e indifferenziato e due tipi di sacchi per la raccolta di carta e degli imballaggi leggeri. Mentre, per quanto riguarda la fascia interna fino alla ferrovia (che è quella che ci riguarda personalmente), sarà consegnato il solo bidone grigio, sempre da 30 litri (!) dei rifiuti indifferenziati.
The tourist area, in fact, has been divided into two zones parallel to the coast, where the doorstep collection will take place in different ways. In the range closer to the sea (practically all the buildings of households that face on the seafront) will be delivered home to home, in residential units under stable for four apartments, two cans of 30 litres for the collection of glass and undifferentiated waste and two sacks for the collection of paper and light packaging. While, as regards the range until the inner rail (which is the one that affects us personally), will be delivered only the grey bin, always from 30 litres (!) for unsorted waste.

Vi lascio a questo punto riflettere sul mio stato d’animo conseguente…
La mia prima reazione voleva essere quella di alzarmi e andare via dalla sala, ma mi sono trattenuta perché volevo sentire i pareri degli altri presenti. E le reazioni non del tutto positive non sono tardate ad arrivare. Sono emersi tanti dubbi e perplessità sulle modalità, sugli orari, sulle multe, sulla fine che fanno i rifiuti. Gli argomenti non sono stati completamente sviscerati dai tecnici, che hanno risposto affermando comunque la bontà del servizio.

My first reaction would be to get up and go away from the hall, but I was detained because I wanted to hear the view points of others. And early reactions, not entirely positive, came. Many doubts and misgivings were revealed about the way how, schedules, fines, and the end of wastes. The arguments weren’t completely eviscerated by the technicians who responded by confirm, however, the quality of service.

Io, personalmente ho fatto il mio intervento chiedendo il perché ancora una volta, la cosa più trascurata in tutto questo sia la raccolta del rifiuto organico!
Ho raccontato ai tecnici che a casa facciamo da tempo ugualmente la raccolta dei rifiuti umidi portando il sacchetto biodegradabile carico (spesso col rischio che si rompa per strada) al di là della ferrovia, dove sono i bidoni marroni. Ho specificato che la quantità di organico che produciamo è nettamente superiore a quella delle altre frazioni di raccolta, come loro stessi hanno confermato nelle slide di presentazione (il 30% di tutto l’ammontare dei rifiuti), e che invece l’indifferenziato che in due produciamo ogni quindici giorni è di soli 8 litri di volume!
I, personally, did my speech by asking why again, the most overlooked in all this is the collection of organic waste!
I told the technicians that at home since a year we collect wet waste indeed, bringing load biodegradable bags (often at the risk that they break in the street) over and above the rail, where there are the brown bins. I specified that the amount of organic waste we produce is much higher that the other parts of the recycling, as they themselves have confirmed in presentation slides (30% of the amount of waste), and I said also that instead the undifferentiated waste we produce in two are only 8 litres of volume every two weeks!

Ci crederete che mi hanno un po’ guardato con stupore? Si capisce! E non ho avuto modo di raccontare loro quanto stia facendo per la riduzione dei rifiuti senza fare grandi sacrifici! Pensate che un signore mi ha obbiettato, erroneamente, che l’organico puzza, per esempio se si buttano gli scarti del pesce. E da esperienza so che non è affatto vero, perché tutti gli avanzi di cibo puzzano se si decompongono in assenza di ossigeno e quindi solo se si raccolgono in modo sbagliato! Ma era chiaro che non c’era modo di farglielo capire. Mi meraviglia che al giorno d’oggi ci siano ancora persone scettiche ad adottare stili di vita più consapevoli per non voler rinunciare alle loro cattive abitudini di sempre!
Do you believe that I was looked with amazement? It is easy to understand! And I did not have the time to tell them how much we’re doing to reduce waste without great sacrifices! Think that a gentleman reproached me, erroneously, that the organic waste smells, for example if you throw scraps of fish. And from experience I know that is not true, because all the leftovers of food smell if they decompose in the absence of oxygen, and then only if you collect in a wrong way! But it was clear that there was no way to make him understand. I wonder today there are still sceptical people who don’t adopt conscious lifestyles because they don’t want to give up their bad habits forever!

Insomma, ho espresso ai presenti tutta la mia preoccupazione: consegnando alle famiglie il solo bidone da 30 litri per la raccolta domiciliare dell’indifferenziato, e venendolo a prelevare tutti i giorni, non si fa altro che disincentivare la raccolta differenziata e si dà, al contrario, la possibilità di buttare più rifiuti che andranno in discarica o inceneritore, invece di avviare la gente a fare meno rifiuti! Ditemi se ho torto!
In short, I expressed to presents all my concern to delivering the families only the 30-litres bin for the collection of unrecycled waste which they’ll draw every day. It discourages the recycling and gives, on the contrary, the possibility of throwing more waste that will go to landfill or incinerator, rather than involving people to make less waste! Tell me if I’m wrong!

Il dibattito acceso si è concluso con l’idea generale che quanto sarà fatto non debba essere un qualcosa di definitivo e io me lo auguro vivamente! Questi incontri con la cittadinanza volevano essere un motivo di confronto, di reciproci suggerimenti. Anche se ho apprezzato enormemente lo sforzo di ascoltare i cittadini da parte delle istituzioni, ho paura che d’ora in poi si farà un passo indietro. E se a questo punto non ci saranno dati gli strumenti per permettere a tutti di riciclare bene i rifiuti, allora ci resta solo la riduzione, se vogliamo raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati dalla legge.
The debate ended with the general idea that what will be done doesn’t have to be something final and I hope it very much! These meetings with citizens wanted to be a ground for comparison, of mutual suggestions. Although I greatly appreciated the effort to listen to the people by the institutions, but I fear that from now onwards we will do a step backwards. And if the tools to enable everyone to well recycle the waste wouldn’t still be given, then waste reduction only remains, if we want to achieve the aims set by law.

Quindi rimbocchiamoci tutti le maniche e lavoriamo per mettere a dieta i nostri bidoni, ridurre i rifiuti e riciclare quanto più possiamo e nei modi, ahinoi, disponibili!

La prima bellissima sorpresa che mi è capitato di scoprire all’inizio di questa settimana è stato il favoloso premio ricevuto dalla cara amica Almost Mrs. Average del blog The Rubbish Diet!!!
Non una delle solite catene di bloggers che si premiano a vicenda (anche quelle sono sempre gradite!), ma un premio esclusivo, che lei stessa ha ideato per ringraziare quanti l’hanno incoraggiata nel giro di un anno, nella sua sfida di riduzione dei rifiuti e per premiare gli sforzi di quanti hanno preso a cuore il problema rifiuti, trasformando il proprio stile di vita.
Bene, io sono stata nominata e selezionata nella categoria Eurovision Award, a pari merito con la nostra amica comune slovena Layla (di cui parlerò a breve) ed Esther dalla Francia.
Sono stata onoratissima di ricevere questo premio, come tanti altri blogger e autori di siti che hanno ricevuto il riconoscimento in ben 23 categorie! Davvero impressionante!
Notevole è stato lo sforzo che Mrs. A. ha fatto per seguire tutti i suoi lettori, nelle loro domande, richieste di aiuto, incoraggiamenti e frustrazioni… lei è ormai a tutti gli effetti una vera diva della scena inglese, ma non della TV o del cinema, bensì una star del mondo vero, di quelle che brillano per la sua straordinaria vitalità, creatività, sincerità e sensibilità. I complimenti vanno a lei!
The first nice surprise that happened to me was on the beginning of this week to discover the fabulous prize received from the dear friend Almost Mrs. Average of The Rubbish Diet blog!!!
Not one of the usual chains of bloggers who reward each other (even those are always welcome!), but an exclusive prize, which she has devised to thank those who have encouraged her within a year, in its challenge of reducing waste and to reward the efforts of those who have taken to heart the waste problem, changing their lifestyle.
Well, I was nominated and selected in the category Eurovision Award, equally to our common Slovenian friend Layla (I will talk soon of her) and Esther from France.
I was very honoured to receive this award, like many other bloggers and authors of sites that have received recognition in 23 categories! Really awesome!
Remarkable was the effort that Mrs. A. has for following all its readers, in their questions, requests for help, encouragement and frustrations... she is now really a true diva of the British scene, but no for TV or movies, but a true star in the real world, who shines for her extraordinary vitality, creativity, sincerity and sensitivity. The compliments are for her!

Andando a ritroso, domenica scorsa, io e Irish abbiamo potuto finalmente godere dell’ottima compagnia del gruppo GAR (Guide Appennino Romagnolo) di Rimini, in una bellissima uscita sulle colline dell’entroterra, intorno alla zona di San Marino. È stata un’esperienza particolare e meravigliosa nel vero senso della parola.
Sotto un timido sole di inizio primavera, con lo sfondo della Carpegna imbiancata dalle ultime nevi, abbiamo conosciuto, grazie all’aiuto di un esperto, quasi una decina di varietà di erbe di campo e radici commestibili: ‘scarpigni’, ‘barbe di becco’, porri selvatici, ‘senape bianca’, ‘orecchie di lepre’, topinambur ed altre specie. Le abbiamo cercate in posti conosciuti come non contaminati, individuandone la forma e la superficie delle foglie, dello stelo, ed eventuali infiorescenze, in modo da non confonderle eventualmente con piante simili ma tossiche. Abbiamo imparato a capire più o meno dove si trovano, e le abbiamo raccolte cercando di lasciarne per non comprometterne la ricrescita.
In seguito abbiamo potuto testarne il sapore e la ricchezza di vitamine e altre proprietà, dopo averle cucinate nella sede dell’associazione. È stato istruttivo ma soprattutto divertente per la presenza dell’allegra compagnia che ci ha regalato risate e addirittura musica verso la fine della serata, grazie alle abilità di un bravissimo cultore della fisarmonica!
Alla fine ci è restata nel cuore tanta gioia di conoscere queste straordinarie persone e allo stesso tempo di far parte di una natura che dà risorse, sostentamento e cure, e noi che spesso la maltrattiamo…
Alla prossima uscita col gruppo GAR! Non vediamo l’ora!
Going back, last Sunday, Irish and me could finally enjoy the excellent company of the GAR group (Guide Appennino Romagnolo) in Rimini, in a walk on the beautiful hills around the area of San Marino. It was a special and wonderful experience in the truest sense of the word.
Under a shy sun of early spring, with the background of white Carpegna for the last snow, we knew, with the aid of an expert, almost a dozens of varieties of edible field herbs and roots: ‘sonchus oleraceus L’, ‘tragopogon pratensis L’, wild leeks, ‘sinapis alba L’, ‘plantago lanceolata’, Jerusalem artichokes and other species. We were looking for them in places known as not contaminated, identifying the shape and surface of the leaves, stems, and any inflorescences so as to not possibly confuse them with similar but toxic plant. We learned to understand more or less where they are, and we picked them trying to leave enough for not affecting the regrowth.
Later we were able to test the taste and richness in vitamins and other properties, after having cooked the herbs in the headquarters of the association. It was instructive but especially funny for the presence of the happy company that gave us laughter and even music, in the end of the evening, thanks to the skills of an expert of the accordion!
In the end, what remained in the heart was so much for knowing these extraordinary people and at the same time to be part of a nature that gives resources, livelihood and care, the same we often mistreated.
We’ll look forward to the next adventure with the GAR group!

Ancora indietro. Volevate sapere com’è andata a finire l’avventura dei ravanelli? Benissimo direi!
Come avevo già accennato nei commenti, e come potete vedere dalle foto la ricetta della zuppa di Mrs. Green ha avuto la meglio. Ho cotto in anticipo le numerose e tenere foglie dei ravanelli (due mazzi) come se fossero spinaci, successivamente ho cotto 200 grammi di ceci biologici (secchi e poi messi ad ammollo per 12 ore) nella pentola a pressione (per risparmiare energia e tempo) con burro, alloro, aglio ed erba cipollina. Ho aggiunto dei tocchetti di patate (due belle grandi), le foglie cotte dei ravanelli, acqua e dado vegetale biologico (da barattolo in vetro). Il tocco finale è stata una bella mantecata di parmigiano. In quasi un’ora di cottura totale un’ottima zuppa per 4 porzioni! Niente male per un qualcosa che doveva finire nella spazzatura! Grazie ancora a tutti per i suggerimenti: mi avete ispirato per i prossimi esperimenti in cucina!
Still behind. Do you wanted to know what was the end of the adventure of radishes? Very well I say!
As I mentioned in the comments, and as you can see from the photos, the recipe of Mrs. Green’s soup had the best. I cooked in advance the amount of radishes leaves (two bunchs) like spinach, then I cooked 200 grams of organic chickpeas (dry and then put to soak for 12 hours) in pressure cooker (to save energy and time) with butter, bay leaves, garlic and chives. I added pieces of potato (two beautiful large), the leaves of cooked radishes, water and a nut of organic spices to flavour. The final touch was a good addition of parmesan. In almost an hour of cooking in total a tasty soup was ready for 4 servings! Not bad for something that had to end in the trash! Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions, I have inspiration for next experiment in the kitchen!

E infine arriviamo ai lavori in giardino cominciati due sabati fa. C’era un bellissimo sole e la terra del giardino, avanti casa stentava a riceverne i benefici. Le troppe piogge invernali avevano reso impermeabile lo strato superiore della terra che così si è spaccato e ha impedito la crescita di qualsiasi filo d’erba. Così Irish si è messo di buona lena a rivangare tutto il terreno, estirpando dei piccoli cespugli che da anni non assolvevano più alla loro funzione di siepe. Al loro posto dovremo piantare dei gelsomini. Io ho fatto a pezzi gran parte dei rami e delle radici delle piante scartate, per andarle a depositare nella compostiera. Due lavoracci, il primo faticoso per la schiena, il secondo per la mia mano che alla fine della giornata era stressata! Però ne è valsa la pena. Fra poco pianteremo la dicondra, un’erba che non ha necessità di essere tagliata e che era stata già piantata e resiste ancora in alcuni angoli del giardino.
Precedentemente mi è stato chiesto come va il compostaggio. Bene! O almeno sembra… lo strato inferiore è maturo e profuma di sottobosco, quello superiore è meno decomposto e ogni tanto ha bisogno di essere ricoperto con un po’ di compost che si trova sotto, perché tende alla formazione di moscerini. Il punto però negativo è che questa primavera non potremo ancora usare il compost, perché il cumulo è ancora poco e il processo è più lento di quello che credevamo. Questa volta ho dovuto innaffiare il cumulo perché gli scarti del giardino hanno formato uno strato troppo secco in superficie. Ecco le foto.
And finally we started to work in the garden, two Saturdays ago. There was a beautiful sun and the earth of the garden below the house was slow to receive the benefits. The winter rains had too many proofed as the top layer of the earth so that it is split and prevented the growth of every blade of grass. So Irish got a good work poking around the ground, uprooting small bushes that in the years no longer served the function of hedge. In their place we will plant the jasmine. I cut to piece most of the branches and roots of the plants chosen, and to go to deposit them in the compost bin. Two not so pleasant jobs, the first tiring for the back, the second for my hand that at the end of the day was stressed! But it was worth it. Soon we plants dicondra, a herb that does not need to be cut and which had been already planted and still endures in some corners of the garden.
Previously I was asked how composting proceeds. Well! Or at least it seems... lower layer is mature and smells of undergrowth, the upper is not decomposed and occasionally needs to be covered with a few of compost that is under, because it tends to the formation of midges. The negative point however is that this spring we cannot even use the compost, because the amount is still little and process is slower than we thought. This time I had to water the cumulation because the garden waste have been formed a too dry layer in surface. Here are the photos.

Post ospite / Guest post – FA’ LA COSA GIUSTA! 2009

Oggi sono particolarmente felice perché è la prima volta che ospito l’intervento di un carissimo lettore del blog, Riccardo, che commenta spesso via mail e mi tiene sempre aggiornata sulle novità in tema ambientale. Infatti, Riccardo è un esperto in materia di risparmio energetico e risorse rinnovabili e gestisce il sito web Wutel.net, un pozzo di informazioni per chi vuole intraprendere le buone pratiche di risparmio e per chi invece vuole studiare alcuni aspetti della materia in maniera tecnicamente più approfondita.

Ero stata da lui invitata a partecipare alla fiera milanese Fa’ la cosa giusta! che si è tenuta dal 15 al 13 marzo. Ho dovuto, purtroppo, rifiutare il suo invito per la distanza e per i miei impegni, ma devo ammettere che un po’ mi sono pentita per non essermi organizzata in anticipo. La fiera sembra aver raggiunto una grande popolarità, e, rispetto anche alla fiera riminese Ecomondo, è sicuramente più aperta al pubblico dei non-del-settore, tanto da richiamare persone di tutte le età…

Per chi non la conoscesse ancora, la rassegna tratta di consumo critico e sostenibilità spaziando in vari settori. “Mobilità sostenibile, editoria e promozione culturale, agricoltura biologica, software libero, moda critica, bio-edilizia, fibre naturali, economia carceraria, eco-prodotti, commercio equo e solidale, terzo settore, energie rinnovabili finanza etica, turismo solidale: queste le sezioni di Fa’ la cosa giusta! Che hanno ospitato oltre 500 espositori nei 21mila mq di FieraMilanoCity” (da comunicato stampa del 15/03/09).

Sentiamo, quindi, le impressioni di Riccardo:

“Anche quest’anno pensavo di fare soltanto il visitatore della fiera, poi invece sono stato inaspettatamente invitato presso lo stand del ‘Il portale del sole’ per dare una mano nel fornire informazioni ai numerosissimi visitatori sugli impianti fotovoltaici (soprattutto quelli alla portata di
tutti), sul risparmio energetico e sull'illuminazione a led.

…mi ero portato dietro alcune schede informative sull’argomento relative ai progetti proposti nell’ambito delle iniziative ‘Solar Energy Way’ del gruppo Wutel.net che sono subito andate a ruba.
Infatti per il secondo e terzo giorno della fiera ho stampato (rigorosamente su carta riciclata al 100%) ed in tutta fretta ben 400 opuscoli informativi che sono stati letteralmente presi d’assalto…

Mi ha fatto veramente piacere vedere che moltissimi giovani e nuove famiglie sono veramente interessate a poter far qualcosa di concreto per l’ambiente e per uno stile di vita sostenibile e migliore.

La fiera ovviamente non era soltanto dedicata alle energie rinnovabili ma spaziava veramente su tutto il mondo eco/bio e sul volontariato in tutte le sue forme e campi.

Anche gli organizzatori non si aspettavano questo afflusso così notevole di pubblico che quest’anno ha raggiunto la ragguardevole cifra di 50.000 visitatori…

Per concludere posso affermare di aver visto finalmente che molta gente (seriamente preoccupata per le conseguenze a cui andremo incontro se continuiamo così sulla via dello spreco e del consumo eccessivo) è pronta a far qualcosa da subito e concretamente per invertire questa situazione.
Inoltre molti giovani erano alla ricerca di informazioni chiare e semplici (anche soprattutto relative a progetti realizzabili praticamente ed alla portata di tutti) su come poter agire per ridurre realmente i consumi e per produrre energia da fonti pulite e rinnovabili che, non sempre, hanno detto di aver trovato negli enti/istituzioni preposti ad informare il cittadino.

È stata quindi una bella ed interessante esperienza che spero di poter ripetere il prossimo anno ed in altre manifestazioni del genere.
Oggi sono ancora senza voce ma molto soddisfatto… :-)”

Ottimo lavoro! Ringrazio Riccardo per essere stato così gentile ed averci messo a disposizione le informazioni sulla fiera e tanto altro materiale. Ce ne sono ancora poche di persone così attente e disponibili, però qualcosa sta cambiando!

Today I am particularly happy because this is the first time I host the intervention of a dear reader of the blog, Riccardo, who often commented via email and always keeps me updated on news on environment. Indeed, Riccardo is an expert in energy saving and renewable resources and manages the website Wutel.net, a well of information for who wants to take the best practices for saving and those who want to study some aspects of the matter in a technically more accurate analysis.

I had been invited by him to attend the fair in Milan Fa’ La Cosa Giusta (Do The Right Thing!)! which was held on March 15-13. Unfortunately, I refuse his invitation for the distance and for my schedule, but I must admit that I was a bit sorry for not having planned the visit in advance. The fair seems to have achieved great popularity, and compared to the fair of Rimini, Ecomondo, it’s certainly more open to the public non-in-the-sector, as to draw people from all ages...

For those who do not know it yet, the exhibition comes spacing to critical consumption and sustainability in various sectors. “Sustainable mobility, publishing and promotion of culture, organic agriculture, free software, critic fashion, bio-construction, natural fibres, economy from prisons, eco-products, fair trade, third sector, renewable energy, ethic finance, solidarity in tourism: these the sections of Fa’ La cosa Giusta! that hosted over 500 exhibitors in 21thousand sqm at FieraMilanoCity” (from press release dated 15/03/09).

Let’s listen, therefore, to the impressions of Riccardo:

“Even this year I thought to make only the fair as a visitor, then, instead I was unexpectedly invited to the stand of the ‘Gateway of the Sun’ to lend a hand in provide information to the many visitors on the photovoltaic plants (especially those within the reach of all), on saving energy and LED lighting.

...I brought back some information sheets on of proposed projects under the initiatives of ‘Solar Energy Way’ from the Wutel.net group that were gone stolen.
In fact, for the second and third day of the fair, I printed (strictly on 100% recycled paper), and in haste, 400 information leaflets that have been taken literally on assault...

I was really pleased to see that many young people and new families are really concerned to be able to do something concrete for the environment and a sustainable and better lifestyle.

The fair was of course not only devoted to renewable energy but truly ranged throughout the world eco/bio and on volunteering in all its forms and fields.

Even the organizers did not expect this influx as considerable public that this year has reached the remarkable figure of 50,000 visitors...

To conclude I can say that I have finally seen that many people (seriously concerned about the consequences of continuing on the path of wasteful and excessive consumption) are ready to do something immediately and specifically to reverse this situation.
Moreover, many young people were looking for clear and simple information (also especially for feasible projects, practically available to everyone) on how to act to reduce consumption really and to generate energy from clean and renewable sources, that not always they said to found in bodies/institutions responsible for informing the citizen.

It’s been a nice and interesting experience which I hope to be able to repeat next year and in other events of the sort.
Today I am still without a voice ... but very happy :-)”

St. Patrick's Day + Eirene 2009 + Friends all-in-one

Beh, innanzitutto comincio il post con un felice San Patrizio a tutti quelli che amano la verde terra irlandese. Forse vi è sfuggito che io e IrishP. siamo da tempo rimasti folgorati dalla bellezza selvaggia di questa terra, dalle sue tradizioni e dalla sua cultura. In realtà siamo appassionati della cultura, della storia, della musica e finanche degli sport dei paesi anglosassoni… forse siamo nati nel Paese sbagliato, eh eh!
Per festeggiare questa data, stasera parteciperemo a una gustosa cena dai sapori irlandesi e ascolteremo tanta buona musica e brinderemo a tutti voi che ci seguite appassionatamente!
Well, first I start the post with a happy St. Patrick's Day for all those who love the green of Ireland. Perhaps it wasn’t clear that Irish and me were long struck by the wild beauty of this land, its traditions and its culture. In reality we are passionate about culture, history, music and even the sports of English-speaking countries ... maybe we were born in the wrong country, he he!
To celebrate this date, this evening we’re attending a tasty flavours Irish dinner and listening to good music and we toast to all of you who passionately follow us!


Nel frattempo, come spesso succede dopo periodi di mancanza di ispirazione, si sono accumulati eventi da raccontare e post da scrivere. Adesso, spero di riuscire ad avere il tempo sufficiente per concentrarmi sul blog, anche se mi lascio facilmente prendere da quello che scrivono i miei amici blogger, finendo col dedicare più tempo alla lettura e ai commenti. E poi non manca il lavoro, eh!
Meanwhile, as it often happens after periods of lack of inspiration, I accumulated events to tell and posts to write. Now, I hope to be able to have the sufficient time to focus on the blog, even if I was easily taken by what my blogger friends write, ended up devoting more time to reading and commenting. And don’t miss the job, he!

Torno indietro, allora, di qualche giorno fa, con precisione a venerdì scorso, quando abbiamo avuto una serata molto particolare, partecipando a Eirene 2009, come preannunciato in uno dei precedenti post. Questo incontro si è tenuto a Santarcangelo di Romagna, un affascinante borgo nell’entroterra riminese, la qual cosa ci è servita anche come scusa per poter fare due passi. Ospiti della conferenza Paolo Ermani, presidente dell’associazione PAEA (Progetti Alternativi Energia e Ambiente), e Salvatore Frigerio, monaco camaldolese dell’eremo di Monte Giove, in territorio marchigiano. Avrebbe dovuto esserci anche Marinella Correggia, ma l’appuntamento con lei è slittato per il prossimo venerdì, a Poggio Berni, nell’ambito della stessa manifestazione.
I back then, a few days ago, exactly on last Friday, when we had a very special evening, participating in Eirene 2009, as announced in one of the previous post. This meeting was held in Santarcangelo di Romagna, a charming village inland Rimini, so it was taken as an excuse to make two steps. Guests of the conference Paolo Ermani, president of PAEA (Alternative Energy and Environment Projects), and Salvatore Frigerio, monk of the Order of Camaldoli, from the hermitage of Monte Giove, in the Marches area. Marinella Correggia would also be there, but the appointment with her slipped on next Friday in Poggio Berni, within the same event.

La grande sorpresa è stata proprio sentir parlare un religioso di sostenibilità ambientale. Il suo discorso ha avuto come tema principale “Salvaguardare l’ambiente come creazione divina”. Ed infatti, Salvatore Frigerio è partito dalla lettura approfondita di alcuni passi noti della Sacra Bibbia, come il capitolo della Genesi, per chiarire alcuni concetti che il tempo e la storia hanno offuscato e rendendoli sorprendentemente molto più attuali.
Nelle parole citate, prendendo a riferimento il testo originale in ebraico, anziché le traduzioni più recenti, il Creatore è rappresentato come la forza che concentra in sé tutte le energie, una bellissima immagine considerando che l’energia è qualcosa che ci permette di vivere su questa Terra. L’Eden è il giardino “consegnato” che non è quello che noi conosciamo come “paradiso terrestre”, ma un “giardino nel giardino”, un “giardino di piacere”, ricco di ogni bene dove non c’è una netta separazione tra bene e male e Javeh è il figlio della Terra Madre.
Ancora più bello è sapere che il vero termine utilizzato nelle scritture è “servire” in luogo del conosciuto “dominare”, per cui l’uomo non è dominatore della Terra, ma servitore! Dovrebbe quindi servire le altre forme di vita, percorrere la Terra! L’uomo non è quindi il padrone della Creazione e l’idea di un Dio cattivo, che punisce, è sbagliata perché Lui ha creato la vita e l’ha consegnata all’uomo perché potesse “preservarla”, coltivarla oltre che proteggerla.
Esiste una frase che dice “Non attiratevi la rovina con le opere delle vostre mani”. È quindi l’uomo, che con la sua indifferenza causa la distruzione della Terra, riportandovi il caos. Sono le nostre scelte che causano disastri.
La speranza sta nell’agire in un’opera costruttiva: solo la conoscenza e la condivisione possono riportare l’uomo al rapporto reale con i suoi simili e alla salvaguardia del giardino che ci viene quotidianamente “consegnato”.
Un bellissimo messaggio che ci ha lasciato a bocca aperta!
The big surprise was to hear about environmental sustainability by a religious. His speech had as its main theme ‘Safeguarding the environment as a divine creation’. And indeed, Salvatore Frigerio began by deeply reading some known passages of the Holy Bible as the chapter of Genesis, to clarify some concepts that time and history have obscured, making them surprisingly much more current.
In the quoted words, with reference to the original text in Hebrew, instead of the more recent translations, the Creator is represented as the force that concentrates in itself all the energies, a beautiful image whereas energy is something that allows us to live on this Earth. The Eden is the ‘consigned’ garden that is not what we know as ‘Paradise’ but a ‘garden in the garden’, a ‘garden of pleasure’, full of all goods where there is no clear separation between good and evil and Javeh is the son of Earth Mother.
Even more beautiful is knowing that the actual term used in records is ‘to serve’ in place of the known ‘to master’ to which man is not ruler of the Earth, but a servant! Then he should serve the other forms of life, ‘walk’ the Earth! Therefore man is not the lord of Creation and the idea of a evil God, who punishes, it is wrong because he has created life and delivered it to us, so that we could ‘preserve’, cultivate as well as protect it.
There is a phrase that says ‘Do not attract ruin with the works of your hands’. Therefore the man is who with his indifference cause the destruction of the Earth, bringing it to the chaos. Even our choices cause disasters.
The hope lies in acting in a constructive way: only knowledge and sharing can bring the man to real relationships with his fellows and to the ‘protection of garden’ that every day is ‘consigned’ to us.
A beautiful message that left us open-mouthed!

Abbiamo già conosciuto Paolo Ermani nella scorsa edizione di Rifiuto, Riduco e Riciclo, dove aveva illustrato l’attività della PAEA l’associazione che presiede. Attualmente vive a Grosseto ma ha vissuto tanti anni in Germania, dove ha saputo cogliere l’opportunità di compiere degli studi specifici sulle fonti di energia alternativa, per farne quasi una scelta di vita.
È stato interessante riascoltarlo con tantissimi nuovi argomenti da sviscerare.
Partendo dall’assunto che questo periodo è vissuto in maniera totalmente negativa, con la crisi economica che fa da sfondo ai nostri giorni, Paolo Ernani, ha voluto vederci meglio, spingendoci a ripercorrere con lui le principali notizie apparse sui quotidiani più noti. Questo, per portarci a capire che la crisi economica, la decrescita del PIL, non dev’essere fonte di preoccupazione ma punto di partenza per creare lo sviluppo di un mondo basato sulle reali necessità!
La crisi attuale è crisi dello spreco, del superfluo: il 2% del PIL finisce nella pattumiera, (sono circa 6000 euro l’anno per famiglia, considerato non solo quello che viene buttato nella spazzatura, ma quello che viene invenduto, quello che è in scadenza e viene scartato nella vendita).
La disoccupazione giova alla crescita di un’occupazione in settori più sostenibili. Troppa gente ha lavorato finora in settori che hanno prodotto beni inutili e distruttivi per il nostro pianeta. È quindi il buonsenso che deve entrare a far parte anche del mondo del lavoro.
Siamo noi stessi che dobbiamo cominciare a cambiare le cose: abbiamo un grandissimo potere economico perché abbiamo la facoltà di scegliere, siamo consumatori. Inoltre bisogna ricreare il senso della comunità e della cooperazione.
Bisogna ridare vita alla creatività, alla manualità, cominciando dai bambini, ai quali oggi è dato tutto ma è negata l’educazione al “saper fare”.
We already knew Paolo Ermani in the last edition of Rifiuto, Riduco e Riciclo, where he outlined the activities of PAEA of which he is the chairman. Currently he lives in Grosseto but lived many years in Germany, where he seized the opportunity to perform specific studies on alternative sources of energy, almost making a choice of life.
It was interesting to listen to lots of new examined arguments.
Starting from this period in which we live in a completely negative way with the economic crisis that is the background to nowadays, Paolo Ernani, wanted to see better, impelling us to run with him the top stories appeared in well known newspapers. This, to make us understand that the economic crisis, the decline of GDP, hasn’t to be a source of concern but a starting point to create the development of a world based on real needs!
The current crisis is the crisis of waste, of unnecessary: the 2% of GDP goes into the dustbin, (about 6000 euros per year for family, considered not only what is thrown in rubbish, but what is unsold, what is expires and discarded in the sale).
Unemployment benefits to the growth of employment in more sustainable areas. Too many people have worked so far in areas that have produced unnecessary goods, destructive for our planet. Common sense therefore has to become also part of the workforce.
We must begin ourselves to change things: we have an enormous economic power, because we are able to choose, we are consumers. Let’s recreate a sense of community and cooperation.
We must revive the creativity, manual dexterity, starting with the children, which today all is given but education to ‘know how’ denied.


L’intervento di Paolo Ermani si è completato nell’inaugurazione della mostra di PAEA: una sezione è incentrata sul risparmio energetico e sulle energie rinnovabili, mentre un’altra sull’alimentazione naturale ed ecologica. Molto ben organizzata, la prima espone esempi concreti di risparmio, rappresentati in modelli in scala e a grandezza reale e ci ha dato la possibilità di recuperare molte informazioni (che noi andremo a studiare bene, visti i lavori che andremo a compiere fra poco in casa). Abbiamo avuto modo di vedere da vicino sezioni di pannelli solari, materiali isolanti, tecniche alternative di riscaldamento e di illuminazione, il tutto ben illustrato da pannelli informativi. La parte dedicata all’alimentazione naturale ed ecologica ci ha incuriositi oltremodo, visto che sono state esposte non solo le tecniche alternative di cottura, come i forni solari, ma anche tecniche ormai dimenticate, come la macinazione della farina, la lavorazione del pane, la preparazione in casa di conserve, facendo una carrellata sul consumo consapevole, sugli alimenti dimenticati e sui prodotti che aiutano ad adottare uno stile di vita più coscienzioso.
The intervention of Paolo Ermani has completed the inauguration of the exhibition of PAEA: a section focuses on savings energy and renewable energies, while another about natural and ecological food. Well organized, the first sets out concrete examples of cost savings, represented in scale and real models, and we took the opportunity to recover a lot of information (which we’re going to study well, given the work we're going to make shortly in the house). We got to see up close sections of solar panels, insulation materials, technical alternative of heating and lighting, all well illustrated by informative panels. The section on for natural and ecological food made us more curious, since they exposed not only the technical of alternative cooking, such as solar ovens, but also technical now forgotten, like the grinding of the flour, the production of bread, the preparation of homemade preserves, having a look at consumption, food forgotten and products that help to adopt a more conscientious life style.


È stato qui che con mia grande sorpresa ho incontrato nuovamente la mitica Alessia di ManiTese, col suo compagno, con i quali abbiamo intrattenuto diverse chiacchiere utili e piacevoli, rovistando tra i banchi della mostra. È stato quasi un segno del destino perché mi ha fatto capire di non essere poi così sola… che bello poter condividere le proprie idee! Come si dice… l’unione fa la forza! :)
It was here that, with my great surprise, I met the fabulous Alessia of ManiTese, with his companion, with which we have had several useful and enjoyable chats rummaging among the stalls of the exhibition. It was almost a sign of fate that made me realize not to be so alone... nice to share our ideas!

Aiuto: problema sprechi in cucina! / Help: a food waste problem!

Post molto breve per chiedere un piccolo aiuto a voi lettori! 
Sapete che evitare gli sprechi in cucina fa parte della filosofia Zero Rifiuti? 

Oggi, forse come ricompensa del nostro aiuto per un suo problema di salute, la zia di Irish ci recapita a casa due grossi mazzetti di ravanelli che vengono da un produttore a due passi da qui!
Non siamo grandi consumatori di ravanelli e oltre che in insalata non sappiamo come consumarli... e poi hanno delle belle foglie verdi che fanno gran volume e mi dispiacerebbe buttare, anche se in compostiera!


Ho sentito che nel nord Europa coi ravanelli si fanno altre cose prelibate come zuppe. 
Su internet ho trovato solo un blog che presenta lo stesso mio quesito e una ricetta dalla Francia. 
Però, visto che tra voi ci sono alcune lettrici anche blogger che sono veramente brave in cucina, mi aspetto qualche suggerimento di qualche ricetta prelibata... 

Allora mi aiutate ad evitare un'enorme montagna di spazzatura verde?

Do you know that to avoid wastage in the kitchen is part of Zero Waste philosophy?

Today, perhaps as a reward for our help in a health problem, the aunt of Irish delivered at our home two large bunches of radishes that come from a farmer very near to us!
We are not big consumers of radishes and except that in salad we don't know how to consume them... and then they have beautiful green leaves that make a great volume and I regret to throw them, although in composter!

I heard that in northern Europe, with radishes, they cook other delicious meals as soups.
On the Internet I found a blog with the same question and a recipe from France.
However, because of you readers there are also some friends and bloggers, among you, who are really fine cookers, I expect some suggestions of delicious recipes...

So would you help me to avoid a mountain of green rubbish, please?

RIFIUTILE, Rimini, Aprile/Marzo 2009

Marzo sembra essere non solo il mese del risveglio della natura, ma anche quello del risveglio delle iniziative attente alla sua salvaguardia!
March seems to be not only the nature awakening month, but also the month in which there are lots of happenings about environment saving!

Oggi, presso la Sede Provinciale di Rimini, in piazzale Bornaccini, 1, si inaugura Rifiutile, “Laboratorio per donne con recupero materiali”.
Si tratta di un’intelligente rassegna di incontri per “Creare divertendosi, utilizzando oggetti che diversamente sarebbero spazzatura!”.
Today, at the Province Centre of Rimini, in Bornaccini Square n.1, there will be the inauguration of Rifiutile, “Women laboratory of art from waste recovery”.
It’s a smart occurrence of meetings for “Enjoying creativity, using objects that differently would be trash!”.

Sono 9 incontri che si terranno il lunedì, il mercoledì e il venerdì nella seconda e quarta settimana di marzo e nella terza di aprile, nell’orario dalle 14,30 alle 17,30. In particolare:

• il 9, 11 e 13 marzo si terrà un laboratorio di scultura, giochi per bambini e idee libere;
• il 23, 25 e 27 marzo si lavorerà alla creazione di arredamento, lampade, soprammobili, mensole, sedie, specchi e posacenere;
• il 20, 22 e 24 aprile si creeranno costumi, abiti, gioielli e accessori.

There will be 9 dates that occur on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the second and fourth weeks of March and in the third one of April. In particular:

• On 9, 11 and 13 March there will be a laboratory for sculpture, kid’s toys and free ideas;
• On 29, 25 and 27 March the focus is on creation of furniture, lamps, ornaments, consoles, chairs, mirrors and ashtrays;
• On 20, 22 and 24 April, you’ll can create costumes, clothes, jewellery and accessories.

La rassegna è organizzata dalla Mutoid Waste Company, un “gruppo di riciclatori capaci di riutilizzare i rifiuti urbani trasformandoli da rottami in opere d’arte”. I materiali utilizzati, sono i più vari: ferro, plastica, gomma, fibra di vetro, alluminio, rame ed ottone. “Un costante flusso di mutazione accompagna non solo l’ideazione ma la raccolta stessa dei materiali, la tecnica di lavorazione e l’attuazione fino alla rifinitura degli oggetti”.
The event is organized by Mutoid Waste Company : “a group of recyclers able to reuse urban trash turning them from scraps to art”. Lots of material can be used: iron, plastic, rubber, glass fibre, aluminium, copper and brass. “A continue flow of mutation is the complement of the ideation and recovering of material itself, as long as the realization and the finishing of objects”.

Un po’ di WALL•E in tutti noi non guasterebbe! / A little bit of WALL•E in all of us wouldn’t go amiss!

Non sono una di quelle persone che si commuovono facilmente quando guardano un film, eppure, fin dall’inizio, ogni qual volta ho assistito ai trailer di questo fantastico film che è WALL•E, una stretta al cuore ed un nodo in gola mi hanno preso irrimediabilmente.

Strano commuoversi per un robottino, egregiamente disegnato e animato in computer grafica!
I am not one of those people who move to tears easily watching a movie, yet, since from the beginning, every time I have seen the trailers of this fantastic movie WALL•E, heartache and a knot in my throat took me irreversibly.
It’s strange to move by a little robot, which is very well drawn and animated by computer graphics!
Ma gli autori, i disegnatori, i musicisti e gli animatori di questo film – che quest’anno ha vinto l’Oscar come migliore film d’animazione – hanno evidentemente superato se stessi.
E mentre dal trailer s’intuiva la bellissima storia d’amore tra WALL•E ed EVE e lo sfondo di un mondo profondamente segnato e trasformato dall’uomo, guardando il film si vive tutta la coinvolgente storia con un profondo e strano senso di appartenenza a quel futuro, con domande che ti bombardano la mente come: “ma arriveremo davvero a tanto?” e “ci aiuterà davvero la tecnologia?” e ancora “potremo, poi, veramente ripartire da zero?”…
But the authors, designers, musicians and animators of this movie – which this year won the Oscar for the best-animated film – have clearly exceeded themselves.
And while through the trailer you sense the beautiful love story between WALL•E and EVE and the background of a world deeply marked and transformed by man, looking at the movie you live throughout the enthralling story with a strange and deep sense of belonging to that future, with questions that bombard your mind like: “Shell we really reduce in that way?” and “Will really technology help us?” and “Could we really start then from scratch?”...
Ed anche i bambini – per i quali comunque, alla fine del film, risulta evidente che la pillola sia stata addolcita – guardandolo, avvertono un iniziale senso di disagio. In sala, tempo addietro, durante la proiezione, ero seduta accanto ad un bimbo di una coppia: dopo le risate assicurate dal corto “Presto”, quel bimbo ha cominciato sin dai primi minuti a fare domande ai propri genitori, i quali non sapendo evidentemente cosa rispondergli hanno cercato di zittirlo, poverino. Il bimbo dopo aver chiesto inutilmente di tornare a casa si è poi addormentato… Peccato! Occasione mancata per quei genitori di far nascere nel proprio figlio un po’ di amore e compassione per la Terra!
And even children – for which, however, at the end of the movie, it is clear that the pill has been sugared – watching the movie, feel an initial sense of discomfort. Time ago, during the screening, I was sitting next to a couple’s child: after laughter guaranteed by the short movie ‘Presto’, since the first few minutes that child started to ask questions to their parents, who obviously didn’t know what to say and tried to reduce him to silence, poor. The child after seeking in vain to return home fell asleep... what a pity! Missed opportunity for those parents to cause in their son love and compassion for the Earth!

Ma cos’ha di tanto sconvolgente questa storia? Io ci ho pensato e alla fine ho dedotto che è talmente fatta bene, talmente realistica che questa cosa ci disturba tremendamente. Ci disturba il fatto di vedere, attraverso un incredibile cannocchiale puntato al futuro, dove arriveremo accumulando cose inutili, gettando via tutto, abbandonando i nostri rifiuti e sperando che qualcuno risolverà per noi il problema.
But what of this story is so shocking? I thought and in the end I concluded that it is so well done, so realistic, that this disturbs us tremendously. We are disturbed watching, through a telescope pointed at the incredible future, at where we are arriving, accumulating unnecessary things, throwing it all away, leaving our waste and hoping that someone will solve the problem for us.

Così WALL•E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, ossia sollevatore terrestre di carichi di rifiuti), solo, nel suo mondo sconfinato di rifiuti, smuove una parte di noi che vive in questo mondo con occhi ingenui, pensando che gli oggetti di cui ci circondiamo siano innocui giochi. Eppure quella parte di noi diventa ad un certo punto consapevole e capisce il valore di quegli oggetti ai quali diamo sempre una vita così breve. Così un accendino ancora funzionante può accendere i nostri sogni, un foglio di pluribolle può diventare un simpatico passatempo, un coperchio diventare un copricapo divertente, una vecchia cassetta far rivivere emozioni dimenticate e un vecchio scarpone ospitare una piccola apparentemente insignificante forma di vita.
So WALL•E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class), alone, in his boundless world of waste, moves a part of us that lives in this world with naive eyes, thinking that the objects with which we surround are harmless games. Yet that part of us becomes utterly aware and understands the value of those objects that have always a so short life. So a still working lighter can turn our dreams on, a sheet of bubble wrap can be a pleasant pastime, a lid can be a funny hats, an old tape can revive forgotten emotions and an old boot can host a small seemingly insignificant life form.

Al di là della storia d’amore, commovente e a tratti ironica sui sentimenti e sulle differenze tra i due compagni d’avventura, aldilà del divertentissimo inseguirsi dei caratteristici personaggi della storia, aldilà di effetti sonori strabilianti e particolari visivi che rievocano i primi passi nella tecnologia e ci riportano al presente, aldilà di una colonna sonora molto intrigante, quello che emerge soprattutto è il messaggio principale che rende questa storia unica: il nostro pianeta Terra è uno solo e irriproducibile ed è necessario amarlo e proteggerlo a tutti i costi perché il suo futuro è il nostro e quello delle generazioni che verranno, e non è così lontano come sembra.
Beyond the love story, moving and sometimes ironic about feelings and differences between the two adventure partner, beyond the fun chase of the characteristic figures of history, beyond amazing sound effects and visual details that recall that the first steps in technology and back us to present, beyond a very intriguing soundtrack, what especially emerges is the main message that makes this history unique: our planet Earth is one and irreproducible and you must love and protect at all costs because it is our future and that one of coming generations, and it’s not so far as it seems.

Dentro di me c’è una parte di WALL•E che vive tutti i giorni cercando di recuperare quello che è possibile. Sono a volte ingenua e testarda quanto lui. Nelle tante scatole che conservo, ci sono oggetti che forse avranno un secondo uso… li accumulo e poi aspetto che qualcuno o qualcosa risvegli la mia immaginazione e mi dica cosa farne. Metto continuamente ordine alla mia vita, vorrei mettere ordine al mondo, ma da sola mi sembra un’impresa ardua e quasi impossibile. Per fortuna ho vicino la persona amata che condivide questo mio sentire. Magari insieme riusciremo anche noi in qualche impresa e poi per fortuna troveremo degli amici come i tanti scatenati amici di WALL•E, con i quali riusciremo a far tornare anche gli altri sulla strada giusta… la strada di ritorno verso la Terra!
Inside of me there is a bit of WALL•E, living all days trying to recover what is possible. I’m sometimes naive and stubborn as him. In many boxes I keep, there are items that may have a second use... I accumulate them and then wait something or someone awakening my imagination and telling me what to do wit them. I continually put order into my life, I would bring order to the world too, but by myself it seems to me so difficult and almost impossible. Fortunately I have closely my loved mate who shares my feelings. Perhaps together we succeed in any undertaking and then fortunately we’ll find friends like so many mad friends of WALL•E, with which we will return on the right road ... the road back to Earth!

Il sole all’orizzonte… / Sun on the horizon

Sapete quando volete fare una cosa, chiedendovi quando la farete e rimandate e rimandate senza fine, ma senza un preciso motivo? Bene, a me purtroppo accade così tanto spesso che oramai non ci faccio più caso. Una di queste cose si è finalmente sbloccata lo scorso sabato e ora vi racconto.
Do you know when you want to do something, asking yourself when and postponing and postponing it without end, but without a specific reason? Well, unfortunately, it happens to me so often that I don't notice it anymore. One of it was finally solved last Saturday and here's the story.

Vi avevo detto che io e il mio compagno vorremmo migliorare la casa dove abitiamo dal punto di vista energetico. Perciò ci domandavamo se sul nostro tetto si potessero mettere pannelli solari e fotovoltaici, se dovessimo cambiare la caldaia, gli infissi e isolare meglio i termosifoni, oppure acquistare addirittura una stufa per implementare il calore.
Insomma… belle domande! E quando sei nel limbo di pensieri, tutto si può fare ma c’è sempre una gran paura, quella di non poter sostenere tutte queste spese. Così il momento di dare risposta a questi quesiti non arriva mai, spinti dalla contingenza delle cose quotidiane. Così è successo a noi.
Fino a che abbiamo conosciuto delle persone che ci hanno messo a disposizione le loro conoscenze dirette riguardo a queste problematiche.
I told you that I and my partner would like to avoid energy waste in the house where we live. So we wonder if we woud have to put solar panels and photovoltaics on our roof or if we would have to change the boiler, the casements of windows and isolate better heating, or if would even buy a oven to implement the heat.
So puzzling questions! And when you're in the limbo of thoughts, everything can be done but there is always a great fear, that we can't support all these costs. So the time to give answers to these questions does never arrive, driven by the contingency of daily things. That was evident to us.
'Till the moment we know people who have made available their direct knowledge about to these issues.

Mi riferisco a persone come Marco che nel suo blog Consumo Meno parla in prima persona dei miglioramenti energetici apportati alla sua casa. La sua esperienza è esemplare ed è bello poter vivere con lui le gioie di ogni cambiamento apportato! I suoi consigli sono molto pratici e iniziano a tornare utili anche a noi in questo momento.
I am referring to people like Marco that in his blog Consumo Meno speaks in first person about energy improvements made to his house. His experience is exemplary and it is good to live with him the joys of any changes! His recommendations are very practical and useful to us to begin at this time.

Mi riferisco ai tecnici incontrati precedentemente durante l’incontro sulle energie alternative organizzato dal comune di Rimini.
I refer to the specialists previously known during the meeting on alternative energies organized by the municipality of Rimini.

E infine mi riferisco ad alcune recenti conoscenze che cominciano ad aiutarci da vicino a risolvere i nostri quesiti.
Sabato scorso abbiamo incontrato una di queste persone, un ottimo “bioconsulente” di un’affermata azienda italiana che si occupa di efficienza energetica degli edifici. È venuto a trovarci a casa e abbiamo trascorso il pomeriggio in una splendida e utile chiacchierata…
Dobbiamo dire di esserci trovati ad assistere ad una vera lezione di bioedilizia! Il nostro amico, partendo dalle varie problematiche ambientali relative al riscaldamento globale, passando alle normative italiane ed europee in merito alla certificazione energetica degli edifici e alle incentivazioni attuali per le opere di ottimizzazione del risparmio energetico, è arrivato ad illustrarci gli impianti di recente tecnologia per quanto riguarda il solare termico e il fotovoltaico, in tutte le tipologie, nonché le possibili tecniche di coibentazione degli edifici e di geotermia, mostrandoci numerosi esempi finora realizzati.
Ma la parte più interessante e sbalorditiva è arrivata quando abbiamo focalizzato l’attenzione sui consumi di questa casa. Abbiamo preso in considerazione le nostre bollette di gas ed elettricità di circa un anno di vita vissuta (non potevamo fare una stima più indietro, dal momento che è un anno e quattro mesi che abitiamo qui).
Finally I refer to some recent knowledges that begin to help us close to solving our questions.
Last Saturday, we met one of these persons, an excellent "bio-advisor" of an esteemed Italian company that deals with energy efficiency of buildings. He came to see us at home and we spent the afternoon in a beautiful and useful chat...
We must say to be found to attend a real lesson in green building! Our friend, starting by the various environmental issues related to global warming, passing to Italian and European legislation on the energy buildings certification and incentives for works on existing optimization of energy saving, arrived to explain the recent technology equipment as regarding the solar thermal and photovoltaics panels, in all types, as well as the possible insulation and geothermal energy techniques in buildings, showing numerous examples.
But the most interesting and astounding part arrived when we focused attention on consumption of this house. We considered our bills for gas and electricity to about one year of life (we could not make counts for a longer time because we live here since about one year and four months).

La prima sorpresa è arrivata sul consumo di energia elettrica. Al principio eravamo scettici sul fatto di avere abbastanza spazio per installare pannelli fotovoltaici sul tetto (di una casa a due piani divisa in quattro appartamenti, con un giardino stretto che la circonda). In realtà facendo dei calcoli, abbiamo avuto modo di vedere che in un anno abbiamo consumato poco più di 800 KW, il che significa che costruendo un impianto minimo, quindi di 1 MW, andremmo a produrre più energia del necessario, il che non è economicamente conveniente, considerando la spesa dell’impianto, gli eventuali incentivi statali e tutti i calcoli che derivano dall’attuale conto energia.
In ogni caso ci è stato detto che il nostro consumo è più basso rispetto alla media! Ci è stato chiesto che cosa facessimo per risparmiare tanto. La nostra risposta è stato uno scrollare di spalle, dal momento che ci sembra normale spegnere luci e stand by quando non servono, fare una sola lavatrice a pieno carico a settimana nelle ore serali, aver sostituito le vecchie lampadine con quelle a basso consumo, almeno dove accendiamo più spesso la luce. E considerare che la lavatrice che abbiamo è ancora di vecchia generazione e che io lavoro in casa al computer per almeno otto ore al giorno! Questo non fa altro che rassicurarci. Vorrà dire che in futuro non possiamo altro che migliorare!
The first surprise came on the consumption of electricity. In the beginning we were skeptical of the fact we have enough space to install photovoltaic panels on roof (a two-floors house divided into four apartments, with a garden close to the surrounds). Actually, doing the calculations, we saw that in a year, we consumed a little over 800 KW, which means that building a minimum plant of 1 MW, we would produce more energy of necessary, which is not economically viable, considering the cost of the plant, any incentives and all the calculations that result the current energy account.
In any case we were told that our consumption is lower than the average! We were asked what we do to save energy. Our response was a shake of shoulders, since it seems normal to us turning off lights and stand by when they don't serve, making one full load to week in the evenings for the washing machine, having replaced the old bulbs with low consumption ones at least where we light the lamp more often. And consider that washing machine we have belongs still from old generation and
I work at home computer for at least eight hours to day! This does nothing more than reassure. It will mean that in future we can only improve!

La nota dolente è invece stata il consumo del gas. Da una breve visita della casa, ci è stato fatto notare, come già avevamo immaginato, che ci sono enormi dispersioni di calore dalle finestre, dalle nicchie dei termosifoni, dalla porta d’ingresso. Questo tipo di analisi può essere anche fatto nel dettaglio con una fotocamera termica qualora fosse necessario provvedere alla certificazione energetica dell’edificio (cosa che in futuro saremo obbligati a fare). Quindi al momento la cosa essenziale per incidere sul consumo di gas per il riscaldamento è sicuramente provvedere alla sostituzione degli infissi. Sarebbe ottimale anche costruire intorno un “cappotto” termico esterno all’edificio, ma al momento è una soluzione costosa che andrebbe condivisa con gli altri inquilini dell’edificio, quindi fattibile solamente in vista di uguali vedute e un comune accordo.
The sore point is the consumption of gas. From a brief visit at home, it was pointed out, as we had imagined, that there are enormous dispersions of heat from the windows, the niches of heaters, the front door. This type of analysis can also be done in detail with a thermal camera if certification of energy is needed (which in the future we will be forced to do). So now the
essential thing to do for affecting the consumption of gas is to replace casements. It would also best to build around a external "coat" to heat the building, but at the moment is an expensive solution that should be shared with the other tenants of the building, then feasible only in the same point of views and a mutual agreement.

Per una buona parte del consumo di gas, però, incide il riscaldamento dell’acqua per usi sanitari. Abbiamo, quindi, stimato che in base al nostro specifico consumo è sufficiente l’installazione di un solo pannello solare termico da 2 mq per abbattere una buona parte della bolletta del gas. Si tratta di risparmiare circa 150 euro l’anno, cifra che in futuro non può che aumentare, poiché il costo del gas sarà sempre maggiore! In pratica, considerando il costo dell’impianto e gli incentivi statali, ammortizzeremmo la spesa in meno di dieci anni e cominceremmo a risparmiare da subito. La spesa, inoltre ci è sembrata piuttosto contenuta considerando la messa in opera, la procedura burocratica compresa e l’alta tecnologia dei pannelli previsti.
Abbiamo quindi fatto un sopralluogo all’esterno per valutare l’orientamento delle falde del tetto e il collegamento dei tubi con la caldaia esistente. Unica cosa ancora da valutare bene è il collocamento del boiler all’interno della casa, per il quale si dovrà realizzare eventualmente una struttura di sostegno per la mancanza di spazio a terra. Ci sarà anche la possibilità di valutare l’ampliamento dell’impianto con nuovi moduli per noi o per gli altri inquilini.
For a good part of gas consumption, however, the heating water for sanitary purposes affects. We therefore, estimated that, according to our specific consumption, simply installing a single solar panel of 2 square meters could break down a large part of gas bill. This is to save about 150 euros a year, a figure that in the future can only increase, because the cost of gas will increase! In practice, considering the cost of the plant and the incentives, the cost is amortized in less than ten years and we start saving immediately. The cost also seemed low including the implementation of bureaucratic procedure and high-tech panels set.
We then did a survey outside to value the orientation of the slopes of the roof and where the pipes will be connected with the existing boiler. Just a single thing remains to evaluate: it is the placement of boiler inside the house, for which we must possibly achieve a support structure for the lack of space on the ground. There will also be the opportunity to expand the plant with new modules for us or for the other tenants.

Tutto questo non ci spaventa affatto. Potremo finalmente sfruttare l’energia che il sole ogni giorno ci regala! Cosa desiderare di più? E soprattutto alla fine della bella chiacchierata ci siamo chiesti: che stiamo aspettando? Piccoli sacrifici che valgono per vivere subito meglio con meno preoccupazioni per il nostro futuro!
All this doesn't scare us at all. We can finally exploit the energy that the sun gives us every day!
